Yeah, whenever Irish Nationalists make such wild claims it always turns out to be deluded nonsense !, Come on Nazi boy, what was your grandma's name? When and where did this happen?
As a reasonably frequent English visitor to Ireland, it's incredible how quickly the country has changed. It has traded an embattled and sincerely held national view, for a highly secularised global model. Would the Irish or English people in this video have recognised what their countries had become, much less approved of it?
Check out historian David Lesson name by name research showing they were mostly irish born and it was reviewed by O Halpin and published in Irish Times, check it yrself
Another well done piece. The best historical information contains eyewitness stories so this one is outstanding. Keep up the good work Davy. I look forward to the newest offerings every week.
Dan Breen, at 7:26, reminds me of my old grandfather. But my grandad was a Donegal man but spoke very much like Dan. Breens were, originally, a part of the Ulster Nothern Ui Neil, but lost their land..so that might be the link.
I was working with an old Irish man, he kept calling the boss a Tan. I asked him what it means. He gave me the outline for which I am ever grateful. I’m still learning and this was some years ago. Obviously I started referring to the boss as a Tan..☘️ 🇮🇪 👍🏾
Davy, thank you for this brief but critically important insight into Ireland's history. Ireland should be for the Irish, as is England for the English, France for the French, Germany for the Germans, Italy for Italians, Spain for the Spanish etc. My life-long dream is to see Ireland become united without the imposition of the English.♥
Them tans fired from a lorry at my grandmother and her sister going to school as little girls in Co. Clare, then went up to their mother's house and ransacked the place and ate everything, they're hated to this day in my family anyway. My grandfather was a volunteer in Tipperary. Pity they missed them two
The Black and Tans raided our house often, they came in the middle of the night bayoneted the feather mattresses searched everywhere, threatened my Grandfather. My Grandmother and the children went at dusk over the fields to another village to sleep in a house there, returning in the morning. The Black and Tans arrested Grandfather Grandmother and their young children, suspected of having a safe house for fighters. In the yard of the Garda barracks they threatened to hang him in front of the children. He took out his and Granny’s American passports and showed them so they were released. In the aftermath of the famine, as teenagers they were sent to New York where they met and married, They returned to Ireland with their first child.
@@annaocarroll742 This is so wrong on so many accounts my eyes water at the nonsense. You wrote about Black and Tans, an Garda Síochána all before the famine? What the @#£%?!
Bloody hypocrites! 20% of the Black and Tans were Irish anyway and 80% of the RIC were Irish Catholics. And don't even start me on all those Irish traitors, spies and informers. As an Englishman it seems to me that many Irish do not even understand their own history.
@@WhataboutTRUTH The ‘Tans’, auxiliaries, Ulster Special Constabulary/‘B’ Specials were all fighting for silver, fighting for Westminster, fighting for their King and Country, fighting for Westminster.
As the ex-British Auxiliaries at the start freely admit, they came back from settling the dispute between the Hapsburg cousins in Europe to stand in dire poverty in a bread queue in Birmingham. Of course they’ll take a few shillings to ship over to Ireland to fight the new enemy of the British overclass: a few struggling Irish farmers. You can get hungry men to do anything for the benefit of wealthy people in power. And times haven’t changed.

I can't believe that you just said that. That was exactly what I was thinking while watching him speak. If I was ever asked "Is there one person that you would love to meet and be able to shake their hand, who would it be ?". Dan would be the man. Ironically, the second would be a wonderful Englishman, David Attenborough. What a brave and intelligent man Dan was. I love his straight talking and how he articulated why his views were like they were. In 2024, its very difficult for us to understand the tyranny and theft of dignity that these imposters imposed on the people of this Island. Colonialism is never right and deserves to be rejected & purged. But it takes brave men (like Dan) and women to rise up and put their lives on the line for that to happen. Sadly, its still happening. The Dues and dumb yanks have driven out the poor people in what is now called Israel and Palestine from their homes since 1947 through persecution and aggression. Its no surprise that Ireland does not support these colonialists/terr0r1sts, we have been there.

The biggest lesson of this whole conflict from the introduction of the Home Rule Bill in 1912 to the formation of the Irish Free State in 1922 and eventual Republic is how to grossly mismanage a politcal siuation in every feasible way immaginable by the British. ...
The Home Rule Bill (AKA the Government of Ireland Act 1914) was given the RA on 18th Sept 1914 (not 1912) which was followed in the same afternoon by the Suspensory Act (suspending the Home Rule Act) also on 18th Sept 1914.
MAKES ONE WONDER WHAT ALL THE FIGHTING WAS ABOUT,AND WAS IT WORTH ALL THE LIVES LOST IN THE STRUGGLE FOR INDEPENDENCE.A LITTLE OVER A CENTURY LATER THE COUNTRY SO HARD FOUGHT FOR HAS BEING SOLD DOWN THE RIVER BY SELF SERVING GOVTS, MORE INTRESTED IN MAINTAINING THEIR OWN WEALTH AND POSITIONS RATHER THAN SERVING THE PEOPLE THAT ELECTED THEM.J/PQ.
And now just immigrate to good old Ireland from all over no one will stop you for fear of being called a bad person cause its all about no borders no countries let all freely walk in to housing benefit and money to live on.The original inhabitants will of course be delighted after all their children don't need housing. It's a fascinating, but tragic topic. I have a foot in both camps, My maternal grandfather was from Doneraille and grew up in the Republican heartland. The family were close neighbours with the Eddery family. My paternal grandfather was an English WW1 veteran, a former Warrant Officer, who signed up for RIC service in Ireland He had an Irish Catholic wife. Something that was not pointed out in this documentary, was that there were a lot of Irish WW1 veterans in the Black & Tans too, both Catholic and Protestant. They were hard times and people needed the money. When independence was declared, my paternal grandfather transferred to the Free State Army, and found himself happily serving alongside former IRA men, who he described as fine soldiers. My maternal grandfather joined the Free State army, but was told to get out of Ireland by the IRA, as the Free State Army was quite keen on eradicating the IRA too, who, by that stage, had effectively won the war, but didn't want to stop fighting. He left Ireland and joined the British Army, where he served from the 20s in India through WW2. As the great Flann O'Brien said, 'It is an insoluble pancake' Nothing is quite as black and white (or tan) as some people make it out to be.
I was going question your comment but then stopped and thought about it more..... You know what, there probably was good people on both sides. Keep in mind that these devils (the black & tans) were more like Vinny Byrne than they were to their commanding officers. They like Vinny were soldiers and just following orders. However, we all know about the horrific reprisals that they executed on innocent civilians which kind of lessons that argument. But... You could argue that, once again it was their hierarchy that was to blame for not controlling their foot soldiers. However, one overriding fact cannot be avoided. These "soldiers" were in our country, killing our people and you know why ? Just because they could. i.e. they were more powerful at that point in time. Thankfully, in 2024 with the demise of the British economy following their genius decision to leave the largest trading block in the World, Ireland will not be subjected to that kind of subjugation in the next 100 years by our neighbours. Karma ! Oh the irony of it, a United Ireland is in-evitable in the next 20 years. Not because of force but because the dumb Brits voted to leave the EU. Their economy is going down the drain and people on this Island who live in the 6 counties will use their noggins and vote to join the EU. In conclusion, I agree with you. You do indeed have bigger problems to contend with. Good luck with that !
@@creekyknee You make a valid point. In every war or conflict every soldier is directed by his own moral compass. In Co.Cork Colonel Hudson of the 1st Kings Liverpool Regiment literally saved the lives of many IRA prisoners from vengeful members of the Crown Forces. Tom Barry described him as a "gentleman". It was soldiers from the Welch Regiment that helped Ernie O'Malley and others escape from Kilmainham Jail in Dublin. Ernie O'Malley was captured in Co.Kilkenny by the Auxiliaries under the alias "Bernard Stewart" . If his true identity had been established he would have literally faced the hangman. When General Lucas was allowed to escape by the IRA he gave numerous interviews to the British press and stated that and I quote verbatim "I was treated as a gentleman by gentlemen". Sean McEoin carried out a successful ambush against members of "M" Coy Auxiliaries at Clonfin in Co. Longford in early February 1921. His unit killed 4 Auxiliaries and several were wounded. Sean McEoin was chivalrous to the defeated Auxiliaries and helped the wounded. Sean McEoin was later captured in Mullingar,Co.Westmeath by soldiers from the East Yorkshire Regiment. Later at Sean McEoin's trial several of the Auxiliaries that he ambushed attended and gave evidence of his fair treatment and battlefield etiquette. Not every member of the Crown Forces had horns and a tail!
I’ve seen most of these interviews, but you did a great job of weaving them together. Tom Barry is the most prophetic - that interview had to be from the 70’s, but he undstood the dynamics of the island, history and the Irish people. He is right- there will never be peace until the British leave all of Ireland….
I had a friend who was a Protestant registered nurse who lived in Belfast throughout the 'Troubles' of the 60s-80s. He told me of seeing obituaries in the papers of people he knew that were innocent and unconnected with either side, having been abducted and murdered. He migrated to Australia, and he told me of an incident where years later, one of his neighbours' kids knocked on his door wearing a balaclava. He told me that when he opened the door he thought a black and tan had come to kill him!! He felt a surge of pure terror go right through him, as he was taken back to that time. He was so terrified that he almost urinated, and for hours, he couldn't stop trembling. The black and tans had almost unlimited powers and could arrest and hold you, indefinately, on a suspicion or what an RIC informant had thought you had said!! Terrible times!!
@johnnotrealname8168 No. To you son, it wouldn't, as your response clearly proves, you have never had to live or experience such terror! But to him - who lived during those terrible times IN that society - it DID, as those traumatic experiences back then still affected him deeply!!
@@tim7052 I don't get that, if he was living in Australia why would he think a one of group people who had been disbanded at least 60 years earlier was knocking on his door and come to kill him, by definition most of the B&T's would no even be alive by that time.

I'm half Scottish and half Italian, with an Irish great grandmother from Blackwatertown in Co. Armagh. During WW2 my Italian grandfather took part in the invasion and occupation on Yugoslavia, and he used to tell me about the fierce anti-guerrilla tactics employed by the Italian troops fighting Tito's partisans. The country had degenerated into a bloody civil war, with Yugoslav Serb Royalists fighting the Germans, the Croatian collaborationist Ustase, while collaborating with the Italians (and later with the Germans). Executions and reprisals were the norm, but my grandfather, who was a Sergeant Major in the Italian infantry, hated it. He used to say that it was one thing to kill in combat, but it was horrible to be in a firing squad. After telling me these stories he always had tears in his eyes, he came from a farming family exactly like the people he was fighting and who, in his opinion, had all the rights to fight the invaders and occupiers. He wasn't a faint-hearted man, he joined the Italian riot control police in 1945 (the Celere police troops), but he still cried when he recalled some of the worst things he witnessed in Yugoslavia...and he never told me all the details.

Fascinating upload!! The interview with Tom Barry where you can see his hearing aid is from the documentary "Curious Journey" by Kenneth Griffith. Kenneth was a Welsh actor and had such sympathy for his Celtic cousins. The documentary "Curious Journey" also featured various interviews with Irish veterans of the Revolutionary period both men and women including David Nelligan who was Michael Collins spy in Dublin Castle. Like Tom Barry, David Nelligan would write a memoir "The Spy In the Castle". David's reputation would be tarnished as he was accused of torturing Anti Treaty IRA prisoners in Co.Kerry during the Irish Civil War. Kenneth Griffith also wrote an excellent book titled "Ireland's Unfinished Revolution" which was the type written words of his interviews with various veterans of the 1916 Easter Rising, Irish War of Independence and Irish Civil War of both men and women in "Curious Journey". Kenneth also made a great documentary about Michael Collins titled "Hang Up Your Brightest Colours" (a phrase from George Bernard Shaw). Kenneth was in the movie "Wild Geese" with Roger Moore and Richard Harris. He had a lengthy film and TV career. He also made great documentaries about the Boer War and Anglo-Zulu War for the BBC.Hope this is helpful. Cheers.

The Boers. Interesting comments, they were not exactly known for their kindness! They signed the peace and got back onboard. General Smuts was the best Imperial General of his time. Smuts Barracks in West Berlin was next to Spandau Prison and home to Rudolf Hess.
This is in my opinion a cleaned up version of the black and tans. My information to further from those volunteers featured here, when they ran out of volunteers they sought volunteers from prisons. (In Scotland too) The prisoners were offered their freedom on the conditions that they went to Ireland and beat the you know out of the irish. They readily excepted their freedom. Well not every Black & Tan had horns and a tail. Some must have been ok as they stayed behind and married local women. They were not interfered with by any former enemies in the IRA. I'm 1/4 Irish (Catholic from Derry) and confused by the command structure of the RUC/RIC. Were they British army in non-British uniforms? Or were they domestic Protestants that were organized on semi-military lines?
Ruc and ric are different RIC were the police in Ireland the black and tans were a branch of RIC but didn't take orders from police or military they ran themselves Mostly recruiting from britian with a lot of ex ww1 vets some prisoners and some from the protestant cummunity in dublin.
I had two great uncles who, having survived the trenches in France, came back to Manchester, and finding it was not in fact a country fit for heroes joined the Black and Tans for another punch up! Interesting video.
Coincidentally a lot of IRA were veterans of WW1 also. Tom Barry for example in these interviews was the most successful IRA Field Commander against the British during the conflict. He served with the Royal Field Artillery in the Middle East during WW1. There was 5 IRA men who had been decorated for bravery in WW1 including a Victoria Cross recipient who attended Buckingham Palace in June 1919 with other VC Winners for a special event for George V. Director of Training for the IRA at GHQ in Dublin was Emmet Dalton who as a Lieutenant serving with the 9th Bn Royal Dublin Fusiliers was awarded the Military Cross for bravery at Guinchy in September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme.
So many survivors from WW1 made the same choice, hardened by their experiences in conflict and seeking to obtain a living wage in the absence of political support and gratitude that they experienced upon returning home. Ex-officers went to the Auxiliaries and other ranks to the Black and Tans.

For an overall view of the conflict I would recommend "The Irish War of Independence" by Michael Hopkinson. Also "The British Campaign in Ireland 1919-1921" by Charles Townsend. A couple of IRA men wrote memoirs about their experiences in the conflict which I would highly recommend. Tom Barry "Guerilla Day's In Ireland". Dan Breen "My Fight For Irish Freedom". Ernie O'Malley "On Another Man's Wound". There is also some good movies set during the turbulent time. The best would probably be "The Wind That Shakes The Barley" starring Cillian Murphy who has just been Oscar nominated for the movie "Offenheimer" and Liam Cunningham from "Game of Thrones" fame. The movie "Michael Collins" is a good movie about the Revolutionary leader and stars Liam Neeson,Julia Robert's,Brendan Gleeson and Aidan Quinn. There is a very good Black & white movie from the 1950's called "Shake Hands With The Devil" starring James Cagney. Hope this is helpful.
This is really interesting hearing from both IRA and the Black and Tans. Can anyone suggest some books to learn more about this time period more from the Irish perspective?
Please tell me John, when Ireland was ever a "united" country ? Answer.....only ONCE in history....when it was an integral part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Apart from that period, Ireland has NEVER been one united country (unlike Scotland and England who had countless Kings, Queens and rulers). The modern day Republic has done brilliantly to remove much of the influence and power of the corrupt Roman Catholic Church ,but to achieve a "United Ireland" the politicians in the Republic need to bin Varadkar and Sinn Fein. Not a cat in hells chance 1.5 million Protestants would vote to merge with these guys. Varadkar hates the UK, and as for Sinn Fein.......
My great grandparents were from Galway, they were loyal to the British crown, I believe my great grandfather was in the British army and moved to England after the revolution. Nothing is black & white, but very complexed.
Many Irish served in the British Army and Navy. Most of Wellington's s close personal both in India and the Napoleonic Wars were Irish, both Protestant and Catholic. He always felt comfortable around his countrymen. My grandad's older brothers, all Donegal Catholics, died in the First World War fighting for Britain.
I grew up in a midlands town where most of the premises were owned by an English Lord. When 99 year leases ended his decendants wanted those homes sold so they could pocket the dirty money. The British rule continued on for many generations. X

I have been to the Military Archives,Cathal Brugha Barracks,Dublin and to the National Archives,Kew,Surrey,UK. I have also visited Regimental Museums and libraries etc throughout the Republic of Irelabd and UK. That the Black & Tans were prisoners let out of jails is an urban myth that as you can see still gathers traction today. They were simply former soldiers who had gone through the worst conflict the world had seen up that date in human history. They certainly did not come back to a "country fit for heroes" as PM David Lloyd George promised but to unemployment and poverty. One can understand the financial incentive for these soldiers joining the RIC. However in Ireland they along with other elements of the Crown Forces committed war crimes and would be recognised as such by a UN Charter today. Not one historian either Irish or British such as T Ryle Dwyer,Padraig Og O Ruairc,David Leeson,Charles Townsend,Michael Hopkinson has ever made the erroneous claim that they were prisoners let out of jail.

I love his straight talking and how he articulated why his views were like they were. In 2024, its very difficult for us to understand the tyranny and theft of dignity that these imposters imposed on the people of this Island.

I interviewed my antie of 93 years we talked about Black and Tans- and my mum - she blamed Churchill for deliberately taking prisoners from Uk jails giving them a uniform to kill the Irish ☘️
My mother was born 1922 used to tell me about the burning of cork and her grandmother had a safe house for the IRA. The tans came one day and killed one of her sons. She was no fan of Churchill......never forget the history. Move on but don't assume anything has really changed in the relationship with England
@@jcoker423 read the telegraph of late on Ireland if you think anything has changed with England
@@jcoker423 you don't sound very Irish to me. The baloney pun is pathetic
@@jcoker423 you should have listened to them. The telegraph wrote on Ireland a few days ago and was basically hinting that England should reinvade Ireland as they see that a united Ireland poses a security threat to the UK. It's not me whose living in the past. That is the same old empire rhetoric voiced just in the past few days by the English media. We need to remember and not forget. You are dismissive of history and that's a grave mistake. The history handed down from generation to generation in families is the primary source of a national identity. Your seeking to trash and eradicate that is is a regrettable if not sinister instinct in you. Your voice sounds intolerant and of the old empire.
@@jcoker423 I know exactly what is happening in Ireland now. The history held in families is very valuable. You should listen to your relatives more. The telegraph identified a united Ireland as a security threat to England a few days ago. Its the same old empire voice. Nothing changes. You reject family historical tradition at your peril.

Interesting comments, they were not exactly known for their kindness!
They signed the peace and got back onboard.
General Smuts was the best Imperial General of his time.

Their were reports of rapes and other crimes. My pregnant great grand mother was hit across the face by a group of black and tans who had surrounded my grandmother, she was only 6 and seeking twigs to start their fire. She was a little over the curfew time (in Dublin city)
My great grandmother lost her baby that night.
There was no shortage of men for either the Black & Tans or Auxiliaries. That some were left out prison is an urban myth that still gathers traction today. I have reserached this conflict for over 20 years. By the way there was no Black & Tans deployed in Dublin City itself. The Crown Forces in the Irish metropolis were the DMP(Dublin Metropolitan Police),British Army and Auxiliaries.
@@johnroche7541 “urban myth” ? I seen an documentaries and interviews many years ago (and more recent ) on this subject and contrary to your “research” there was an offer put to prisoners. And as for no black and tans in Dublin, that’s how my grandmothers account related and described them to me. From a six year old point of view and being actually living through their occupation has more weight and creditability to me than second hand “research” years after the fact.
“The crown forces were british army and auxiliaries in Dublin” well we know that, and we just saw some being interviewed! Each told to halt the disruptions the irish were making to the system , at any cost. One b&t fellow here related that with glee.
@@lilliankeane5731 Thank you for your reply. I am an ex soldier but now I am a genealogist but military research is my forte. I have reserached the Irish War of Independence for over 20 years. I have been to the relevant archives in Dublin(Military Archives,Cathal Brugha Barracks) and National Archives at Kew,Surrey,UK. It is complete nonsense that there was prisoners let out of British prisons to join the notorious Black & Tans and Auxiliaries. A complete urban myth without any foundation. You state your grandmother lived through the occupation but by grandfather fought against that occupation. He served with the British Army in WW1 and literally fought against the British Army,RIC,Black & Tans and Auxiliaries in Co Kerry during the Irish War of Independence. When I watched these interviews I replied in the comment section because I was able to identify the IRA Volunteer at 2.56-3.04 as he was a comrade of my grandfather. His name is not given in these interviews. If you have the time I suggest you read my lengthy reply which establishes my pedigree.
@@johnroche7541 thank you for your reply, you are as i suspected. You say you have ‘researched’ but even you must surely know that not all facts are recorded for prosperity. So regardless of how long your researched for or where you researched … merely because you didn’t locate any evidence, didn’t mean it didn’t happen. I too had relatives that fought in ww1 for the british. Three great uncles (my grandmothers older brothers in fact)
Allow me the favour to inform you further of the circumstance of my great grand mother having a miscarriage.
She was attempting to protect her daughter from british forces who had surrounded her and was intimidatingly questioning her far too vigorously.
To the extent of pushing her around. Bearing in mind she was six years old. A child. She described them as black & tans. Fact.
An account not found in your “research” or recorded in military archives. But actually happened, you see?
My great grand mother lost her baby that night. These facts didn’t bear a mention from you. That’s sad.
I reiterate that british man did speak about sabotaging the Irish people of food etc with glee. Which presses my point further. Your grandfathers being a comrade of the man interviewed has no bearing on my grandmothers story.
As for your “pedigree” my advice stands for any subject, i suggest you never stop learning. Remain open minded, remember you don’t know everything. Arrogance and ignorance kill knowledge. Not all accounts / facts will be recorded. Bearing in mind, the tragic history I related here.
@@colinirvine3576 Could you please clarify exactly the point you are making. By the way I was the person who kindly gave you the information in relation to your previous post in relation to Tom Barry. The aforementioned emphasises my pedigree.
My great unle was in the Black and Tans , not something I’m proud of, he died in the 1950s before I was born, he had fought in the first war, I would have liked to have had a chat with him
Well not every Black & Tan had horns and a tail. Some must have been ok as they stayed behind and married local women. They were not interfered with by any former enemies in the IRA. For example William Hill was only 16 when serving as a RIC Constable in Co.Cork and was well liked. You guessed it. He is the same William Hill that founded the bookmakers of the same name.

Or were they domestic Protestants that were organized on semi-military lines?
Ruc and ric are different

Nobody gives a toss about yer uncles.
So many survivors from WW1 made the same choice, hardened by their experiences in conflict and
seeking to obtain a living wage in the absence of political support and gratitude that they
experienced upon returning home. Ex-officers went to the Auxiliaries and other ranks to the Black
and Tans.

Any good books someone could suggest on the era? Preferably from the Irish point of view?
Thank you 👍

Wonderful Spirit. Tom Barry!

Many Irish served in the British Army and Navy. Most of Wellington's s close personal both in India and the Napoleonic Wars were Irish, both Protestant and Catholic. There's a great channel that let's war stories of people and mostly vets either alive or past that talk about their accounts they went through and tell their stories regardless of what one feels about (There were at least two that were not explained or vetted well that makes one think they were fake tbh). The is Battles and Beers: War Stories if one is interested.
We need to hear the accounts of the personal who served their side of the said conflict regardless if we agree or not around the matter to know about them in a fair and honest light and learn from them. I find listen to both sides who are fighting in a ongoing conflict or past one telling their views on something gives us something to improve ourselves in the future for the betterment of mankind.
Hopefully more stories from vets from both sides of the Irish wars will be shown some day. Peace between brothers.
