- Medieval 2 Total War is known as being the game with the most diverse, unique & complete mods in the franchise. From Tsardoms to Third Age to Stainless Steel every mod I’ve played on the game has been more stable, has had more content and has generally felt more like a brand new Total War than most other mods I’ve played on most other Total War games.
Today, I’d like to spotlight a mod on Medieval 2 that may be one of the most impressive I’ve played in scale & in player immersion. Lucium Total War has 2 campaigns, a 1700s Europe & 1800s South America, with dozens of playable factions, hundreds of new brilliant units and fantastic unique historical events and campaign mechanics that make you really feel like this is a Pike and Shot Total War that we need. By the end of this video I guarantee you’ll have no choice but to get on the game and try it out for yourself!

The painting you see on the loading screen for the South America mode shows the surrender of the British force under the command of general John Whitelocke to Santiago de Liniers in Buenos Aires during the British invasions of the River Plate in 1806, (There was another in 1807) these two failed invasions would spark the flames of independence for what would be later be known as Argentina, infact many persons who later became national heroes took part in the defense of the city (i.e Manuel Belgrano, Martin Miguel de Güemes, etc) .
I like the idea, but I would rather see this Era in in empire's game engine. Ship battles and bayonette charges are essential for me 👍

Really cool to see someone thinking about South America. I was recently reading a book about Simon Bolivar, and was thinking Venezuela, Columbia, Ecuador, and Peru would make a great Saga game (if they must insist on continuing to make these), or all of South America for a full game. They'd really have to get it right though, otherwise I don't think as many people would buy the game based on the time period. It would have to rely more on being quality in order to sell.
its napoleonic warfare combined with nation building, instead of the clashing of already made european powers, fresh nations with a lot of cahracter to mold into your new world empire, no fucking idea why it's not more popular , at all, other than people not knwoing the place.
They should make a game about colonization and independence wars

No doubt that a crusades Saga would fit better and will be most welcomed if not made fantasy!

Played as the Mapuche in the South America campaign, got invaded by Spain * Chile and lost some land. Spain wanted a peace treaty so I took the opportunity to make an ally out of them, Chile made me a vassal to them, 1 turn later they declare war on Spain which I used to break the alliance with Chile and becoming free once again, went to war with Chile and and retook my land including my capital.
This mod is really fun.
For European campaign Morocco is really fun. Small minor, so there is challenge at start, some cool units and great music.
For South American campaign Mapuche is pretty unique. Cool units.
I like Spanish Empire too since you will struggle a lot like WRE in Atilla, but it's satysfying to finally defeat all rebels.
Why we need medieval 2 remastered ASAP :)

The main issue for me with Empire is that the AI is just so bad. It loads and works fine - and some of the mods are pretty cool. But unless you are really into role playing all the battles are just too easy.
That is so cool! Imagine if they made multiple campaigns on North America, Africa, East Asia, and Southeast Asia. This mod is what Empire Total War should've been!

I love Lucium, but "King of Austria" title is really immersion breaking as a Habsburg fanatic it especially pains me

As a fellow Habsburg fanatic on the development team for this mod allow me to explain this decision. The main reason behind it was that Holy Roman Emperor didn't apply specifically to Austria since it referred to the whole apparatus. Technically the Austrian leaders were Archduke's of Austria but King's of Bohemia, King of Hungary, etc. We decided to make the title king to since it represented the other crown titles held, while also showing in gameplay that Austria was not just the HRE.
@@mithyc4123 Ye I know I asked about it under one of your (Lucium Total War channel) videos, but I still think you could just make the title "Archduchy of Austria" instead. They were indeed Kings of Hungary, Bohemia and Croatia, but they prioritized Austria over them

Not being able to play the Dutch Republic in a 1700's setting is just criminal. Especially considering they were the biggest contributors of the wars against Louis the XIV'th.
If only CA hadn't hard coded the campaign map of Empire into it. I can only imagine total conversion mods coming out of that game now if they hadn't.

This looks like a great mod, will probably check it out. But if you want a mod that makes medieval 2 feel like a brand new game 100% recommend Divide and Conquer, a mod that started out as a Third Age submod and is now a far superior stand alone

Heard about this mod. Good things
I feel that this mod has a lot of great ideas going for it, but it is hindered slightly by the team trying to revamp every aspect of the game with additional complication. Sometimes great, sometimes unnecessary.

ever play mount and blade? there is an early beta for a medieval 2 mount and blade mod called Calradia Total War, pretty barebones at the moment but very good fun for a warband fan like myself (:
Man, your spanish was just perfect when you talked about the South America factions.
Actually the name was "República del Río de la Plata" (because they find quite the lot of silver there) and was one of the great powers in south america in the past. They even did an alliance with the Brazil Empire and Uruguay against Republic of Paraguay (back in school they told me that this was because Paraguay was way more advanced then and they didn't like that, no idea if it actually was like that i should read about it)
And also, years later, they launched the campaign known as "La Conquista del Desierto" (The Conquest of the Desert) when they killed and removed the native population and took their lands.
Our history is quite bloody.

As a brazilian TW player I think the developers did an amazing and accurate work telling the Dutch and French invasions in Brazil. This is better than any class in school.
I'm curious as to why they used Medieval II instead of Empire. Empire is already set in the 18th century, wouldn't it have been easier for the units?
Disclaimer: I have no idea how to mod, so I don't know the ins and outs of making such thing or how it's even done, I'm just curious lol
empire is very unintuitive, you cant mod maps or new mechanics. And empire itself is really really badly designed one of CA's worst titles. People resort to mod either napoleon TTW or entirely other titles.
Every Total War game since Empire (2009) is a lot harder to mod. Also CA never released proper mod tools.
That's why there is so many Medieval 2 and Rome 1 mods since these games are powered by old, but mod friendly game engine.
All games since Empire are using the same engine.
Modders are very ambitious though, and some somehow managed to add new regions to the Shogun 2 recently. Total FOTS mod for Shogun 2 looks very promising and I recommend to check it out if you like early Victorian era.
Have a you heard about the a studio called taleworlds?
They did mountain and blade warband and bannorlord.
Point is they love their fans so theirs games a mod friendly.
CA used to be like that. Long ago when they cared about their fans.

I'd rather play Rome 1 and medieval 2 and all the mods associated with it then anything else.
Good memories and you can fine tune it even if your not a pro modder..
@@alanmike6883 This comment resonates with me so much. In the current gaming era most indie games are trying to make their games 100% modable to give their players the information and the help they need for their game to be the best that it can be.
CA cant afford this they do not trust their brand or the games they make. They became a cheap imitation what they were all thoose years ago. A good developer is not scared of mods... A bad one is terified of them since it puts on full display how shit the base game is.

It looks great but just once I would love for one mod starting in 1700 to acknowledge Scotland and England were separate nations in 1700 so I can play scottish empire easily in one of these mods.
About that. If you start as scotland you get -1000000000000000000 gold per turn lol

The idea is rly cool and overall it seems solid. But coming from playing mainly DAC lately i am spoiled with good high quality models and unit cards. I know it rly servers no purpose for the game itself but the fact that unitcards are looking the way they do in this game just isa big no no for me :/ will keep my eye on the mod though

the old total wars have pretty small maps and pretty small maximal sices when they tried the first multi continent map some regions had to be HUGE so if you have a small number of maximal regions its not easy to have a "world map"

its a really cool mod and i can appreciate the work that went into it but it just isnt for me. I love Empire and this mod just doesnt play as good, at least on the battlefield. The gunpowder units are kinda janky and dont work as good. For example, you can fire over walls and obstacles... I like how the settlements/city building works in this game but the combat is a huge turn off when compared to Empire TW mods

I like everything in this video except the title... this mod is promising but Empire with mods still offers things M2TW will never have; Naval battles, square formation.. and better graphics, unit cards etc. M2TW has family trees, scripts are cool with the events but the battles are subpar in my opinion. All about taste I guess. Cheers
Medieval 2 has inferior battle engine, barely playable siege battles and no naval battles at all. I play Total War games mainly for the battles so I would still choose modded Empire, Napoleon or FotS over Lucium, but if someone prefer campaign gameplay then this mod is a good alternative.

@@immasword Medieval 2 sieges are horrible, I always autoresolve them or send less units so the enemy sally out next turn. Pathfinding especially on walls is so bad that units often get stuck and cannot move and then you have to wait until all enemy units are dead because they have infinite morale. It is so boring.
Attila and ToB have best sieges but even Shogun 2 and Rome 2 have better sieges than Medieval 2.
@@LordAntharg nope almost never had pathfinding problems modded or no, and and units only have infinite moral in the town center witch makes sense as in a siege when they have been pushed back to the last line of defense they would logically have nowhere to run to, i had plenty of great last stand moments in defensive seiges and surounding defenders on all sides is incredibly rewarding that way. The cities and castles also look great and have way more variety than most total war games especially empire and shogun's samey forts. and thats without bring up multiplayer honestly in multiplayer med 2 sieges are some of the most fun you can have in total war
Couldnt agree more. Nostalgia blinds these people. Everytime I try to go back to Med 2 I realize how trash it is compared to modern titles. Like you said the battles are in modern standards unplayable. No range overlays, horrible pathfinding in cities. Just cant do it and I was in love with the game as much as anyone back in the day.
@@sleepysteve111 idk i bought medieval 2 a few weeks ago in a Total War franchise sale, i think its pretty good. there is a nostalgia for people that talk about the game sure but just cuz the game is old i dont think the game is bad. i was able to play Med 2 fine for my first time and Rome 2 felt so sloppy battle wise, someone described it best as "blob on blob battles" didnt feel that way in Med 2

Sure there is some cool things in this mod and some are better than empire but battles aren't that great IMO medieval just struggles with gunpowder and with no america and India map what's even the point? Still a really well done mod so I don't want to make it sounds too negative
