Oh baby don't it feel like heaven right now
Don't it feel like something from a dream
Yeah I've never known nothing quite like this
Don't it feel like tonight might never be again
We know better than to try and pretend
Baby no one could'a ever told me 'bout this
    I said yeah yeah
The waiting is the hardest part
Every day you see one more card
You take it on faith, you take it to the heart
The waiting is the hardest part
Well yeah i might have chased a couple women around
All it ever got me was down
Then there were those that made me feel good
But never as good as I'm feeling right now
Baby you're the only one that's ever known how
To make me wanna live like I wanna live now
    I said yeah yeah
The waiting is the hardest part
Every day you get one more yard
You take it on faith, you take it to the heart
The waiting is the hardest part
Oh don't let it kill you baby, don't let it get to you
Don't let it kill you baby, don't let it get to you
I'll be your bleedin' heart, I'll be your cryin' fool
Don't let this go too far
Don't let it get to you

What I love about this video is how elated Eddie Vedder looks to be on stage with Petty, and how much he clearly loves this song. It really comes through that he’s fulfilling a childhood dream. To see the guy who’s most famous for all those depressing early Pearl Jam songs (which I also love) look so happy and sincere doing such an optimistic song like The Waiting, it’s heartwarming.

The thing with artists like Eddie (such as Dave Grohl) is that they are real fans of the music. They enjoy it. They enjoy making it, they enjoy performing it, and they appreciate and respect the history of the music that came before them. When they do covers, it's always an amazing cover. Modern day artists have no respect for the art, it's all style and no substance. Peace out and enjoy the classics.

I’ve noticed the same thing in videos of Eddie preforming with other artists too. It’s so genuine and respectful. I do think part of it is just musical chemistry, but it also seems Eddie’s just trying to do these songs justice and asking “you think I’m doing alright?” He does seem to get even more comfortable as the performance goes on.

I am ashamed to say that I have heard Petty's music all of my adult life {I'm 55) without appreciating him or his talent. The day he passed away, I got calls and texts from my children telling me the news. His death had such an effect on them that I have been watching and listening to videos and interviews ever since, seeking understanding. I am so thankful now that I did! He was so much more than an incredible talent and performer! One hell of a good man! Humbly, I will spend the rest of my adult life making up for my earlier lack of appreciation.

Just read your comment better than never. But I'm close to your age and always loved him & he's so damn hot! Just say'n. But until his death I didn't know how much that love has grown. So much respect for him as a human being!! My God, what a man!! His loyalty to fans, other musicians is off the charts! He always brought people up no matter who they were! He always did the right thing. And sharing his soul thru his music just blows me away. I once we asked who you would want to be ship wrecked with on island who would be, I am glad I said , Tom Petty. And that was back in the 90's. So much love I have for the person and his legacy.

WishIcould showmyname i only listen to music for the art and soul pump it gives me. Since you brought it up tho i have to say that a lyric from Ed sums up all of mankinds trouble with govt and economies, "we have a greed with wich we have agreed" you see capitalism, democracy as done by america has failed as well as socialism, marxism, totaliarism, and all due to human greed. Once rulers get over on the people they take all they can. In america today it is corperations and lobbyist who run off with all the wealth. So who gives a shit about a muscicuans politics really.

Well, I agree with the angst and fight, but not the conclusion. Falling back to a faith in something that failed again and again a hundred years ago to the present is not the answer. Nothing will help us than self-responsibility and restraining the bully corporate entities. That does not mean moving far left is what I mean. Some corrections, not the abandonment of all that brought all this technology like us conversing in this post. Nothing extreme ever works. I get pumped up and feel sympathy, too but we need to be careful about where it leads us. Change for the sake of change is dangerous.

+Jimmy Giles Have to agree. I couldn't give a shit what political ideology, religion, etc. an artist has. If I limited my literature, music and art to those with the notions that I have, I would be missing out on far too much. That said, Eddie did an absolutely stunning vocal on this one!

That line is Reformed Theology- c1520 1) Belief/Trust can be valid even if it "emotionless" because the Son of God /also Son of Man, felt all our emotions , in order to be the one that "has been" there to the point of "tasting death"for each of his children. (Hebrews) The "taking it to the heart" is the journey where He rarely shows signposts- until one is desperate for one.If he shows too many good coincidenses "faith" which is clearly his favorite "exercise" or quality that Jesus Christ beamed at any who "knew what he was capable of "- what a run on- The Roman (gentile ) CENTURIAN Gentiles was ADAMANT that Chist not need to travel to his abode - to heal his greatly loved servant. CHRIST was so aghast at this Gentile that he told ech one of us- it's about faith when one is not certain- I have always hated WAITING on anything significant- including aS a boy XMAS, Dr Offices where they fool you as r=the "waiting room" is empty only to find each room is filled. Guys and gals, if you had a "succesfull first date, to the point that one is virtually certain of a 2nd, but you are the person who saw a "fatal flaw" , then it is the male or female duty to stop the agonizing of the one WAITING and call the other person and exit the situation AND NO, DO NOT blare out the "Truth" which is getting common in our society. Sto the waiting by the phone of yesteryear. MY THEORY: At Jesus' first being pinned on doing a major miracle BY HIS MOTHER, , yet he seems no too happy. My take-- Jesus also hated signposts on the way as he had to learn he was w/o signs, but seeing his ownself gradually fitting the qualifications - Did the Father want him to figure it out until the point where his faith That He is the Messiah reaches certainty, JUST AS EACH CHRISTIAN MUST CONCLUDE the same signposts of which we have so many. With the exception of Beyonce, I love the other artists he chooses to sing with....Neil Young, The Doors, The Who, Peter Gabriel. I just discovered this, what a treasure, two of my favorite all time rockers! RIP Tom Petty, I'm going to miss you!

Dear Tom, I miss you, but am ever so happy that there are many recordings of your fine music. Asking Eddie Vedder to sing next to you is a fine example of your willingness to simply add more talent, and share. I saw you at San Diego State University

There's not too many big names in the music industry that never got big egos... Tom Petty is certainly one of them.. He had nothing to prove to anybody... He felt he was on the path of his calling... He walked it with purpose and with grace.... Humanity lost a great role model when he died, thankfully his music will live on..
Thank you Tom Petty, for loving us as much as we loved you...

knox2613 Pearl Jam never appealed to me because I think they are depressing like Sound Garden but of course both bands are talented and legends. However, I like Vedder here and have always been a huge Petty fan. Tom Petty and David Bowie gone too soon. Listened to both since I was a kiddo.

    • @daveinindy

Pearl Jam is one of the best-ever live bands - well, make that just "bands". The focus on tone & tightness - they are to me the definition of a rock band: hard-driving, exceptionally talented, and so very together. For me, the hard-to-appreciate piece has been Eddie's vibrato/shake/warble ... But he also has a great voice (particularly when he chooses not to do that warble thing).

The Eagles ain't too shabby either, at least in terms of their best five or ten songs. Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble kick some serious ass too. R.E.M. recorded some stellar tracks. As did ZZ Top, The Allman Brothers Band, and the Goo Goo Dolls.
