This was one of my favorite shows ever made, with great characters and a fantastic weaving of fact and fiction. The final season was decent, but this show could've kept going for years and never lost it's charm for me.
@Barry Allen not true, a lot of it was fiction, made for TV drama. Nucky Johnson not Thompson came from an affluent family in New Jersey, he wasn't Catholic or Irish he was a Methodist, Nucky Johnson, was never connected with a single act of violence let alone a murder, he did make a lot of his money because of prohibition and the sale of liquor, but he also gave back a great amount of that money to the community, after the Volstead act was repealed Me. Johnson also helped open up a lot of alcohol rehabilitation clinics, and did not die on the boardwalk but in his own bed in his 60s. Gyp Rosetti a main character in season 3 was not a real person, and the idea that Arnold rothstein, Charlie Luciano, Meyer lansky, Al Capone or any other Jewish or Italian mobsters where in cahoots with Nucky Johnson is unproven hearsay and television drama and fluff. It was a great show, some of the mafia story lines are true, but for the most part boardwalk empire is an act of fiction based in a time period where you could mix a lot of fact and fiction to tell a great story.

I just started watching Boardwalk Empire for the first time ever and I'm on episode 6 in season one. Its already a masterpiece show in my opinion. The acting, the women on the show are gorgeous especially Kelly MacDonald, the characters, the setting, etc. The scene where Capone, Darmody, and the head Italian guy go meet with the one Italian guy about Greek town territory. They discover that Darmody has a brass knuckle knife on him and soon as they get ready to leave, the front desk girl hands them their coats back and Darmody and Capone takes all of those mafia guys out. That whole sequence of scenes were so beautifully done.
It was a knife Jimmy had in his boot that he saved from the war but it had a handle that went around the fingers. The show just keeps getting better and better and Steve Buscemi's portrayal of Nucky Thompson is one of if not the best lead roles in a crime drama, even more so than James Gandolfini's portrayal of Tony Soprano. The show has some of the best writers, a great cast, and it's the only TV series that really does a good job of covering the Prohibition-era. Even the smaller details like the way the boardwalk looks and the suits that they wear make it look that much more authentic.

Thank you for discussing this series. I hope you get to watch more episodes, because I like this series better than "The Sopranos." "The Sopranos" is by far one of the greatest series ever produced, but being a big history buff, I just love "Boardwalk Empire." And I'll argue that this was Steve Buscemi's best work, which is saying something considering his incredible career. This series is so well cast, so well written, so well acted, produced, and shot. It really puts you in the time period, and I've watched it twice. I even love the opening theme song. Plus, it doesn't pull any punches about the ugly side of prohibition and the rise of Cosa Nostra, along with the corruption of politicians and some wealthy individuals of the time. It has compelling characters. I think Jimmy Darmody is probably one of the most tragic characters of the whole series. I feel bad for him, but then I also hate him. He has been through so much serving in the Army during The Great War (World War I), but his whole origin is tragic and mired with sickness. Great serires. I could go on and on about it. Thanks for what you do. Much respect.
This was such a great review. I very much admired how you mentioned Afrian-Americans moving up to Atlantic City and basically trying to start a life. Wish this part of history was added in the first episode of Boardwalk Empire
Great video, FYI though - 'Consumption' is actually an old term for Tuberculosis 'TB', that's what Nucky says his wife died of. Not many people know that but I know it as i'm Irish born and my Great Grandmother and a few of her siblings died of it in the early 20th century so grew up hearing my family talk about all the old deaths from 'Consumption'.
The Volstead Act was actually enforced-not by the FBI-but by the Treasury Department (the Secret Service was also a part of the Treasury Department from its inception until shortly after 9/11 ca. 2003). Van Alden and the other prohibition agents investigating Nucky also commandeered/set up HQ in a post office because it was the only federal building in the area.
You speak so much truth Michael...the kids...young people...who watch these movies and are attracted by the glamour and the money and the women never embrace the end. It NEVER ends well for them. It's ended well for you but why? Because you managed to get away from that life...you found God! But even for you there has been that terrible loss of family...your brother and sister...your Mom and Dad...THAT family suffered tremendously. You're so generous to share that with us and all those who are tempted by the lure of that life. When I was young...just a kid of 13...I was enchanted with that life in Providence, RI. I interacted with Raymond Patriarca and he took a liking to me as a kid but my Mom and Grandmother who knew what he was were thankfully able to pull me away from that life. All I saw was how everyone feared and respected him and to a young boy it seemed very cool in 1970. But it didn't end well for him...or his son who tried to follow him. Now I still enjoy the movies and the stories...but just as entertainment...and I'm so blessed that I never took that path that might have been there for me. You are doing God's work Michael.
thanx, Mike .this is one of my favorite series ever! and I too loved the sets and how they nailed the period like a hammer on a nail. ironically, it had a rock theme song. but the content was strictly 1919, and into the 20's.
Michael, dying of "consumption" is reffering to turburculosis, not alcohol poisening, (which cause cirrosis eventually) very prevelent in those days & before (see Doc Holliday).
-When he said his wife died of consumption, that means tuberculosis. -Also, it’s pronounced James (darm-a-dee). -And there is no one named Kelly in the show.
@@TheBaBaTV but when you're doing content for RUclips and reviewing things like that when youre able to edit these mistakes shouldn't be in there. Darmody isnt hard to pronounce lol. Somebody on his team should've told him.
Mike's retelling of the Boardwalk Empire/Atlantic City story is do close to the stories I tell as a historian/tour guide at The Gangster Museum of America in Hot Springs AR. Wide open town from 1927-1967 and all the big name Gangsters came here. No heat. No hassle.
Armand Assante is a brilliant and convincing actor. loved him with Denzel Johnsonton is American gangster and Gotti but everything he's ever played is great , his dialogue , his manner of speaking is an absolute sale !
Hey Michael I can tell by the way you talk about people and for instance Henry Hill God rest his soul. You talk about them with respect every single time. You never talk down or sling mud in any way. You really are a stand-up guy and it's amazing how you turn your life around. God bless you.
One of the good things about your delivery is that you describe movies in the present tense instead of the past. May not seem like a big thing but I like it and it's the right way
I wish Michael would watch first 2 seasons of HBOs series "Oz". Italian mobsters play huge part in that, I'd love to knw his opinion on how realistic that show actually is based on his own life in prison.
I'm in recovery and I agree with you 100%. Once I know the truth about myself, it is my responsibility. Love recovery. Oh yeah, women's rights and shelters for women and CHILDREN.
"And it's actually two midgets fighting in the ring. I never saw that before. Anyway, they were two midgets." Random digression that tickled me to no end.
This presentation made me wish, for the first time in years, that I had tv at home...not going to, but if I had had it, I would have enjoyed this series, basing that idea on Michael's talk. I read comments to an extent too, and appreciate all remarks on acting skills, character and atmosphere of the show. Those carping about pronunciation of names added less than nothing to the discussion, a waste of time encountering them. I also don't care whether Michael watched every episode, or only enough to be able to present this to those who asked for a review. It satisfied so many fans of the series and brought back memories for them. So, the job well done. About the small stuff that no one should sweat anyway: Pronunciation! My dad was first generation Italian-American, grew up in an essentially Italian (ethnicity) village in Wisconsin, and he was never able to say the 'th' sound. "Happy birt-day!" Imagine had we pouted and said Dad ought to make an effort to say it right. Ingratitude! And when a server at a restaurant told us they offered "Eye-talian bread", we'd just have a tickled laugh, not go all moody over the ignorance of Irish (ethnicity) servers. Please grow up, and learn to prioritize, sound police. Everyone knew who was meant. NO disrespect was intended, clearly, and no offense could be taken by anyone not too tightly wrapped. Too tightly. Thanks, Michael! And Michael, I liked "Find Me Guilty", too. Would love to hear your take on it.
I saw this earlier and really enjoyed it Michael. Weird I sent back to rewatch and it was blocked. Guess copy rights or something. Anyway, Armand Asanti, Chazz Palmeteri, and cast from the Sopranos? 🔥🔥🔥 Keeps getting better. This is my favorite RUclips channel 👍
I appreciate that you are part of the body of christ, people dont realize that we are all the body of christ. We we are all one, like fingers on a hand. Keep up the good fight, friend.
In Chicago, where I grew up, there was a mayor that 'served' the city through part of the 1920's. When Michael talks about the corrupt politicians, the first name that comes to my mind is Mayor 'Big Bill' Thompson. The Roaring Twenties roared a little louder with Big Bill in charge. At one point, he threatened to fire any cop that arrested a citizen for "exercising his right" to have a drink. The 20's fascinate me. My mother (Rest In Peace) was born in 1921. She remembered some of the mid to late 20's and told me a few stories that gave me a ground level view of that crazy time. She also told me about the subsequent depression which was the price they all paid for the total abandonment of prudence and caution during the previous decade.

I love the way this guy talks. He reminds me of my grandfather like jeez stop dropping so much knowledge on me in so little time
Armand Assante did a few mob roles. I enjoy everyone of them. Chazz, that's gonna be good too.
Consumption is what they used to call tuberculosis. His wife died of tuberculosis not alcohol consumption.
Exactly, thanks for bringing that up. Most people aren't aware of that. Nucky also said him and Eli's sister died of TB also
I’ve heard him say this same thing on another video talking about someone else.
12:35 "LOL!" Consumption" is not consumption of alcohol but rather anther name for Tuberculosis.
Boardwalk Empire was great
BORADWALK EMPIRE SEASON 3 BY FAR THE BEST MOB SHOW EVER MADE
GYP character was GREAT!!!!
I watch this show in it’s entirety , once a year . One of my favourites
Hey Michael!! 2X Monday! 👏 God Bless from The Bronx 👊🙏🇺🇸
Would love Michael to do a sit down with British actor Stephen Graham who played Capone in Boardwalk Empire and was in The Irishman
Stephen Graham is amazing he Reminds me of Pesci sometimes the mob genre had a good Future with him
God Bless you Bro, i'm from an Family like you. Now i'm in the Way of the Angles, not the Dämons. God is with us. Long Life Mr. Francese
This series was amazing. By far the best depiction of organized crime and the gangster genre ever made.
That period piece is my favorite show to ever be on television. Thank you
thanx, Mike .this is one of my favorite series ever! and I too loved the sets and how they nailed the period like a hammer on a nail. ironically, it had a rock theme song. but the content was strictly 1919, and into the 20's.
Michael, dying of "consumption" is reffering to turburculosis, not alcohol poisening, (which cause cirrosis eventually) very prevelent in those days & before (see Doc Holliday).
Please Do THE WIRE. BOARDWALK IS A CLASSIC SERIES. ONE OF THE BEST.
you mean him read the wiki for the wire, than say hes ognna do a review of the whole show than never come back? Yeah, hes got you
I don’t know if he’ll do the wire it’s mostly from the police’s perspective specifically Baltimore and he’s from New York but yeah that would be cool
Boardwalk Empire and The Wire are the greatest T.V. shows hands down.
Agree. Chalky and Omar 2 of the best characters ever.
-When he said his wife died of consumption, that means tuberculosis. -Also, it’s pronounced James (darm-a-dee).
-And there is no one named Kelly in the show.
Thank you - I was about to post the same thing. Consumption = TB
@@bbjeppson I heard darmondie and I was like huh? But since its Michael we will forgive.
Kelly MacDonald is the actress who plays Margaret’s real name.
@@thisblackgirlslife she was also in "No Country for old men" and "Trainspotting"
I've been suggesting this for months Michael. I'm glad you finally listened to us.
I loved this series its so well written and cast perfect. Such amazing acting in this Steve Graham as Capone cmon its killer
Thankyou for reviewing this show Mr Franzese. This is a very underrated show it's one of my personal favourites. Thankyou.
I think his name is pronounced Nucky instead of Nookie! 😂 great show though!
He pronounces it the same way the butler does! 🤣 And I think he thinks Darmody is Italian so he calls him 'Darmonde'.
Who the fuck is Nookie and Del Monte? What show was he watching?
it seems he mis pronounces a few names lmao
@@BostonsF1nest He obviously did not watch a single second of Boardwalk lol
@@tamdam yea... that’s how I feel
Hey Michael I can tell by the way you talk about people and for instance Henry Hill God rest his soul. You talk about them with respect every single time. You never talk down or sling mud in any way. You really are a stand-up guy and it's amazing how you turn your life around. God bless you.
Boardwalk is actually one of the Best most factual yet underrated shows ever made. If you watch carefully the details of everything is amazing!
It wasnt all that factual
One of the good things about your delivery is that you describe movies in the present tense instead of the past. May not seem like a big thing but I like it and it's the right way
This show was definitely much more Cruel and Brutal than The Sopranos.
People were more violent back in the days
Joke Dok Oh most definitely, life was much crueler back then too. All these idiots rioting about injustice have no idea how good we have it nowadays.
@@jackthomas6952 yeah. Remind them about great depression, when the whole county suffered, and how bad it was on the streets
Joke Dok Oh definitely and if you mouthed off to the Police about your rights.....watch out.
@@jackthomas6952 Like Michael's former boss?
Mr. Franzeze, you do some great work on all of this. Always hard to stop listening in.
I wish Michael would watch first 2 seasons of HBOs series "Oz". Italian mobsters play huge part in that, I'd love to knw his opinion on how realistic that show actually is based on his own life in prison.
@Bruce Michael i like that show but it was a bit cartoonish
I'm in recovery and I agree with you 100%. Once I know the truth about myself, it is my responsibility. Love recovery.
Oh yeah, women's rights and shelters for women and CHILDREN.

"And it's actually two midgets fighting in the ring. I never saw that before. Anyway, they were two midgets."
Random digression that tickled me to no end.
‘It was actually 2 midgets fighting, I’ve never seen that before!’ Lmao
Glad to see Michael can still be surprised!
Vincent Piazza was the best Lucky Luciano EVER!!! He did EXCELLENT in that role and by the final season he was Boss of all Bosses! 🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Boardwalk Empire might be the best overall TV series ever!
I've been waiting for Michael to do Boardwalk Empire!
I already know this about to be a great one. Hope you had a awesome day as well Mr. Franzese
About the small stuff that no one should sweat anyway:
Pronunciation!
Boardwalk empire should have gone on another 2 seasons its a great TV series
my favorite show. Steve Buscemi's great one of his finest best Role.
I'm glad HBO let this go back up. I used to love Boardwalk Empire.
Michael thank you very much for all your comments.and different story.i like it so much
I saw this earlier and really enjoyed it Michael. Weird I sent back to rewatch and it was blocked. Guess copy rights or something. Anyway, Armand Asanti, Chazz Palmeteri, and cast from the Sopranos? 🔥🔥🔥 Keeps getting better. This is my favorite RUclips channel 👍
I loved the way that Nookie would codeswitch during meetings and speeches.
I find it both hilarious and endearing how Michael is constantly botching names of characters 🤣
