    That refund is incredible. Yes, I could see the problem with the air conditioning not working and waiting a few hours for another locomotive, but the line closure was not the Orient Express' fault. Still, this is terrific customer service on their part and well done to them.😊

    First, let me say that that was an incredible journey to watch. The Orient express has been on my bucket list since I was 14 or 15 years of age and I am now 54. I know that I likely will never be able to afford this trip for myself and my wife to take, so watching you and your wife take it was wonderful. I was heartbroken at your two missed elements due to circumstances out of their control. When you told us that you got a full refund because of that, I actually teared up because knowing how expensive that was and they were willing to just write that off for all 90 passengers is incredible. Though my wife and I have recently started to travel, this one will most likely have to be vicarious through you and your wife. So thank you!

      My mother in law travelled well into her 60s, and one of my aunties travelled until her 80s, so don't ever give up hope of going on this trip. Put money in a safe. I put 100 a month in a safety deposit box, and it stopped me spending it from my bank account. It's easy. So never stop dreaming.

    Since the price of a trip like this is for the ordinary person extremely expensive (even though you get incredible value for money food and drink wise including excellent service) I am still amazed in the end when they offer to reimburse you the FULL cost of the trip or give you 130% credit value towards all their offerings and trips. THAT is something that also tells even though it is super expensive this is how they take care of their customers. Great video as always and looking forward to your next adventure.

      My wife and I were on this same trip. Earlier in the trip, the AC on the train was not keeping up.
      I'm pretty certain that every time we entered a new country (which was often on this trip) the train engine was swapped for an engine from that country's train service.
      Unfortunately the Bulgarian train engine failed (I guess) quite quickly. So we further delayed, waiting in the heat without any AC. This caused the train interior to cook. My wife and I took a siesta (I suppose) to avoid the worst of the heat.
      A new train engine showed up and we got back on our way. But this delay put us many hours behind schedule and we missed nearly the entire time allotted for our beach side stay in Varna. That was quite disappointing because the resort at Varna looked to be absolutely lovely.
      The "fun" part of this section of the trip was when we did arrive in the Varna station (remember, many hours late). There was still a huge crowd of people at the station to greet us and the train. It almost felt like a crowd of paparazzi.

    When a trip is all inclusive (and certainly on the expensive side), there's not a lot to offer your customers when things to awry. A full refund or 130% of the value in credit is impressive. I'm sure they have insurance to cover situations like this, but it's still an incredible gesture.

      We received the exact same compensation offer from Belmond. And I can assure you we are not famous.
      But this action is what outstanding organizations do. Fix it in real time (like they did with accommodating the delay with the avalanche) or if you cannot fix it during the trip, make compensation after the trip as much as possible. We felt the offer from Belmond was above and beyond.

    I feel like this video/trip is on another level compared to last year's trip! I know Budapest would have been inviting, but I think it's pretty awesome you got to spend the day in that ski town because of the landslide. So long as you don't have obligations at the end destination (Istanbul), I think the delays make the trip even more fun. Going with the flow on the rails!

    I just randomly had this recommended to me. I didn't really even consider the fact that the Orient Express would still be a thing in this day and age. This is pretty amazing to watch.
    I think the really interesting thing was despite the bumps along the way that the service was an insane value. Rock slide up ahead? Well, let's just set something up for you here in Austria... Oh, the lodge doesn't have enough wait staff to accommodate all our passengers.. No problem we'll come over and help you out with that... That's crazy! That's going above and beyond.
    And then at the end to get a full refund because of all the small things that went wrong on your journey... I can't even imagine that kind of customer service.

    Really excellent video - full of information and details. What an absolutely incredible journey - the luxury, attention to detail, quality of food/drinks, improvisation during delays, firiendliness of the staff (waiting on the platform each time you reboard), fun of the entertainment....it's magical. The price is jaw-dropping but I guess some of that is to keep guests happy during the unexpected delays (getting 90 passengers in for lunch - that's quite an achievement!).

    We had 2 journeys on the restored Orient Express back in the 1980's. The first was London -Paris, and a few years later we did Paris-London. Both trips were very pleasant, but we were glad we had decided not to do the overnight sections as the plumbing then was pretty basic - it bore no comparison to a couple of trips we did on the Indian Pacific. We were very glad to have chosen the Orient Express to have done the Paris-London journey, which was out of the ordinary. There was a severe storm in the Channel and the train were diverted to different Channel ports, both in France and then in the UK. We did not have to worry about organising these changes, just sit back and order another pot of tea.
    There's luxury, and then there's luxury. The restored train does it in 1920's fashion, and does that very well indeed. Service and food was excellent. On the Indian Pacific, you got good food and service, along with modern plumbing and ride.

    • @andersgrassman6583
      @andersgrassman6583 Год назад

      Dear Sir, could you elaborate on the "On the Indian Pacific, you got good food and service, along with modern plumbing and ride", as I'm not indigenous to the subtleties of Anglo-Saxon communications? Could you try to clarify your perceived qualities of th Indian Pacific travel?

    • @doubledee9675
      @doubledee9675 Год назад +5

      I started a reply but it has somehow got lost. The double compartments of the Indian Pacific give you a private cabin. The back of the sofa folds down to give a single bed while there is an upper single bed as well. Each double bedroom has its own private bathroom with shower and wc. I can't now be sure if the handbasin was in the bathroom or if it were in the cabin itself. I think it was in the cabin. By contrast, you had to go to the end of the coaches on the Orient Express to have a wc, shared with the other passengers. My memory is that there was no shower for passengers, shared or not. Having your own shower and wc was what I meant by modern plumbing. The modern ride comes from advances in springing and suspension generally from the days when the Orient Express was new. The suspension may well have been updated since we last travelled on the OE.
      Of course, the Indian Pacific coaches don't have the woodwork or elaborate upholstery of those in the Orient Express. I prefer to have my own bathroom including a shower to 1920's furnishing details. Others may well make different choices.@@andersgrassman6583

      @@doubledee9675 Thank you for answering. My wife put us on the Singapore-Bankook back int the 90's for part of our honey moon, as she kwows I'm a train fanatic.😁
      I really think this type of train travel ought to be offered as an alternative to ship cruises. to a much wider public, and at all price ranges!
      Once I was a poor (well...) teenager, travelling major European cities, once actually sleeping in the overhead piecemeal luggage nettrays in a cabin. That one is THE singularily outstandingly most uncomfortable trainride of my life! Not sure even what country I woke up in. Woke up smiling though!
      😃
      I think we should make the advantegerous, uncomftorbable and maybee somewhat dangerous travels when we are young. Yoy know, it's great fun knowing you took part in a discussion on whether to allow goats (!) on the train in Italy. And a couple of decades later you enjoy insane nice luxury train travel. That actually makes a detour to watch the acctual "Bridge on the Riwer Kwai". (Beeing slightly upper class, my tip is always bring decent linen suits. They wear well also when creased. When things go completely awry, which they surprisingly often do, I find it very comforting to wear decent apparel.

    • @doubledee9675
      @doubledee9675 Год назад

      I'm glad to say that I have never tried sleeping on a luggage rack. I konw some who tried it and they said much as you did, warning against it in strong terms. The Indiuan-Pacific has gained much the sort of market you suggest, the alternative to a ship. People fly one way and get the train for the return journey. That's all very well if you like singalongs, but that's not for us. We liked just sitting in our comfortable cabin watching the scenery as it goes past. A cup of tea from time to time, nothing any more energetic than that. @@andersgrassman6583

      My wife and I were on this same trip. Assuming the delays did not occur and the AC had worked as expected, we would have found the trip "worth" the cost.
      It was our 25th wedding anniversary trip, and yes the ultimate Bucket List only once in a lifetime experience. Obviously it helps to be a huge fan of the beauty of the 1920's Art Deco decor, but ...
      the opulence of the historic train cars, the opulence of the food and drink (if seemed like we were always drinking champagne), the convenience of having stewards and other dedicated staff always handle your luggage, the incredible variety and quality of the stops along the route, the joy of the Bar car and most incredibly, the absolute excellence of EVERY staff member on the train made the trip worth the cost.
      The hiccups that occurred on this one trip were unfortunate and distracting. But that is where the perhaps over and beyond post trip compensation offer from Belmond convinced me these trips are "worth" it.

    A dream trip. The luxury and beauty of the original cars are a marvel to see. I am envious.
    Just two little things - well, three:
    I would have liked to see the fish dishes, but nobody has to eat fish just to make me happy!
    I love menus. I would have liked the camera to linger on them a little longer.
    Finally, l'Etoile du Nord was mentioned three times, and all three times it sounded like "les toilettes du Nord". The Toilets of the North is not the ideal name for a restautant! The final "e" in étoile is not pronounced, allowing us to move away from the facilities and back to the Star of the North.

    May 20, I was born in 1961. The Orient Express original stopped running on the same day, unsure the year. I always was dreaming of a trip on the iconic train. You are blessed.😊 Cher and I share the same b'day. Makes it more precious to me at least.🇨🇦🙋🏻‍♀️🧸🌺🌸🌺💖 Not a fan of chatter though. Prefer to watch and enjoy the natural sounds. No disrespect to you.

    This looks like such a unique experience and you made us feel like we were with you on board. Really like your storytelling on- and off-camera. Also, Millie looks fantastic and her outfits are all so well put together! Maybe you can do a „what to bring on a sleeper train“ video.

    Amazing on the refund. Sadly, as ever, amazing customer service for those with the deepest pockets. Can you imagine Ryan Air doing the same?! Love the channel.

    I think the Restaurant will be remembered by the Trainteam. I think not every restaurant is able to posess this amount of people in such short order.

    Yep, this is one item that's on my bucket list. I will add this. I'll pay the extra for the suite instead of paying 90k USD for a closet room with bunk beds.

    What a ride! Absolutely LOVED this vicarious train trip. As always, it's great to see the lovely Millie. Just one note (because Canada is officially bilingual), l'etoile doesn't have a "t" at the end (i.e. the "e" is silent and the word ends with the "l" sound...twall).

    Given the cost and that it only runs once a year, you think they would have made extra sure that facilities like the a/c were 100% reliable but fair play to them for their response.

      My wife and I were on this trip also and I had the same thoughts. I have come to understand that while the Paris - Istanbul trip only occurs once a year, the cars of the train are in use probably nearly the whole year on the "other" Vencie Simpson Orient Express trips (e.g., Paris to Venice, Amsterdam to Venice).
      It sounded like the cars are not used 50 weeks a year and then hauled out for the week of Paris to Istanbul and second week of Istanbul to Paris. I do not think that the case.
      Regardless, we received the same compensation offer that Will did and thought the offer was appropriate and almost certainly beyond what could have been offered, even expected.

      Electrical is provided by the engine, and it seems borders don't allow engines to pass. So you have to rely on whatever the country railways provide, which has failed here.

    Wow. An incredible journey and so amazing they offered a full refund! Astonishing level of service that would have been so unexpected. The air conditioning was a minor discomfort and, of course, if you were expecting the full experience in Budapest then that would have been very disappointing but its not the fault of the business that there was a landslide! I thought they may offer you some credit but a full refund is exceptionally generous. Thank you for posting this.

      That is so cheap 🎉 3€ per sock 🧦 blew my mind once (6€) 🤪 I just went and bought more socks 🧦 and washed the others at home 🏡 Cruise ships should just have laundries like good hotels do. Pay 4€ for a machine and maybe another 4€ for the drier and have a possibility to iron something that has gone boink. Crew has those facilities so we know they can do it 👍
