Great practical tips!! Thank you! In the past I hardly ever sketched on holiday because I feel pressured when other people are waiting, but last year I went away on my own and sketched every day. I loved it! I was only a one hour drive from home but it was lovely. I made my own sketchbook (a square one) with mixed media paper. I didn’t really know what I was doing but I ended up with basically an illustrated journal. I left a few blank pages which I filled in after I came home. I also drew maps of my walks and even included some photos. It had a bit of everything but it captures the memories so much better than just photos!

Thanks for this. My stylistic preference is for an A4 sketchbook as I can always use a half page and the versatile Pentel pocket brush. Can I recommend taking a quick photo of your subject before you begin? Maybe I'm slower/more disaster prone than most but that record has allowed me to finish stuff later despite adverse weather/unwanted company or obscuring or removal of the subject. ( The most memorable was having a picturesque dead tree felled mid sketch! )

I have a very old Windsor and Newton travel watercolour kit with half pans, a small brush, mixing palettes and a small bottle for water. It all folds together really neatly into a small box and is really handy. I used up the paints years ago but refilled the pans from tubes. If I didn’t have that I would definitely be using your great idea with the mini ice cube tray. Thanks Liz.

Such a lovely and helpful video. I’m going to be brave and start a sketch book this summer. Just to take out and about on my walks initially. I’m a beginner artist, so I’m hoping this will build my confidence and also get me away from following step by step tutorials all the time.

I have taken a similar art kit and A5 watercolour book on a couple of overseas holidays recently, but I rarely found the time to sketch while on the move. Your video has encouraged me to do more holiday sketches on my next trip (Turkey and Greece), and I’ll make sure to set time aside just for sketching. I really enjoyed this video - thank you. 🤓🇦🇺

Great tips Liz! I'm going to Japan very soon and will be my first time sketching so i'm quite excited! Thanks too for the reminder of my journal my rules! I was watching lots of people doing their sketches from start to finish on location, but I didn't wanna drag those with me to wait for me to finish my sketch! So I was thinking of doing really quick, less than 10-minute sketches on location and then finishing it all up with color when we're back at the hotel or if there's a long wait somewhere :)
