Enhancing precision through URBAN SKETCHING (over and over)

  • There's no greater challenge than ignoring the inner voice that says you are a failure. That sounds kind of dramatic, but it's something I face every time I sit down to draw buildings. Architecture presents new challenges for a landscape artist who usually paints more loose and expressive. I want to improve my accuracy, and the only way to do that is through hard work. In this video I show you my process for doing field studies and taking it back to the studio to practice in more detail. I'll also chat about what it all means to me. #urbansketching #gouache #markersketch
In this video I'm using markers, ink, gouache and more. (names of my supplies are on the screen during the video)

A huge part of painting and drawing from observation is identifying and organizing the essential information in the subject, and filtering out the "noise" and assumptions about how we think things look. This is a great lesson in figuring out what information to encode in lines and colors, and how to avoid distortions that can throw off a picture! It's encouraging to learn that accomplished professionals like @SarahBurnsStudio have the same self-doubt as people new to art- it's very kind of you to share this with the community!

This is a quote every beginner has to have framed in their room and look at it every day. 👌

And that there in the sketch book, folks, is in the true meaning of an Urban “sketch”. Awesome!
Later, you can turn your sketch into a full “painting” … if you want. Good job, thank you.

“Drawing is a cycle of mistakes, learning from it and doing better next time.” So true. I love that you share your struggles and normalize them as part of an artist’s practice. It was awesome to see what you recorded and where you took your plein air (or plein car?) sketches once you were back in the studio.

Excellent! I loved seeing you use the markers. I think I’ll give those a try. Also, it is so important to show people that a real artist does the same scene several times to improve accuracy. So many quit after the first attempt. As a scientific illustrator, I was given a dozen boxes of snake skeletons from the museum’s collections. The specimens had been collected all over the state of Florida. Half were rattlesnakes and half were water moccasins. The assignment I was given by the archaeologists was to find a way to identify which snakes they had found in middens in south Florida and to illustrate the difference. I did find a way after much study and a lot of measurements with calipers. I had to draw the set five times each view (dorsal, ventral, front, back, and side) before I got the accuracy perfect enough so any scientist could see it. A photo doesn’t do the job here because it gives TOO MUCH information. I find that the same goes for fine art now that I have retired. What you leave out makes all the difference in conveying your thoughts and emotions while visiting the site. Thank you again, Sarah. You are my favorite fine art teacher. Much love and hugs. ❤

I learn so much more when I repeat a drawing/painting. It’s actually enjoyable because the second time feels more comfortable

@@SarahBurnsStudio Yes! And, you notice things that you didn’t see the first time because you are overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information present. Deciding what to put in and what to leave out is the critical first step. It is where beginners get hung up. As an illustrator I had someone else telling me what the goal was. All I had to do then 😁 was figure out how to do it in the most informative, attractive way. Creating an esthetically pleasing drawing in pen and ink or graphite that DOESN’T look like fine art is a challenge. I went back to the old master scientific illustrators to learn how to do that. I was a science major not an art major.

I've been drawn to old buildings my entire life. They have so much history, what have they seen, what have the people who ,iced/worked/travelled there experienced? I'm in the early stages of my urban sketching journey, but I love it. This is another wonderful video, and it taught me a lot.

Ok, I just finished watching and could have listened and watched for several hours!! Your excitement was contagious and the pictures and videos made me feel as tho I was smelling the air and actually could feel the cool, wet air especially at the harbor…
I would love to live there and good for you that you actually DID move when young…
I was going to tell you to scan Ian’s and frame it as you will feel that joy each time you see it…but, you actually have the sketch of the best part of being there so you will have that to hang for the memories….
Again, thank you so very much for sharing and bringing me along with you during this amazing week ❤

Love the urban sketching! But I was also one that voted for it😁. Your drawing that you did back in your studio looked so nice with the white gouache and toned paper. Thanks for doing this video as it is very interesting to see the old architecture in Scotland that has so much character. I too like the natural landscapes that you usually do but this is just fun to see something different. I love the mix up seeing the different beauty that Scotland has to offer. Also thanks for listing on the video the different pens and markers that you use. That was a lot of fun! Thanks again Sarah! 🎨🖌️☀️🌙⭐️🌎

Enjoyed watching your process, Sarah, and learning from your sharing. Years ago I took a watercolor class, then read a book that focused on light & shadows in relation to buildings. I have looked at the world around me since then with much more awareness & appreciation - my favorite time of the day, because of the lighting, is what I learned people call "the golden hour".

Man. I love watching these, and yet feel so despondent and frustrated by the end. XP Even despite your advice, I feel like things just don't click when I'm trying to draw or paint. I can do flat cartoony things, but trying to translate more detailed things, like shadows, doesn't seem to move from my eyes to my brain to my hands.
ANYWAY. Early morning lamentations. :P Thank you for always sharing your process and your thoughts about it! It IS admittedly shocking, as an outsider, to think anyone with that much skill could ever think they're doing it wrong; but then, that's the creative's curse, I suppose! 🤗❤️

It takes a lot of time. I’ve spent most of my life drawing. When I was younger I drew nonstop. I found books in the library that showed how to draw animals and trees and such. I barely remember those but I remember loving the feeling of accomplishment when I drew a horse from memory 😂 I bet if I looked at it now it would look like an alien..

I love both versions! The marker version just has a “fun” feeling and I love how you simplified the background buildings by making them all pale blue. The gouache version feels more “sophisticated” and I like how it takes advantage of the paper colour. I get so much from seeing your process outside and in the studio…thank you! There are some buildings that I really enjoy sketching multiple times (a few lighthouses, in particular, that I have personal attachment to), but I’d have a tough time (mentally) redoing a complicated building / scene multiple times. I have no probably painting trees, rocks and beaches a “million” times/ways, but getting the perspective right on some buildings is just so fiddly, I hold my breath that I don’t screw it up when I apply paint 😅.

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  Год назад +1

Haha I know what you mean! I think it gets easier as you repeat the same building, my hope is that after a lot of repetition, those nerves vanish and I can just sit down and dive into a complicated building or streetscape. My ultimate goal or what I’m kind of training for in the long run is to go to Italy for a month and paint my heart out 😍

It's really encouraging watching you practice urban sketching. Not that it's necessary outside of your comfort zone, but watching you practice on increasing your mental library with more architecture/proportions is so much fun. I've only messed around a little with on site urban sketching, and these videos are making me want to go outside and fill my own sketchbook! I'm looking forward to hearing how these study sessions help out with the workshop you're attending later this month.

What kinds of notes do you make? I’d love to see a video with multiple iterations of this process for you (or maybe you already have one?).
