omg funny story. So, I was in brownies and for the "sing a song" badge we had to memorize and sing a song. Most of the kids picked like "itsy bitsy spider" or some shit.... I straight up decided I was doing fat bottom girls. Though I had a lot of the words wrong... for example "you made a bag boy out of me." Yea my mom totally told me that the song was about this boy who like, got a job as a bag boy to support this big girl he just loved so much.... good times. "I knew love before I left university" yeeeeea... anyway. So yea, I get up there and belt out this slightly more wholesome version of "Fat Bottom Girls"... got my badge.... the leaders were super pissed at my mom for letting me pick that song though XD I'm just super extra

I literally can't listen to some songs (yesterday, bohemian rhapsody blackbird, don't stop me now, come as you are, nothing else matters etc.) because of all those people who think they're so edgy and not like the others because they listen to that which is kinda ironic because everyone is listening to that for exactly the same reason

the whole "Not like other girls" thing is something I'm still trying to grow out of. I'll sometimes see a girl wearing makeup and revealing clothing and be like "why does she have to be like that, I bet she's super shallow" and then I have to mentally slap myself in the face and remind myself that you shouldn't judge people by how they look. Or sometimes I'll feel bitter because someone else is interested in something that I liked and thought was, like, "my thing", and then I have to mentally slap myself in the face again and remind myself that other people can like what they like.

I'm goth, so although I don't do the whole face stuff completely, I do weird side stuff, like only doing eyeshadow as a thin line or having black light mascara, so I get it? I'm a trans guy, I just like costume makeup, and have been doing it a long time, honestly, jealous. I've never met people really insanely good at makeup, but I also had mostly trans guy friends and it was usually just me who had been into makeup and stuff as a kid.
I used to steal my mom's eye shadow palette and draw on my face with my fingers to make myself look like raven from teen titans as a like 9 y.o. and steal her red lipstick because it was pretty, even if I couldn't wear it in public. I was a gothy from like 7 y.o. and couldn't express it, so doing that stuff made me happy enough.
So I get the whole, like, being able to do the big makeup, and getting really good at it, especially if you wore it every day. I'm slow, but I also have shite eyesight so I have to be so close to the mirror to see that my like eyeliner tool has to almost be horizontal in order for it to not hit the mirror. Mascara's a b!tch if I wanna do that, and if I'm not overly cautious, I can bump slightly, and need to make minor fixes to make it look better.
I want to meet people good at makeup ;; I've only ever had my mom, and no offense to her, but she puts it on in a way that isn't exactly how I prefer it. She puts a bit more pigment of colors that don't need it, while other colors can be too light, but most of the time it's over pigmented imo and same with blush. I might just be picky, but after learning to blush on top of cosplay face paint, I keep my opinion to myself, but like, by proxy have no real makeup people to chill with.
Contouring is soooo fun though lmao.

The irony is that she actually doesn’t use the “I’m not like other girls” mentality (I think I could be wrong) and instead embrace the collective weirdness of girls as a whole. And if you read any of her comics you’ll know she’s obsessed with pumpkin spice. Check it out it’s really good!

There's a comic she has that has someone saying "real girls are" and I think she literally has her little cartoon character press her finger against the other girl's mouth and say, "do you identify as a girl?" and the person nods, "are you a figment of my imagination?" and she shakes her head, "Then congratulations you are a real girl"! I believe confetti is also involved.

While I do think that the people who are very clearly misogynistic need to be taught out of it, I have noticed that a lot of people will, instead of focusing on the issue, tear girls down for talking about even mildly niche interests by claiming that they're only doing it to be "quirky" or to be "not like other girls". It's also becoming common to call girls "quirky" as a put down to delegitimize their ideas and opinions, which 1) should never be how discourse works and 2) is entirely misogynistic as it portrays said girls as 1 dimensional for simply giving input

But now I'm etching out a life in a city, working at a foodtruck and thrifting and taking my ADHD meds and still lusting after random knowledge and I get called ... Quirky? And it's bad? Like, wut?
It's so tiring and you can't win without people thrusting their preconceived misconceptions about who you are upon you and thinking they're fully in the right to do so.
Also, why does it seem like every single damn thing is about sexxxxxxx

This is super important. I got a dinosaur dress a few years ago, because I loved it and I idolize Ms. Frizzle. I didn't wear it for three years, because I was worried people would think I was "trying to be quirky". Then I realized it was silly to be worried that people would think that I care what people think. Not everything that women do outside of mainstream interests is performative. I wore the dress, and sure enough I got a few "wow, she's not like other girls" sarcastic comments. NLOGs are a problem because they are women putting down other women intentionally. If you use the label NLOG to put down other women for just expressing niche interests then that is ironic and hurtful. I would have been happy if we ALL got dinosaur dresses and went out for ice cream. okay, rant over

I was embarrassingly late to grow out of the "not like other girls" phase. Sure, I loved to dress pretty, do my makeup and hair, but instead of going out with friends or doing any activities, I'd just hide away at home. I always held this weird "better than thou" mentality because of my own insecurities.
It wasn't until I was in my mid twenties when I started to have feelings for this amazingly talented woman I knew, and confided in a male friend I was seeing at the time that I really liked her but she intimidated me. It hit me like a ton of bricks. I was too scared to have meaningful relationships with women.

But in between my nlog phase and when I realized I was genderfluid, I realized that like half the female population was like me, and that although I didn't fit the female stereotype in some ways, in other ways I did, and that kind of made me realize that I needed to just accept I was like other people and try to find people like me instead of trying to put myself in a different box than everyone else to raise my own low self-esteem somehow.
P.S. idk if that made sense, sorry!

I just want to throw in that the artist at 11:20 didn’t actually draw that in a “not like other girls” or misogynistic context, it was actually meant to be a statement about how she let her mental health be affected by the fact that celebrities and such on social media got more attention than her despite the amount of work she put into her content, and it included a caption discussing the matter of comparing yourself to others, so I think this piece was taken out of its original context, which is much more positive.
Edit: her account on Insta is @gigis_lab and her art is really good, so I would recommend checking it out!

I definitely had this phase when I was younger where I was edgy and tore people down but the feeling of not being like other women never went away even though I wasn't trying to tear them down anymore or be edgy as I got older and this along with a bunch of other stuff made me realise years later that I'm genderfluid. Like that is definitely not the case for everyone but the intense relief to start living authentically was immense.

i think the entirety of 'I'm not like other girls' comes from feeling ostracized from others and not knowing how to deal with it, and also from the need to feel unique. I feel like there's a particular push in modern society for everyone to stand out, and it creates a lot if unhealthy competition like this. personally my 'not like other girls' phase came out of not having a lot of friends as a young kid and wanting to stand out, but I also later realized that I'm genderfluid so i don't identify as a girl at all anymore, and knowing this now it explains a lot of my feelings during that phase

This whole thing is so funny to me because I’ve always been pretty feminine myself but the one-two punch of this whole not like other girls mindset and the idea that black girls like myself can’t be feminine in the way that white girls are, I’ve had this voice in the back of my head for a really long time like “am I not supposed to be like this? Everybody seems to think that there’s something wrong with this”
I may just be rambling, but it is kind of interesting watching my friends discourage femininity in themselves while I try to find my own. Just a societal disconnect I think about sometimes

Those expectations are real to some degree, at least when you're a teenager. I started wearing heavy makeup every day after a few guys implied that I wasn't hot. It has always really annoyed me how high the expectations for girls are, and that if you want to go against the grain, you really have to fight to do so. I definitely understand why people would want to rebel against that.

I had my "not like other girls" phase in high school, which is I think a common time to have it! That's when people are starting to gain more autonomy and responsibility in their own lives, and that includes taking credit for their habits and pastimes. In my chemical soup of a brain, my phase ABSOLUTELY was born out of insecurity! I got over it by growing up and realizing just how much more fun it was to build people up and get excited over the things we have in common instead of acting as I had been, which was trying to find our differences in order to make myself feel better.

yo fr, that's a personal attack for me lol. i was a "gifted student" all throughout elementary and middle school, and took all honors level classes throughout all of middle school and the first half of high school. i didn't go out of my way to put others down or insinuate that i was better than them, but it did give me a big ego boost and became integral to my self worth. having bad grades on literally anything (even small assignments that didn't matter) crushed me! i ended up getting so stressed and burnt out on all the honors level classes and all the extra work that comes with that, and i somehow made myself feel guilty about it lol. i ended up talking to my cousin about it and she helped me realize that i didn't need all of those honors classes or an advanced diploma at all, and that i could still be successful in life and have the same opportunities regardless. i changed my schedule and got a standard diploma upon graduating. honestly those last 2 years of high school were the most fun i ever had in school because i was able to just chill and take it easy rather than be on a pointless grind just so i could feel good about myself for having academic achievements or whatever. it also helped me realize that i am actually pretty smart and i really do love learning things, but traditional education and school environments just aren't for me. i feel like a lot of "gifted students" can relate to my experience on some level tbh.

  • @Namari12

"I'm not like other girls" is often just a stand-in for "I'm not like *these* girls around me" and "I'm not like the girls I see on television," and as you get older and have new experiences and find other girls that *are* like you, the feeling fades.

    • @maggieburkart907
      @maggieburkart907 3 года назад +1

Yes! It also feels like backlash to the opposite trend of tweens and teens to want to conform themselves to the image of the girls they see on TV. I feel like TV aimed to that demographic sometimes glorifies Mean Girl behavior (flashbacks to girls doing the “What Ever Major Loser” hand thing from Disney Channel), so some of the girls who did fit the image of the girls you saw on TV were also the school bullies. That definitely contributed to me going through my NLOG phase, since it made me associate more popular feminine interests and behavior with the girls who were mean to me in middle school. Once people grow up and out of those kind of coming-of-age insecurities, both the pressure to conform and the equal and opposite pressure to be NLOG fade and people are more comfortable just being themselves. Some of my former middle school bullies are perfectly lovely people now, and I no longer refuse to wear pink or pretend not to like pop music.

I definitely had a pretty strong "not like other girls" phase when I was in middle and high school, to the point I derisively dismissed most girls as "clones". I spent a lot of my younger years feeling ostracized and isolated because I genuinely was very different from a lot of my peers, in interests, personality etc., so it ended up being a way for me to instead gain confidence from my differences. I definitely had the thing of like, hating makeup, dresses, anything pink or girly etc. and to this day I still don't like wearing any of that myself but I'm less actively hateful of it (I mean I'm gay as hell so I love seeing other women get dressed up, I just don't care to do it myself). However I never had the thing of hanging out only with guys and rejecting all female friends, in fact during this phase most of my friends were female, but most of them were social outcasts like me. I've always found myself more easily able to make friends with people who are "different" and often ostracized - so like, people with ADHD, the "ugly" ones, the "weirdos" etc., definitely the kids who would get made fun of in school. I myself wasn't bullied too badly in school especially as I got older, it was more just that people ignored me and didn't really talk to me. I'm a lot more confident now and I don't feel the need to put down other girls to build myself up, but yeah, a lot of the time this mentality definitely starts when girls are made to feel like an "other" and made fun of for not fitting in. They end up aggressively embracing that label in order to protect their own self-esteem, which is why I don't really see it as a bad thing as long as it stays as just a phase and they grow out of it eventually when they mature.
