An odd thing about KiKo is that he ended up being popular in Japan... 50 years later when he appeared in a series of commercials for Kodak film in the 80s, which then led to merch, such as plush toys.

I wish Jackson's "King Kong" had gotten a tighter edit. It drags a little at times, unnecessarily so. At its core, the story is simple: crew of adventurers find a huge gorilla and bring it to New York, where it then wreaks havoc and meets a terrible fate. As much as I loved the film (I saw it three times in the theater), it would have been better if 20 minutes or so had been shaved off the final cut.

LaBelle Helene isn't playing a guitar she's playing a tenor ukulele (possibly a concert ukulele). But given it has 4 tuning pegs instead of 6 it's definitely a ukulele.

I've seen King Kong several times over the years. But have seen Son of Kong only once over 40 years ago. I've seen Mighty Joe Young a couple of times (once the whole movie, second time the latter half on TCM).
I remember when WWOR, channel 9, in NYC would broadcast King Kong every Thanksgiving day. Yes, good times!

I always thought that the ending of this movie would've been better if instead of seeing a ship in the distance, they saw Kiko swimming off into the horizon. Denham lead Kong to his death but is able to live knowing his son still lives.

Cooper had grand plans for this movie including a scene where the crew enter the now abandoned village and get attacked by dinosaurs who have entered through the gate that Kong destroyed in the previous film, tribal warfare between multiple natives on the island, a dinosaur stampede, and a more vicious baby Kong. But RKO wanted the film out in less than a year and gave him half of the budget of King Kong to make the film. That's why we got this watered down movie which was a pale image of the epic that Cooper had planned.

Spot on about Son of Kong. Movie does pick up once they hit the island, and Willis O'Brian's leftovers are still good. But out of the three, definitly feels like the original Mighty Joe Young is what I'd watch to follow up the original King Kong. And come to think of it, I haven't seen it in decades. Whelp, got a movie night to do sometime.

It may not be the classic that original was, but is still important for a number of reasons. Firstly the idea of sequels wasn't very prevalent at the time, so if this didn't happen we may not have had the refined sequels we got in later decades. Secondly I really find the thought of the consequences of Kong's rampage being looked at quite interesting

Wow, a Son of Kong review that's as long as the material worth talking about.
I like Son of Kong but I'm in no way deluded about it. I think it's hilarious that Carl Denham got a love interest... how far do you have to sink in life that hooking up with him is up?
"I had a successful trained monkey, no, my act followed a successful monkey act. Then I lost everything, including my father and I had to choose starving to death on a tropical island.... or getting with the old white man. Denham won best out of 5, it was close."
