Norm Macdonald wrote this skit... his first week there. Phil was great, but he's playing the real Burt Reynolds. Norm was playing Burt Reynolds from Smokey and the Bandit... and that was much funnier!
The performers were new to Norm's style of humor so they didn't get the full potential of the script. They didn't know he was a genius yet. His jokes are simple and go for the laugh just like his later stuff.
This is why Norm is one of the all time greats in SNL history. Two legends at it right here, Phil and Kevin. Norm comes to the show few years later and does the most memorable impressions of both Burt and Larry.

Exactly why I thought Norm sucked on this show. This was and will always be hilarious. In the wake of this, MacDonald was an afterthought. You had to be there.

@@theplayersclub1126 Both impressions are great in their own ways. And Norm's impression is the most memorable, as it is the one most remembered.
Norm says Lorne hated this sketch. But he clearly recognized that it was going to work for his audience because it opened the show. Really you put Phil Hartman and Kevin Nealon in anything as characters and it's going to be gold.
Norm Macdonald did impressions of both Larry King and Burt Reynolds that were light years a head of these two SNL actors. Macdonald took it to another level!
How could Lorne not love this sketch? Norm was a genius.
