As a Giants fan, that 49ers team was unbelievably good. I still say that that was the best team that year and one of the best 49ers teams ever. We were lucky that Eli was carrying the Giants team on his back that year.
Not even a Niners fan but man every time I see that Alex Smith TD run I can’t keep my eyes off Joe Staley absolutely flying to make the block. Top TOP tackle in NFL history. Man Harbaugh and Smith deserved more that year
This is my all time favorite game. It managed to showcase both the how great the offense and defense could be yet was still tight and showed how high level the competition was. My favorite moment was Justin Smith tackling Brees and the lineman trying to block him at the same time. Its got a special place in my memory.
33 year old myself. Having only heard of the Montana and Dwight 3rd down miracle against the cowboys, I couldn’t help but feel special being able to witness my own memory of another 49er miracle on a 3rd down last second feat.
That era of Saints football was such a wasted era. It taught the rest of the league a huge lesson: When you have a franchise QB, you can’t just skip years.

As a 49ers fan, this game absolutely made me cry. I was 17 when this game happened, so I could tell you all about Tim Rattay, Ken Dorsey, Nate Clements, etc., This game was strong vindication for Alex even deciding to come back in 2011 and for all the crap he endured for the six years prior. Edit: I wish you talked about Vernon getting kicked out of the game in 2008 against Seattle. Vernon had been a largely uninspiring bust, but Mike Singletary kicking Vernon out not only made a good sound bite, but it made Vernon grow up and he went to the Pro Bowl in 2009.

When I think about those 2000-2010s niners team, all that comes to mind is those red, black & gold unis (one of my favorites) two great LBs that never won a championship unfortunately, T.O. leaving, Vernon Davis leaving, mediocre receivers, and losing. Glad I was too young to watch the team during that era

As a life long 49ers fan this video brings tears of joy to eyes and a warmth in my heart. It was sad as hell to go down to the Giants the way we did the following week in the NFC Championship game but the memories of this game still have a special place in 49ers lore and the hearts of 49ers fans.
It really was. Edge of my seat the entire game. Every play I could hear my neighbors reactions too. I lived in SF at the time and the city was electrified during that game!
I'm sad you didn't show VD going off the field crying after being part of the infamous Mike Singletary post game interview. He matured so much under Harbaugh. One of the greatest TEs and criminally underrated historically.
idk who you talk sports with but Vernon Davis aint criminally underrated by anybody who knows ball He might not have had the physical gifts that Gronk and Tony Gonzalez had but between Tonys peak and Gronks peak it was always Davis and Gates battling for best TE in league...and id argue it was Davis that ushered in the Tight End being essentially a tall fast 3rd reciever and less of a blocker/just work the across short middle and flats
also yes Davis bawling his eyes out and collapsing into Harbaughs bear hug as he comes off field with the game winning ball is one of the most wholesome NFL moments
Was just telling my younger brother last night about how underrated Alex Smith was, and then this popped up today. It’s like you have a portal straight into my mind sometimes SB.

The stadium absolutely erupted in jubilation! One of the greatest experiences of my life!
After being an absolutely spoiled 49ers fan during the 80's and 90's (I think we made the playoffs 18 out of 20 years) this was when we started playing 49er football again and it felt right.. Good memories and great video Secret Base 👏🏻
I grew watching the niners from 95-00. Steve Young, to this day, is my favorite NFL player of all time w/o a doubt. But I don't remember watching any of the playoff games (still a toddler when they won the super bowl). From 01 - 10, I didn't watch a single niners game as I was too involved with being a kid & teenager elsewhere. The 2011-2012 season marked the year I got back into 49ers football and this moment sealed the deal for me that I was gonna be die hard fan season in & season out. I remember where I was, the emotions I felt, and especially how exciting it was to spectate such an awesome moment in sports history. I feel this is an underrated moment that doesn't get its due recognition these days, so it was a pleasant surprise to see you guys do a Rewinder on it. Thank you for letting me relive a "Welcome to a moment in history"
This game was on my birthday in 2011, I was new to watching football and didn’t understand a whole lot especially given that the 49ers were a non factor for most of my life up to that point, this game was my introduction to the team that every man in my family is a proud fan of and I, an 11 year old at the time, didn’t really understand why because I had never heard of them before. Then on my birthday in 2011 my dad turned on this game and i don’t remember much outside of the 4th quarter, but I remember my dad happily screaming at the top of his lungs like a little kid again. Ever since then i’ve been a 49ers fan.
I remember my brother and I were the only 49ers fan watching the game with a group of friends. That was probably the first time we hugged each other out of excitement and both had teary eyes.
That shootout at the end was so crazy, was jumping up and down with my older brother when Varnon caught that ball! So many years of disappointment erased just like that!
As a Saints fan, this was one of the most crushing moments for me. '06 loss to the Bears. '09 Super Bowl Win '10 loss to the Seahawks '11 loss to the 49ers '17 loss to the Vikings '18 loss to the Rams Those are the ones that hurt the most.
I was there in-person for the first ever Harbaugh era game against Seattle on 9-11-11. Ted Ginn was on fire that day, and Candlestick was buzzing! It was my first ever NFL game as well. So much fun!
The Catch II is one of my earliest, if not first, football memories. Steve Young was my idol. Fun fact - he ran for a 49 yard TD the day I was born against the Vikings, the famous one where he fell into the end zone. Anyway - I can so vividly remember this moment in real time as an adult. I was so profoundly happy for both Alex Smith and Vernon Davis, as it felt like a culmination of years of personal and professional growth for them both. Seeing VD break down and cry to the sideline, like TO did before him, was just such a humanizing moment. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
I'll never forget this game! I was privileged to watch this live! I was sitting in the first row of that end zone when the niners scored the game winning TD!
Will! You’re a hockey guy! You should cover the 2011 Canucks-Blackhawks Game 7! It’s an incredible ending to a great series and rivalry with so many storylines and different emotional through-lines that is perfect for Rewinder.
As a 9er this was one of my favorite season. Regardless what happened against the Giants this run was memorable and this game specifically is one that should be added to the 9er archives
Have been waiting so long for this rewind! This was my first post season game I ever got to watch of the 49ers and will probably forever be my favorite postseason game.
I think most Niners fans appreciate the grit of Alex Smith. With regards to that lockout, Smith was doing all of that while not under contract. He could have gotten hurt and the Niners would have been under no obligation to re-sign him. Everyone was singing Brees’s praises for doing the exact same thing, but no one outside of the faithful did the same for Alex. He got booed, benched, and blamed his first few years and handled it all like a champ.
I know we went to the Super Bowl the next year, but that 2011 season may have been more special with how quickly things turned around for Smith and the franchise as a whole
Great work secret base, rewinders made me enjoy watchinng american football, even if I don't follow (or understand entirely) the sport itself. i dont know if you'll ever see this, but I was hoping that you would do more rewinders on the other football (aka, soccer), my suggestion would be the 2005 champion's League finals, the miracle of istanbul (Liverpool Fan 😅). anyway, thanks again, keep up the good work
1:43 "Smith outlasted that GM" Well, that GM had a really bad drinking problem. He is seen in the NFL as one of the est talent scouts/evaluators in NFL history and helped build the Seahawks super team after leaving the 49ers that went to two super bowls, but was fired again because of his drinking problems. He then joined Mike Shanhan and helped find a lot of talent to help Washington make the playoffs before... you guessed it, losing his job because of his drinking problems. Now he just makes a bunch of money as a consultant to many teams with his agency and his hard work at evaluating talent in upcoming drafts, the free agent market and guys going under the radar on practice squads. Don't act like he was a bad GM, he might be one of the best to have ever done it.
Good context about Scot McCloughan. Like you said, he had his fingerprints all over those resurgent Niners teams, the best Seahawks teams in their history, and some talented Washington teams. The man knew how to find talented players.
I honestly love your rewind videos, so thank you. The story of South Africa winning the 1995 Rugby World Cup deserves to be told in the way only you wonderful folks can. Seriously it's a beautiful story, an amazing game and a moment unparalleled in sports history.
First 49ers fan where I remember the playoff game in my lifetime, I just started college. Won’t lie to you guys, I cried just like Vernon lol. Absolute rollercoaster of a game and still my all time favorite 49ers game
I always thought that if we made the SB that year we were winning for sure. We were loaded. That Kyle Williams fumble led to me crying on a street corner outside of the bar i watched the game at with my gf at the time (now wife) consoling me haha
Best team to never play in a super bowl. That d would obliterate 98 vikings and 2009 Favre vikings. I think one of the best teams to not win a super bowl period. All time defense. Scary for every team . And the offense ran so well with gore. Ugh. Sad memories
That was one of the most incredible days of my life, i went to my friend bday party who were twins for a watch party, every emotion was experienced that game, we were hold our breath on that and completely lost our minds when Davis made the catch, it still gives me goosebumps
This may seem like a super obscure suggestion for a Rewinder, but 2012 Duke vs. UNC....football 👀 The Jamison Crowder game winning TD catch clinched bowl eligibility for Duke and was symbolic of the complete resurrection of a football program under the guidance of David Cutcliffe (coached both Peyton and Eli Manning). And the fact this happened in a rivalry game makes it all the sweeter
Incredible content as always. Idea for a future Rewinder: Duke vs. Kentucky, 1992 Elite Eight (The Laettner Shot) Duke’s quest for back to back titles, Kentucky’s journey to return to glory following scandal.
Still watching, but it feels like you glossed over the important part where the home fans were chanting "We want Carr!" on SNF or MNF (whichever it was) in 2010, and you only call it "Switched from boos to cheers" Bro, that was a historic moment. Never seen anything like it before or after in my life on TV.
Heart breaking year. We could have won that Super Bowl. It felt like from 2011-2013 we had that championship magic but we same up just short every time
One thing that is not emphasized enough is that drafting Alex Smith over Aaron Rodgers was totally defensible at the time. After Smith was picked, 23 teams passed on Rodgers. Smith joined a franchise that was in disarray…he hardly stood a chance. But he has this golden moment. I was so happy for him.
Rodgers went to Berkeley he’s a Northern California kid everyone wanted the 49ers to draft him that was the hype for months leading up to the draft Bay Area people already knew rodgers potential not many 49ers fans knew much about Alex smith from Utah….and no other qbs came off the board In between Alex and rodgers so those 23 teams weren’t looking for a qb
I was at this game! It was awesome. My best memories of the parking lot at candlestick as a Niners fan. NO fans getting heckled until an entire Mardi Gras parade with horn players marched through the parking lot. It was amazing.
I remember this game like it happened a few minutes ago i cry like a baby watching my niners barely win games with mike singletary to going to the NFC championship and superbowl with jim i never got to see niners glory days im 25 but glad i got to witness so great moments like these tho
I understand why it was glossed over, but a big part of this game was Bountygate. The Saints defense actively tried to injure Smith, Gore, and Davis at the behest of their DC. It was this game that started the investigations that led to major suspensions and one of the biggest stains of modern football.
They keep deleting commens mentioning this and pretending like the is nothing to see here. The most poetic thing is that it was the 49ers defense that cleanly put the whooping on the Saints. The "Fumble" they gloss over in talking about the game? Helmet ot helmet by Donte Whitner vs the runner. Justin Smith sacking Brees by pushing his LT into him and taking him down with one hand and a linemen between them? The WHOOPING Bowman, Willis nad Goldson put on the Saints receivers. Greg Williams was asking who wanted to be more physical and offered a bounty, but it was the 49ers who brought the Madden 2005 hit stick.
This is one of my favorite games of all time.... As a 49er fan the 2011 season was special for for me as a 49er fan and because that the 49ers were just a bad team they were awful.. so awful that they sent records on offense that no other offense would want to have and we were considered having the worst offense ever in the defense was decent but there were always on the field... I was always a fan of Alex Smith and I I wanted him to be very successful and between 2005 to 2010 we had Mike Nolan and Mike secondary as head coaches who both criticize Alex Smith publicly and he had seven different offensive coordinators.... I still remember that infamous Sunday night game against the Philadelphia eagles when we were losing really bad and the crowd was saying we want car... Meaning they wanted the backup quarterback David Carr.. And when Michael cemetery got fired after the 2010 season he said that to the media you have to have a quarterback... Alex Smith never pointed fingers never criticized anyone and you took a lot of criticized from the media and the 49er fans and anybody in his position because his contract was up after the 2010 season.. people saying that he was a bust and he's just be a backup somewhere else and get a fresh start but here comes Jim Harbaugh who convinces Alex Smith to stay... He knew that he couldn't find a quarterback right away so why not have Alex Smith start in San Francisco rather than be a backup somewhere else.. Alex Smith was never the same again and he played very well and I really wanted him Frank Gore Vernon Davis and Patrick Willis to really get super bowl ring because it took a lot of years to finally get it and winning season.... If Kyle Williams didn't fumble one of those two turnovers in the NFC championship game I believe we would have won and beaten the Patriots....
Finally an original concept in the uber overdone world of football talking heads. All of the history and context is magnitudes better than all the rest of the sports screamers and masters of the obvious repeating each others uninspired scripts. The old style video/VCR font is also clever. Kudos to you sir for not following the standard RUclips formula for crap I appreciate it.
Thank you for making this video. I remember watching this game and the first thing I told my brother was “The catch 3”. I grew up a Niners fan. I hope we win this year’s super bowl.
Of course, Ted Ginn Jr. would've been on the field for that play if it wasn't for the Saints Bountygate. It hurt the Niners big time the next week without their normal kick returner, maybe the worst Niners loss I've ever had to experience.
They keep deleting references to Bounty Gate. I know two of mine were removed as well as ones I have replied to. Wonder if yours will be removed as well.
Not a Niners fan ut they have had some of my favorite players... Alex Smith was one of the Ultimate QB Pro/Game Managers. I'll never forget what he was able to do in Washington before the horrific knee injury. The Saints are similar with Brees and the way they got pushed to the SB! Shoutout to DC's own Vernon Davis!
Saints have a tendency to start High Risk, High reward safeties who will perform at a decent level all season but then blow coverage or straight up gimp themselves on crucial plays. Sharper, Williams, Harper, etc. All have been the cornerstone of disastrous defeats.
Goddamn this brought back a core memory. I remember standing behind my living room couch with my dad sitting down, nervously pacing the last two minutes. The catch happens, I yelled loud enough to scare our dog sleeping by the window.
One of the greatest playoff games. Alex Smith, Frank Gore, and Vernon Davis all had theur best game Its a shame next week the defense dropped two interceptions and kyle williams muffed two punts. They shoukd have gone to the Superbowl
The loss the next week vs Giants due to punt returns was heartbreaking. I felt so bad for Alex Smith. This was his highlight game.

The Harbaugh days short but exciting! What’s crazy is he had the same roster as the year before! Harbaugh is the IT factor!
The greatest game I have ever witnessed in my life.
As a 49ers fan, watching this live, from overseas, it was a great day. I still remember that day's late lunch tasting so dam good.
1991 world series deserves a deep rewind.
I was at this game…it still stands out as one of the best games I have ever attended
I was at the Giants game the following week. What a heartbreaker.
This was the game that got me hooked on football. Never forget this one
Huge baseball fan not much of a football fan but I have to say your format and presentation are top shelf and actually have me enjoying football vids.
That Kyle Williams fumble the next week in OT was devastating. Niners would have beaten that Pats team.
*Fumbles
As a niners fan, this video is everything I’ve ever wanted from your channel :)
just got this reccomended after todays div round with the packers.....video seems to stay true
This may seem like a super obscure suggestion for a Rewinder, but 2012 Duke vs. UNC....football 👀
The Jamison Crowder game winning TD catch clinched bowl eligibility for Duke and was symbolic of the complete resurrection of a football program under the guidance of David Cutcliffe (coached both Peyton and Eli Manning). And the fact this happened in a rivalry game makes it all the sweeter
The first playoff game in 9 years, after so many dark years. The greatest playoff game I’ve ever seen
Incredible content as always. Idea for a future Rewinder:
Duke vs. Kentucky, 1992 Elite Eight (The Laettner Shot)
Duke’s quest for back to back titles, Kentucky’s journey to return to glory following scandal.
I remember candlestick chanting for freeking Cody Pickett at one point. I think Smiths rookie year. Cody Pickett!!!
Heart breaking year. We could have won that Super Bowl. It felt like from 2011-2013 we had that championship magic but we same up just short every time
We win in 12 with Alex smith as qb.we win in 2013 if refs dont fix it. 2011, Kyle F -in williams
I was at that saints game! Was absolutely nuts I was only 12 absolutely electric
@@ChrissyCruz925Teams generally draft the best players available, then fill needs with free agency.
4:08 that defense was more than good, they were setting NFL records for run defense going back to the 1940s.
Thank you!!!
As a Saints fan this was a painful ending to a wonderful game.
FTS
I miss Candlestick so much
It hurts me so much as a 49ers to see how bad they were in the 2000 in beyond 😢😢😢
Goosebumps watching that catch. I remember being at my best friend's house and we went absolutely insane.
I know I’m gonna get some get information while getting sleep tonight! Thank you SB We love you ❤
Great video bro. Loved the storytelling. Brings it all back!
I cried tears of joy during this game and only to cry tears of sadness during the NFC championship loss the following week.
That the niners missed the playoffs for a decade that recently is unreal to think about
Secret Base jinxing the niners before the game this weekend lets gooooo
The radio call of the play would have been a nice touch to this video. Great upload!
This game had me genuinely distraught! Thanks Secret base!
As a born and raised Niner fan this is the game that sealed Alex Smith for me and got me to ride for him even when he left. I’ll never forget this.
That was my first time going to a home Niners game. It was so amazing to see that win at the Stick!
I was at this game, and it was probably the greatest sporting event I've ever been to
Brandon aiyuks catch in the 2024 NFC championship game is the catch 4.
Underated game as this year both TE's were going crazy! Before gronk
I am writing this here now as a placeholder for when Brock Purdy eventually throws "The Catch IV" to George Kittle or Deebo Samuel. Mark my words.
This was a great game. Near the end I didn't care who won because it was so epic.
Kansas vs Memphis. Mario's Miracle deserves a Deep Rewind. 2008 National Championship.
I was at that game at candlestick against the saints. Felt like the superbowl. One of the best experiences to witness with my son
This game kicked off my mega-fandom for the Niners that lasts until this day
What an amazing game this was to watch with the faithful niner fans who had suffered through some pretty terrible years.
That was the first football game I ever watched with my dad, and I have watched every Niners since then
Thank you for making this video. I remember watching this game and the first thing I told my brother was “The catch 3”. I grew up a Niners fan. I hope we win this year’s super bowl.
I was in tears when this happened. I'll never forget it.
Never understood why this game isn’t more famous. It was one of the craziest final sequences I’ve ever seen
He injured himself in that game had nothing to do with bounty gate.
Love your channel. Nice work!
Speaking about the 49ers, u guys should make a vid on how good purdy was this year from adjusted net yards per pass attempt
One of the greatest playoff games.
Alex Smith, Frank Gore, and Vernon Davis all had theur best game
Its a shame next week the defense dropped two interceptions and kyle williams muffed two punts. They shoukd have gone to the Superbowl
As a pats fan I was waiting on the 49ers😂
Jim harbaugh took this team to another level
one of the best sporting events I have ever witnessed. That 4th qrtr was unreal
Cant wait for first Lions playoff win in 30 years rewind! Would be awesome
