An addiction centre with life skills and work training would be great. Getting clean is just the start. Getting help to move into a more normal lifestyle is a least as beneficial. The remote setting, without distractions would help to facilitate that. A remote children's hospital could present challenges for parents without a car.

Why do the hse let so many building go to ruin, its sickeming ,look at the home and other buildings...should become sxhool, hosspital or training hospital
Built 120 years ago, in the middle of absolutely nowhere, with at least 10,000 poor dead souls wandering the corridors.. This building should be razed and the forest allowed to grow back over it. It should be treated as the graveyard that it is...
The site for a sanatorium was always chosen in a remote place, if possible. It was thought that the clean fresh air was a cure for TB, a dreaded disease. Poor cramped unventilated housing helped it spread. The patients themselves wanted to go as they were desperate for a cure. Sadly 10,000 died there. A highly contagious disease, at least they were isolated, with less chance of spreading it. I had an aunt who recovered in Newcastle. 4 ancestors in the same house died of it in 1889/91. They lived on the top of a hill, where the wind would blast the head off one. It was often said of a family that they were 'delicate' meaning there was TB in them and not everyone wanted to marry in there.
Being Edwardian this will be extremely well constructed and out of the very best materials. This is a great national asset built by the people for the people and should be put to use again as a hospital/caring facility of some kind for the Irish people. It is their heritage and belongs to them. Their ancestors built and paid for it just as they will be paying for any refurb out of their taxes now.
We can’t afford to run another hospital, as we can’t currently manage the ones we have, but would make an excellent college, or boarding school, or even a training centre , it’s a beautiful building, just because it has a sad passed doesn’t mean it should be left to rot.
It’s a scandal that the HSE did nothing with the building for years. It should have been given to a local Housing Association or Community Cooperative for renovation for housing and local services long ago. Both the HSE and government have lost trust and legitimacy as responsible owner of the property. Give it to the local community asap
It's amazing how it can be left to rot when they're is a shortage of places for elderly people and homeless ,and now they can at the drop of a hat spend millions on it for scammers
And it was advertised for sale a year are two ago for €350k it's in poor repair only the house and church and one building would be worth keeping demolition of the remaining would be the most cost effective way.
It's isolation makes it unsuitable for homeless people and asylum seekers. Very few options when there are no facilities at all, out in the forest on it's own. Protesters are wasting their time.
I ever heard of this hospital is it just left to rot now seeing that they closed it I just think it’s disgraceful to see such fine buildings left to rot ,probably open it for migrants, although it’s there in a place like a Forrest they won’t like it being isolated ,
The hospital has served its purpose but was probably uneconomical to upgrade and maintain so it was closed. A possible repurposing of the sight would be expensive and the localtion too isolated to attract investors.
Well if it's going to be used for anything it will need to be refurbished first so noone is going in there anytime soon. People are wasting their time protesting outside.
