By adding a bright red and a couple of dull yellows to black and white, you can paint with the appearance of full color. This palette of colors is often associated with Swedish painter Anders Zorn-though in his case he often used plenty of blues and greens and other colors as well.
For this location sketch, I paint the raw sienna underpainting in advance with casein, but you could use acrylic-gouache, or gouache mixed with some acrylic matte medium for the underpainting. The underpainting gives me a base to work over.
On location, I start by drawing the main perspective lines with a brush, showing the edge of the counter and the vertical column.
I cover most of the underpainting with semi-opaque layers of gray mixed from white and black. I look for big gradations, which I apply with layers of black and white.
I paint the computer first because it’s so important. But that means that in order to paint the objects behind it I have to paint them around it.
Greg arrives at his workstation. I say, “You don’t have to hold still. I’ll just paint you while you’re working.” With gouache I can opaquely cover those background areas that I had already defined. I add the tiny final accents in bright red.
    COLORS I USED
    Titanium white (gouache): amzn.to/2XSOld4
    Raw sienna: amzn.to/2uXM82i
    Yellow ochre: amzn.to/2SfXc2O
Light red, English red, or Venetian red: amzn.to/2OmRwTL
    Pyrrol red (gouache): amzn.to/2XdPcS7
    Ivory black: amzn.to/2Ta46s7
    BRUSHES AND OTHER ART SUPPLIES
    Richeson travel brush set: amzn.to/2xwq1Rr
Richeson “Grey Matters” brush set: amzn.to/2YeNO0P

    Water cup: amzn.to/2soTw2L
    Pentalic watercolor sketchbook: amzn.to/2L989y2

Yeah, this absolutely boggled my mind. The contrast between the artist’s seemingly uncoordinated, simple hand movements, and the result of those movements in the painting is jarring. This is what happens when you observe light programmatically!

Totally mind boggling, a few brush strokes, a few colours and it looks almost like a tiny photograph! The brain would just add the few details that aren't captured.
I hope the tire shop gets a print of this masterpiece, because it's way toooo awesome to stay hidden in a sketchbook. :D

Absolutely fantastic. Love the bits of history, business philosophy, slice of life stuff you capture, on top of producing an excellent painting. Ive always been a fan of that kind of observational recording of what some people might consider mundane / uninteresting. Its these everyday interactions that end up defining a lot of our lives. Great work James !

James, you CRUSHED this one, high and deep over everything in center field.
Great subject choice! It's so mundane, so everyday that we forget what we're even looking at. People hurry into repair shops, burdened with schedules and deadlines, unable to relax or enjoy the simplicity of their surroundings, so anxious to get going, back to the grind they complain so much about.
Rarely does anyone bother attempting a sketch, let alone a painting of a waiting area at an auto repair shop.
Very few artists are so equipped and ready to throw down and paint everywhere they go. Thanks for this "simple" demonstration of what can be done if you don't quit on your passion.

It's amazing to actually hear and see someone else's understanding of the intimacy of places and people you see everyday. Because I think every artist understands it but it's just so much more interesting to see how that understanding effects not just the art, but also the process of making it.
