Don't forget, Joe Montana went to KC as well... that made Steve expendable
So, Joe 2, Steve 0
Also, Vinny was the Jets' QB in that 3-28 loss.
Only thing I wish you could have shown..
Was that infamous Monday Night Football game when he was with Miami when he had blood all over his face and jersey.
he looked like a rampaging beast
You obviously don't know me or any NFL fan over 30. To presume I nor your viewers know who Steve was assumes we are children or morons. I will unsubscribe so at least I'm not part of the people you believe to be kids or simpletons.
Steve DeBerg was the Fitpatrick of the 80s
Ryan Fitzpatrick, JT O'Sullivan, Chase Daniel, Taylor Heinicke and Gardner Minshew all prob have some DeBerg DNA
@@thepolarphantasm2319McCown brother energy.
That’s Vinny testaverde

A fun story about Steve from the 1990 Quarterback Challenge was he was in the lead at the very end of the competition, and it took Dan Marino drilling a bullseye on the very furthest back target to get the win. Afterwards, Marino wrote him a check for $10 grand.
I remember NFL network used to air all the old QB challenges that one was the best one. I loved how much they all appreciated being there and how much fun they all had
Wow.
Nice
DeBerg made that comeback in '98 and I was 12.
My dad looked at the TV and said, "he played when I was a teenager!"
shit😂😂😂 dats hilarious
Arr you talking about ton braby?
My dad said the same thing ab Brady😂
Damn!
With a lot of the people that took over for DeBerg becoming Hall of Famers, is DeBerg sort of the original Tyrod Taylor?
Tyrod has that negative ass luck though... idk if Steve DeBerg ever had his lung pierced by team docs like "oops"
So will Daniel Jones become a HoFer I hope so lol
@@eznf98 if not Jones, maybe DeVito. Which would be fitting, since DeVito is the most "New York/New Jersey" QB the Giants have had, in our lifetimes at least.😂
no because deberg put up decent career stats
Is Baker Mayfield HoF? Maybe Hall of Danger(ous)?
Many of us have heard of the legend of DeBerg, and I thank you for bringing his story to the masses.
I remember watching that game where DeBerg compound fractured his finger. The cameras briefly broke over to the bench with him standing there screaming in agony while a trainer was reducing the fracture and splinting it. DeBerg went back in.
Then the crazy bastard gave an interview the a few days later holding up Mr. Shocker and saying, “We’re number one!”
I was at that game. Had Bills season tix then. Looking at the play, it was Cornelius Bennett and Jeff Wright who got DeBerg.
@@tygrkhat4087Bennett was no joke. Overshadowed by one of the greatest linemen, Bruce Smith.
@@newagain9964 Oh yeah. Biscuit could ball.
Radio on the back is wild
For a guy with his career, he still threw for more than 34,000 yards. That's pretty damn impressive. Speaks to his skillset and talent. He might not have been THE guy, but teams clearly found a reason to keep hiring him even if he was unlucky with the guys who ended up replacing him.
Bro was "type cast" as a QB coach while he was still playing the position. Pretty impressive (without watching the practice film from those days) to think that he personally elevated 3 Super Bowl winning QB's in some form or fashion. Though Elway would objectively have to be a minor exclusion of said metric since he got waxed in that first appearance and never went back until Terrell Davis was tearing the NFL "a new one"
Steve DeBerg, of Tecmo Super Bowl fame.
His stats kinda sucked in Tecmo
Most people know Okoye was great on that game, and Derrick Thomas as well (game is based on 1990, the year he led the league with 20 sacks and had a a record 7 in one game), but Stephon Paige is basically a Pro Bowl caliber receiver on that game too. Oh, and Nick Lowery, a Pro Bowl kicker during that time, is best kicker on that game (which basically means the cursor barely moves and moves slowly when kicking with him). All are Chiefs.
Dan Saleaumua tackling the center before he could snap it
@@g.shumway5925 Paige was a beast!
Those passes rainbowed off the screen…to be promptly intercepted
He was a solid quarterback, some of the best play action passes you’ll ever see.
The best period .
DeBerg was good, but I always used Elvis Grback's technique to set up defenses as a model when coaching play action.
Shoulder mounted loudspeakers should be mandatory equipment
Testaverde and deberg both had ridiculously long careers
Was just thinking of Vinny.....which one played for the most teams? OK, looked it up....Pro Football Reference claims DeBerg 6 teams in 16 yrs......Testaverde 7 teams over 20 yrs!.....crazy!
And both I thought were great in.the sense that they could come into practically any situation, get plugged in, and the team would improve. They won't be appreciated by the filthy casuals, but the true football fan will remember both of them
@@curtisclayton8023both started off horrible and really turned themselves around.
Vinny i thought for sure would have became a coach
@@janboblarryI loved Vinny with the Jets in 98. He was practically Dan Marino that year.
I was at the game where DeBerg had to wear the amplifier backpack against the Jets in 1980. Walsh would put Montana in near the goal line since all the extra equipment he had on made DeBerg less mobile than usual. Also remember Jets QB Richard Todd set a record for completions in a game that day, but since the bulk of them were dump-offs to RB Clark Gaines (who also set a record for receptions in a game by a RB) with the Jets trailing badly, when they announced those records were set, the Shea Stadium crowd booed. Good times.
Steve was the QB for the 49ers at my very 1st NFL game, and OJ Simpson was the RB.
That's pretty legendary homie. Big ups to you!!!🏈
Wow, you're old. But then again, my first NFL game was Chiefs-Bills in 1975. When OJ came out, the chants of "Juice, Juice" started, one of the kids I was with asked, "Why are they booing him?" So yeah, I'm old.
Another Hall of Shamer
Any quarterback who, upon retiring, continues to attend all team functions because he's basically been the qb coach for years... they're a DeBergian QB.
If the pro game wasn't so weird about making players coaches you'd have Philip Rivers, Matt Ryan and a one armed Drew Brees as QB coaches someplace in the league rn for sure
Plenty of former players are coaches what are you talking about?
@@theredscum4202 yeah but it's like... db coach, line coach. Just recently we have former players getting serious consideration, specifically black players
I mean there was a hot second there where art shell and Mike singletary felt like they kinda blew it for black former player coaches, wasn't too long ago Ed Reed tried to get the ravens to hire him and homeboy got laughed off despite being Ed f'n Reed
Just saying, how did the broncos not save the hassle of resurrecting Sean Payton and becoming the Saints Mountain Time Crew when they prob could have made Uncle Shay Shay coach and blown the roof off the sucka? Him and Primetime coaching in Colorado woulda made for some wild ass press days at least 😂
Fives... id love to see you take on telling the wild ass story of John Fourcade, saints QB in the 87 strike who backed up Bobby Hebert for years afterwards and kinda had a lil pro career sorta despite being Phys Ed teacher at a Catholic girls high school before the 87 strike 😂
He's like half Shane Falco, half Bobby Boucher... all Fourcade.
What!!??! Wow i’ll look him up
@@FivePointsVids In the late 90s he did an MTV cribs style interview with the local NOLA sports guy and dude showed off his floating cabin in the swamp 😂 power off a generator, no fridge but two ice chests (one for cold cuts and such, one for beer) and all kinda pics of him with like Jerry Rice etc
Dude tried to make a comeback... in like 2009 😂
The people need this
11:48 He's thinking: "Hmm, I can still throw as well as I used to. Maybe I should make some calls."
Dude had a ghetto blaster on his back while playing QB in the NFL...that's something you dont see every day!
Interesting! But that must have been one long extension cord and 2-3 kids to keep it away from his feet?
If you played Tecmo Super Bowl, you've heard of DeBerg. Three really good attributes and a piss poor one.
@thgradedropout oh yeah. Paige had that upper level reception ability of 75. KC was a well-rounded team.
I did mix up DeBerg with Krieg as far as the stats go. Dave had the 25/69/69/69.
I always subbed JJ Birden for Rob Thomas lol
I've heard of Steve DeBerg. He's an absolute legend.
First Kansas City Chiefs quarterback I remember. Way back in 1990.
wait a RADIO on his back??? how have I never heard of that before? 😳🐐
All diehard Chiefs fans remember Steve DeBerg
the playoff game with the pin in his finger handing the ball off to Okoye and Word
@@decoyoctopusLol, I can remember that like it was yesterday. One of my all-time, favorite Chiefs QBs.
@@decoyoctopus Oh, yeah. I remember watching that game when the pins were working out of his finger bone. That man would have been at home in old school NFL games.
@@All2Meme Dude those WERE old school games!
✌️😘
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 Schottenheimer didn't like him but had no choice but to play him.
I remember a broadcast where they began:_*_Lets look at the two quarterbacks and their roles in today's game. On one side we have John Elway. John's role is to WIN the game for the Denver Broncos. Other side is Steve DeBerg. Steve's role is not to LOSE the game for the Kansas City Chiefs._*
I remember him, when I started following the NFL in 1992/1993 he was backup on the Bucs I believe.
All I kept hearing was this man needs to be in the Hof solely based on the facts he mentored or backup 4 legends
Steve Debeg is the john the Baptist of NFL qbs
Haha. That made me laugh way too hard.
And they asked themselves, "Could this man be a future hall of famer?" And Steve told them, "No, even though I came before, someone more powerful is going to come."
As a fellow Old of 43 years, 1) I HAVE heard of Steve DeBerg, thank you, and 2) this man is Hope Personified.
Remember DeBerg and the finger when tried to relocate it on the sidelines. Dude was in pain and went back out.
He was arrested in the early 2000s in my hometown. He’s battled alcoholism, believe he is still sober now
The bottle ruined many NFL players lives. The temptations must be insane to try and stay sober in that culture. Hanging around other players who want to unwind, fans want to buy you a drink, sports bars that will part like the Red Sea if you so much as walk in.....
2:18 I hope Diane Dupue had a fantastic day
I remember playing Steve Deberg on Tecmo Super Bowl SNES. He was on the Bucs and I played them alot as they were the closest looking to UT.
Steve Deberg the best quarterback that wouldnt go away..started his career when I was a kid and ended it when I had my own family..
Oh, I remember Steve DeBerg. Saw him play plenty of games.
Nicely done, about time we get a tribute to this badass!
As a lifetime Falcons fan.,.Steve DeBerg will always hold a place in my heart for that '98 season....
I look to his career with tons of nostalgia because my "early years" as an NFL fan came around 1990 to 1994 and here in Mexico he was called "The Ancient One", "The Grandfather".... well, now i'm almost 15 years older than his age at the time... just put a smile on my face.
Drafted by the Cowboys, who had Roger Staubach
Went to San Francisco, who later drafted Joe Montana
Trade to Denver, who later traded for John Elway
Traded to Tampa Bay, who drafted Steve Young
Traded to Kansas City, who later traded for Joe Montana
Went to Miami as an injury replacement. At the time many people didn't know if Marino would play again, but Marino made a comeback.
The guy was displaced by hall of fame quarterbacks six times.
This was an excellent video. I had no idea about this man. Glad I'm subbed.
Watching DeBerg play with that pin in his finger was one of my earliest football memories, and it completely blew my small mind. What a tough SOB.
Also, can you imagine if someone had sacked him and just landed on top of him with that radio pack on his back?
What an odd story. I remember him. Thanks
He was the Chiefs QB in Techmo Superbowl while I was wrecking people with Okoye and Derrick Thomas. I know who he is.
And one of the best defenses of all time.
DeBerg = Forest Gump of football 🏈
DeBerg!! Thanks for making this video. This guy is a legend.
He was a gladiator of all QBs; he played with pins in his pinky finger, now that is tough.
I used to LOVE watching Steve DeBerg play! I had forgotten about him! Thank you!
I LOVED Steve DeBerg! That 1990 season was BRILLIANT, and you're right on point about how gutsy that performance with the pin in his finger was. I consider him one of the most underrated QB's of all time.
Sure seemed for a while like your team's best guarantee of getting a HOF QB was to sign DeBerg. He was good enough to keep Montana and Elway on the bench, at least for a while, and he truly was a WIZARD at play action.
I do remember him! I grew up in Colorado and started paying closer attention to football in 1983, the year Elway showed up. My dad always called DeBerg the nursemaid to the quarterbacks. We kinda always half paid attention to DeBerg's career since he was around so long and was on so many teams.
When you have Crystal Chandelier on your team, you'd best have a sturdy backup like DeBerg at the ready.
Awesome subject and awesome job! I remember the pregame shows doing a story on DeBerg’s pinky that year and the pin that was in there was sticking out of his finger. Yikes!
I distinctly first remember seeing Steve Deberg for the first time I remember with that cast thing on his off hand. I swore he played with that thing on for like half a season. At least he was a starter (a pretty good one at that) for the Chiefs on the greatest football video game of all time…Tecmo Super Bowl.
This is great! Love Steve Deberg. And I'm glad he's enjoying the retired life and his body isn't broken down.
Great vid, dude. I watched the "pinky cast" game live on tv, and remember it quite well...f'kn madman, that guy
28-3 been haunting them since the 90s
It hurts so much
@justinbonds2002 I know I'm sorry bud my nephews are falcon and and I see it every year in their eyes
@@dbkinfe9941 Are your nephews fans or players? Just curious. Also I just wish Ryan and Julio could've gotten their ring. It was their best shot
I remember him on the Chiefs where he played with the broken pinky. The slow motion replay of players brushing against his pinky and him in agony haunts me to this day. That year I became a Chiefs fan for life.
One of my all time favorites.
Nice, great stuff! Thanks.
Fun Fact: Steve DeBerg was the QB on the wrong end of a 28-3 collapse in 1987 with Tampa. Yes there was a 28-3 collapse before the one we all know.
I remember that game. Bucs on the road at St. Louis. Ughh....
Steve Deberg was an absolute baller. I remember his playing days well and him playing with basically a cast on his hand fun to watch.
Excellent. Thank you :)
I’m gonna bring him up in every future goat conversation in relation to football i’m in.
DeBerg was 3-6 vs NY Giants. I don't know why I looked that up?
Excellent video Five Points, but I have to throw a flag. As a Mets fan, you should know that the man pictured at 4:20 is longtime Mets announcer Lindsay Nelson and not Dodger announcer Vin Scully.
Scully was on the radio broadcast I think. Lemme check with Will 😀
Steve was a a very good QB. Awesome upload. Thank you.
Can you do one on Jamie Morris?
Glad to see a story on Steve.😊
I will never forget that compound fracture. He just kept playing. That and Ronnie Lott cutting finger off are two of the most craziest moments in football. It takes death to remove him. Well that or future hall of famer.
I remember hearing DeBerg called the John the Baptist of NFL QBs: He's the guy on the scene just before the Messiah arrives.
He wore camel hair shirts and ate locusts and honey too!
I was amazed watching him play with that finger in a snow game. He played awesome.
I have nothing but admiration for that QB! He had heart and never gave up! Plus he played for the Dolphins for a bit....RESPECT!
Steve DeBerg should be in the Hall of Fame. He also had the battle Jim Plunkett, who was also on that 49ers team. He, too, should be in the hall of fame with his two consecutive Super Bowl victories he led the Oakland Raiders to.
I remember the Kansas City Star had an illustrated diagram of how the pin in his pinkie finger was put in. As a 9 year old, it was pretty cool. Also worth noting he did NOT get replaced by a Hall of Famer in Kansas City, we had to wait until 2018 for that starting QB to take the job.
Thumbnail looks like he's trying to murder Roger Rabbit
When he has that amplifier in his back did he SOUND LIKE THIS!?!
DO YOU REMEMBER ME, FIVEPOINTS? FROM WHEN I KILLED YOUR PLAYOFF HOPES? I SOUND JUST. LIKE. HIIIIIIIIM
I remember Steve DeBerg as a Broncos fan in the 70s. He was pretty good. But we were thrilled when John Elway came to town.
One of my all-time favorites!
back in the day(The early 90's) my friends my friends use to make fun of me because Steve DeBerg was one of my favorite quarterbacks. I could never really explain why but I would always root for him!
😄great story bro. I can relate. Although he wasn't my favorite QB, I would get flack like u did. I always thought he was better than ppl gave him credit for. I would get made fun of whenever I brought his name up. Fun times in the NFL back then.
Steve Deberg played for my Chiefs and kept them competitive when needed!! He taught alot of people the play action fake all you had to do was just watch him.
Are you Nick? This is great!
I was at the Leon Lett game. And the Music City Miracle too..
A movie on this would seem like pure fiction. He looked like a radio man from Vietnam or something. Whatever mojo he had quickly went to his back ups. He must have been a great mentor.
Back in day he had an article in Sports Illustrated where he described his 5 worst injuries-they were brutal l. Dudes a legend
I'm glad you did this...DeBerg and Dave Krieg are somewhat similar "forgotten QBs." Krieg's alma mater, Milton College had folded by the time his NFL career started. His NFL career lasted 18yrs from 1980-1998. Krieg has a 98-77 win/loss record and threw 261 touchdowns to 199 Interceptions. I've always liked Dave Krieg. He was a pretty good player for his era & a guy who year after year it seemed luck was never TRULY on his side..
That's all sorry for the chapter
maybe some day Krieg will get a story :)
I loved watching him play when I was a kid, the cast of Kansas City was awesome. Him and Okoyee made them my afc team. Dude is a fucking legend!
I actually remember watching one of the games he started and won as a Falcon...
The guy had slim chances of success but found some success. Never knew about this guy. He's got my respect though.
A boombox, his finger, that comeback out of nowhere? How have I never heard of this legend.
Somehow, it may sounds strange, but the league needs QBs like DeBerg, when your starter QB, your Franchise Playe, your Star, your Future HOF, is injured, you need a Clutch or a least a reliable QB that can play an ofense and keepmthe moral of the team in shape.
Radio assist ftw! Epic.
As a Chiefs fan who has played Tecmo Super Bowl I was aware of Steve DeBerg
I remember watching DeBerg at almost every stop. He was just unremarkable.
Love the J5 reference dopest robot ever
Did you make that up?!? A Karaoke machine on his back 🎤 🤣
Deberg retired I think in 95, but came back in 1998 to back up Chandler when the Falcons went to the Super Bowl. he’s the oldest player ever on a SB roster because of that.
Dude torched the Broncos as a Chief. He could ball.
Steve Deberg was a very good QB. He was a legitimate starter who could put up lights-out numbers.
This story needs to be a movie
Bout time Steve Deberg got his flowers. Nice video. Thank you.
The boom box on the back is crazy lol
Steve DeBerg was a pretty good QB in the NFL. Bill Walsh designed his Offense around DeBerg and as soon as he got done doing that, they Drafted Joe Montana and then his career took that rollercoaster ride, which I never understood. He had enough talent to lead a team to, and win, a Super Bowl.
I will admit, hat in hand, that when I saw the movie Bad News Bears: Breaking Training, I thought William Devane was Steve DeBerg. (In my defense, I was eight years old.)
Major props for covering a QB that's most often forgotten but a solid and bihg baowed SOB QB. No SB's to his resume and no franchise that ever gave him a shot long term. In many ways the Baker of his day.
Famous for QB'ing a playoff game with a broken finger with a pin sticking out of it. Most QB's now won't even play with an ankle srpain....
