The whole point of this massacre of unarmed civilians was to strenthen unionism and deter the Irish from resisting British occupation and oppression. It had the opposite effect. More than 100 British soldiers were killed in the 12 months following the massacre and the troubles were to last more than 30 years.

Fun-fact they were initially WELCOMED by the N.Irish Catholic population. The IRA didn't like it (for obvious reasons), but British soldiers - at the very beginning of their deployment in N.I. were CHEERED by Catholics. They thought the Army would protect them from Protestant paramilitaries, and - who knows! - the ordinary Soldiers might even believed they were on a mission there to keep the peace and (on many occasions) TRIED to do their job! Many of them as far as I recall even came from Ireland/N.ireland and might even still had relatives there! It took only a few years and the situation turned by 180°. One year into the deployment and the "top-brass" of the units deployed in N.I. were already dining, partying, dancing and playing golf with the top-leaders of the Protestant community. They weren't "neutral" AT ALL. By 1970/71 the "rumors" about alleged (mixed) hit-squads from the British Army Intel & Spec-Ops together with the UVF/UFF paramilitaries (i.e: TERRORISTS) carrying out - ALLTOGETHER! - killings of suspected IRA-members - or UVF killings carried out with intel provided by the Brit-Intelligence weren't "rumors" anymore - they were an "open secret". ...AND THEN - January '72 comes along! ...and believe or not! - but the IRA COULDN'T BE MORE HAPPY! From one of their LOWEST points in History they were able to jump back on the scene - recruit SCORES of people, reorganize, resupply and go on the "attack" (if by "attack" you mean terrorist bombing campaigns). Thanks to few trigger-happy fools the "romance" between the locals and the Army was OVER & DONE - FOREVER!
PS. ...and WTF was even the Army DOING THERE ANYWAY??... like they couldn't stay afar and watch from distance??

They were met with the full force of British imperialism's military might. This video shows the real and terrifying face of armed occupation. But the people were not deterred or frightened and resisted the tanks and guns. Forcing the now King of England, and former Colonel in Chief of the terrorist Parachute Regiment, to come to terms with and to shake hands with the leaders of the risen people of Derry and occupied six counties of Ireland. One of the first Catholics to be murdered by the IRA was a mother of 10. When the British Army was first deployed to Northern Ireland, most Catholics welcomed them. This poor woman made the mistake of offering soldiers guarding her block of flats a cup of tea. The IRA were determined to terrorise the Catholic population into supporting them. Her killer - an IRA female gangster who combined her political views with for personal profit armed robbery and drug dealing - has been identified in a well researched book by a respected American reporter. She is one of the mass murderers given immunity in the Good Friday deal; she won’t be brought to justice. But being a shameless money grabbing grifter, she is now taking civil action against the historian for naming her. A true Irish patriot!

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
      John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
      Mark 1.15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
      2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
      Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

The tactics used in Aden and Kenya were used in a 'British' city. I have no time for men of violence of any stripe, but don't kid yourself the British were anything other than active players in this tragedy. The same unit killed ten innocents in Ballymurphy six months before and literally got away with murder. They did it again in Derry. Teacher replied
They wouldn't have bothered to take the whole world by force had they believed in loving thy neighbour.

Teacher of course they do, they came to save us from the Protestants.
Lad... but aren't they also Protestant.

    It's about love and hate.

A coward of love and a coward of hate.

I understand the Paras were to use the riot as a way to draw out IRA members esp snipers and shoot them, this strategy I suggest was very dangerous and resulted in civilian casualties (a massacre). Intelligence as very poor, internment was ineffective and inappropriate. Later with better intelligence the SAS ambushed IRA members, they killed over 26 IRA members. For civilians it was a terrible situation such an horrific waste of life. The UK govt had a lot to answer for, terrorists on both side did horrific things and soldiers could be very brutal.

It massively increased Catholic and Nationalist hostility, gave the IRA a massive surge in recruitment, strengthened and emboldened the IRA, resulting in a significant increase in the number, profile and severity of IRA attacks, and significantly worsened and lengthened the overall conflict.

Major Ted Loden, commander of Support Company, members of which had fired all the shots which killed 14 and wounded 14 others, told Saville that shortly after the killing ended, he had taken down in his own hand statements from each of the shooters, plotted map references showing the locations of the shooters and of their targets and had recorded the soldiers’ accounts of why they had fired. He provided a vivid account of interviewing the soldiers one by one, as he sat in the back of an armoured vehicle a few hundred yards from Rossville Street as darkness descended with a map spread out on his lap, writing by the light of a battery-powered lamp.
Loden was handed a type-written document detailing the shots. He agreed that this seemed to be a type-written version of his hand-written account. The Inquiry then produced the handwritten original. Loden looked at the document and said that while the wording was his, the handwriting wasn’t. Whose was it, then, he was asked? It might be General Jackson’s, Loden suggested.
But why would Jackson have painstakingly transcribed his notes more or less immediately after he had written them down? Loden pondered the question for perhaps 20 seconds, then replied: “Well, I cannot answer that question.”
Jackson, recalled to the witness-box, confirmed that the handwriting was his.
Cross-examination revealed that none of the shots described in Jackson’s list conformed to any of the shots which had actually been fired. Some of the trajectories recorded showed bullets passing through brick buildings before finding their targets. None of the locations where uncontested evidence showed the victims had fallen was recorded as such in the map references. It wasn’t that the list contained inaccuracies: from start to finish, it was wrong in every detail.
Jackson had no explanation to offer for any of this. He claimed that he had entirely forgotten having produced the documents when first giving evidence but had now recovered a “vague memory.” On more than 20 occasions, he used phrases along the lines, “I cannot remember,” “I do not recall,” “I am afraid I cannot help you there.”

      Jesus
