  • In this episode we explore another Final Fantasy Top 5 with a look at the dragoon class of the series. This is a great avenue to explore the recurring elements of the character in terms of narrative, design and function, and look at how they have quietly shaped key secondary aspects of story for decades.

Kain is my personal favorite, with Freya and Dion being tied for second.

Freya is definitely the most awesome Dragoon, she is my favourite! Yes, she's wonderfully competent, but her story is so sad. I hope that Sir Fratley eventually remembered her. Her music is lovely, too.

In terms of character development and design, Freya is definitely my favorite Dragoon. As far as sheer usefulness in battle goes though, I'm a big fan of Kain. I wasn't HUGELY crazy about my experience with FFIV (I played the 3D remake and found it to be slow, awkward, and aesthetically unpleasant), but Kain was a character I found to be extremely helpful in the late game. He was very powerful and saved my behind in battle quite a few times.

I'm really interested to see how they handle Cid in the remake. Will they give him even more references to the dragoon class? Maybe a proprer jump hability.

Hella nice picks but i gotta say. Not having Estinien on here is high key criminal

I picked Dragoon as main class for my FF XIV character. Dragoon is one of the coolest, yet somehow underrepresented character classes in Final Fantasy and Kain will forever be my personal favourite. In late game FFIV that thud of him swooping down and doing 9999 damage with his jump attack always felt so satisfying.

I personally never got acquainted with Kain or the Dragoon as a class until I played Dissidia, and then it finally clicked for me when I later played FFXV and I saw Aranaea. They’re such striking and interesting characters, and I love the ludicrousness of their Jump ability.
Although the Knight of the Fading Twilight from FFXVI gets bonus points from me with his insane Mirage Jump.

A very nice example of Dragoon is the FFXI class, well worth checking out on that games wiki if you are interested.

One of my favorites is the original from FFII, Ricard (think his name might've been different in another release). He always seemed so brave and willing to risk everything to help the party. Plus you need him and his drake to get through a tornado. Don't know if that's been topped in the series yet...

The fact that this video does not feature my boy Estinien, is a true travesty.
In short - Estinien Varlianeau, also known as Estinien Wyrmblood, was a member of the order of knights Dragoon - a Knight order in the city-state known as Holy See of Ishgard - the papal state, ruling over snow-clad region of Coerthas, forever clashed in the war against Dragon horde, sent by resentful dragon Nidhogg.
Estinien's debut happens during A Realm Reborn part of the story of Final Fantasy XIV as part of Dragoon storyline. During this time he weilds one of two eyes of Nidhogg, and Eyes in FFXIV are the source of Dragon's power.
During the end of Realm Reborn as Warrior of Light joins forces of Ishgard to defend the city from Dragon Horde, Estinien fights along with WoL for the first time. Next time we meet him in Heavensward storyline - Estinien joins Warrior of Light, Alphinaud and Lady Iceheart (woman, who has power to channel Primal Shiva into her own body and yet, unlike other Primals, is capable to fully control her) on the quest of reaching another Dragon of the First Brood - Hraesvelgr, who could, supposedly, stop the war between man and dragon, but chose to stay away from the war. After that plan doesn't work, Estinien joins Warrior of Light at an endeavor in which Cid supplies them with small form of Airship - the Mana Cutter - using which WoL and Estinien manage to get to Nidhogg's lair and kill the dragon, taking away its eye, which, turns out, in fact eye of the Hraesvelgr. Thing is that war between Ishgard and Dragons didn't start because of dragons. It started because people of Ishgard, in their thirst for power, killed Nidhogg's sister Ratatoskr (one of seven dragons of the First Brood - sister of Bahamut, Tiamat, Hraesvelgr, Nidhogg, Vrtra and Azdaja), and took her eyes to become more powerful. After which they took both of Nidhogg's eyes - one given to the Azure Dragoon and one was hidden. After events that happen during storyline, along with betrayal, one of most heartwrenching thing at that point, and following old pope Thordan the VIIth to the floating Continent of Azys Lla, Estinien helps Warrior of Light to reach Aetherochemical Research Facility where WoL faces against Ascian Lahabrea for... well, not really, but mostly last time. After WoL defeats Ascians and new Primal - King Thordan and his Knights Twelve in Singularity Reactor, Estinien takes both Eyes - one he had before and one he takes from Thordan's Sword - Ascalon and finally has a moment of respite. That's the exact moment when Nidhogg's rage, hidden in the eyes, takes over and he takes his control over Estinien.
With Estinien no longer at control over his own body, he is taken by Nidhogg and later attacks peaceful gathering between men of Ishgard and Dragons. Using Estinien's body, Nidhogg makes gives Warrior of Light last days until he launches attack against now republic Ishgard.
After Warrior of Light, Ser Aymeric and Alphinaud manage to get help from Hraesvelgr, Nidhogg fights against his brother. During battle at Final Steps of Faith, Warrior of Light and Alphinaud manage to subdue Estinien as he pleas for them to take his life. Instead both WoL and Alphinaud manage to take eyes away and throw them into abyss.
Estinien is saved and after recovery he leaves the knight order and becomes mercenary, leaving Ishgard and helping those who would need help...
Yet the story of Estinien is not over.
In Stormblood Estinien is absent for the majority of the expansion. Near the end of its storyline he infiltrates into the occupied territory of Ala Mhigo and manages to damage massive cannon at Castrum Abania, giving WoL and Ala Mhigan Resistance to make an attack against Castrum and move closer to Ala Mhigo. After WoL defeats Shinryu, Estinien manages to find Nidhogg's eyes, used by Ala Mhigans to summon that Dragon-like Primal and finally destroys them. Pre Shadowbringers Estinien saves Warrior of Light during battle at Ghymlit Dark, as at the crucial moment WoL is stricken by sudden event that already took souls of other Scions of the Seventh Dawn into the unknown. As WoL is saved but has to go to unknown, Estinien is contacted by Scions and contracted to perform reconiscance at the heart of Garlean Empire - at the capital. There he meets with man, known as Shadowhunter and both manage to unveil the fact that Zenos yae Galvus, who apparently committed suicide, is, in fact, alive and has killed emperor Varis zos Galvus. Both get into fight against Garlean weaponry, including uncanny Weapon prototype that uses human as its living CPU module (these Weapons are part of separate sub-story in Shadowbringers). After WoL returns from the First with new knowledge (or rather newly developed technique) how to save people from the Primals influence, and both WoL and Estinien save Tiamat from being enthralled by Elder Primal Bahamut (Trust me, it was SUPPOSED TO BE SHORT, I AM AVOIDING SO MANY DETAILS ON THE STORY NOW, PLEASE SEND HELP, THERE IS SO MUCH MORE!), Estinien and Tiamat join WoL against new threat - attack of the House Telophoroi and their uncanny Towers that enthrall everyone into following not a specific Primal, but the Empire...
After successful battle at Pagl'than, Estinien finally joins Scions of the Seventh Dawn formally as they travel to the Old Sharlayan to get more information about possible plans of the Empire and what they could do against it. He follows Warrior of Light, Thancred and Urianger to the city of Radz-at-Han, where they meet another First Brood Dragon Vrtra who is, de facto, Satrap of the Radz-at-Han and entire island of Thavnair. After the audience, one of the Towers - The Tower of Zot is activated, Estinien joins Scions at battle.
After successful destruction of the tower, Estinien joins Eorzean Alliance Garlemald Contingent as Alliance sends an army to the heart of the Empire. After successful operation there, as part of combined forces of Ishgardian, Bozjan and Dalmascan scouts, Estinien manages to join party at the assault at Tower of Babil.
After Warrior of Light has travelled to the Moon and defeated Zodiark, and Final Days befelled at the Source, Estinien along with Vrtra took to the skies and joined defence of Thavnair.
Finally Estinien joined Warrior of Light at their descent to the Aetherial Sea via Aitiascope and faced Hydaelyn - the Goddes, who created the world as we know it, and joined WoL's fight against her. After Hydaelyn has shown their destination to Ultima Thule, Estinien joined crew of Starship Ragnarok as it took to the skies to the Edge of the Universe.
In Ultima Thule Estinien has sacrificed himself and later was revived by Emet-Selch and Hythlodaeus as time to face Meteion and stop Final Days has come...
If you thought that was the end of Estinien's story, then you are wrong.
Basically, in patches 6.1-6.5 Estinien joined forces with WoL again, to help them and their new friend from World of Darkness, known as Zero to face against voidsent Golbez and his four elemental fiends - Scarmiglione, Barbariccia, Cagnazzo and Rubicante in order to save Azdaja from being overtaken by darkness.
Along with Vrtra, WoL and Y'shtola, Estinien went to the moon of 13th world and faced memoria of Golbez, along with fall of the kingdom of Baron. As Zero (who, people agree at, has probably real name like... Cecilia or something, because she drops Reaper job to become Paladin (and Reaper is XIV's version of XI's Dark Knight - DPS with Scythe, unlike XIV's own Dark Knight - Tank with Two-handed sword) due to abundance of light she gathers from the First (Please don't make me recite story of Shadowbringers, IT ALL MAKES PERFECT SENSE IN CONTEXT)...
And if you thought that this is where story ends - at death of Zeromus and all that... Nope. There is new adventure - to the place known as New World - also known as Tural! Well, for what IS going to happen to Estinien, WoL and Scions... That's what we are waiting for in Dawntrail. In summer of 2024. But trailer shows that he is probably joining some Mamool-Ja as independent Monster Hunter (?) Yeah, it's not easy.
THIS. WAS. EXTREMELY. SHORT. VERSION OF ESTINIEN'S STORY.
He is amazingly written multi-faceted character.
I mean, imagine if team that wrote XVI had time and resources to tell a story in span of about... ten years or so.

I think Estinien from FFXIV deserves a nod as well, well an MMO 14 has some of the best storytelling and characters the series has seen.

Dragoons are my favorite job, and Freya’s my favorite. They did her so dirty when the had to leave her quest line somewhat unfinished due to time constraints.
I can not wait to see her in modern graphics if that FF9 remake ever comes to fruition. Also hope her voice actor is Irish since I feel like her culture gives off Celtic vibes, and it would be yet another thing to add to her uniqueness lol
