The last-second heroics in the Cowboys vs. Giants' 2015 Sunday Night opener deserve a deep rewind

  • This game could’ve broken wide open in either direction. Each team has made its share of mistakes, but never enough to kill hope in this moment. For Dallas, the hope is they’ve finally assembled a team that’s complete enough to compete when it matters most. With New York, if they hang on here, it can be the start they need to find stability.
And for 9 and 82, tonight marks their 13th year together, it’s the first step towards changing their legacies, and it’s a chance to maybe do their thing once again. Welcome to a moment in history.

This drive just felt different, I remember it like yesterday. For years before, as a Cowboys fan, you didn’t always know how the game would end. Romo wasn’t as bad in the clutch as the narrative around him suggested, but he did have some high profile mistakes.
But this drive, you could just tell they were going to win. Romo looked honestly as comfortable & confident as he ever had.
I really think he was gonna hit another level at this point. That line was just too good for him not to. Sucks his career ended after the next game. Him with rookie Zeke woulda been incredible. Still think they shoulda went to him & benched Dak that year.

In spite of Romo’s (entirely unfair) reputation as a “choker”, I always felt safe with the ball in his hands at the end of the game. Off the top of my head, I can only think of three games that ended with a Romo int: 2007 NFC divisional (desperation throw), 2011 vs Jets (legit bad throw), 2013 vs Broncos (got stepped on by his O-Line). And yet, you’d think every Cowboys loss was caused single-handedly by a Romo pick six the way the haters talked about him.
The truth is Romo saved the cowboys so many times that he effectively made those 8-8 teams into contenders all by himself. The 2015 comeback against the Giants was yet another signature moment from a great QB, and it was poetic that it came on a bobbled snap, the same thing that started all the choker talk in 2006. Everything had come full circle, this was the year.
As it turned out, it was his last hurrah... I still think about what 2015 and 2016 could’ve been with Romo at the helm. Those teams were tailor-made for him, made to build off the success of 2014. Add a super bowl ring to the team records he holds, and he’d easily be in the conversation as the greatest Cowboys QB of all time. From an undrafted kid that no one wanted to a World Champion. It could’ve happened. Sigh…

I miss Romo so much, he was and always will be my favorite player. He took so much hate from everyone including Cowboys fans when he was literally the only reason the Cowboys were decent or good. He carried the Cowboys on his back for years. People love to say he was a choke artist yet obviously never watched all the games he won in clutch fashion just like this one. From 2006-2014 (years Romo was mostly healthy and played) he had more game winning drives than Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, and Big Ben. He also had some of the absolute worst defenses in NFL history as well as terrible offensive lines (which is why they finally drafted him one and the Cowboys were able to make a run in 2014). If you gave Romo the Cowboys teams Dak has had during his career, Romo would probably have a Superbowl ring (especially with the defense the Cowboys have now). He made mediocre or bad receivers look good and was one of the best scramblers ever. Romo was like a magician, I’ll never forget that spin move on prime JJ Watt ending in a TD bomb. Dude was running for his life so many years he would make plays out of nothing. Romo deserved better and in my opinion is the best QB in DAL history.

Ultimately this moment didn't culminate into anything. Romo got hurt the next game, the cowboys stumbled to a 4-12 record, drafted Ezekiel Elliot in the first round, and Dak Prescott in the fourth. Romo got hurt again in the preseason and Dak hasn't let go of the reigns yet. Since 2015 the Cowboys have had just 1 losing season under Dak Prescott, yet no divisional round wins

I’d love to see a rewind of the 2021 playoff game between the Cowboys and the 49ers. It’s a historic rivalry with each team knocking the other out of the playoffs multiple times over the years, and that game came down to the final Cowboys drive, and time running out before Dak could take a shot at the end zone. So chaotic and unexpected, I’d love to hear your commentary on it.

I think Manziel to Dallas would have been a good idea - Johnny could have sat behind Tony Romo one or two seasons and matured a little. Had the spotlight off of him. But as an Eagles fan, I'm glad it worked out the way it did.

This game and this season hurts so much as a Cowboys fan. If only Romo stayed healthy this season. I think the team could have honestly had another good year and potentially finally broken through and won in the divisional round. But it wasn't meant to be and Tony got hurt against the Eagles very soon after this game. And then we were subjected to Brandon Weeden and Matt Cassell for the majority of the rest of the season. Yuck.

Turns out Zack Martin was the right pick, though. Even if Manziel had done better in Dallas, it'd be hard for him to beat Zack Martin, who has made All-Pro 8 out of 9 years in the NFL, 6 of them First Team. That's a home run pick even if it were #1 overall - at #16, it's one of the best draft selections ever made.
