Narcisse is the very definition of a “ Scumbag” played masterfully by criminally underrated actor Geoffrey Wright, I remember him wayyy back in Shaft 2000 as Peoples Hernandez.
Chalky was one of the few characters on that show I never lost respect for. Even Nucky disappointed me on multiple occasions, but Chalky was a real one. I hated seeing Narcisse get the drop on him--and I hate it even more that Michael K. Williams is no longer with us.
Every character on that show was a villain. Including Chalky, although he was probably the best fit as an anti hero, on that show. I kind of felt like nucky eventually got what he deserved by the show’s conclusion.

There is an incredible amount of subtext to the different traits that made Narcisse. First lets look at the name: It implies Narcissism. Narcisse thought highly of himself in a way that depended on the inferiority of "Libians" and other Black people. He used education as a pretext to put himself above. And his description of the vampire? it absolutely was a self reflection... I believe Narcisse had enough self awareness to understand his evil nature. He made sure that he used all other disadvantaged people as a means to his ends... Imprisoning women, murdering those who were no longer useful, creating zombies (heroin being an allegory for such an undertaking). Was Narcisse ultimately a self loathing Black Man? To me he was a villian who embodied so many tropes: the puller of strings, the sociopathology to use and abuse, and the evil doctor who created zombies...
Solid take fam.. I was waiting for Chalky to have his own conflict and own enemy so in a way I feel Narcisse was necasary evil for Chalkys storyline. I think Chalky made as many connections as an uneducated black man could have in the 1920s. Yes he was living in a New Jersey town were Union Army veterans still held considerable power (The Commodore). But it was also at the height of the 2nd Klan (the one that arose in 1915 and first started burning crosses and using pointed hoods) where even public school teachers (Jimmy's teacher) were publicly Klan members. If you rewatch the show, Chalky got along with the Catholic (Irish and Italian) gangsters & the Jewish gangsters (both groups despised by the 2nd Klan), but no one else
At the time both Irish n italian were not considered white. The k wanted mostly protestant anglo saxons. A lot of people think the nazibn k would get along but that doesn't quite fit their plans
I hated that they made Chalky look so incompetent. I dunno, they made Chalky look like an amateur ... Narcisse really just owned Chalky from start to finish. At least that's how I see it.
I loved Jeffrey Williams in this role! Terence Winter did a superb job writing both Chalky & Narcisse. I could always tell when Winter wrote eps with Af Am men on the Sopranos. He didn’t do tropes. The eps that portrayed Af Am men as one dimensional stereotypes were written by Matthew Weiner. And you could see that in the Af Am characters Weiner wrote in Mad Men.
Jeffery Wright is a SUPERB actor! I enjoyed every second of screentime as Dr. Narcisse. So bold, arrogant, and calculating. As much as I loved Chalky, he was no match for the Dr.

Jeffery wright killed it in his role as Dr. Narcisse. The thing is, is that when an actor plays the role of a villain so well, sometimes the audience comes to cast some hate on the actor for doing a good job. The actor who portrayed King Jofferery, on GOT, had this problem.
The thing we have to understand about Chalky was his ability to make relationships coupled with the respect he EARNED from his community made up for any disadvantages he had against Narcisse Teamwork was Chalky's advantage Narcisse was clearly smarter, more ambitious and highly ruthless...but he found a match in Chalky White
Jeffrey Wright has long been one of my favorite actors. He was brilliantly evil as Narcisse. Excellent analysis of how Chalky got outmaneuvered by the slick dishonest Narcisse . Chalky was honest and loyal, a rare commodity in that time.
The big fistfight between Chalky and Purnsley was one of the best fistfights staged in that show. I also liked the one between Eli and the corrupt prohibition agent were Eli strangles him to death.
There is an interesting detail about Narcisse that seems to be overlooked a lot. His educated and sophisticated manner is simply an act. It is a carefully crafted mask he wears to back up his image as a pillar of the Black community. In reality he is actively undermining the well being of many black folks while simultaneously claiming to work to uplift them. In the episode where Chalky tries to kill Narcisse and shoots up his office, Narcisse shows up to the Onyx Club later that night and tries to strong arm Nucky into revealing Chalky's location. After the attempt on his life, he has totally lost his cool and collected manner, which we can now see was just an act all along. He regresses back to using his Trinidadian accent and acting like any other gangster. His sophistication is totally an act he puts on to fool others and also probably himself to some degree. J. Edgar Hoover had him sized up perfectly, "just a peddler and a pimp". Also, how sick is the fact that he murdered Daughter's mother and then adopted the girl only to have some kind of weird relationship with her, and use her sexuality as a grown woman to ensnare his enemies and try to bring them down. That is some sick shit.
The best part of BWE was the black guys and their clothes. They looked like _men._ They had style and dignity. Today's black men dress like toddlers. And not even well-dressed toddlers.
I completely disagree with most of the assessments here. To me, Dr. Narcisse was a dynamic and creative entrepreneur boxed in and defined by the times. From the comments, most of you do not understand how difficult it was for a person of color to operate in those times. He is a dirt bag philanthropic individual that blurs and dancing over the lines of good and evil. Him and Chalky had a lot in common. To me, he needs his own series. Honestly I feel like Narcisse and Rothstein are the two characters that sort of make Boardwalk Empire so memorable and why they're my two least favorite characters in the show. Past the interpersonal drama the show ultimately boils down to being all about two truly awful wretched people... Rothstein in particular pissed me off the most because at the end of the day all the misery he peddles he's largely doing it because he can and so he has a stream of income so he can gamble. Think of all the lives in BE that suffer because of the shit Nucky does in partnership with Rothstein... so that Rothstein can go play dumb ass hands of poker. Chalky and Eddie for me are the only two people (and Richard Harrow) who are living for other people and just generally trying to make the lives of the people around them better. And they each die for people who either don't appreciate it or pointlessly. I hate how miserable Boardwalk Empire is but at the same time I admire and respect what the show managed to do and all the actors where brilliant.
Narcisse realized everyone was expendable, including the Negro League. Nevertheless, he made profound leverage to ensure those that maintained a ruthless commitment to the Negro League were strengthened and rewarded (...his protection, but also the legacy of his NL tenure). His distortions were significantly the most lucid of his contemporaries. Everyone and nobody had value...everything and nothing had value. He was the first to pounce on Nucky after Nucky had made his "pressured" payoff. First among equals?
...talking Chalky...and Harlem...there is a family scene at dinner with Chalkys family when his daughter brings her beau to meet them all. Chalkys complete lack of grace is a statement about him at his most immodest. Chalky greatest flaw was his inability to conceal his flaws....and to personalize everyone as being the cause of such a flawed persona

Yeah, definently not a fan favorite but a great character
Excellent. Promoting well dressed Black men criminals great ! Another brilliant portrayal to have UNIA official pimp and drugs faintly Dubois Narcisse. Love it! Thanks for amplifying.
@@egarvanne Hey man all opinions are welcome here but uhh, you know this is a fictional tv series correct?
I hate this guy
This part of the show was poor writing.
CHALKY was a GANGSTERS, GANGSTER! He was Very Loyal and Very Respectful!! And coming from an Italian-American he would have been a very strong MAFIOSI!! I often wonder who his character was based on??
Chalky actually took care of his people
