Im a unionist from Northern Ireland and would like to say thank you for sharing your story. I don’t think the country of Northern Ireland will ever move forward together as it is the parents that raise their kids to hate the other side from a very young age. Personally I hate living here. I just hope some day both sides can leave the past in the past and move forward to create peace and happiness for both sides.

Thank goodness our community have had the mature good sense and understanding to see past someone's religious denomination...
Born In Dublin 72, I remember the atmosphere, our working class suburbs were full of Provo activity, especially during hunger strike, black flags hung everywhere
Unfortunately, armed struggle has done nothing but killed men, women and children and imprisoned men and women. I understand how easy it was to get caught up in wanting to fight for your freedom and country, but everyone was just disposable on both sides to the paramilitary groups. And to think that not much has changed in NI since the 1980s is just extremely disappointing and sad..but it seems like it is Irish history, doesn't it? I hope to see a united country and one where religion does not define a person...
It takes courage to change.Shane opens his heart and soul gives a honest account of his life narrative a child born into the troubles. He certainly did some awful things but he attempts to explain how and why in his own understanding of the dirty war.
I learnt a lot the troubles from a young Irish lad, who moved away from it, met him at college.. He told me about when he was between 6 or 7 and he was a corner shop, he saw guy getting shot in the back..
Interesting seeing a UVF murial on the intro, reminds me of a time in the USA when I was talking to some men in a bar who said they were Irish American and supported the Reuplicans, I'm not saying they were clueless but one had recently gotten a UVF tattoo complete with the red hand logo. I didnt have the heart to tell him they were a Loyalist group and often wonder if he ever found out.

I grew up in Northern Ireland as a Catholic from 1970-2000 then i emigrated. The IRA were wrong. The bombing campaign and armed struggle were wrong and cannot be morally justified. So many innocent people were killed. I realize why they started, as a response to the conditions at the time and I understand the gunmen on both sides, but no matter what way you slice it, it was just just wrong.
The way the British treated the Irish can totally justify an armed campaign. The way the campaign went became morally wrong, but there was nothing wrong about an armed campaign from the getgo.

How is victims would view this I don’t know, but I applaud him for making this video. I wish peace to all the people of The Island of Ireland and no return to dark times.
A very good example of the trauma of causing death and destruction. I have been impressed by the number of IRA explaining how difficult the pain of knowing their own guilt
I was born into a very protestant home and my dad was taken prisoner by the IRA whilst they used his car to carry out an operation and he never recovered from the trauma BUT I say without hesitation that the protestant people from the 1920s to the 1960s should have done more to recognise the outrageous discrimination against people who simply wanted to be Irish. The roles will be reversed when a United Ireland comes which it will before 2030 and the protestants will then know what it is like to be in such a minority - I have no doubt there will be anarchy in loyalist areas when this inevitably and democratically happens.
When the Irish Free State was founded, it was founded with rampant Catholicism at its core. Burnings and attacks on Protestant homes was common in rural areas during the 1920s throughout the Free State with IRA attacks continuing in the North. This created a 'cold war' between north and south...A united Ireland is meaningless in today's context as both the UK and Republic of Ireland and mere economic zones, overwhelmed with 'non-islanders' and run by the same Globalists.

Well it moved me , i threw up at his wonderful conversation but no thought of managing to live with the murder he brought to the world , a good man would have killed himself once he realised what he had done .
I was born in Derry too. The "problem" of the name, if this man is honest, occurs only when one is away from "home". EVERYBODY in Derry calls it by the shortened version. I was born into a home with parents who didn't teach us that religion was something to beat our neighbor with who worshipped in another way!! The British army entered Ireland at the behest of the Nationalist community & they only became the bad guys to Nationalists when they realised it was unfair to only search Loyalist communities & drive past barricades leading to Nationalist communities where guns & bombs were being gathered up. The R.U.C. was not a protestant police force. Put simply any Catholic who tried to join was shot! We lived in the U.S.A. for half our lives & there is simply NO comparison to the civil rights abuses that were perpetrated on the African-American communities, especially in the southern states. We all know about "Bloody Sunday" but never, "Bloody Friday" when almost 30 bombs were planted by the I.R.A., just as schools were getting out. One man was asked to "identify his son" & when he went to do so was handed a bent signet ring, the ONLY thing left of his son. He talks of armed struggle & "war". It wasn't war, as paramilitaries wear regular clothes & can't be identified as the enemy. You can all hear what a "brave boy" he was, destroying his own city & slaughtering his fellow countrymen...........His turn around didn't come quickly enough for those whom he murdered. I'd like to see him try writing a letter of apology to them. You may hear of the I.R.A. only killing drug dealers now & think that they're doing the community a service. Not so. Other drug dealers are impinging on "their" territory &, so, they have to be killed!! A woman saw a comment I'd written (2 weeks ago) of how lovely it was to have normal life back. She was a Roman Catholic from the Bogside in Derry, like the monster in this video. She wrote, "It may have changed for you but not for anyone living in a Republican stronghold. Our kids have their kneecaps shot out for the smallest of offences but especially if they don't buy drugs from the I.R.A. We get a call to actually bring our own children to be "punished", if we don't, they come to get them at home & kill them in front of us". Now for a strange ending to this very strange "documentary". Despite "the troubles", Northern Ireland usually came near the top or held the top spot for the "safest place to vacation in Europe". Despite the bombs in certain "strongholds", minor crime was not & is not a big issue in N. Ireland. We were blessed to live in a beautiful country & simply need to give peace a decent chance!
100%. We need more people like him on both sides to tell their story.. and how futile and wrong it was. Now? Its the politicians that keep us separated.
But they wish too that is what republican violence was all about and even now with peace they still want to force the Unionists into a country that they do not want
It's not an issue of a country imposing it's dominance. It's an issue of humanity being a completely failed experiment. What occupies these countries? People. Every powerful nation got powerful by brutally and systematically eliminating all perceived enemies and "undesirables". Undesirables are defined subjectively, and can vary according to the whim of whatever tyrant happens to be in charge. As long there are humans, there will always be cruelty and mistreatment. It's just different varieties according to the locale
All evil killers turn to Bible bashing. Myra Hindley,Rose West. They think it will make people think, well he was a bastard but he's turned to God. The damage has been done.I could never forgive anyone that murdered members of my family.

I was born in the South ,in Kerry, and never went to o the North.I've been all over America, coast to coast, and across Canada from Montreal to Vancouver and have never set foot in Belfast or Derry. When I was a teenager in the 1970''s ,everynight on the RTE News were stories of shootings and bombings in the North. To us it became like a foreign country as we never had the experiences of the people in the North.Plus we had a very different accent which made us feel ,even though they were Irish , that they were not Irish like we were. I plan on visiting Ireland in 2025 and will be finally going to Belfast and Derry.I feel like I owe them a visit. Its been long enough . I plan on
An inspirational film well narrated this is a lesson to us all that it can be done, through adversity and political courage it can happen, just a shame it will not happen in Israel and Palestine.
Child soldiers are below 14, though all my uncles were to the point their mama would have had to call cops if they’d been too determined to fight with her below that age. To say you take no responsibility for yourself because you weren’t middle aged yet is just excuses. No hard feelings, but don’t feel the need to disrespect your own agency to be accepted. It’s a respectable cause, but we are all glad it’s being pursued politically now.

Whatever happened to him also happened to southern Irish protestants in the south of Ireland,no say, intimidation, ethnically cleansed from their homes, there is always two sides to every story, wake up
So true 30% of southern irelands population was unionist and protestant. And now it is less than 2% explain that??? Nobody seems to be talking about it
Just to clarify this point, that is factually untrue (for the few people that may read it) While there was a marked decrease in the population of Protestants in what would become the Republic of Ireland it was not due to government or paramilitary discrimination post Anglo-Irish Treaty. As one example of this mixed marriages in the pre Free State were common, 15% of Protestant men married Catholics with purportedly 4/5 raising Catholic children. Also for stats on Protestantism pre Free State; 10% of the population of the 26 were Protestant around 1900, declining to a low of 3% in the 1990s. The population of Protestants now has grown to 4% as of the 2011 census. While there is a substantial reduction of Protestants halving of their numbers is a large reduction again this can be attributed to a variety of aspects such as the British government representatives whether army auxiliary constabulary or other civil service would most likely follow their employers out of the Free State as well as given that it can be fairly assumed Protestants tended to have stronger connections to U.K. as well as being a driving force behind industry pre 1920. There are 100% instances of violence committed against Protestants or British sympathisers as well as some instances of marginalisation but other important factors include the migrations of cultural groups across the border in Ireland. This is despicable and should be condemned in the strongest degree. On the flipside Ireland’s first and fourth Presidents were Protestant, in my own constituency in Ulster we have Protestant Teachta Dala, though their religion is immaterial only that I went googling about them it turns out this self professed republican (supporter of the values of a Republic not to be confused with the nationalist Republicans) is of Unionist stock. The scars of sectarianism are much lessened south of the border, that’s not to pretend they don’t exist, they definitely do. But by in large we have managed to lessen the religious emphasis of the past to the point the old labels are almost meaningless and hopefully the same will happen to Northern Ireland. I am happy to engage with anyone willing to fruitfully converse on these areas, especially as I become more reflective on the past as fears of the hardening of the border I live near grows.
It saddens me when I see the language used on vids like these. As an ex British soldier who served many times in the province, I really do believe, for there to peace, the hate has got to stop....then we can all move on and have a United Ireland and a friendly neighbour

Well half true, Britain isn't an empire using the world colonies and Ireland as slaves for resources anymore, instead each international territory in our modern world, today, gets their own democratic government with the military support and finical benefit of being legally considered a British oversea's territory with of course mutually sharing the increased tax's of from the British mainland and the international mainland itself - so is the same with Northern Ireland and in fact, Northern Ireland actually has quite a few more legal freedoms than the average British person in Scotland, England or Wales, the first I know is that the people of Northern Ireland actually is legally allowed to defend themselves (meaning they can actually purchase objects with the intent of harm) and even legally purchase a pistol firearm! So yes Northern Ireland is under 'British Rule' but it's not what it sounds and as we've learned from the past, the relationship with the rest of the UK with Northern Ireland as stated is mutually beneficial nowadays.

I don’t think the country of Northern Ireland will ever move forward together as it is the parents that raise their kids to hate the other side from a very young age.
Personally I hate living here. I just hope some day both sides can leave the past in the past and move forward to create peace and happiness for both sides.
trailerparkboys How about you start by stopping to call yourself a unionist.
Giro Azzolini I am a unionist. There’s a difference between being a unionist/nationalist and a loyalist/republican. I am what I am as I was born in to it. I don’t hate nationalism and I am not a bigot.
EMB 2017 That’s easy said when you have been free from oppressive rule by the British government since 1922.
There cant be "sides" and peace, just one Ireland will be the only thing that ever brings peace....the north is an English outpost waiting for the opportune time.
@@jiroyoshida6617 definitely shows your ignorance about Northern Ireland, most unionist identity as that because of cultural reasons not political ones, plenty of unionists don't vote because politically they disagree with the opinions of the DUP/UUP/TUV (the three biggest unionist parties) and have more in common with SDLP.
“A person is, among all else, a material thing, easily torn and not easily mended.” “It wasn't only wickedness and scheming that made people unhappy, it was confusion and misunderstanding; above all, it was the failure to grasp the simple truth that other people are as real as you.”
This was beautiful. Thank you.
All people, especially young people, need to be given an offramp from radicalism and violence. If they aren't afforded a real opportunity to be forgiven and accepted, there's no incentive to ever change. I'm so glad you changed, sir.
i’m glad he’s here to speak, it’s sad some people don’t know how to listen
Perhaps he needed to live the life he lived to come to his conclusions. What a waste his early years were. With people as passionate, driven and intelligent as him he could of been an Irish Martin Luther. Some people will say he should be locked up for life and their opinion would carry weight, but who better to teach the young of Ireland the way forward than this man?
I'm glad the troubles are over I hope the sides can get along now and drink together and stop all the hatred it will take generations but it will happen I'm glad there is peace god bless you all
You hit the nail on the head when you said God bless you all. Answer me this, why would God bless anyone now and not when innocent people were being blown to smithereens? When we finally remove this stupid, illogical belief, peace might have a chance. Really, try to apply some logic. The Catholics were fighting the Protestants and the Protestants were fighting the Catholics, who was God blessing then?

It's called being a Human Being.
Thank God I grew up in a town where Protestants and Roman Catholics grew up and were deep and sincere friends. Ecumenism and 'cross-community' relations have always been strong, business owner and customer, priest and minister, Billy and Seán, Siobhán and Sadie...... Thank goodness our community have had the mature good sense and understanding to see past someone's religious denomination...
When was it ever truly a matter of religion?
Great film. But the comments here give me the impression we still have a long way to go.

Civilians should never ever be killed

Even a wild dog can be tamed with the passage of time.
Good luck Mr Shane Paul o Doherty you have travelled a long and dangerous path in so many ways and you deserve peace

So true 30% of southern irelands population was unionist and protestant. And now it is less than 2% explain that??? Nobody seems to be talking about it
I didn't know that.
Thank you!

@@britopia1341 That's what they were originally for.
Invisible Man I know that. It’s just that when I looked at a map of segregation I thought it showed a Catholic majority inside the city walls.
@@britopia1341 No wait, you're right. There is a Catholic majority there. It does seem like that's the character of the division, though.
Honest outlook of an volunteer, brave individual, good description of the terrors we endured, but also remorseful after the troubles we inflicted, there's two sides to every story and I think he did OK, but did loyalist learn anything, unfortunately NOT
The one thing that doesn't make sense is, it seems like the Protestants just snapped one day what caused that ?
Provided this is a true story. It's quite humbling that this man was able to turn his life around and bring an end to the violence. It must be very difficult to grow up after experiencing such a difficult childhood
Protestants of Northern Ireland are one and the same as their evangelical brethren in the USA. Racist religious bigots who revel in hatred and violence.
@@benjijarman What has your comment to do with the original entry by Marco?
@@iansoutryer3189 This is social media mate. Provided I don't fall foul of their guidelines I can't comment anything I like. If you don't like it ignore it.
@@iansoutryer3189 Also, I saw a comment of yours claiming the EU is autocratic. How so? Do you know the meaning of 'autocracy'? How does it apply to an economic community of states of which none of them even have an autocratic leader?
Why is there a loyalists mural at the start when it's about ira
I'm here thanks to my dad being on the run in the early 70s. Met my mother in Limerick and hey bingo here I am .he was in the IRA
That's nothing to be proud of, more to be ashamed of.
@@mrsuperger5429 he didn't say he was proud of it
How can I thank you Journeyman Pictures for making A Former IRA Child Bomber Tells His Story ????
True Irish man ! Need more of you !!
I married a local lassie from Northern Ireland and I learned a lot about prodistants and Catholics my great grandparents are from co wexford and I lived in Northern Ireland for 20years I've got no time for the British army I've had guns at my head and been threatened but God bless you all over in Ireland north and south ❤️ from me in England ❤️ I'm a born again Christian ✝️
You do not win with the bomb and gun. As ex soldier I agree with this man and accept his apology for killing my friends. Anyone who committed murder on all sides should do the same.
The ego in this fella. Sounds like he single handedly started the war then single handedly started the peace process. Fair play he had an involvement with the peace process but he directly suggests that others took his words and ran with it... Emphasizing his words were the beginning.
"I was the first voice" to call off the war. Not John Hume no Paul Shane shame?
Totally agree with you!! Full of himself, he thought he was a "hero"and still thinks so. Just seeking attention as usual. Spits at the face of former republicans as well, must be living abroad.
He could have never taken part in the peace process as he was in jail. Freed thanks to the GFA by the way. Megalomaniac attention seeker.
what an incredible story
30 life sentences and 20 years.... how was he released ?
The good friday agreement. Prisoners from both sides were released
