  • Heavy metal singer and songwriter Rob Halford, of famed rock band Judas Priest, is the latest icon to sit with Matt Pinfield for the current installment of the New & Approved music series.
With a career spanning the past 50 years, Halford has without a doubt experienced the extreme highs of success and darker times throughout his life, which is documented in the latest book release with 'Confess'. Halford's autobiography explores numerous anecdotes on his life and career, including a time where he may have offended Marie Osmond with a whip.
Rob speaks with Matt about his book and reflects on the importance of his decision to publicly come out and what it meant for his career and personal life. Halford also details losing his partner due to self-harm, and how that moment tested his journey with sobriety.
The outspoken and uninhibited artist also goes on to share his musical influences and heroes, which include Tina Turner, Elvis, Little Richard, and many more and Rob also shares what is next for his band post-pandemic.

Kids our age could be very cruel at times...but then our hero, the metal God came out and completely changed our hearts and attitude about sexuality. Literally overnight and in an instance we became more loving and accepting of all people from all walks of life. Robs courage truly made an impact us....even till this day. \m/ \m/

Good point. Isn't this what metal was always about, unity, understanding and equality?
Man, how I wish the metal bands of today would go back and listen to the originals just to see what their point was and still is today.
The world has major issues, something that metal has never shied away from exposing. Where is it today?
      Slipknot are doing well.
Are there other metal followers out there who can help me to find those who look to the past to create a better future? Please!

@@maxhenry9724 seek help dude... What other people do with their lives really not only doesn't concern u, but really honestly SHOULDN'T concern u... The fact that it does this much speaks of obsession.
This isn't "unnatural behavior" animal biologists have observed homosexuality in animals. Lesbian seagulls for example (Google it, it'll blow your mind).
Be it a rock star or a stranger, someone else being gay really does not concern u... I'm starting to think since this is such a sore spot, that perhaps you know a recently out young person. If so, I pray for them, having YOU in their life is going to make everything twice as hard.
I'm going to try to explain it so you get it. People who are attracted to the same sex cannot control it. It's not like willing yourself to hold it til u can get to the restroom. You cannot will away (or pray away) the gay. It just is. It just happens. Just like u cannot control being straight.
Here's an example, close your eyes and imagine kissing a man. It feels uncomfortable, right? U don't want too... It grosses u out. That is EXACTLY how a lesbian feels. The thought of kissing etc a guy, feels gross, wrong, weird. So, are u saying you want people to live life that way, doing things they find distasteful, just to make YOU happy and less uncomfortable? How is that fair to them? If the roles were reversed, if society were completely reversed, No gay person would ask that of you...

Love this comment. While it can be difficult finding self-acceptance (maybe not as hard now?) back in the day, and to live your life as a gay person everyday can have some trials with society in large, Rob reminds me of myself. We don't want to hide who we are, but at the same time, we don't go around letting our sexuality define us.
Because to be honest, other than relationships, and what goes on in "the bedroom", we truly are no different. Unfortunately their is a sub-section of the community who seems to take the whole LGBTI rights movement into a more social militant area. Not cool. It's just my opinion. And as an Asexual, I don't understand why we are being co-opted into the whole sexuality/gender definition movement.
For those that don't know, being Asexual doesn't define your sexual preference, or gender identity. It just means your not really interested in sexual realtionships and lifestyle in general. That being said, Asexuals do cop some crap. People think you must be weird if you are not pursuing sexual relationships. And it can lead to some more sinister suggestions.
Asexuality can be due to many different reasons. But being Asexual doesn't mean you don't find people attractive, or "Sexy". It's just the physical act of "Sex" is not a driver in your life.
I don't know. It's a interesting time, to be sure.
All I can say is, like what you like. Just be authentic. And just be respectful of others, and yourself.
      Peace

Rob seems like a really cool, laid-back guy. His head isn't in the clouds; his feet, firmly on the ground.
I completely relate with his take on practicing singing to various artists. You just sing along and see what your voice can do. I was just a rhythm/ mediocre lead guitarist. I hadn't developed a singing voice. But, I was always able to do vocal impressions of other people's voices, which I found extended being just speaking voices to include certain singing styles. It is something I've used throughout the years to discover what types of things I can do with my voice. I even practiced in public at karaoke bars in Japan (lived there for 12 years). I sang a WIDE-variety of things (e.g.; Marvin Gaye, Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, Hendrix, Alice in Chains, Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, Nirvanna, Sound Garden, Skid Row). In fact, it was via karaoke that I ended up getting recruited to be a vocalist of a band.
Anyhow, with each singer I attempted to imitate, I picked up little "textures" (e.g.; use of breath, growl, vibratos) and dynamics that I liked and incorporate them into "my" style. However, I am still not fully comfortable with "my style." Rob found his style decades ago. He's stuck with it, and got a little "grittier" as his career progressed. I like trying to imitate him, vocally, but damn, his range is HIGH in the register.
