I just saw Priest three days ago, and it was mind boggling how good Rob’s voice is. I’ve seen Judas Priest with Rob seven times going back to Defenders of the Faith, and he’s always been great, but in the latter years he’d lost a bit oh his high end-which was offset by ever increasing control and pitch. I likened it to a pitcher who couldn’t hit 100 on the radar gun anymore, but had perfected his curveball to still be unhitable. Well, there was no need for any qualifiers Thursday night. I was a little surprised to hear Sammy refer to Rob as a screamer, but after thinking about it, it seems true that occasionally Rob’s voice does sound like a precisely controlled scream.
By the late 80's Rob had really perfected his pitched falsetto, and he was using a true or semi-falsetto on a good deal of the material. They were writing more and more songs that kept his voice in that upper range. King Diamond is probably the best example of a true singer in that range, and there are a few moments on the Painkiller album, for example, that sound like Rob was really emulating King. When you age, the higher pitches are often the first thing you lose ability on. I used to be able to emulate just about everything King ever did in that upper range, but 30 years later I can't hit any of that.
That last bit from Rob is everything. TOO MANY great Artists deny themselves that simple pleasure, sober. It can be fun and even feel needed to “take the edge off” of nerves or other anxieties with drugs and/or booze. But the real you doesn’t need any of that and never has. It’s not a “blessing” though…it’s just a good decision, something the addict's mind can't do by design.
The only time I got singer's disease is years back, when I would be obliterated around 1:50 AM, and the karaoke guy would put me on to sing Marvin Gaye and chase everyone outta the bar. Man, I was good at that.
Calling Rob Halford a “screamer” seems really disrespectful and uninformed. He’s one one the most talented and creative vocalists the world has ever known.
Nonsense. He is a screamer, I mean it's Rob Halford! He screams more than any other and he's also the best at it. I love Judas Priest and I go back to the Defenders of the Faith concert tour. Long time fan.
I drink, but if I had a choice to have a drink and chat with Rob or Sammy.... I'd choose having a cup of tea with Rob!! He's got a lot of wisdom ... seen it all
Sammy needs to chill, less jimmy Fallon style and more Dave letterman style. He has these greats and then just gets stupid silly instead of deep and sincere. Sometime offensive, Rob is a pro and handled it very well.
In 1984 I was 19 on a plane to LA with a studio drummer for CSNY. He told me that the Singer for JP was gay, and I said, no way! He said yes. Everyone knows it! Point of Entry and British Steel were my faves! I sing and play a little bit. Rob is actually such a smooth baritone singer with a high range, like Beyond the Realms of Death. Sammy never had that beautiful voice. He's only a great screamer.

You have to admire a guy who can get clean in the world Rob lives in. People who have to find a way to afford or find drugs all the time have a hard enough time finding incentive to stop. If you have plenty of money , people trying to make you happy and supplying you with drugs and to take care of you when you're dope sick, it's really an accomplishment to stop altogether

I never looked at JP as anything more than a great hard rock band, metal? meh.. not for me, just good ol rock n roll! props Rob n Sam, we love ya! enjoy retirement fellas, when ya get there... :-)
Only "metal band "as a rocker I liked
For their age , they both sound good!
I was at that first sober show in NM and never would have known it was his first sober show🤯
I was a little surprised to hear Sammy refer to Rob as a screamer, but after thinking about it, it seems true that occasionally Rob’s voice does sound like a precisely controlled scream.
They literally have an album called Screaming for Vengeance
That last bit from Rob is everything. TOO MANY great Artists deny themselves that simple pleasure, sober. It can be fun and even feel needed to “take the edge off” of nerves or other anxieties with drugs and/or booze. But the real you doesn’t need any of that and never has. It’s not a “blessing” though…it’s just a good decision,
something the addict's mind can't do by design.
Phenomenal interview Hanford still in the top 5 metal voices Sammy seems like a great guy to have some tequila with for sure
Beautiful man! Two of my favorites.
I saw Judas Priest live in Weatland California was a lot of fun
The only time I got singer's disease is years back, when I would be obliterated around 1:50 AM, and the karaoke guy would put me on to sing Marvin Gaye and chase everyone outta the bar. Man, I was good at that.
I read, Rob Halford once had 6 octaves to his singing voice!!
Still going strong at 70, more to him (they are both in there 70's to be exact)
Great to see you two hanging out
Rob is god! Never forgot his roots and never lost his accent. Legend!
Couple of dudes that formed my taste in sound!! Both killer humans
Rob is the Metal God! All I can say.
Two legends and good people as well.
Would love to see another Fight or Halford (the band) release...please? :-)
Calling Rob Halford a “screamer” seems really disrespectful and uninformed. He’s one one the most talented and creative vocalists the world has ever known.
He is in every respect...the Metal God! 💯💭🙏🤘🤘🤟🤟
Also...you gotta admit...one of the BEST SCREAMERS EVER! 🤘🏼😁🤘🏼
Nonsense. He is a screamer, I mean it's Rob Halford! He screams more than any other and he's also the best at it. I love Judas Priest and I go back to the Defenders of the Faith concert tour. Long time fan.
He also likes to handle mens hot dogs 🌭🤮
Instantly hated that remark ,I will never look at Sammy in a good way again, he's not even good,Very Average
I drink, but if I had a choice to have a drink and chat with Rob or Sammy.... I'd choose having a cup of tea with Rob!! He's got a lot of wisdom ... seen it all
Now those are some cool ass old men still kicking it like it was 40 years ago
For some reason I laughed my ass off when Sammy said "I'll do a line but not while I'm singing!"
Now-a-days the only thing Rob hits backstage is the oxygen tank between songs. Hey, it works!
2 legends!!!
xoxo The Clarences
Respect for both these guys.
This is great. Love that Halford^^
If you have not read his book you are missing out. Highly recommend you check it out if you are a Priest fan. What a life he has lived.
I was at the tingley Coliseum concert in Albuquerque in 1986 Raven opened for Priest.
This was a fun watch. Rob rules.
A Sammy Hagar interview usually means Sammy speaks 80% of the time.
Sammy needs to chill, less jimmy Fallon style and more Dave letterman style. He has these greats and then just gets stupid silly instead of deep and sincere. Sometime offensive, Rob is a pro and handled it very well.
He comes across as cringy at times and does do the fallon phony thing.
@Clayton's Riot I had a problem when he yelled Heeellloo Baaaaaby and ruined Van Halen.
@Clayton's Riot Yeah I was there too I remember that summer,I liked Yankee rose better than..Helloooo Babbbby.Same summer 1986.
@ssgmail: I noticed the same thing. Rob had to struggle to not get talked over, and he was the one being interviewed.
Now I'm imagining Rob screaming Priest classics while in the shower.
Rob looks fantastic for being seventy he looks great keep on rocking rob you are truly a metal god mate🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🎸up the irons maiden manic peace and love metalheads🎸🇬🇧🇬🇧⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🎶🎶🎶🎶🤟🔥🔥
Such a excellent singer one of the best❤❤
You have to admire a guy who can get clean in the world Rob lives in. People who have to find a way to afford or find drugs all the time have a hard enough time finding incentive to stop. If you have plenty of money , people trying to make you happy and supplying you with drugs and to take care of you when you're dope sick, it's really an accomplishment to stop altogether
Excellent interview😃👍❤
2 great legends in my book
Awesome video and words!
Great video. Two legends 😀😀😀
Halford is a giant amongst vocalists.
Great voice one of the three I always loved along with Bruce Dickinson and the most refined of course Geoff Tate
I like when he came on and sang a couple numbers with Babymetal a few years ago.
I love RH.. Great interview...
