Trompowsky Attack against 2...Ne4 (main line)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 8 июл 2024
- The Trompowsky Attack is a sharp opening which produces interesting and imbalanced positions. Black's main weapon against it is 2...Ne4, which avoids the trade on f6, gains a tempo on the bishop, and forces white to make a decision very early on.

The Trompowsky Attack is an uncommon opening compared to the main line QG and Catalan positions. It's offbeat, creates unique imbalanced positions, and seldom leads to equal drawish positions. It is therefore logical to conclude that it's a fighting opening which white chooses in order to put black on the back foot and to gain a psychological edge.
Most Nf6 players dislike it or hate facing it. It disables them from playing their normal systems and it steers the game into, for them, often unknown territory.
The idea behind the Trompowsky is simple: trade bishop for knight and double black's f pawns. That is a pseudo threat, and black may choose to prevent or allow it. That choice will determine the nature of the position. Black has 6 main choices. Each will be covered in detail in a separate video.
The main line of the Trompowsky starts after 1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5 Ne4
With this move black avoids the capture on f6, making sure his structure is not compromised, he gains a tempo on the g5 bishop, and forces white to react immediately.
White can now choose between 3 options.
Bf4 is the main line and the most solid and most sound.
Bh4, the Edge Variation, leads to very sharp, unusual positions which often favor black.
h4, the Raptor Variation, is the most unsound of the three, and could lead to quick wins for either side.

You can never be disappointed learning from this guy. He explains the openings well, the plans of the openings well. He covers the plans of the variations and side slines well. I truly wish him the best in his career!

My favorite comment yet 23:14 "This avoids the London system and brings it back to insane Trompowsky territory"
LOL too funny yet true
You have the best chess channel. After watching your channel, I realized I never truly understood chess.
By far the best chess channel on RUclips, thank you for putting this much effort in your videos
I hadn't seen your videos before but will watch more now! Thank you for your concise and expansive lesson, I'm playing trompowsky on a chessboard club daily game for my first time, and appreciate this instructive video. Aloha from Hawaii 🤙🏼
Main line Bookmark 20:03, I played the raptor variation a couple of times and after c5 I was losing very bad so I won't try that again, but in general after e6 I can play very aggressively so I ll stick with trompowsky for a while I think it's solid opening
I would also like to ask, would you cover the Bird or English opening once this opening is finished?
GG .... Soon, series about the King's Indian Attack (KIA), the Jobava-London syst, the English-Botvinik syst ?
Prick
Great content! This will be added to my repertoire as black
Also after 1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5 c5 3. d5 Ne4 4. h4 Qb6 5. Nd2 Nxd2 6. Bxd2 Qxb2, the justification does not come in the follow-up e4. Rather, the justification comes in Nf3, which the engines allows for a +1.0 advantage.
Check out this link, i hope it will change your opinion about Raptor (h4) variation: www.chessable.com/short-sweet-the-trompowsky/course/29014/
This video is amazing, thanks so much!
At 29:50, do you play the same regardless of where the Queen retreats to? Say if they went to A4, F5 or all of the way to B8? If they go to A6 or B5, is it worth moving the E pawn to reveal the Bishop? Thanks again!
You are so great!
10:10 if exd5 i dont take on g6 but on h7 with the rook! Great video(s) btw!
Thank you so much just lost to a player because I Didn’t know theory
"If I wanted to play the London, I would have played it" lmaooo
very good
Timestamps would add to your excellent videos 👍
Thanks for the great video as usual! I noticed though that in the edge variation, you really only get "bad" positions as white if you play the move f3. Nd2, or e3 give you more solid positions.
This is true, but then in those lines, wouldn’t you prefer your bishop on f4...so why not go there in the first place?
And in this, we are assuming black doesn’t play g5 right? And instead plays something like c5
@@kylen6430 correct, this would be dr, nf6, bg5, ne4, bh4, c5 or d5 and ne2 or e3
@@jacobtheall222 so first, this discussion becomes irrelevant as soon as black plays g5. And after c5, At the end of the day, the bishop just looks silly on that diagonal and would prefer to be on b8-h2 diagonal where it can have more impact on the center. So it seems prudent to just play bf4 to begin with, taking away the luster of g5 and putting the dsb where it wants to be anyways
@@kylen6430 well it depends if black wants to go for this line, if white really dislikes these positions obviously the edge variation isnt for you, the whole point is nice positions can come from bishop h4, but the problem is black can decide if he wants positions which come from g5. Personally I'd rather play bishop f4
Trompowsky 2020!
Wow stephen really does not like raptor variation lol. I came here to learn more about it ,not to hear how terrible it is 😆 also it is not that bad getting equal position which is very tricky and hard to play as black is pretty clever
Edge Variation: The New Bongcloud
Hi! What engine or program do you use to see the best moves?
He uses lichess so I'm assuming it's the free stockfish

22:49 that's what I wanted to hear
hello , why don't you have queens gambit and english opening play list for learning ?
you are the d4 player and have all of the openings and still dont have the most popular opening?
Tou make The best openig videos.
According to my analysis white can often transpose to a London system up a tempo if black plays Ne4. If black ever retreats the knight to f6 without provoking f3 I think white is just better and this would be my strategy if I played this with white. D5 after Ne4 is not favorable for black and c5 allows white the possibility of getting good endgames. I think Ne4 although it seems principled at first is actually bad for black upon closer inspection. I will look for other moves besides Ne4 from here for black.
Sample lines:
London system
1.d4, Nf6 2.Bf4, d5 3.e3, c5 4.c3, Nc6 white to play. =
Trompowsky
1.d4, Nf6 2.Bg5, Ne4?! 3. Bf4, d5 4.e3, c5 5.Bd3, Nf6 6.c3, Nc6
White to play +=
Exchange Ruy lopez allows white the possibilty of getting good endgames, but it is not unfavourable for black. Scotch game allows white the possibilty of getting good endgames, but it is not unfavourable for black as well.
If black plays c5 after Ne4, Black's dynamic advantages often compensates for his bad structure. For example, on 30:24 11... exf4 does not look good for black. However, he has a more succesful move dxc6, and after 12. Bxe5 Be6 black is going to have a development lead and has enough compensation for a pawn.
Glad I became ur patron! My name is Kapil and yes can u pls answer my question on patreon?
Glad to hear that! I think I just have:D Have a look at the messages there.
I don't really agree with your analysis about the raptor variation. I think it leads to dynamic play that are very complex and sharp and cannot be concluded simply as dubious. For example, after 1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5 c5 3. d5 Ne4 4. h4 (transposing into the raptor). Stockfish at depth 41 (14 NNUE) concludes 0.00. In practice, since you are more familiar with those positions than you opponents, you should have the upper hand. Besides this, great analysis!
