Fun story: I have a childhood friend. Our mothers are friends, and we've known each other almost since birth. We went to different schools and such, so we didn't see each other often (still don't), but our friendship has adjusted to accommodate it, and when we do see each other it's really nice. Funny story, a long time ago in the depths of the closet, I was leaving my "bestie"s house and said "I love you" as I left because we said it all the time and that's definitely not gay, but this time she didn't say it back. Within 2 minutes of leaving I get an essay of a message from her saying how she was sorry she didn't say it back, but she just closed the door too quickly and she wanted me to know she loves me and it was just an accident and felt bad. Me looking back at my ‘best friend’ when I was 14-15 year old, who used to say I love you to each other all the time. We sent long texts like 9/10 nights, describing in detail how much we loved and cared about each other. The nights it didn’t happen the other person had like fallen asleep before or been in a rush and sort of had to apologise for not doing it. She wrote poetry about how important I was to her and gave it to me to read. My ‘besti’ who texted me like essays and atleast like 40-80 texts per day, every day. From waking up to literally falling asleep, only taking breaks to eat. Even though we saw each other in school most days. I’m trans (mtf). I had a longtime best friend throughout high school, and we looked pretty similar. We were frequently mistaken for brothers, sisters, brother and sister, sister and brother, cousins, etc (we were both AMAB and had long hair) after I came out as trans we actually dated for about a year and the familial confusion continued. After we split apart she came out as trans too.
I actually had the reverse happen once. My cousin has a little girl and one day we went shopping for her at a children's clothing store. This woman came up to us and began telling us how cute "our" daughter was. She was so kind and we didn't want to discourage her moment so we didn't tell her.

Fun story: I have a childhood friend. Our mothers are friends, and we've known each other almost since birth. We went to different schools and such, so we didn't see each other often (still don't), but our friendship has adjusted to accommodate it, and when we do see each other it's really nice.
Anyway, when we were both relatively young (Lower primary maybe), we both made a plan to run away to a country that had legalised gay marriage so we could get married and live together, maybe even adopt kids. We'd both not have boyfriends and we'd live together (OMFG I feel so stupid typing this). We haven't talked about it since and it's taken me a long time to figure out that that was probably not entirely straight.
I'm bi (I think, idk. No idea if I like boys, they exist I guess), but I have no idea what sexuality she is.
I feel so stupid, we were both so oblivious yet obvious at the same time. We're still really good friends to this day.

Me looking back at my ‘best friend’ when I was 14-15 year old, who used to say I love you to each other all the time.
We sent long texts like 9/10 nights, describing in detail how much we loved and cared about each other. The nights it didn’t happen the other person had like fallen asleep before or been in a rush and sort of had to apologise for not doing it.
She wrote poetry about how important I was to her and gave it to me to read.
My ‘besti’ who texted me like essays and atleast like 40-80 texts per day, every day. From waking up to literally falling asleep, only taking breaks to eat. Even though we saw each other in school most days.
My ‘friend’ who would demand very very very long hugs, I’m talking minutes long hugs, that would make everyone else around not know what to do because they were so long, everytime we parted ways. Me awkwardly smiling at the other people around. And she hugged no one else that long.
We are talking 3 minutes long, maybe like 9 if it was an particularly long one and no one else was around.
And she pushed for all of the things to get more and more intense in our ‘friendship’, every single time.

Benjamin Figgins you’re right on that front! our modern views on sexuality are completely different to how they were viewed back in the day, and although they’re comparable in some areas, you can’t straight up call someone ‘gay’ and leave it at that. However, getting into a discussion about homosexuality in general/in the ancient times is not something you usually do in your average latin class, so my teacher left it as ‘they’re gay for each other’ and I feel like that got the point across :D

We were frequently mistaken for brothers, sisters, brother and sister, sister and brother, cousins, etc (we were both AMAB and had long hair) after I came out as trans we actually dated for about a year and the familial confusion continued. After we split apart she came out as trans too.
I actually had the reverse happen once. My cousin has a little girl and one day we went shopping for her at a children's clothing store. This woman came up to us and began telling us how cute "our" daughter was. She was so kind and we didn't want to discourage her moment so we didn't tell her.
