The case for a Final Fantasy VIII Prequel (and why it won't happen)

  • In this episode we revisit earlier discussions on Final Fantasy prequel games and whether, for example, Square could viably entertain a Final Fantasy VIII-2 that focuses on Laguna Loire, Kiros and Ward; or a Final Fantasy X-0 that focuses on Jecht, Auron and Braska, rather than jumping forward to Final Fantasy sequels which, as Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth shows, can often be met with mixed receptions.
There are clear pros and cons between both prequel and sequel formats, with the former being freer to explore origin stories, existing characters, and arriving at a pre-defined end-point that jumps into a known narrative; while Sequel's allow us to see know protagonists and the next stage of their adventure, after the primary story has taken place. Here we'll break down the pro's and con's and consider which Final Fantasy games might warrant the prequel treatment.

I misread that title as VII and was like "but they already did that? Multiple times?"

I don't really think these games need prequels. You can just have sequels that feature flashback segments interspersed throughout the main story. The plots of the past stories relate to the main story.
Take FF8 for example. If the past story would be about Laguna and perhaps his relationship with Raine, you can tie that in with a current story about Squall and Rinoa. Maybe even have a scene with Laguna telling Squall about his mistakes and how it led to him not being there for his wife. Squall learns something and avoids making the same mistake.
Or with FFX, you could have a sequel where Tidus and and Yuna are parents and relate that to Jecht's story about wanting to return to his family. Tidus definitely has daddy issues and it could be an interesting way to explore that further by making him a father.
Gameplay wise, it might be a challenge to switch between the two segments. But I would just do what FF8 did and just have both characters have the same stats and equipment.

X and VIII could both handle prequels, but I worry about the execution. The sequels we've gotten so far show me it was much more about a strong vision supported by a strong execution, and you could have a good plot but bungle showing it in a meaningful manner.

I think a ff5 prequel about galuf and the wariors of dawn could be nice.

@azurekite6547 you've preempted an episode I've got queued 😂 I absolutely agree and think Galuf was a blueprint for these dense backstory/flashback heavy games.

Kitase and generally the devs hate the marathon of projects that those remakes require.

I agree that the series does have room for prequels, but I disagree with your 2 choices. The reason why is that each of those stories are resolved in the main game. Laguna and Jecht's trials are concluded by the heroes of the original game. Meaning, that like with the half-baked Crisis Core story Squenix would have to concoct some other narrative to resolve during the events. This will undoubtedly muddy the original narrative (see what they've been doing with FFVII). So, for me, I want prequels fairly removed from the main narrative so that there is more creative freedom to tell original stories, while still developing the world. To that end, I'd argue the games best suited for prequels would be III, VII (I know, but let me explain) and X.
III: Warriors of Darkness: In 3 we learn that there are 8 crystals, 4 each for light and dark. We also learn that the world of light is as destructive as darkness. Prior to the events, the heroes of darkness restored the encroachment of light, but seemingly something went wrong, which laid out the groundwork for the rise of the Cloud of Darkness. Maybe I missed something, but what actually went wrong? We would have the chance to explore that world (beyond the final dungeon) and learn about what brought about the original imbalance. Perhaps also learn more about Xande and Master Noah. I know it isn't nearly as rich of a game story, but it leaves room for a return to form for the franchise while allowing for the rich (for its time) world of 3 to be further developed.
VII: Jenova War: We learned during FFVII and Rebirth that when Jenova came to the planet it laid waste to the Ancients by posing as loved ones. This was further expanded upon by adding that regular humans were turned against the Ancients due to the affects of Jenova. Eventually heroes from the Cetra came and sealed Jenova away in the Northern Crater (and it is heavily speculated that said heroes eventually became the Knights of the Round). Why would this be a good idea for a prequel? We could learn more about how Jenova actually operates (since Jenova is seemingly a non-actor during the main game, per interviews with the creators) and see how the Ancients actually lived. Further, given the great gap in time, we could see a world that, perhaps, had yet to learn about (or even start utilizing) Materia in any sort of standardized way. Further, with the addition of the Gi Tribe and the Black Materia, we could perhaps unify all these new plot points. Perhaps we could also see what Red XIII's people were like in the past. I imagine a class-based game with the 13 heroic Cetra. Have the story conclude with Jenova's imprisonment and the heroes' deaths.
X: Yunalesca and Zaon: I understand the appeal in seeing Jecht and Auron's story, but we know what it was, we saw the major parts and, ultimately (outside of Auron's plan to turn Yuna and Tidus against Yevon) we know it ultimately didn't change too much of the world of Spira. Outside of the appeal of seeing these characters younger, there isn't really much room for a compelling plot. However, the first pilgrimage that started the cycle of death is far more interesting, in my opinion. We know Yunalesca sacrificed Zaon to seal Sin (who is controlled by her father YuYevon) and that she remained unsent to maintain this cycle. However, how did it come to that? What was the first pilgrimage like back when Zanarkand was being destroyed, etc.?? Given the major time gap it allows for a more unique story that helps to establish the world, rather than merely giving the players the ability to revisit it.

I'm A Huge Fan Of Ivalice, & The World Building Of Ivalice. There's So Much Potential For New Games, Sequels, & Of Course Prequels. Final Fantasy Tactics Could Have A Good Prequel With Balbanes & Orlandu During The Fifty Year War. Final Fantasy X & VIII Prequels Would Be Neat, But I Think A Tactics Prequel Would Be Better. That's My Bias Showing Through.

This is a little different but when it comes to talking about saving the world and sequelizing and having a natural conclusion, just look at the Dragon Ball Z sagas, I understand what you're saying and agree but at some point it just becomes reusing assets or IP for money or missed opportunities. Goku is to Vegeta/Frieza/Cell/etc. as Cloud is to Sephiroth. You're more talking about prequels, how they affect story and know what essentially happens, but I'm more referring to my first sentence about creating new obstacles or circumstances once they are once resolved. I think we're kind of saying the same things, I appreciate the content

Final fantasy X would benefit the most from a prequel, while I do love VIII I dont think there is so much lore behind Lagunas Story, because the conection between Laguna and FFVIII story is not that important.
On other hand FF X prequel has a lot of to do with Yuna,Tidus,Auron ,Kihmari ,Lulu and Wakka and even Rikku ,because of Yunas mother.
Spira as a world has a lot of lore behind it.

I don’t really think any of the other FF games will be revisited after 7 remake. 7 is the only game in the franchise big enough to justify a big project like this. That includes the rumored FF9 remake and FFX-3. I don’t think any of them are real.

They could do remakes on a smaller scale. FF7 Remake project was given so much budget as it’s the most requested. There were interviews on the producer Kitase about his thoughts on making an FF8 Remake. I think it’s not impossible. He has his ideas on how the junction system could be reworked. He also joked that he’s hiring the FF7R director for FF8 Remake after they finish the 3rd part of FF7R.

I agree about how sequels seem artificial in games like the FF games. I'd be 100% down for prequels to FF5, 8, and 10. ...as long as they're NOT done by CBU1, or at least not by the FF7R series team. I have not been a fan of the writing or acting in that game. Too campy. I'll take Team Asano or Yoshi-P for my desired prequels, please. Or throw money at Yoko Taro. Imagine him doing a FFX prequel and diving deep into Yu Yevon and Sin lore/themes.

There is only so much Final Fantasy one person could handle. I wouldn't want a FF8 prequel. I'd imagine we would play as kids fighting moogles with a stick in that case.

Except Final Fantasy is just a name. The franchise isn't really a true franchise, just an anthology of separate games with the same title. The only consistencies between games are...crystals and chocobos and summons' names? Moogles like you said. And all of those can be flexible in their inclusion. Each game has its own combat system, story, world, and characters. So I'm not sure how anyone could be burnt out on the series, besides just seeing "Final Fantasy" in the title.

She kind of just comes out of nowhere in FFVIII, mentions Time Kompression, merges with Squall's lion and then mumbles philosophical stuff as she explodes.
I'd love to hear more about the history of the Sorceress. How did this start? What happened to other Sorceresses? Why are they so feared? Have there been benevolent/worshiped Sorceresses?
