One of the best metal singers ever, right there. I'm sorry he had such a hard time being himself for so long, and I'm glad the metal community accepted it so easily when he finally came out. I think we all always suspected it a little and never really cared if he was.

Rob seems like one of the few extreme singers who is older now but still has a really nice and not damaged speaking voice.

Im a 110% straight man who admires Robs bravery -honesty and respect for all people. He is not just The Metal God - He is a true icon as a person.

Great interview... I love the questions asked and how the interviewer allowed Rob to answer without interruption.

My favorite metal voice. I love Rob. There is nothing he could of said or done to change that.

I figured it out in 86' but thought he was bi. I got to meet him for all of 10min after the show here in MD..took 2 crooked photos of him & he signed my arm...since I had NO paper..!🙄 .The era of Priest I love to this day is late 70's- early 90's. When Halford left I refused to listen to any of that time period, same w/ KK..I only listen to his era. STUBBORN Lady. Gotta LOVE Rob...very intelligent. I'm still reading Confess..good book😉
@@shellwalsh3317 You should check out Judas Priest's new album Firepower, in my opinion it's their best album since Painkiller. I also love the duo of KK and Glenn but Priest are still badass.

I've been a fan since 1978's Stained Class.When they played my hometown of Santa Cruz ,Ca.the following year I was hooked for life.Seen the Priest 30 times at least,maybe more.This man is an awesome performer,maybe the best ever in metal.Who cares if he's gay.
That story he told about the cop arresting him in the bathroom made me so angry. He didn't even touch or barely spoke to the guy and then he arrested him. Straight people have had sex in bathrooms millions of times and how many have been arrested in America?

Followed Priest since 1978 but never thought about Rob’s sexuality. He clearly chose the camp leather image but I’ve always been drawn by the power of the music, the charisma and amazing shows.

I love Rob so much. I like that he acknowledges we've come a long way since the 80s, but it's still hard for young gay people (such as myself) too. He's both an amazing musician and seems like a really nice guy too. Means a lot to me 🤟

I had the pleasure to meet the whole Priest band in Long Beach at a bar after one of their shows in the mid-80s when they were red hot, the whole band was cool to everyone. Those were great days in metal, thanks for posting this interview.
Great fn interview! Been a fan since 1980..my friend Denise used to say he was guy and I'd say, blasphemy, you'll smoke a turd in hell lol..so wondered for a long time and when he came out I had more respect than ever for him and love him to death..awesome human being and greatest metal singer of all time. It’s sad to still see so much hatred and prejudice in places in a Erica and other parts of the world rob should not have had to go through what he went through and I’d like to think things have changed over the last 40 something years which they have but there’s always people who choose to live in completing different time period which is so stupid and ignorent abd I fir one refuse to live in a world if predjudice and ignorance well done rob for sharing his insight into his struggles hopefuly more people can feel confident to come out

Fan of Rob Halford since early 80s.
I figured out Rob was gay when I saw them opening up for kiss in 1979. I didn't care then and I don't care now. He's still a favorite of mine. That woman interviewing him is so beautiful.
I'm about half way through the book. It is pretty good. I think writing this book was a bit cathartic for Rob. He really holds nothing back and some of it is pretty funny. He's a good chap. His eulogy for Lemmy brought tears to my eyes. Good on ya Rob you're still our Metal God.

Just finished the book. Good read. But ... there is some exaggeration (80,000 people at Sweden Rock? Perhaps if you count the visitors over all festival days, not on a day itself; 30,000 perhaps is more likely). Also, when comparing with KK's book, they both seem to have a different take on what happened on the Painkiller tour as far as attendances were concerned.

Me too!! The first Priest video that I saw was "Turbo Lover" and I thought "wow, he's so handsome!" That was a long time ago, in the 80's :)
In 1986 two of my friends in the military were talking music and one started ragging on the other about Priest saying "The singer is queer!" My other friends response? "I don't care if he is? What's that got to do with music? I don't care who or what he has sex with, Priest fucking rocks and Halford is the best metal vocalist EVER!"
But I understand it was a risky thing career wise. Good on ys for being who you are Rob. We love ya.

Lovely lady, the interviewer. As for Rob, he constantly backs off. In the book, he describes the bandana code as a last resort, in his desperation, to signal for potential lovers. Now it's a mere "fashion statement"...
If we look too much into things, we'll allways find some discrepancies. Anyway, I think I'd love to read .... a "Confess 2" volume ;) I have the feeling that Rob has left many interesting stories aside.
@@Dany-nx7th How can we not look too much into things? This is supposed to be a full confession. There are no half-ways and half-truths. There is no half acceptance - and Rob doesn't seem to have fully accepted himself or his expression - which he is actually honest enough to admit, in his interviews:
"I'm a very emotional person. I'm still trying to find a settled place. That is why these interviews are good for me as I can talk things out. Talking and communication are so vital to us in life, especially when we are trying to figure things out.”
That's why backing off is counterproductive.
I think he does this because, while there's a lot of talk about how accepting his fans are, that's not exactly true.
I'm in a few JP fan groups and there's a fair amount of fans who clearly do not like the fact he's gay and are only accepting in the sense that they tolerate it because they love the music so much and so long as he doesn't draw attention to it. Out of sight, out of mind kind of thing. And I get the feeling that they'd rather he'd have stayed closeted. Online discussion you will find lots of examples of people saying that they don't mind he's gay because he's not as overt/flamboyant/effeminate etc as gay men stereotypically are, and also because he doesn't try to push it down your throat (lol). Meaning, they aren't really comfortable with the fact that he is, but they can live with it, and to be fair that's a good start for some people as it's an initial stage of acceptance.
Now it's by no means all his fans, most do not care about it and accept it, but imo there are definitely some who are not accepting in the true sense, and he must know that. So, while I'm sure logically he must try to not let that bother him, but it probably still does sting a bit.
@@MidnightIsolde my thoughts exactly. Although he's had (and still has) an amazing career with Priest, he's still "in the spotlight", so to speak, and people and fans everywhere have different opinions. He still has an image to build and keep, and this is probably where some of the discrepancies come from. Personally, I think his book is a beautiful life story and also the story of a search for love with a happy end :)) But then again, it's like you said: some are not accepting in the true sense.
@@MidnightIsolde His fans are at least 90% covert and overt homophobes, Trumpets of the worst possible kind - don't even get me started... But that doesn't justify him standing up for who he is, and for the LGBTQ+ community - for one, he claims to be a voice and role model for equal rights; he's spoken about that passionately. At the same time, he won't even voice his sentiments on the US election.
I knew he was gay back in the 80s because of how he acted and the lyrics so it wasn't anything new to me but I do understand that he didn't want to step out from the closet during the 80s because of the Aids time during that time but Love is Love.
I'm a huge metal head my first album was shout at the devil at 6yo and by 13 I was playing hells bells on guitar. I love all metal my favorite band PanterA. When I heard about Rob being gay me and my head banger friends didn't stop liking him or judas priest because of it. To tell the truth I'm sure that there are many gay rockstar.

I don't give a crap about his personal life just want to here great music. Everyone has struggles some h a harder than others thanks what makes life great.

So who has the grudge? Rob clearly threw KK under the bus. Kk was graceful and gave everyone their credit in his book but Rob seem(ed) bitter. Lol
Apparently KK had a few issues with how the tours and shows were going. Ian's drinking and rob relying on a teleprompter etc. I'm not 100% sure mind.

I just read the book. I don' t see where Rob throws KK under the bus. I also read KK's book. In both cases, the English stiff upper lip prevails. Both tread very carefully about sensitive things. Walsall, hey.

Homosexuality As a crime . It's pathetic. That is what he grew up in. He feels he broke the law. How about the straight people that get off with eachother in public. It's so ridiculous " kids" judge because he didn't come out. I remember being clubbed out of a bar when I just came out. Being gay , cis white is still not the luxurious position many disenfranchised people think it is. It's still a minority challenge. As Rob puts so eloquently.
