Hi Taria Yes the grey / black markers do help to bring out the contrast. I just watched Ian Fenley’s suggestion and bought me-self a set from Cass Art down the road and they work wonders. 😊 Thanks a lot
omgg, thank you for the solution! in a previous video from u i was commenting about how my sketches look like just a splash of coloured water, now i know why :DDDD ur the best thank uuu
I was literally JUST getting down on myself for feeling like I didn’t have enough contrast and just “coloring in” my sketch. I actually thought of those exact words last weekend when I was doing a really colorful sketch and despite its color I just thought it looked flat. I would love for you to go even deeper on these pens and see you use them and talk through when you choose which one.
Thank you for sharing this, I certainly struggle with getting my darks dark enough. While it's wet it looks great, but then once it's dried back the contrast is weakened. This looks like a great way of bringing the contrast back 😊
Yes that’s a good point - watercolour dries lighter generally. They are definitely nice and easy to use to get some controlled contrast for sure…and you can layer them up too 😊
Thank you, Taria! As a newbie I’m wondering how to know where to use the warm shades of gray vs. where to use the cool shades? I look forward to your videos every Sunday. Again, thanks!
Hi Jill - great question!! I tend to think about what colour I’m using the grey shade over… if it’s a warm yellow, orange or red I’ll use warm greys and if it’s over colder greens, blues etc I’ll use cold greys… hope that helps? Thanks so much for watching!!
Oh gosh! I literally just attended Ian’s demo class yesterday and after he showed how he used multiple cold/warm grey pens to add contrast. I started swatching my Faber Pitt brushes to see if I could use them. And here I am watching this video! You read my mind!! 😘
Oh yes, I too bought this set couple years ago and wasn’t really using it until a few months ago I started with watercolor. So when I searched for something to add smaller shades I tried them and use it as my cheat code since then :)
Hi, Taria ! I have been using the FC Pitt Artist Pens since this summer on you recommandation from a previous video. I love them and I must say they have taken my house portraits to the next level. Thanks ! Looking forward to more tips and recommandations ! Have a lovely week.
I love this! I just bought the soft brush nib set because the set you have was out of stock. I hope I like them and I'm able to create these kind of shadows and depth. I also really enjoy your sketching process and am trying to get loser with my sketches and not get so caught up in realism (which I can't say I really succeed at anyway! Haha). I like the purposeful whimsy of loose sketches versus the feeling.... "Hmmm this looks off and like a mistake"
WOW Taria! That turned out super-gorgeous! I’m still nowhere near able to sketch the way you do but, with the help of your course, I am getting there. It was brilliant to watch how the addition of the Pitt Artist Pens to create some contrast and shadow made that piece pop. I’ve had that set for years but never used it 🙄 I am definitely going to start playing now. Thanks Taria ❤️
Thanks a lot. My watercolor pictures always look so flat, and I tend to color them in like a child. I dont get this pop. your deep shades and strong contrasting colors always amaze me. I also use the Pitt Artist Pens and love them but obviously I still dont dare to really go in with them. Probably just a confidence thing? All the best to you.🤗🌻
Great video, you manage to be very helpful and instructive without being formulaic. A before and after view of the sketch next to one another would have been nice, I found myself going back to the middle to compare and see the difference contrast made.
Excellent. Thanks very much for this. I’ve watched both John H and Ian F but somehow you’ve made the technique more accessible than Ian. And Ian’s markers are fugitive, so I like the idea of Pit pens better.
Hi Taria. Love your videos. This video gives me the push I need to use more mixed media. When I start with watercolor I tend to use watercolor for all the details and shading as well. They might be not subtle enough or indeed end up muddying my picture. I don’t have these Faber Castell pens. But I will make a note to myself to use my colored pencils with my watercolors instead.
You are so welcome! Yes using colour pencils with your watercolours would work great too - I think it's fun to use a mixture of supplies. I don't always use the pens for shading but I really love the effect it gives :)
Good understanding for contrast now, when I can see it, it makes more sense, thanks for showing this.. Now how and where do I show white or highlights?
helloooooo... I was wondering if you could do a castle loose sketch watercolor painting? like a squirrel's castle or something? I am trying to do one myself, ever since I found your channel I simply cannot get enough of your art style.. just brilliant all of it!! I was wondering what your approach would be in sketching a castle would be, hence my comment. :) once again ..absolutely LOVE your feed!!
@@tarias_sketchy_adventures Bah! I made a mistake :3 !! it's called '' SQUIRE's CASTLE'' ; It's a castle somewhere in the US (Ohio) that I found on the internet. BUT! Squirrel's Castle could be a potential castle name, I think its pretty neat. SOOoo... for sketching them lot, I wonder what your approach would be? I mean with respect to brick detail, would you sketch it? or would you deal with that with paint or probably do both here and there maybe? ( in case it were a close up of a part of a castle ; like how you have your sketches of the front of houses and all that) ..... SOOOOO I would love to learn from your videos and once again LOVE your work! :) cheers!!
@@nathandmello5065 ahhh i googled and saw Squire's Castle and wondered if it was a typo! I have sketched a few castles, and I have approached it differently depending on the scene. I tend to prefer to NOT sketch every brick. You can indicate the bricks with watercolour or sometimes I just draw a few bricks in a few key places and then the eye fills in the rest. I think this would be a cool video idea so leave it with me - I'm not sure how soon I can do it but its on my list. But look out for a video soon regarding a prison tower...it may help a little....I shall emphasise the bit where I draw in some of the bricks which you should help with your question a little - but the castle is on the list!!
@@tarias_sketchy_adventures Thanks for the tip! Can't wait for the castle video! :D there aren't too many videos on them and the pictures seem very direct - paint on outlines- Althought, from your sketch styles and previous paintings I think you'd have a swell toutorial... SOOO many things to draw! castles are my current favourit at this time! soo many colours so many types! :) Cheers!!
They are two very different styles once you use these pens. One I would call traditional or classic, which I still love and this one that you are doing is a newer way Both are valuable imo.
I just found out your channel and I am addicted. Thank you so much for all your tips! Just a question: while I dont get the markers from Faber Castell can I use copic markers instead? Are they a reasonable raplacement for this specific goal of shading? Thank you
Hi Marita - you can use copics - but they are alcohol markers (whereas the Faber Castells are india ink) so they probably will bleed through your page - so you just need to watch out for that - but otherwise they should be ok as an alternative...
I like it very much

I would never have thought of the shades of grey pens! This exploded my brain. Thank you from B.C. Canada.

Either a Sakura Gelly Roll (preferably the 0.8 size) or the Uni Ball Signo....hope it helps!
