The dramatic, controversial Rams-Saints 2018 NFC Championship requires a deep rewind

  • High drama. Higher controversy. High...est pressure? The 2018 NFC Championship between the Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints had more than anyone bargained for.
    It's remembered for a single play, but that play isn't even what decided the game. There was still plenty of time for each team's fate to swing any which way. If you're a Saints fan reading this, you probably couldn't care less, but it's all worth remembering exactly how things broke the way they did. What was on the line? What was everyone in the Superdome feeling? What did this game mean for a Rams team looking for their identity? For that, we need to rewind.

    Bad calls are part of the game and you can often just write it off to one ref calling it wrong. But that PI was so egregious and at least two or three refs had eyes on it, that it was unbelievable. I'm not even a Saints fan and that one felt a little sickening.

    • @andrewmeyer4124
      @andrewmeyer4124 2 года назад +68

      For me, what makes that no call so bad is that most bad calls are because of judgment calls that are written in a vague way, so the issue is inconsistent officiating between games. However, that was the most textbook and blatant PI in the book. And it was a helmet-to-helmet hit on top if that, but somehow, there was no flag despite several refs seeing it. When literally every fan regardless of team affiliation understood that it was penalty and yet the professional refs didn't was an inexcusable lapse on the refs and the League. The Saints did choke the game away, but they shouldn't have even been in that position, because they should've gotten the 1st down after the penalty and likely win the game

      It’s worse because unlike that one blown play, in this game, the Saints still could have won it with their play on the field. They could have stopped the Rams from equalising, they could have drive down the field in OT to win it, or at least kick a field goal. They could have stopped the Rams from kicking the winning FG, avoid becoming the first team to lose in OT after winning the coin toss. The record is currently at 2-11. Instead of blaming everyone else, they could have blamed themselves first, but they didn’t, it’s everyone else’s fault.

      We would've lost that SB, I am positive of it. We were one Alshon Jeffrey dropped pass from being one and done that year. Something in the offense broke with the Dallas game and it never got fixed. That December run for the Saints, the offense was so bad. We went from blowing teams out to just barely winning games thanks to the defense.

    Coming from a Saints fan here, I can’t describe how much this loss still pains me to this day. I don’t think we’ll ever get over this loss. This was by far worse than the 49ers loss in 2011 and the Vikings “Minneapolis Miracle” loss in 2017. See, I didn’t feel like the Saints were quite as good or complete those seasons. 2018 just felt like it was the Saints year and arguably our most complete roster ever. Our roster was just loaded with talent, maybe even more than the 2009 Super Bowl winning team (and 2011) where our defense was pretty mediocre and more so opportunistic. After that huge 10-game winning streak and the big Rams win in the regular season, the Saints were no doubt Super Bowl favorites in 2018. Hurts to know that had DPI or helmet to helmet contact simply been called on that infamous play, the Saints were literally three kneel downs and a chip shot field goal from taking on Tom Brady and the Patriots in what would’ve been an epic Super Bowl matchup. We’ll never know though…
    If anyone remembers that deep pass to Ted Gunn Jr. 3 plays before the no-call, every Saints fan thought for sure that had just stamped our ticket back to the Super Bowl. If only we knew the tragedy that was about to ensue 3 plays later…

      Absolutely. The Minneapolis Miracle play was a terrible play on the Saints part. All he needed to do was tackle him and the Saints win. It was inexcusably a terrible play, but it was STILL a play made by our team.
      The reason the No Call is so painful is the Saints had this game in the bag, too, but instead of a poor play on the Saints part, it was a third party - one that was SUPPOSED to be neutral, and was OBVIOUSLY either too biased to make the blatantly obvious correct call, or too afraid of the consequences of throwing a flag that would decide the outcome of a Championship game... doubly so because the NFL, with two teams in LA - where they've ALWAYS wanted a successful franchise and have NEVER had one, wanted one of them in the Super Bowl to help pull in the LA fans.
      My tinfoil hat theory is still that the refs were told ahead of time to do this - because there were another 3 or 4 crucial no calls in OT, INCLUDING on the Brees INT! The DL clearly hits Brees in the helmet there - if that had been Tom Brady, the ref standing in the end zone would have thrown his flag along with every other ref on the field!

      @@BrentLA Because Deflategate and Spygate are both bullshit (the Colts *also* had underinflated balls in the same game, and Spygate was where the Patriots film crew was filming from [and Belichick did it to the Jets because the Jets did the same thing to them the year before and went unpunished]). This is coming from a Bengals fan.
      Kitty goes meow!
      The most egregious scandals are the Broncos' Salarycapgate in '97/'98 (they had John Elway and Terrell Davis defer some of their salary to the team to help finance the new stadium, but the Broncos didn't report the actual contract amounts, so the Broncos won their first two Super Bowls while about $5M over the cap), the Saints' Bountygate, and the Colts' and Falcons' Crowdnoisegate (pumping artificial crowd noise through the PA while their opponent had the ball).
