This isn’t a parody. This is spot on Phil Donahue.
Hartmann was a genius at that with many of his impressions. I can imagine Phil and Marlo were laughing at this at this house!!!
The impression is, however Donahue is the complete opposite with regards to women’s oppression. But then again you have to do something to make it funny otherwise you’re just impersonating.
Phil Hartman was the best
It really is. In the early 90s, my girlfriend and I got practically yanked off the sidewalk when we were visiting NYC and into a Donahue taping. Phil Hartman (RIP) absolutely nails his impersonation here.
FWIW, I greatly prefer this sketch to the real thing.
@@jarnold3415 Phil did this PERFECTLY!
Good Lord, Phil Hartman was an absolute master of his craft.
Yes! I loved his cave man skit the best 🤣
@@kendrakausau Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer was hilarious. But I was referring to this particular impression, it’s so spot on it’s eerie.
@@MultiThrashed if he was using cue cards he didn’t look like it
@@ObamaFromKenya I doubt it. The impression of Phil Donahue is like, dead on.
He was great in CB4 too.
“Well you would really have to meet him”. Priceless! Jan Hooks was a Genius. She was definitely underrated.
she was, but she said later she had terrible stage fright on SNL and it was a terrible time for her, despite that her work was flawless,
@@michaelsix9684 09o⁰
Jan Hooks was my favorite.
She was amazing in Pee Wee's Big Adventure as the Alamo tour guide
I loved Phil Hartman and Jan Hooks!!! Priceless!!!
"Well, you'd really have to meet him." They way Jan moved from devastated lover to defending the creep is genius! She was one of the most underrated women in SNL's history. She was SO good!
Now he sold you to an Iraqi businessman?
Can't believe she passed.
Dead on impersonation of not only Phil Donahue, but the Donahue talk show.
Agree! I used to watch Donahue and Phil nails it!
Phil Hartman was simply the #1 SNL cast member ever. He did impersonations, straight, and comedic roles extremely prolifically. He had no weaknesses.
Best Bill Clinton ever!
He’s my all time favorite cast member.
Definitely one of the best narrators and writers in all of SNL history. If you neglect his roles in front of the camera and just look at his writing he's easily one of the all time best on just that alone.
His weakness was his wife. And, it cost them both their lives.
@@rigelmoon9030 Given the sketch here...that's a bit of a depressing point.
5:22 The way Hartman acts during the caller had me rolling. Hands on hips, looking confused. That's EXACTLY what Donahue used to do.
And tapping his mic on his head! LoL
@@DiscoDashco 🏆
Parody is typically over the top. Phil is just doing it straight. That’s what makes this even funnier
I worked for Phil Donahue for a few years. This is him. Phil and Phil, two great men.
Did Phil Donahue ever say anything about this sketch?
Darrell Hammond's Phil was more pinpoint accurate, no?
"Phil? Like the groundhog?"

@@cnj1000 I believe he had Hartman on his show, playing him. So that says something...
Phil Hartman was perfect as Donahue. His voice, looks and gestures are spot on! He is missed!
He was a phenomenon.
SNL will never be as funny as this era. Nothing was sacred and everything was fair game. The casts impersonations were nailed every time
This was the funniest era of SNL...my God what talent. Doesn't get the recognition it deserves.
SNL could do 8 minutes skits back then because Phil and company were brilliant.
Yes! loved watching SNL back then.. best skits with a talented cast bar none...really who could pull this off?
@@davidrynberk5207 When did things change where it seems like in every skit now they are reading cue cards. How did the earlier actors pull it off?
@@maxgordon6701 ...by reading the cue cards?
they still do.
@@sillygoose635 I'm sorry, I meant and still be funny.
Jan Hooks was taken away from us far too soon..what a talented lady and a beautiful woman..I will forever love her.
Oh, man, when she teamed up with Martin Short to play Mrs. Jiminy Glick! Pure comedy gold.
I was devastated to find out she passed so young. I didn't even know until years later that she was no longer with us and it hurt. She was so talented and underrated (I mean these days people rarely talk about her and that's a shame). I love the skit with her as a waitress and Alec Baldwin--it was brilliant!
Jan Hooks was SNL's utility infielder of the era. Fantastic versatility, she could play whatever role the sketch demanded, and play it pitch-perfect.
Yep and also Norm Mcdonald.
Greatly missed.
Phi Hartman's voice inflections of Donahue were spot-on in this skit. I really think the cast members during this era of SNL were the most talented group in its history.
“Phi” Hartman was his college fraternity name.
@@vistalite It's a sketch not a skit.
I couldn’t agree more
I need to be Donahue for Halloween and break out this impression
Always felt this way too! Definitely the most talented cast - and best actors/actresses - ever on SNL
Phil Hartman had that thing Bill Murray has...They just walked into the room and you were already laughing.Just funny and likeable from the get go.
i thought dave letterman had that too
@@elizabethbennet4791 And Chris Farley.
Bill Murray’s “talent” level was never 👎🏽 e v e r on parr with Hartman’s. Not even a little, Including with the “funny” factor you allege.
I realize Murray is an original cast member & all that.
But nah. Hartman n Farley are unmatched.
I feel like there hasn't been a cast member like that on SNL in a while. Closest recent one would be Kate McKinnon (sp?)
That's how I feel about Keenan. 😂
Saw this when it originally aired...laughed so hard..."He sold you to an Iraqi businessman..." killed me. Jan was so good.
That one took me out lol, Phil's delivery and Jan's reaction, they were both so great, i'll never get over not watching them grow old, it was like losing good friends.
Absolutely precious. ‼️👍❤️
"... held orgies..." 😂 And Victoria saying she couldn't go to sea because she had to wait by the phone.
_Women Good, Men Bad,_ got a huge laugh and stuck with me forever.
"Alright, I'm a lesbian. OK, are you satisfied?" was memorable too, and she may have repeated it on other sketches.
This whole skit is gold. Almost too true to life to be funny, yet funny all the same. "You would really have to meet him." Exactly.
Phil Hartman, Victoria Jackson, Jan Hooks and Nora Dunn -- what a stellar cast!
Sure Hartman, Dunn and Hooks yes.....Jackson.....uh......not quite
Ya. That Jon Lovitz and Kevin Nealon really stunk up the show or did you insert their Names, in a "Subliminal", yet, "dishonest", sort of way?
@@ihavefallenandicantreachmy2113
I said nothing about them here because neither one of them is really in this sketch. Jon Lovitz was very good when featured.
Nealon was passible at best.
@@billysullivan6788 Hey, passable on this!
@@bob494949 thanks for the correction. But I'm not changing my opinion.
Jan Hooks was not selected on her first audition for SNL, she was selected after her second tryout, thank goodness she got on the show

I miss Phil Hartman. He was hilarious! He was also sooo sassy. 😂
Yeah, he is impossible to replace.
The best Frank Sinatra!!!!
I just stepped in a big pile of sassy!
He would be 71 today if he hadn't been shot to death

When he taps his head with the microphone I lose it every time. Love those women in front of nealon just cracking up
Me too!! They're so busy laughing I forget how horrible Nealon's character is.
Same.
What a treat for the studio audience!
Jan Hooks was such a beauty & I remember her when she was the tour guide in Pee Wee's Big Adventure. RIP Jan & Phil.
she was great on TUSH cable show in Atlanta 80-81, it's on RUclips and she was very hot then
I love that scene, especially when her gum is about to fall out of her mouth.
@@kylewoolsey6635 The Alamo scene was amazing. I remember going back to watch the movie after she appeared on SNL and then recognizing who she was. Phil Hartman also has a brief line at the end of the movie as a reporter.
“Well you would really have to meet him.”
This entire parody is brilliant and so very well written and delivered. None of it is “too much”. Being quite believable then when it starts to veer to absurd it pulls right back to a replication of the famous talk show then moves again to punchlines and character parodies and types. In the end it smoothly feels like you have just watched the Phil Donahue show. But you haven’t. You just watched some serious SNL cast talent back in the day.
Exactly. Well written comment. ‼️👍❤️
@@user-cq9zl9om6u I will agree, . Well written comment. ‼👍❤
I forgot I wasn't watching Phil.
OMG!! Phil was a genius. His impersonation isn't even exaggerated and I felt like I was really watching Donahue! Unbelievable talent! We love ❤ you and miss you , Phil Hartman!
His voice is exactly like Phil Donahue's!
Phil Hartman's portrayal of Donahue spot on.
Anytime Hartman's on, it's GOLD !!!
Phil freaking Donahue, what a legend. And nobody under 30 knows who he was.
I would think 40-50+ he was on from 67-96 so I think if you weren't at minimum a teenager or older by 1996 you wouldn't know.
I'm 38, and I remember all of those talk show greats. Jenny Jones, too. My mom watched all of them in addition to Oprah of course. In rewatching old Donahue clips he definitely made great fodder for SNL. He could often be over-the-top haha
He’s a kook and a nobody. He’s lucky Phil did an impression of him.

Me too. I agree!
Same timeline for me. I VCRd each episode of the Hartman Era and watched them over and over
Best cast imo
Kevin Nealon struggled to get his lines right, and sometimes botched it. Also, he wasn't cut out for Weekend Update after Dennis Miller and it showed. But when he got it right, like in this sketch, it was pretty good.
Definitely one of the tightest casts, if not the absolute tightest, in SNL's history. Each one was stellar, and each gave it a hundred percent, all of the time.
100 % Phil Donahue, hair, dress, voice intonations and mannerisms 💖💖💖💖💖 Phil Hartman RIP
Phil Hartman could play anyone... A great comedian and actor taken from us way too soon...

I'm grateful i got to enjoy their talents and will never forget them, RIP.
the poses Phil Hartman does are spot on!! lol
Love how the crowd members next to Kevin Nealon are laughing. Lol.
For a second I was like, "Wow, they really nailed the feel of the 80's even with the audience!" Then I was like, "Oh...right...because this WAS in the 80's." lol
I use the line "women good men bad" all the time!
This cast was ridiculously talented!
Outside of the original Saturday Night Live cast this is the greatest cast.
"Yes! You are correct, Sir!"
The men and women who worked with Phil Hartman on SNL had an apropos nickname for him: "The Glue," because, according to Mike Myers on 'Inside the Actor's Studio,' Phil held the show together. I've never read a bad word about Phil; he was one of those beloved celebrities like Al Yankovic or Fred Rogers. He was one of those people you'd save from his fate if you had a time machine. Miss you, Phil.
Arguably the most underrated cast member ever.
He wasn't underrated. Was highly regarded.
@@abdelrahmanelsheikh5798 Perhaps underrated isn't the proper word, but he was certainly underutilized by Hollywood. The man should've had starring vehicles by the '90s, all he lacked were the right scripts. And also, y'know, the murder.

May be so, although he did have a starring role in the TV sitcom News Radio and won sn Emmy for his SNL work. Agreed though, one of the most talented, versatile and nicest celebrities ever; gone too soon 😢

Legit just came over from watching a Donahue clip and thinking “that’s Hartman’s voice!!”
I had to check and see if he ever did an impression of him.
Every one of them nailed it!!!
Yes!
I think that the late 80’s early 90’s cast and skits were the best! Funny and actually good acting and hilarious timing!
As great as they were, I personally think that the best group was the original cast not only for their extreme talent but because they started something basically new and turned it into one of the things that historians and professors will be discussing for years to come.
They've hit the wall and have been in decline for years, probably will never see a recovery, but when they were good...they were GOOD!
My original "Year of Watching SNL" was 1992-3. In retrospect, I'm so glad I caught Dana Carvey and Phil Hartman in their original runs.
I remember this one ! We went around school on Monday, buddy up on this , Iacocca this. Teachers had no clue.
Phil Hartman really could have carried his own variety/comedy type show on t.v. , he was a step above the vast majority of SNL cast members. I have watched SNL since the very beginning, and the years with Hartman and Carvey had the most consistently funny sketches.
Great news, have your heard of NewsRadio?
I think by his last year on Newsradio he had figured out how to crush it as a comedic actor in a narrative format too. I think he would've gone on to do the kinds of movie roles that J. K. Simmons does and been Oscar-nominated.
Yes! They played off each other so superbly, like brothers.
Yes, he was a standout on that show as well. @@AudreyHepburnCHick

@@raiderking69 I loved her too. So sad she's gone 🙄
Oh gosh I didn’t know she passed... ;(
Love Jan Hooks' character, her crying and suddenly pulling up all smiles to talk about her wonderful husband, now that's comedy. 🤣
I think she did Tammy Faye Baker and they accidentally cut to her while she was putting in eye drops, then used a different camera angle to "fix" the shot for a future broadcast. But people loved the idea that Tammy Faye was fake-crying so I think they restored the original goof after that.
Ever notice these older sketches are like 7-8 minutes long, but it only feels like 2 minutes? Meanwhile, modern sketches are 2-3 minutes and feel like an eternity.
Exactly.
Just the opening word was gold! “Women!”. Hartman was my absolute favorite
So Donohue!
There will never be another SNL cast as good as that mid 80s group. So many talents.
So, spot on. Miss you, Phil Hartman❤
RIP Phil. A true comedic legend!
That was an amazing Donahue. And I love Jan Hooks.
I recently read about how Phil Hartman put in a lot of time preparing for these skits and it shows. There’s no looking at cue cards or breaking character laughing. Far superior show then later years. He’s like the anti Jimmy Fallon. So entertaining and his work lives on as does Jan Hooks’ also brilliant.
Phil was awesome
I was a kid during these fine years of the show. Yep, as others have said, everyone in this skit is great. Somehow never seen it either!
I haven't watched with any regularity in YEARS, admittedly. But seeing more recent skits on youtube and looking at comments, it almost seems like some people think it's some sort of achievement to constantly break character. Part of the humor is acting this ridiculous while playing it straight. Phil Hartman was a master at totally absurd characters played completely straight.
Then - At a certain time.

4pm Channel 4 WNBC in NY watched everyday as a kid and this impression is just so masterful. Phil is just the Best !!!! The pauses, tone of the voice, the delivery....That's how you do it people!
Phil Hartman's impressions were dead on. IMO there has never been another SNL cast member that could nail an impression as well as Mr. Hartman. I'm hard-pressed in this sketch to tell it's not Phil Donahue. RIP Cheers
Darrel Hammond
I just wish he could've done Jerry Springer or Maury. I bet he could've done a dead-on impersonation of both of them.
This is one of my all-time favorites from one of the best line-ups SNL ever had.
