Firefight. Two ranks line VS Three ranks line. Empire: Total War.

- Basically, unit with lesser ranks is always superior in 1vs1 firefight.
Unit delivers fire volume faster. Own casualties from musket or artillery fire are less due to formation's density. Soldiers standing in two-ranks line do not regroup (it is shown in the video). They do not waste time for this and fire where they stand till the end of the fight.
However, it takes longer to maneuver and to form square. Also, frontline is longer and the enemy can concentrate more units against one thin line.
Here, Russian infantry formed in two ranks faces three-ranks British line. Stats are vanilla.
I didn't expect anything else, I always stretch my lines for maximum firepower
Idk if it’s the case for line infantry, but sometimes, light infantry in skirmish doesn’t have all soldiers shooting the target (especially when it’s on the far left or right of the range). I only use 1 line when my units have few men
Very susceptible to a cavalry charge though
Yeah I do that before I have the fire by rank tech
Only for 1v1's. If you have a large block of multiple units, you will find that you can have more men firing in a smaller space.
all it'd take is one brave charge and you're a dead man
personally i proffer 3 lines because it feels like it preforms better against charges then a 2 line unit
Inefficient
3 lines are maximum that can fire by rank, And I can agree with you. But the efficiency depends on playstyle. I do like cavalry, so I tend to use it instead for charging and countercharging, while infantry gives them support from distance. Two lines perform much better in that case.
@@matthaeusdecuiavia8637 i understand that and do use more cavalry in empire now, but I usually play as Britain and utilise the strong charge of basic infantry and the exceptionally good charge of the grenadiers while they are supported by other infantry and artillery (order mixture from Napoleon) who focus on specific units to break a line. Pair this with cavalry guarding the wings but not engaging the line or the flanks, unless a unit is routing or exposed (Britain has worse specific cavalry units, e.g no lances and basic heavy and light cav, and are more a jack of all trades faction for cavalry)
Finally, some Good quality content
The military techs such as fire by rank are one of the thing I miss of empire, watch your soldiers firing in organized lines is pretty awesome and I missed that in TW Napoleon
you can get fire by rank with darthmod for ntw
This is the reason why I have won every battle in this game. Those regiments of line infantry that turn out to be "superfluous" due to the length of the ranks - can be placed "at an angle" - first inward in order to catch enemy cavalry units - and then outward - thus enclosing the enemy regiments in a semicircle.
I kinda miss my lines firing like this because I modded my lines to have the "can skirmish" so that they will all fire, not quite a mass volley but it's close there
Because the rows are not as stretched out, does that affect performance somewhat, does it give the more stretched row the advantage, or is there no difference?
The more stretch out it is, the more soldiers in the front and since only troops in the front can shoot, more troop in the front = more shooting
Also less chance of a bullet hiting someone if the shot go past the first row
@@Daniel-dk9zu No, Lines in E:TW will emplyo fire by rank till the 3rd rank, so all ranks fire (so all 120 men are firing in both formations)
This is simply a matter of Stray bullets hitting people in the 3rd row, which isn't possible in the one with 2 ranks
@@khaak2390 Wider formations are also just simpler to focus fire
what difficulty are you playing? sadly difficulty affect unit morale & accuracy
This one is on medium difficulty i guess. In campaign, on expert, some of the AI buffs you can compensate with better generals, army composition, proper techs researched earlier, etc, you know. But still two rank will be more effective than three.
@@marlborotheman1222 i did a lot of tactics testing back in the days and realized that in hardmode, your gyards will lose against militia in a 1v1 shootout
I guess medium is without any modifiers
@@AttiliusRex what really that can't be right
Streltzy still beat AI in Hardmode no one can stop cheap unit spam and reinforment waves of a few thousands a turn for the same amount in ducats
@@AttiliusRex I'm currently playing in VH/VH with Germany and during an Austrian rebellion, (it was some hours ago at the moment I'm writing this message) there was a militia against my infantry line.
The infantry line crushed them. Militia lose 40 soldiers and they are out lol.
can we check this with fire by rank on? Presumably 3 lines on FBR would be better than 2 due to a narrower front presenting a smaller target...
The nartower target shouldnt matter that much, however 3 ranks has 50% more local firepower and allows more of your soldiers to fire at the same unit
fire by rank was on in this video or did you not watch it?
I mostly use 3 lines because then i can fit more men next to the enemy so instead of 160 fiering i get 320
👏🙂
Wish this game worked on my computer, the damned thing crashes every half hour or so.
like how it crashes? stuck on ottoman turn or?
Bro I was playing this on my backup pc with core 2 duo and gt 730 with 2gb of ddr2 ram when my gaming pc broke down and it was surprisingly running quite well on everything low but ultra textures since it just utilizes the vram and doesn't impact the performance that much
My own computer doesn't even want to download it -_-
What mod is it? Where can I get it?
I say, Not very sporting of you, old chap.
It worked did it 👍 @Marlboro Theman
It will work until you met another player who will place two ranks as well;)
@@marlborotheman1222 in that case you gotta add more tricks such as yours, and then hope they overlook it by making distraction in another area or something
The russian line infantry has a lower accuracy though
Just underlines the point even more
@@rasmuslundsnnichsen4984 Would prove the tactic more effective if the equal units were presented
@@samthecrazywowgamer9558 not really - if you have a unit that has worse stats in the focus area of this test, and it still performs better than the other, that is as good a proof that the method used by the bad unit is better, as any other you can find
Ehh played darthmod it doesn't matter how stretched your line is or isn't. It's all about your army comp and tactics
I play darthmod and a stretched out line still outperforms a tradition one, because they still attack you in compact formations, so you can always wrap your flanks around the center and kill zone them
