How the NY Giants won two Super Bowls, then became a total mess | Collapse

- When the NY Giants beat the Patriots for their second Super Bowl in five years, it felt like they were in a position to win in any situation. They weren't the best, but they knew when to turn it on. But before we knew it, everything fell apart. Plagued by injuries and salary cap hell, the Giants did all they could to stay afloat. They brought in some shiny new toys like Odell Beckham Jr., David Wilson and Landon Collins, in hopes of rejuvenating what was left of their Super Bowl core.
When that didn't work, they jettisoned the last of the old and used free agency to bring in some fresh blood. It worked, but only for a season, and they soon returned to the decline that - at this moment - has no end in sight.

6:20 don't blame a player for getting his big contract. Careers are fleeting, bodies and brains damaged, former players often bankrupt...

How the greatest show on Turf collapsed
Did you forget who they traded this offseason as well?
As a Cincinnati Bengals fan, I will take a 2-time super bowl winning “collapse” in a heartbeat

Would you take a Wild Card playoff win even if that’s as far as the team goes?
Victor Cruz is one of the biggest football "what ifs" of the 21st century. Always sucks to see such a talented player get destroyed by injuries, and it sucks even more because he's such a nice, humble dude.
Greatest casualty of all? That salsa TD dance :/
Which Victor Cruz Made Popular Out Of Nowhere
i mean he got a ring pro bowls and all all pro selection as an unknown late pick in a sport where the average career is 2 years due to injury so..
Asmosis Jones true, but he was a player who could have had a prime 10-15 Hall of Fame career if he stayed healthy
Atleast he got paid and got to live his dream for a few years not the most memorable career but still successful to some extent
The NFL really does stand for Not For Long.
Ask any player, coach, coordinator, GM, exec, owner, any fan of the team, “Here’s the deal, you win 2 SB titles, 4 years apart, both times winning in overtime on the road in the Conference Championship game, followed by 2 game winning SB drives against the greatest dynasty ever, both SBs. However, after that, no playoffs for 4 or 5 years & losing records”. Everyone is signing on to that.
Both those Giants teams just REFUSED to give up on their seasons after it looked like they won't make the playoffs. Won some crazy tough away games in both runs.
Not me. I'm signing on *8 STRAIGHT YEARS OF DOMINANCE & A DOUBLE DYNASTY* 💯
@@AceSolomon94 we're talking about the NFL thats never happened unless you mean Brady going to 8 straight AFC title games.

Hoping Geno can continue his success from last year.
I was rooting for him untill he decided to trash the giants and the fans for pettiness. Like oh now that you have 1 good season in you're gona start running your mouth? And he still can put up complete stinkers. 13/28 on passing no tds and 1 int 🤢. An elite defense will eat him alive
@@grizzgreen6821Dawg, what are you even talking about? He was hurt on a low hit and said nothing about the fans. Even if he did, they deserved it after the death threats he got after breaking Eli Manning’s iron man streak, a call that he had nothing to do with.
I still find it incredible that Eli Manning led the Giants to two Super Bowls. And not just any two, two epic Super Bowls against Tom Brady. I remember people talking about how his calm and quiet demeanor would help him avoid the pressure of playing QB in NY and they may have been right. He has a few of the most clutch throws in Super Bowl history. Even as a Washington fan, I can't help but have some respect for Eli Manning and what he was able to accomplish.
As a Packers fan I have to agree with u in both super bowls for the Giants they beat my favorite team in playoffs well in 2007 really Brett Favre beat the Packers an but 2011 the Giants just beat Packers an truthfully Eli Clutch Manning did his thing no matter what ppl say about Eli Manning he is a 2 time Superbowl Champion an 2 time Superbowl MVP really he was the first ever Patriots Slayer an he found away to out clutch Tom Brady 2 times in Superbowls if Tom Brady is Superman then Eli Manning was his Kyrptonite I think Eli is HOF bound
What he accomplished as just a ok QB!
I think people forget how good those giant defenses were the year they won the Super Bowls Eli Manning was just there the defense did a lot of the heavy lifted to be honest I respect Eli but he definitely shouldn't be Hall of Fame he's never done anything to deserve
How are you going to feel when he gets voted into the hall of fame?

As a patriots fan, you better
Liam Ryan that’s the nicest thing I’ve ever seen a Pats fan say to a Giants fan
Well, the patriots won 4 superbowls since they played, and the giants been so terrible that eli had to retire. I would say the patriots slayed the giants in the long run.
star fire they’ve won 3 since 2012 but have been to 4.
@@kmh2076 You all are idiots and don't understand if you think that the Giants won be cause of Eli. The fact is that Brady didn't show up either time. If even an average Brady showed up, it was a blow out. And Eli was the beneficiary. Pure and simple. Eli isn't good, he's just lucky.
Collapse withstanding, this team still won 2 Super Bowls in 5 years. At least they made it count twice, that's more than most can say.
That makes me feel a little better thank you
Yea u could be a bills fan. U got 2 sbs. The bills actually had a chance to win 4 Super Bowls in a row and be the greatest dynasty of all time NFL and arguably all time period. Yet they have not one SB it’s soul crushing to be a bills fan believe me
@@TheAoalec14 LOLOLOLOL calm down buddy....
----GSW are prob getting their 3rd ring in a row and 4th in 5 years(?) and i doubt they would be named as the greatest dynasty of all time and that is pretty much exactly what you are saying the bills would have been..... a dynasty has to definitely be over 4 years..... e.g patriots, steelers, bulls, celtics, yankees etc etc
edff edededed are you stupid? I’m strictly a basketball fan, and I know that it is way easier to continue to be great in basketball than it is in football. In basketball you have about 7 core players who you need on your roster, it’s easy to keep these players on your team for a long period of time. In football you have about 30+ who you have to keep. Also, in football everything needs to click and even then you still can get beat, while in basketball if you have the better team with the better players, you’re going to win most of the time. Another factor is injury, football injuries are usually far more severe and happen more often, especially when you’re playing 4 more games a year each year. While in basketball injuries are more freak and don’t usually affect a dynasty. Finally, the age factor. Players in the NFL retire younger, and play way less years. Great players in the nba can play for 20 seasons, while depending on the position, you can be great in the NFL and only play for 7 seasons. 3 rings in a row in football would be considered a dynasty. 4 rings in 4 years would be considered the greatest dynasty in football.
could have been more but in 2008 they were rolling but plaxico shot himself
Jerry Reese screwed coughlin and Eli so badly. Dude refused to fill holes. I'll always hate him for the 2013 and the 2017 season.

Those wins are why Eli has a job to this day.
Yeah those type plays got him there.
Ty Lito fax smh Eli ain’t even better than rivers
@@skywalker2676 I'll take a clutch Eli Manning over a QB who puts up better stats (Phillip Rivers). There's a reason Eli is better, and that's because he is one of the greatest QB of all-time when the game is on the line. I'm not just talking about the 2 SB wins, but im also talking about regular season games and playoffs. The Giants have 2 recent Super Bowl wins and have 4 overall. It's really ok if they're not good for a few years.... it's not a big deal. One team can't win the SB every single season.......and as far as im concerned, unless a team win the SB.....they're all on the same level (except for maybe winning the Championship). So if you take the Cowboys for example, those fans have NO ROOM at all to talk trash with Giants fans because neither team even made the SB. Sorry i got a little off subject. But anyway, ill take those 2 SB over Phillip Rivers stats and Loses. good try though ;)
Preeeeeetty sure the Giants we're still a playoff team until a couple years ago. Anyone who's watched football for more than a couple days can see the O-Line, Defensive, and play calling deficiencies. Eli is a scapegoat to blame everything on for non - fans. BTW I'm a Cowboys and Broncos fan, not a Giants fan.
billy fraiser imma Steelers fan bro but agreed Eli has had a better career but Phillip is better talent Eli is more clutch just like I’ll take Ben for Phillip
I remember there last Supper Bowl. My dad had just lost his six month battle with cancer in November and it crushed my family. He was the biggest Giants fan I knew and to see them win that Super Bowl made us at least for a little bit happy.
I bet he helped us win, looking down with a smile.
Eli Manning should be a hall of famer simply for stopping brady from having 8 rings.
His defense deserve a lot of credit too man.. offense scored only 17 and 21 points in both superbowls, Seahawks scored 24, Falcons scored 28 and still lost.
@@Musicrecords10 for sure. You notice the games the pats lost ultimately came down to the other teams d line. As simple and cheesy as it sounds, besides qb play, a game comes down to the o and d line play. Giants got to Brady in the bowls. Graham made the play of the game in the eagles one
Yup, I think that was proved even in superbowl 50, when you get to the QB and give them no time to throw, it's an easy win
Eli Manning is a career .500 QB. The Giants defense carried Eli.
@@PlymouthGTX1972 Why are you using a team statistic to quantify the impact that Eli's team has had on his career
The single biggest reason they fell off the map was their unwillingness to invest in an offensive line to keep the run game strong and protect Eli.
Yeah their offensive line was a lot better then I think we gave credit for.
It’s not like we weren’t a total mess before, and sometimes during those seasons.
Being a Giants fan is an emotional rollercoaster.

2016 ruined this team. 11-5 planted the seed of false success in the mind of management and they couldn't admit to themselves that they needed a full-on rebuild. Now its 2019 and they're still reluctant to admit it to themselves, which is too bad because id hate to see Saquon waste his prime years with a bad team like what happened with Adrian Peterson.
the problem I foresee is that they might build the offense around Saquon as the Vikings did when they had AP that yeah he has good stats but the team is average at best

Dude was playing great before a knee injury ended his career, much like Cruz. Must be a bandwagon fan...
Eli makes a lot of wrs like that.
Two Interesting ones could be:
1. Why the "lob City" clippers collapsed after 2014/why they never won a championship
2. Why the 2000's Pistons never repeated.
The 2nd one has a really wasy answer. They lost game 7... the year they had the chance to repeat. It was also a road game and at the time no road team had won a game 7 since the Bullets (Wizards) in 78. Plus they were up against Timmy Tony and Pop
For the Pistons the answer is Duncan and Sheed leaving Horry open in game 5.

He's not going to magically lift the team, and his errors are frustrating. But what I've seen over the years if that given protection and a decent defense, he can do great things
Exactly
Eli couldn’t carry the team. He was never an elite QB. He had two good postseason runs surrounded by mediocre seasons before and after those seasons.

They won two against arguably the greatest dynasty ever. It's hard to win one let alone two. This team did well
you even missed david wilson having to retire due to spinal stenosis and of course reese doing some absolutely woeful drafting
He wasn't on the 2011 Giants
I was so excited when David Wilson and Andre Brown joined the Giants. They both looked like amazing prospects, and as a tandem would've been a force. David got his neck broke in his 2nd game I think? Andre got his leg split in two halfway through the season? Reese watched Diehl and Snee leave and did nothing to replace them. No young running back survives for long behind an inept O-line.
@@jakemauger8377 David had a great rookie season
I miss the days of Tuck, Umenyiora, and pre-Fireworks JPP. That combined with an Eli that didn't check down on every other play... it was something special.
It was all because of our O-line...once that went downhill we just couldn't protect Eli anymore and it was all over
Tuck, Osi, JPP, Kiwanuka, Michael Strahan, Corey Webster, and Fred Robbins. The Giants have always had one of the most defenses every year
Looking forward to the Patriots episode in 20 years.
Alex Chambers 60 years*. Tom Brady will play until he is in the triple digits
Trevor Lawrence succeeds Brady and we win another 6 rings in 18 years😈

Don't you wish lmao
Welp...I knew this was coming.
Really? The collapse of a 9-7 superbowl winner that had all the writing on the walls that the squad was getting older without good new replacements is the 3rd episode of a series called the collapse? What about the 49ers, who lost the Superbowl by a field goal in 2013 with one of the youngest and most talented rosters and one of the best coaches in the league go to a 2-14 record 4 years later? That would make a lot more research than looking at an aging roster that was on the tail end of it's life span.

Reese neglected the o-line since he took over
That offensive line was underrated I felt. The Giants were built on both trenches and it showed in those victories.
Any team that wants to put in a full 60 minutes 21 times a season needs to get it done with the big men up front. If ya can't run or drop back to pass what can ya do? Exactly what the latter half of Eli's career looked like - sling slants, go's, and dump offs and get picked off twice (thrice) a game.
eli was super special though the 49ers literally abused him during that 2011 playoff run especially during a qb protected era and he still won the sb. when he was bad, he was the worst, when he was good, he was miraculous

Reese is mostly to blame for the collapse. He caught lightning in a bottle when he drafted Odell, that saved his job for years while the rest of the team deteriorated, Mara used Coughlin as a scapegoat and the New York media blamed it all on Eli and Coughlin.
Honestly as a giants fan we’re coming back we’re young and getting better I’ll take what Eli got us thanks you eli
I really like ur mini documentaries bro u know ur sports and the way u present them are dope I really like the NJ Nets Collapse well I hated the actual collapse bc I’m a jersey native but u get the point lol keep up the good work bro
Damn this was insightful. Despite being an Eagles, I remember routing for the Giants in those Superbowls. I definitely like seeing them win. Now, as for the Cowhoes....
As an eagles fan also hell yea
As a Giants fan in Eagles country I rooted for the Eagles to beat the Pats too simply because I'd rather listen to y'all hang that over my head for a few years endlessly than hear "TOM BRADY GOAT" for the rest of my life.
@@QwertyCaesar well look at u philly screaming about their single sb and everyone else screaming brady the goat😂
My favorite part about reading this is remembering the NFL Top 10 Rivalries and how some Eagles fans, 'casters, players all said how much they hated Dallas even more then the Giants. Like just brought me back super hard to those old clips.
I’ll never forget that Super Bowl victory. Really want to see the team succeed now though because it’s been a decade and a damn rough one.
12:08 shoutout to the hefty lefty! RIP
The giants coaches and front office will still say Elis their guy when he becomes a mummified corpse.
In the Year 3069, you'll See Eli's Head on a Robot, he'll still be playing...
Yea because everything his fault
Which is to say he isn't one already?😂😂😂
I mean, he is. We need a replacement as he's aging out, we should've drafted one in one of the recent drafts, but he's been the sole anchor of the offense for over a decade much in the same way Brees is for the Saints. He's not just the quarterback, he is the captain of the offense with the responsibility that it entails. Never blamed his receivers for a bad pass or a runningback for failing to convert on a 3rd & 1. He's no GOAT but he's been very good for the Giants and while he's easy to criticize he's ultimately the sort of player you can build a team around.
Ramses the Great is still our Pharaoh
I enjoyed how you made a poignant statement, and then emphasize it by casually sipping your coffee...priceless
The NY Giants went 4-1 in the Super Bowl in less than 30 years from 1986-2012. Can’t argue with the facts
Their only SB loss was to Trent Dilfer, a non HOF QB lol!

I think this video was made too early. It's 2022 and the Giants are still collapsing.
I think we bottomed out and won't go any lower because we've hit rock bottom. A screen followed by two QB sneaks at your own 3 yard line. Worst team in the league by far. The Lions, Jags, and Jets are all overtly superior despite worse win/loss records. I'm not sure it can even get worse than this - if the team lost Daniel Jones (an average QB at best) in week 1 the team would've went 0-17.
@@QwertyCaesar Daniel Jones isn't even average. He's a lousy QB who even in his third year still looks shaky and unsure. Even Belichick couldn't fix this guy. I honestly believe the only reason the Giants picked him was because he looked like a clone of Eli Manning and thought they were getting a younger version of him.
as a giants fan, it was hard to hold back tears during this one
Do the fall of the Blackhawks or the fall of the Los Angeles Kings next!
Might be a little early for both. Maybe a year or two for them to fully accept the rebuild.

Manning was QB on 2 super bowls team, that is same amount as Favre and Rodgers 1992-2020, those two are considering Top10 at QB and both of them had loaded teams, maybe even more loaded than Giants had during Manning time.
Excellent video and analysis. As a Net fan, watching what Jason Kidd did for this team was unforgettable. From a laughingstock to a title contender, but you could not keep Kidd happy, no one could. The window was there and it closed just before they could have backed their way to a NBA title. The lack of a competent big man was all that was missing. After years of suffering, the Nets are finally relevant again and now have virtually no competition in the city as the Knicks replaced Ringling Brothers as the biggest circus at the Garden.
lol what a ride the nets went on - and now the knicks actually being competent
For people that were not old enough or interested in football at the time, that Odell Beckham Jr catch was so impressive and media covered that I (a Cowboys fan who watched that game) didn’t even remember winning that game. I always thought we lost. The catch overshadowed the game in most memories. He controlled the db the entire way down the field to the catch.
Me too as a cowboys fan I remember that same exact memory as you did when I was a kid
Geno!!!
SB Nation, how about profiling the Washington Redskins after the 1991 Super Bowl title? That was a crash and burn of breathtaking magnitude
Age, the brand new cap system, and a GM that focused on nailing his 7th round picks more than his first round picks killed that team.
How the Houston Texans thought Charlie Cassery was a great GM hire is beyond me, especially given his performance once the salary cap was implemented.
8:38 - And then four years later, the Giants trade OBJ to the Browns for a first & third round pick and a box safety. As a result, they had to take $16 million in dead cap AND as an added bonus, they drafted Daniel Jones.
"OBJ didn't start his antics overnight. You knew damn well what he was when you put pen to paper. So now you not only did you sell him in embarrassing fashion, you also get a wonderful parting gift: $16 million in dead cap." - UrinatingTree

I'm liking this series. So many teams to choose from. Teams that could have been great dynasties that only won once (85 Bears, 86 Mets, 2013 Seahawks) Or teams that slowly collapsed from greatness going from heavy favorites to a fringe playoff team to losing seasons (Red Wings ending their playoff streak, the NY Rangers since 2015, The Buffalo Bills after Kelly)
The Geno Smith comment didn’t age well
Could do the collapse of the mid 2000 White Soxs
Dale Cournoyer I still don’t understand how that team was so dominant and now they haven’t had a winning season since like 2011

Giants had a slew of great WRs whose careers ended in their 20s because their knees fell apart. Steve Smith, Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz. A well done and accurate video on my GIANTS... One thing that the makers of this video forgot to mention was that the Giants first round pick in the 2012 draft (three months after the 2nd SB win over the Pats) running back David Wilson was forced to retire during training camp 2014... Cause was Spinal Stenosis... He had an excellent rookie season but only played in 5 games in 2013 and was diagnosed following week 5... This set the Giants back at least five years...

Do a collapse of the 2011 Mavericks 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Cuban was cheap af and put too much capital is expecting a big name FA to come, thats what it was. Was sad to see happen as a Mavs fan.
There can't really be a collapse if there wasn't really any buildup. The Mavericks up to that point had been consistently a quality team since the early 2000's -- it wasn't as if they were terrible a few years back, got better on a quick high, and then blew up after the championship. Even prior to their championship window, they had always been a good to great team -- and fairly consistently so. They simply got a lot of veterans a couple seasons prior to 2011 who finally had what it took, with the help of some highlight seasons from role players, to take down teams that featured young "paper champion" teams such as the Blazers, championship-hangover Lakers, and a still-inexperienced and immature LeBron-led squad. Afterwards, they fell apart because (1) their success was driven by veteran power that gave the last of what it got in 2011 and (2) their performance regressed to the mean as any non-dynasty title-winning team tends to do after "that one magical season". It also didn't help that other teams simply got better. 2011 was one of the last years where at least one relatively underdog franchise could make it to a Finals berth -- afterwards you got a hungry Heat superteam led by a humiliated and absolutely championship-starving, chip-on-his-shoulder LeBron and then not long after that, the Warriors that we have all come to know and love today.
In short: Not every team's fade into obscurity is necessarily a collapse, especially since "collapse" implies a sense of disappointment and failure of expectations. Seeing the Mavericks win that single chip was fun for me as a Dallas resident back in 2011, but I and most fans did not see any sign that this team was dynasty material, and so when we were proven right, it wasn't really that big of a deal. No expectations, no disappointment. It would have been more of a collapse if the Mavericks were an obvious "dynasty in the making". They weren't.
Hooked on Chronics same 🤘🏼
Everyone knows the Macericks were built around Dirk. They peeked in 2011 and beat favourites OKC (with Harden, Durant and Westbrook) were also the underdogs in the final against Miami, Dirk made something like 17 foul shots? They won and Dirk kept getting paid alot. They were OK in 2014 losing in 7 to eventual champs San Antonio. They're problem was being way too loyal to Dirk after he passed his prime. Now, with Hardaway and Doncic, they will rise again provided those two are team-minded. It's been a long wait, Mavericks fans!

Do a video on how Peyton Manning became great and Ryan Leaf a bust.
John Marc Hinds ryan leaf really need help i hope he find it
Peter Smith I hope he does too. Even though he's a bust, he's still a human being and hey, if I got drafted, I'd be a bust too.
m.ruclips.net/video/rBzaAZ24g6Y/видео.html
Was interesting to hear Ryan talk in retrospect about the whole situation, despite what happened way back when, he seems like a very down to earth and mature guy now.
Noooooooo. I don't care about Leaf and everyone's done it.
The NY Times already did that story. Interesting story too.
This is not your best work. This glosses over a lot of the failures important to understanding the collapse. Most egregious of which was the horrendous drafting and failure to invest in the OL. Almost all the guys that were moved/released from the fading 2011 champions picture were already bad when released/ released a year too late. Fans had been begging for better young talent on the team and constantly fed older half-measures. Reese had tried his hand at Belichick style moves thinking he could get the most out of players that had failed elsewhere/draft picks that were the “JPP of [insert position here]”. If Reese had hit on 1 or even 2 more picks in any draft during this time span Coughlin isn’t fired after 2015 and the team is likely not where it is today. Jerry Reese’s horrendous drafts deserve more attention.
Case in point, the Giants passed on Todd Gurley and drafted Erik Flowers. Say what you want about Gurley's decline but who has had a better career?
@@andrewr7395 The mere fact Ereck Flowers is the kind of player who quits when things are rough is enough evidence he was a mistake.
It was consistent as all of his collapse videos are. He sticks mostly with the core personnel that were there for both Superbowls (minus Cruz, but that's because he was so critical to the Giants success in 2011), and they shade out as they leave the Giants. So, any rookies after 2011 are not part of his collapse format. I do agree the drafting was atrocious post 2011, and that all falls on Reese. And in his desperation to keep his job, overspent and saddled the Giants for the last 4 years.
As a giants fan, I'll tell you, we were a mess during those super bowl runs as well. I love those superbowls but we were rough both those seasons
Exactly. Getting hot in the playoffs means a team is that year's champions, but it doesn't mean they were the best team, or will be next year.
You guys make sports stories even more fun and interesting. Much love
