@Electro_blob Monarchy has proven throughout 19th and 20th centuries that it will always yield to the oligarchs and liberals when their private interests are threatened. Even worse: it will stay in place as a stooge, giving the populace a false sense that they still live in a traditional country.

The reasons spain went to war have been WAY too oversimplified. You massively oversimplified the 1934 revolts and skipped the series of assasinations that lead to the begining of the Civil War. Not only that, but Franco didn't lead the coupé de tat, he was one of the several leaders that organized themselves across the territory and only ever became the leader because the two guys that actually lead the nationalists died in airplane crashes (most likely organized by Franco himself) Good video overall, but details are important when looking at History
Unsurprising. From everything I’ve seen this channel, though it may truly try to be objective, leans left/center-left in its interpretation of history. Franco is only seen in a positive light by monarchists or people on the political right or traditional side of the divide. So those who don’t fit that description won’t go out of their way to learn or share or even necessarily be able to consider some of the incredible feats they did.
@@ReformedSooner24 unifying far right factions to join the common cause in the war doesn’t seem like a positive thing to me. Deserves to be mentioned though.

It cannot be forgotten that the Catholic Church was severely attacked. Temples were destroyed, priests, bishops and seminarians were assassinated. The nuns were raped and killed. With that, the Spanish people looked the other way when the reprisals came.
And children of Republic towns were allowed to be raped to death by enemies of the Church. It was elected by the people that there would be a separation of Church and state but the Catholic church wanted to rule Spain like it was the dark ages.

1) The lack of any real centralized leadership. Either in the army or in the government. 2) The decision at the start of the conflict to hand over the country's gold reserves to the Soviet Union. 3) The unwillingness of many in the republican controlled areas to join the army and fight. 4) The refusal of army units to obey orders. In particular orders that would lead to losses. 5) A terrible ally (the Soviet Union) with an inconsistent policy toward Spain. 6) A lack of ruthlessness on the part of the Spanish communists. 7) The tendency of everyone in the government to be positioning themselves to take power after a victory rather than fighting for a victory. 8) The weakness of the republic in the countryside and the republic's eventual inability to feed its own population. 9) A total lack of any type of military strategy. A total focus on defensive warfare. 10) The decision in 1939 to unconditionally surrender still holding a quarter of the country with a large army in the field rather than fight to the end. The general cowardliness of the republican elite who fled to save their own lives and didn't care one bit about any of their followers.

Interesting fact... George Orwell. The author of the books 1984 and Animal Farm, left England to join the International Brigade and fought in the Spanish Civil War. One of his other books A Homage to Catalonia is an autobiography of his experiences. He talks how the Republicans and Nationalists were camped on opposing hill tops and neither could shoot each other. And he also talks about the Republicans fighting each other in Barcelona.

When Nazi Germany sends Franco guns, planes and food and the isolationist United States refuses to send aid a democratically elected government in Europe.
Can you make a video about the Central American Crisis when major civil wars and communist revolutions erupted in various countries in Central America in the midst of the Cold War?
You got some things wrong in the civil war. Franco wasn't always the leader of the uprising, Sanjurjo was in the beggining, in fact, Franco thought about uncovering their plans, but finally refused. Both Mola and Sanjurjo died in convenient plane crashes, leaving a clear path for Franco to take over. Also, the coup d'etat started when a head of a right-wing political party was murdered by leftist militias in response of an execution of a leftist police officer by far right militias. Another point you missed then is that communists and anarchists were already arming people for a revolution, so it wasn't due to political discontent, but to extremely intense social fight, what ultimately led to a coup d'etat in 1939

@@silveriorebelo8045 Veterans of the civil war are very respected in México, and it was also the only nation to oficially give foreign aid and support to republican Spain. We consider them freedom fighters because they fought to keep Spain free of a tyrannical government, regardless of borders or nationality.
I think what is important to note is that in the previous election CEDA was the largest party but the president refused to allow them to form a government with them as the head , and when the Radical party prime minister was forced to resign, instead of President Zamora allowing CEDA to continue their term, new elections were called. This period itself is one of the most complex I have ever researched and in general it was a period where both sides and genuine fear of the other and have cause to fear the other.
The largest party might not be bigger than the biggest coalition. Australia's recent election is a testament to that. The Labor party was the largest but the Liberal party was the leader of the largest coalition and won as a result.
Mr. Goldfish While that is true, it does not work for CEDA. It was a coalition of the right wing groups of Spain with Robles’s Accion Popular being the largest party within it. CEDA is similar to the popular front amongst Spanish and French leftists. Historian Stanley Payne accuses the republicans of running a selective democracy where they believed only those of their views could rule after the denial of CEDA’s right to form a government. At the same time, CEDA did not help its case as it authoritarian tendencies remained apparent, Robles never dissuaded fears of authoritarianism, and while most of the party were content with working within the system to enact change, the inclusion of falangists, monarchists, and carlists only made the left fear CEDA.
Mr. Goldfish Also in fairness, if I recall correctly l, Robles was fine with the decision, as I believe he wished not to stir up too much controversy and later on the government had to include CEDA in the cabinet with members controlling the key positions of defense, labor, and agriculture(if I remember correctly) which were all areas of reforms the Republicans wanted control of.
Well it is fairly easy to win a war when the other side: - Does not formaly mobilize from the start. - Does not have a centralized chain of command. - Does not have a single ideology.
Lmaooo my Spain went communist once and formed a coalition with communist France and ended up 'winning' not really but kinda.
The civil war was a major disaster for the country and unless Germany, we are not really known for learning from our mistakes, so the war is a taboo today. There's also a problem and is that there are still millions of people in Spain that consider totally legitimate to kill others for political differences and that defend a war that destroyed the country. Also there is a total lack of political literacy in the right wing and most right wingers think that being a democrat is being a communist
Kind of cut out the parts of the miner strike being ordered to be put down by the republican government and the moves taken against the church and conservative peoples of Spain which helped push much of the military towards the coup.
Also, he did not mention that the assassination of the leader of government oppositon by the leftist popular front was what triggered the civil war. Or that the socialist leader Indalecio Prieto brought a gun to the parliament and aimed with it to the right-wing representatives.
The republican government at that time was a coalition between the CEDA and a republican centre right party which could do little to stop the CEDA's demands.
Republican govt made no attempt to stop leftist violence. Also, people feared a Red Terror and what they knew had occurred in Russia after the Reds took power.
@13:00 USSR: “communism is about brotherhood, sharing, putting people above the alter of profit!” Spanish Republicans: “so you will help us?” USSR: “yeah, but you will have to pay”
For a different look at the war, try The Passionate War. It's told largely as a collected narrative of the many strange, brutal, and sometimes darkly humorous events in Spain. Many foreign powers operated in Spain before and during the war. While it is sometimes seen as a training ground for the world war to follow. It also offered textbook examples of how not to fight a modern war.
One thing to remember was the anti-religious nature of the republican forces. It is one thing to target someone who is rich and owns land, but no religion is going to survive without people who aren't rich and land owning. If one side is going to have you executed just for praying then you're going to side with those who won't.
I'm not at all excusing the actions of the Republicans, but the "godlessness" of the forces was in reaction to the brutal treatment of the Catholic Church against workers fighting for the fruits to their own labor. Again, nuns and priests alike and the innocents caught between crossfire didn't deserve what happened to them, but don't overlook what the church did just like you wouldn't overlook what the Republicans did. Keep that same energy.

no, the republicans had way better means and support by the soviet union, They even had about half of the spanish regular army and about 3/4 of the navy when the war started. But the republicans were such a mess that they could not held their ground. The nationalist, a spectrum which included right wing republicans to fascist, monarchist, old regime monarchist and traditional catholics decided no name Franco as their sole military leader and dictator in october 1st of 1936. Many times the nationalist only had to push the republicans, then sit and wait for the internal skirmish.

No it isn't. Somebody probably told it already but for more informations about May Days, inner working of Republicans and volunteers and war as a whole, read the book Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell. It's notable that other famous British writer, J. R. R. Tolkien was outspoken supporter of Nationalist because of his Catholic faith and Republican murders of Catholic clergy.
Because Franco united anti-republicans, on the other hand anarchists and trotskyist in the late years of war were supressed by stalinists. So there was a lot of infighting on the republican side.
I keep hearing this "the nationalists were the wealthy, the republicans were the poor" shtick which is simply not true. While the nationalists were supported by a large portion of the landed nobility and bourgeoisie, the bulk of the nationalists were Catholic peasants, workers and soldiers from all over the country. Half the country supported the nationalists, and I can tell you, half the country wasn't rich. They were simply poor, religious folk who were tired of seeing radical communists and anarchists burn their churches, rape nuns and slaughter people for the sake of being Catholic, with total impunity and indifference from the republican government.
LOL. Not really. Although, yes most of the National side were poor Catholics. They were in a sense, just like modern poor republicans; useful idiots brainwashed into fighting against their own interests by an elite that didn’t give two shits about them.

While it is easy to talk about the mass bombing of civilians becoming a more common /well known German tactic , it seems very misleading. Every major power in WWII did that. The Allies, were if anything, far better at it, with much more in the way of air power to put towards it, and causing equal if not greater destruction.

Great video, pretty accurate I must say. How Spain ended up in a civil war is a much more extense subject, but all in all, this video relates what happened in my country with objectivity during that tough times. Greetings from Spain.
I like the video overall, but it feels a bit bias. It glosses over Republican atrocities(looting of churches and mansions, brutal executions of the clergy and wealthy, rape of conservative women including nuns, etcetera) during the war, and doesn't mention the growing political violence prior to the 1936 coup which included the execution of Calvo Sotelo who was the leader of the monarchist faction. Saying the uprising occurred solely because the right wasn't happy with the election results is factually wrong. I understand this is meant to be a short video, but you could've and should've provided a fuller picture.
Indeed, the uprising was not just because the right wasn’t happy with the election results but also because they hadn’t gotten over the deposing of the right wing dictatorship that preceded the republic.
I'm actually very interested to see how this occurred. This is something little talked about leading up to WWII, but was arguably very informative for the Soviets and 3rd Reich military wise.
Its interesting to make a comparison between Franco and the Tsar/Whites different attitudes to defeat Marxists revolutionaries: the Whites and the tsar didn't care about the well being of the citizens thus they gradually lost all support. Interesting also reading Kropotkin "conquest of bread" and how he, in the late XIX century already knew the importance of keeping people fed to ensure the success of a revolution. Which was a huge factor even in the 1789, 1830, 1848 and 1871 French revolutions.
Germany had a big role no only in military assitance (the most important aerian unit where the condor brigades) and diplomaticly, making possible the non-intervention agreement she then pocceded to ignore. The reasons spain went to war have been WAY too oversimplified. You massively oversimplified the 1934 revolts and skipped the series of assasinations that lead to the begining of the Civil War. Not only that, but Franco didn't lead the coupé de tat, he was one of the several leaders that organized themselves across the territory and only ever became the leader because the two guys that actually lead the nationalists died in airplane crashes (most likely organized by Franco himself)
Good video overall, but details are important when looking at History

Unsurprising. From everything I’ve seen this channel, though it may truly try to be objective, leans left/center-left in its interpretation of history. Franco is only seen in a positive light by monarchists or people on the political right or traditional side of the divide. So those who don’t fit that description won’t go out of their way to learn or share or even necessarily be able to consider some of the incredible feats they did.

When your name is Francisco Franco and France still doesn’t like you: : (
Franco-Franco relations were quite poor
I think what is important to note is that in the previous election CEDA was the largest party but the president refused to allow them to form a government with them as the head , and when the Radical party prime minister was forced to resign, instead of President Zamora allowing CEDA to continue their term, new elections were called. This period itself is one of the most complex I have ever researched and in general it was a period where both sides and genuine fear of the other and have cause to fear the other.
True, but if some youtube historian says it in his/her videos they would be immediately labeled as nazi, it doesn't fit the narrative.
The largest party might not be bigger than the biggest coalition. Australia's recent election is a testament to that. The Labor party was the largest but the Liberal party was the leader of the largest coalition and won as a result.
Mr. Goldfish
While that is true, it does not work for CEDA.
Mr. Goldfish
Also in fairness, if I recall correctly l, Robles was fine with the decision, as I believe he wished not to stir up too much controversy and later on the government had to include CEDA in the cabinet with members controlling the key positions of defense, labor, and agriculture(if I remember correctly) which were all areas of reforms the Republicans wanted control of.

Don't worry, I've heard they're working on another one.

It's absolutely no surprise, but often the godlessness of the republican forces is "overlooked" by modern narratives
If remember correctly most communists are very anti religious

Ethan Fallert prolly not, current and controversial

Thank you 4 outlining the fact that fascism and communism were THE 2 competing political philosophies at the time. If you are in college now they conveniently gloss over this and claim fascism was the old order and communism was the new. Insane.
It’s even funnier when you consider fascism is newer than communism by more than a half century.
Ikr. My highschool teacher said that they're basically the same because they were both "authoritarian".
@Salterino Kripperino No need, I already am :)
@@Daniel-pg9qh Be proud of it.
@@Daniel-pg9qh And he is right, many here apparently don't know fascism means national-SOCIALISM. Fascism, socialism and communism are basically the same idea, the difference between them is that fascism didn't want to destroy the fabrics of society to build the utopias they promised. The opposite to fascism and communism is democracy.
Well, two things:
1- I really liked how the video is and how it's presented(so I used it as a base for my civil war project in history class)
2-My father is from Guernica so, I've been there a lot of times and have visited the tree that survived the bombing and also if you go to Omago (a bakery there which in my opinion is the best one) you can see that the glass on the roof depicts the bombing

In fact, we supported the nationalists.
The CNT part of spain in Catalonia was the best faction, to hell with the soviet puppets

@@MarioGomez-kj5bc left unity is a funny notion honestly, there isn't a chance of it happening any time soon I'm afraid
@@MarioGomez-kj5bc Unity with stalinists is impossible. That said, the CNT is probably the worst example of historical anarchism, their leaders were basically Lenin-lite.
0:05 - After watching the whole video, I have one question. Where is the unlikelihood of nationalist victory? In fact, the video clearly shows how certain was the nationalist victory
I love this channel's art style
I like that the class characters are represented by the Victoria II classes
You forgot when the popular front killed the leader of the opossition and the political violence got to the streets
YES...
While it is easy to talk about the mass bombing of civilians becoming a more common /well known German tactic , it seems very misleading. Every major power in WWII did that. The Allies, were if anything, far better at it, with much more in the way of air power to put towards it, and causing equal if not greater destruction.
This channel is insanely bias towards the allies in ww2, but in particular the soviets, he NEVER mentions the evil crap they did, he even blamed Finland for being invaded by the commies, because they were apparently “anti communist” like gee I wonder why
History according to Reddit. lol
Great video, pretty accurate I must say. How Spain ended up in a civil war is a much more extense subject, but all in all, this video relates what happened in my country with objectivity during that tough times. Greetings from Spain.
He was authoritarian by definition, not totalitarian
I like the video overall, but it feels a bit bias. It glosses over Republican atrocities(looting of churches and mansions, brutal executions of the clergy and wealthy, rape of conservative women including nuns, etcetera) during the war, and doesn't mention the growing political violence prior to the 1936 coup which included the execution of Calvo Sotelo who was the leader of the monarchist faction. Saying the uprising occurred solely because the right wasn't happy with the election results is factually wrong. I understand this is meant to be a short video, but you could've and should've provided a fuller picture.
I agree, not to say that one side is better than the other, but i see what you are saying
Indeed, the uprising was not just because the right wasn’t happy with the election results but also because they hadn’t gotten over the deposing of the right wing dictatorship that preceded the republic.
The election was rigged anyways. That was the whole reason for the coup.

Totally agree
I don't think they actually cared for love... but more for efficiency.
Give people food and entertainment, and you can do whatever you please
Portugal: *sips port wine*
It wasn't between germany and the soviets, it was between italy and the soviets. Germany did't play as large of a role as either.
Germany had a big role no only in military assitance (the most important aerian unit where the condor brigades) and diplomaticly, making possible the non-intervention agreement she then pocceded to ignore. But i agree Italy had a lager role. There whas also portugal and minor helps from Britain and Portugal.
