This is the first time I've ever listened to, "Singularity", by V of BTS. This is my reaction and review.
Thanks to Rachel for requesting the song. She was the first to answer correctly on 'name that tune #4'.

V is on another level singing this live. The man oozes charisma and sensuality.
V is known to a fan of both jazz and neo soul so this song was right up his alley.
The song Singularity was written after RM read the book "The Singularity is Near. I haven't read it but I think the book is about the merging of human and Artificial intelligence. The book is not necessarily related to the song just that the book started RM thinking about the idea of the concept of being singular after reading it. This song is the trailer for the Love Yourself Tear album, the 2nd album in the love yourself trilogy and ties into the title track of the album which is Fake Love. I think it alludes to when you are not your true authentic self and you wear a mask for someone else that leads to feeling isolated within love and then watching that love fall apart. The 1st verse he says he wakes up to the sound of something breaking which I think is a metaphor for the relationship breaking or the illusion of love (a fake love) shattering. The frozen lake is the relationship itself that cracks or it’s a crack in the façade of the fake love. He asks himself did I lose myself or did I gain you? Did you ever really love me or did I just lose myself in pursuit of love or the pursuit of wanting to be loved? Just to add to that RM said in an interview about Fake Love once that that the love they speak about in the song could be between 2 people or it could be between me and myself. So with that information you could also interpret the love to be self love that is breaking and when you wear a mask for others you start to lose your own voice. Interesting to note is the song that follows 1st Singularity and Fake Love on the track list is The Truth Untold which is a song about a man who hides behind a mask and how his lack of self love leads to despair. That information should help if you ever watch the music video and V's live performance which you should because it is a beautiful piece of art.
Don't think you've done a Music Video yet? The MV for this is really beautiful and aids in the interpretation. There are also a number of excellent live performances of it. V got added to the official dance line (they all dance but the dance line are the main dancers.) of Jimin, J-Hope and Jungkook after his live performance of this - the choreo isn't extremely difficult but is very elegant. Glad you're starting to look at some of the solo works!
I am obsessed with this song. It's perfect for V, I feel like it's beautiful, sensual, magnetic, and very deep, like him.
V has the perfect voice for this. It's deep and sensuous. He really adds another dimension to BTS' vocal line. Up until recently all their solo work was done from within BTS but now they are spreading their wings and venturing away from the group while still coming back together from time to time. J-Hope, RM and SUGA have done mixtapes in the past but now they are launching their solo careers. Unfortunately that will be interrupted by military service.
For a Baritone in KPOP, V has widest vocal range (as per real vocal analysts) of Eb2 ~ D6 (3 octaves, 5 notes and 1 semitone), which means he can hit high octaves with ease. .. He is multitalented. A Singer, Dancer, Composer, Producer, Songwriter, Actor, Entertainer, Photographer, Artist.... A jazz lover - He plays saxophone, piano, violin, is now learning trumpet,

The lyrics are very much a personal journey for Taehyung, and beautifully written by RM. Tae's voice is perfect for this. Thank you for reacting to it. The official MV is one of my favorites also. Just like many of BTS's pieces, it is a work of art.

You REALLY need to see the movie video or a live performance of this. The dancing is so unusual, too. V plays saxophone and trumpet and loves R and B and jazz. In US, he has visited jazz bars. He often dresses in clothes that remind me of the 1940's. He is truly different than the other members.

every member of bts has their own mixed tapes [ mini albums] and has singles independently and on their albums. for a long time like all of the bts members, v thought he was not vocally talented or good enough. v struggled like all members with identity, who am i. he had self doubt in his abilities to sing and dance. in this song he is reflecting upon himself and realizing he is a great singer and dancer. he is pushing the negative world aside. no matter what the outside world says about him, he must stay 'true to himself, show his uniqueness, have confidence and most of all he should ''love himself'. thanks again for entering the world of bts.

V has a very soulful voice that is so calming but yet he can reach the very high notes also as in his song Stigma! If you do react to stigma please do the live version it is the best! The live performance is very... Flirtatious in general, with an insane stage presence and choreography, despite the lyrics being so deep and sad

About Singularity, to me this song is trying to say that he's throwing away, trapping his inner self and real voice underneath that frozen lake, buried underneath the layer of ice. He sees his real self when he ran to the lake trying to voice out, but he tried to cover that voice. The unfamiliar sound that keeps haunting him in his sleep is actually the cracking of the ice (his inner self is trying to escape and come out to the surface). His throat hurts and he realized he lost his real voice because he has been wearing a fake mask to please the person he love, he's been burying his real self and his real emotions just for the sake of that person. He questions himself has he gained that person by burying his real voice or has he truly lost himself in order to please that person. This song is the intro to the album theme of realizing the dark side of love, the side that you sacrifice for love.
I might be wrong, but I think Jimin's Lie song has a 6/8 time. Thx again for the reaction! I agree with the others, that Singularity live or MV is really special and you should definitely check it out 😊

I can’t believe you had that whole beautiful writeup on the song and it didn’t include the very important and heartwarming story that the song was written for V by Namjoon!! The words, which are so important, were written by Kim Namjoon or RM. He had been in the hospital for surgery for a deviated septum and had just gotten out and was sitting on a bench still recovering from the surgery. While on the bench, he sat and wrote the song. It flowed out easily and quickly as many of Namjoon’s greatest songs do. He wrote this song out of his love and respect for KimTaehyung or V as an artist.

The song to me sounds beautiful and haunting, rather than baby making. 🤣 the Tear album is all about internal struggles with who you are and how it relates to your other relationships with the self, family, friends, partners, etc. Well, that's just my interpretation. It's all vague enough where anyone can interpret it however it relates to them. And that's what art is all about. 🤷♀️
By not watching the video you miss quite a bit and are doing the song and yourself a disservice. The video is outstanding and the live is really beautiful. The song speaks of him giving up his voice to gain this person love yet looking at his refection he realized maybe he loves himself more and he falls in the frozen lake.
V does good live but My favorite is the Music video, it’s art, not too busy or distracting. I think it enhances the neo soul vibe of the song. And shows him as an artist,singer,& dancer. Try it. Think you’ll like it

I think you will like the live performance... as always, they are better live 🙂This song has diverse meanings, because at the same time refers to V's feelings and to a thing that it's called BU (Bangtan Universe), that I think is too early to you dig in. I mean, as you already realized, BTS is deep, BU is way deeper. It's about friendship, loneliness, frustration, social and mental issues... But, as I said before, all the songs of that era can be interpreted as their fellings.
Ah! fun fact: most of the songs that seems to be romantic, are not, they are messages to us (Army) or are simply about friendship. E.g. I need you, says : I need you girl, but originally it was "I need you friend", Bighit decided to change it.
The music video is a whole experience.
The music, the visuals, the backup dancers, the set, the edit and the effing dance is perfection.

This song is from the album love yourself: tear, which is a part of a trilogy album called love yourself: her, love yourself: tear, and love yourself: answer. Briefly to summarize the albums 'Her' deals with love, 'tear' deals with heartbreak and 'answer' deals with the message of self love
My personal interpretation is he bury/froze part of himself(or part of his feelings) under the ice(so to speak) after an event and waiting for that part to comeback to him so he can be whole/nomal again. And the song just describes the feelings join this transition.

I love this song, Taehyung’s (V) love for R&B and Jazz has really opened my eyes to how beautiful this genre of music really is. It’s grown on me and become one of my favorites. I think you show see the live performance of this, the choreography especially!
I also suggest, Stigma by V too. That’s my absolute favorite. Cant forgot the live version too though

Despite the actual meaning of the song, V's rich, smooth, alluring voice coupled with this sensual melody could get some people feel like getting pregnant or otherwise to that point.😅 However one takes it, it's a beautiful song that touches people in their own individual ways like any Art, meaning it served it's purpose no matter how they decided to take it, it got them in their feels which what music is generally about. Hope you check out V's another solo song called Stigma which is one of my favorites from him. You nice, keep going!💜

Here we had a lyric about winter passing, ice melting and spring coming eventually. This is one of a few recurring themes, like rain, in BTS' discography.
This song almost isn’t fair. RMs lyrics and melody are so beautiful, he’s so ridiculous for writing this after dental surgery. But having Taehyung, a guy who has topped the worlds most handsome men lists for years now (as number 1 most stunning face around something the guys love to embarrass him with), sing this song almoat isn’t fair to the fandom. 😂 But more seriously it’s a beautiful understated song that really takes its time and perfectly suits Taehyung’s jazz and blues style.
My take on this song is someone who is questioning if he has given up their own identity to keep a relationship. Did I bury my voice or did I gain you?

This is another particular thing about BTS, sometimes the lyrics and the feel of the song are totally different. Here from the lyrics you'd expect pain but nope, you get seduction. Incredible lyrics for sure but sometimes you just need to listen and feel the song 😊 💜

This song is the intro of the Love Yourself: Tear album. BTS' albums are thematic and the Tear album (Tear as in cry) is no different. Where the LY-Her album was all about the feelings and joy of first love, the tear album reflects the downside and tragedy of Love. Singularity is about losing oneself in love... Changing oneself so much to please someone else that you have lost your way. I disagree that it's a 'baby making' song. It is tragic and sad for me.
side note: The title track that follows Singularity on the album is Fake Love. Check those lyrics out.

So... you know you can watch the color coded lyrics and then immediately follow with the official MV or a live performance, right? The studio recordings are always amazing, but nothing beats their live performances. You also don't NEED to peel apart and understand all of the layers and meanings behind the MV, you can just enjoy the visuals and appreciate the art that went into the choreography MV as a whole.

I think your interpretations qualified by I don't knows were way closer than the one you read which probably was authored by someone not overly versed in interpreting BTS songs. The author's need to call BTS a boyband as opposed to a group to me showed the author had already put BTS in a box with prejudicial parameters that come with the term. I think your reading the lyrics and then coming to the idea of V relating a battle within himself captures the essence if not the details of the song.
The Love Yourself era focused quite a bit on how we put on masks and become content believing that mask is a representation of who we really are. We can't really love ourselves if we are in love with the mask. Behind the mask is the real person who is filled with all sorts of richness, incompletions, fears and the like. The true person lies behind the mask. If you fall in love with your "personas" you to an extent are losing touch with the real you.
So in my mind you probably had a better grasp of the lyrics you read than author of the article whose authority is derived more from publication than anything else.
P.S. Getting pregnant or baby making music comments to me feel the stuff of African American first-time reactors whose ears perk up to what for them are familiar Maxwell-like neo-soul elements and not something expected from learned ARMYs who might be expected to promote the depth of this complex track rather than the first impressions of a small set of reactors engaging BTS for the first time.

You really should stop being scared of the live performances. Even though the video has English subtitles you don't have to concentrate on them as much because you've already read through the lyrics. That would allow you to appreciate the visuals and his voice and how they interact with each other a lot better.

@@chestnutmountainboys I think it’s different for everyone but this is the basic meaning: Impostor syndrome is the idea that your success in life is only due to pure luck, accidental circumstances, or someone else’s mistake, and not due to your competence, talent, hard work or qualifications. You either feel like you’re not enough, or that you’re too much, you feel like you yourself are a made-up lie, and that sooner or later someone’s going to find out, and your world will crash in shame and humiliation like a house of cards.
