  • “Halloween 6’s” poor showing meant that while Michael would indeed return again one day, he might be headed direct-to-video. But instead of being tossed into the bargain bins, the next “Halloween” would ultimately shake up the franchise in a big way - at least temporarily - thanks to the return of one very important figure from the franchise’s past: Jamie Lee Curtis. So grab some treats as we figure out WTF Happened to “Halloween: H20 Twenty Years Later.”

SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?

I don't think Halloween needs to be "fun". As for the trauma, I'd say they flipped the script. H20 had Laurie survive Michael's hospital onslaught where she also found out she was the bogeyman's brother. If she's the headmistress at a posh private school she would have made it through six years of school and hold down a job. In H'18 she has a few friends killed and she goes full doomsday prepper and semi-lunatic. I just can't get H20 Laurie out of my head when watching 2018, and vice versa. But I never wanted JLC back in 2018 to begin with. Been there, done that.

Overall, a decent Halloween movie, with an awkward sounding title (H20? Like water?). I think the one thing most will agree on here is that Jaime Lee Curtis owns the role here and makes it seem as though it was the last Halloween movie we'd get (that feeling didn't last long though). It was a garbage gutter franchise no one was interested in anymore at the time because the sequels became nonsensical and ridiculous. They rebranded it, made it the sequel to the originals and gave it a trendy title to distance itself from those later sequels. Fun facts
    1. During the scene where Norma is leaving she stands in front of the car from Psycho (1960) and the music playing in the background at this part is also from Psycho. Janet Leigh who plays Norma played Marion in Psycho. The license plate on the car is also the same as the second car Marion buys in Psycho NFB 418 which are Norman Bates initials and lastly Norma is the first name of Norman Bates' Mother from Psycho.
    2. Laurie teaches in class Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein and Molly one of the students responds to a question about the book and fate with this "I think that Victor should have confronted the monster sooner. He's completely responsible for Elizabeth's death he was so paralyzed by fear that he never did anything It took death for the guy to get a clue." She goes on to say that Victor finally confronts the monster because he "had reached a point in his life where he had nothing left to lose. I mean the monster saw to that by killing off everybody that he loved it was about redemption it was his fate." This foreshadows the final scenes in the movie where Laurie finally decides to stop running from Michael Myers and confront her monster. After twenty years of living in fear and seeing her loved ones murdered she had nothing more to lose It was time to face her fears and end the nightmare.
    3. Ronny calls Laurie "psycho" as she drives past him when she comes in through the gate. Jamie Lee Curtis' mother Janet Leigh who appears as Norma in this film starred in Psycho (1960).
    4. Other movies in the franchise also used the idea of a character dressed in a similar outfit and mask as those worn by Michael with the majority of these characters being killed after being confused for him. This movie also featured a character being killed after being confused for Michael however it was not established that it was a different character wearing Michael's mask and clothing until the following film in the franchise. This was the only movie in the franchise where a character killed after being mistaken for Michael was explained in a sequel rather than within the individual movie.
    5. Before Charlie goes up the dumb waiter he says "I'll be right back". As explained in Scream written by Halloween H20 script doctor Kevin Williamson this is a cardinal sin in horror movies.

I think H20 is a product of its time (very 90's) but it's a pretty decent movie and a whole hell of a lot better than 4, 5 & 6 and everything that followed H20. I do think H20 has the "best kill" of all the films and that's the murder of Sarah (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe). That girl goes through hell and fights like a demon to survive and still dies. It's gut wrenching.

I recently rewatched this one about 2 years back and its just awful. The production value is trash. It looks like a dollar bin even for the late 90s. Everthing was so vauge from when they were promoting the film to when it actually came out. For example I thought this was Halloween VII not Halloween 3 or 4, if you count the original Halloween 3 as part of this timeline. So now we have 3 distinct timelines and its just messy AF... I was fine with Halloween 2018 but Halloween Kills is so bad, even though its the most violent of all the films. Much like the Last Jedi, its so bad that a 3rd one couldn't save the timeline. I believe all 3 films can be re-editied to make either one long ass excellent Halloween movie or one movie broken up into to 2 movies and that be it. I believe there is enough footage between the 3 films to do this and it be actually great and not complete and utter nonsense, which is what we ended up getting...

By 1998 studios would have zero desire to give him any money. There is a reason why it took him till 2001 to make that god awful Ghosts of Mars and that was his last movie because studios wanted nothing to do with him after that.

On the other, I think it woulda made the killer a bit more believable. Because even though I like this movie, I just don't buy its Michael, unfortunately. He just feels like somebody _pretending_ to be be Micahel and not the genuine Shape from the first two movies. Which, if that was the original plan, woulda made a lot of sense.

I'm not even going to go into "it's not perfect, it's no maste-" WHO CARES?! It doesn't need to be The Exorcist or Silence of the Lambs. We love these horror movies in all their gory glory, warts and all because they entertain us, they don't pretend, it still tells its story. We don't need "perfection" for storytelling.
