Join me today on the Queen Mary 2 luxury ocean liner, as we travel from London to New York across the Atlantic. We're retracing the historic route, many would have taken between Europe and the USA. I'll share with you exactly what it's like to live onboard this ship for the 7 day voyage, from my Princess Grill Suite, to the various restaurants, the spa facilities and even the kennels! The best part is i'm taking my mum along for the trip, something i've been desperate to do forever!
I hope you enjoy my first venture in the world of cruises (although don't let anyone hear you call this a cruise, it's a voyage!). I will continue to review First Class flights & sleeper trains, I just thought this was an interesting change up for the channel.

This line is the same line as the Titanic, in fact Cunard took over and bought the White Star Line. For any fan of Titanic history this is a very interesting journey, not to mention the last survival of the great and luxurious transatlantic voyages of the past.

To be fair, the White Star Line effectively ceased to exist upon their merger with the Cunard Line. I get what you mean, but I think it’s a bit of a stretch to call this the ‘same line’ that operated the Titanic, especially considering the fierce rivalry between White Star and Cunard during Titanic’s day.

I did the same trip with my grandmother.
Essentially all of the original Cunarders were built in our hometown, including the Lusitania, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, and QE2. She promised to me when I was 4 that we'd go on a Cunard liner one day.
So for my 18th and her 70th we board the QM2. It was a wonderful trip, and I even met my current girlfriend and got my first kiss onboard!

Assumably, the Queen Mary 2 seemed like a very ancient relic, more of an artifact rather than a luxury cruiser. But honestly, it has glitz and glamor that could put any standard cruise ship to shame. I would love to sail from the states to the kingdom one day on sea with this lovely lady.

My six yr old is obsessed with ocean liners and the idea of afternoon tea - the only trouble is that we’re from Texas, so “afternoon tea” here means a big ol pitcher of iced sweet tea. We, like the British, also take this quite seriously. Love from a Space City native btw. You put the BUTTER on first. So it’ll melt.
Looks amazing. It’s so strange having a small child who builds Titanic, Olympic, Britannic, Lusitania, and Mauritania in Minecraft, but he absolutely wants to do this Cunard trip more than the Royal Caribbean ship. The only thing, as a cruiser, I keep looking for - how is the casino?

Don't refer to the Queen Mary 2 as a boat, a boat is something you row across a pond. The Queen Mary 2 is a ship, an ocean liner. Mariners tend to get rather peeved when you call the ship a boat.
In contexts where it’s important to distinguish the difference, the distinction made between ship and boat is typically based on the size of the craft being discussed and if it is used only for ocean or sea travel. Additionally, the word boat can refer to vessels that don’t have any sails or engines, such as a kayak or a rowboat, whereas the word ship usually refers to vessels with many sails or large engines. Even in casual usage, it’s very uncommon for someone to call a small craft a ship, unless they’re doing so jokingly.
One distinction made in nautical contexts is that the word ship often refers to vessels too large to fit inside other vessels. By contrast, the word boat is often used to refer to smaller craft that can fit inside larger ones. For example, a massive cruise ship may have a large number of lifeboats inside it.

On ocean liners, with no port stops the crew really needs to be on their A game to entertain the passengers all day every day. Glad to see you had a great time. Cruises are a great way to travel with family since you can spend quality time with them, but also easily do your own things separately.

Cunard is my favorite line by far, because it has that nostalgic old elegance feel to it. I did four crossings as a youngster with my parents on the QEII in the 70s, then in the 2010s spent four months on a world cruise aboard the new Queen Elizabeth. I've been on NCL, RCL and Holland America and they all pale in comparison to me. Glad you got to experience this!

Good coverage of the Princess experience. Here are a few things that weren't mentioned:
Cunard is the only line, to my knowledge, that maintains the class system. The lowest class is Britannia, for which the main restaurant is the Britannia Grill. The menu choices in this restaurant are much more limited than in the higher classes, Princess Grill and Queen's Grill, there is no a la carte menu, and each course is limited to a choice of four or five items, one of which is vegetarian or vegan and one "healthy". Britannia passengers can alternately eat at specialty restaurants for an additional charge, or at the pub or buffets. During off season fare in Britannia class can be under $1000.
The top class, Queen's Grill, is Princess on steroids. Large cabins and suites, extensive choices in the restaurant including caviar, and your choice of free alcoholic beverages in your cabin, replenished as needed. Afternoon tea and cocktails in the area reserved for Princess and Queen passengers only. Two assigned butlers per cabin. One crossing on the Queen Victoria I was upgraded to the enormous Berengaria Suite with two bathrooms, living and dining rooms, tub and shower, kitchen, and enormous wrap-around deck.

It would be interesting if you would check out some of the smaller vessels such as Windstar or Quasar which is specialist in Galapagos Island cruises. Being able to go to some places that the massive ships can't seems like fun.

I am so thankful for the wonderful relationship you have with your mum as we should ALWAYS treasure our mother's, and it did pull on my heart strings watching the 2 of you together like that, just enjoying each other's company! My mother passed of cancer almost 20 years ago and she wasn't well in the 5 years or so before that but I would take my mum with me on a trans Atlantic crossing like that if she were alive now, in a heartbeat! I very much enjoy all your travels Will as you take me places that I would otherwise never see or go to.
