Really, really, enjoyed this as it forced me to stay away from overdoing the project. Maybe, provide one of these minimalist lessons a month. TY again, Toby.
I love your tutorials. I almost gave up on sketching because I tend to get lost in details. Now i discovered your way of loose sketching, now I have fun sketching again. So thank you for sharing your skills.
Another super session Toby, thank you. You asked for suggestions for more minimalist topics: how about a few flowers in 2 colours? Would enjoy seeing a non-twee treatment of flowers in the minimalist Toby style. Cheers!
This is brilliant, Toby! I think it's a skill we can develop over time because simplifying requires a good deal of visual discrimination - what is essential to conveying the scene. Similarly, making decisions about use of colour when "less is more" is the goal can also demand quite a sophisticated sense of design. You've given us something else to work at.
This is lining up with exactly what I want to learn about, minimalism and lots of water. I guess it's common to get too hung up on details. I'm like a lot of people, I don't know how little I need to draw in order to make the picture read like what I'm trying to portray.
THis is great! Love the minimalist style. Perfect instruction for my upcoming international travel. This would be a lovely way to approach travel sketching. thanks again for the great tips!
I truly enjoyed watching your tutorial tonight. I'm just starting this loose sketching and it's a real challenge as I'm quite a perfectionist. I'm hoping this will change that in my art projects. Oh, I love the metal cups you use to organize your pencils, brushes, scissors, etc. Would you please share where you got that? Thank you. Looking forward to more of your lessons! Thank you so much.
Wow, this minimalistic video has huge implications on my work. Going to give it a try first thing tomorrow. Thank you very much, Toby, keep up the good work.
great tutorial as usual. It look easy. But it's my first watercolor approach and I need to understand better the water and brush usage, and manage my paint flow.. I'll have to practice!
So pleased I’ve discovered your channel. I’ve always wanted to do this sort of painting and you’ve given me the knowledge and confidence to do it! I’m off to Prague and Budapest soon so plan to do a sketch a day! Many thanks
Please do trees. All by themselves. Conifer and deciduous. Then a vid on negative space. What is it? When to use it. How to do it. Perhaps a Forest of trees and a bouquet of flowers/leaves. I struggle with these and need slow clear instructions. I believe it’s perfect for a “Toby Sketch Tutorials” Paint on! Cheers
Of course I subscribed! :) Your approach for loose sketching intrigues me as I’m always working on how to keep my paintings loose & fresh. Thank you for the excellent easy to follow breakdown!!! ♡
Toby, I love your videos and your sketching style. Would you mind making a video about shooting reference photos. I am assuming you use your own. Any advice on this subject would be appreciated. Thanks.
@@borleyboo5613Perhaps just not use the term yourself, if it irks you. English is already an amalgamation of words from many sources and your use of ‘old English’ made me smile. I studied Old English for a while - it’s the root of today’s English yet completely unintelligible to speakers of modern English which is a constantly evolving language. I use ‘plein air’ coz it gives me a little thrill to use terms relevant to a new skill I’m trying to develop. Au revoir!
The Impressionists, who were French, represented quite a revolution in art in their day. They were the first to advocate painting in the open air, hence it being called “en plein air” which was their language. Using the term might be honouring them. But just saying you’re gonna paint outside works too haha.
I might change how I've been sketching until and move most of my line work to the end rather than the start. Kind of like it was a paint first sketch but not, just a very basic skeleton.
I have terrible trouble drawing corner buttresses on churches. Not so much when viewed from the side, but when viewed straight on or partially to the side. I’d love to see a video about this as I love drawing churches. 👍😃
Toby, you have still not answered the really important question. Are you Toby or not Toby, that is the question? Actually more seriously why did you not paint the sky grey? It seems to me a major feature of the scene, quite a moody grey.
Congrats on your first two paintings, it of course takers time to understand how to get the best out of your tools, but amazing job on getting started!

They're actually faber castell clip cups - I've been given a few as 'promotional items' in the years so now most of them act as storage...

This is a lovely idea - I'll have a think about how to portray this...
how long do ink to dry before painting water colours on top
your process has been very inspirational!! i have found painting all over again. Thank you for the great tutorials.
You are so welcome!
Toby if you go enplien air have you got a goto set of colours?
I know I may sound like a grump, but why must we say this in French. It sounds so pretentious. Why not good old English ‘open air’.
Just may basic palette, the same one listed on urbansketch.co.uk/supplies

@@TobySketchLoose Ah, brilliant! Thanks Toby. 😃👍
You make it look too easy!! I try & try to be loose with watercolor it’s just too much at a times
How did you manage not to accidentally splash on the tower?!
Chance vs experience
👍🏻🇧🇷
