      Before Steve Perry, right? They were a mix of Jazz fusion and other styles. Totally different than the Perry yrs. Brilliant players. I can't even remember the names......"Next". Maybe "Look into the Future". Were those a couple? God, it's been so long. I think a guy name Robert Fleischman was the original singer. Maybe. If I remember right. Now I'll have to go GOOGLE it.

      @@jeffroegner1499 As far as Fleischman it has him listed briefly as a singer before Perry. You said maybe on some live stuff. Whatever it was,.it was brief. Most of those first 3 albums were alot of instrumental stuff. Then Perry came and Infinity was released. I wasn't a huge fan of their music at all, but those albums with Greg Rolie singing some with Perry were best. Infinity, Departure and Evolution albums were really good. Then a live album "Captured" did well. After Rolie left and Jonathon Cain joined, I know they hit the stratosphere,.it just seemed more ballad driven and while I didn't hate it, I just lost interest. No matter what, Schon will always be know as a phenomenal guitar player

      That album was recorded at the Plant Studios in 1985, I was the owner at the time, some great records done in those 3 studios.
      Neal had this ability to create interesting melodies just noodling around on an acoustic while chatting to someone. I never saw anyone who was so creative unintentionally while thinking of something else. Steve and Neal doing a collaboration would be magical. There was some conflict during the production of that album due to Steve co producing so the long time bass player and Steve Smith the jazz drummer left and suddenly it came together.
      Some of the best records were done under interpersonal tension. Also done at that studio was much of the Fleetwood Mac Rumours was done when the two couples were breaking up amid lots of screaming, anger and tears.

      Totally agree. The man is special. He talks about keeping that high note of Steve's going. The solo in "Do You Recall" is a perfect example of this, It's seamless how just comes in! Amazingly melodic, a master of the perfect solo for the song.

  • @sendtoanthony
    @sendtoanthony 2 года назад +15

    Whenever the greatest guitar players are talked about no one mentions Neal Schon. I think it's because of his humbleness. When you listen to Journey you can tell that his solos were meant to fit within the song rather than eclipse it. Schon restrains himself for the good of the song. He won't "show off" his skills if it doesn't fit the melody and tone of the song.

      That's a tough one to me because the music of Journey isn't gonna get much respect or sanction up next to Zeppelin or some of the other greats. I'm sorry but alot of Journeys music was kinda cheese ball. Ballads. Syrupy. Now I know he's phenomenal. Seriously. In Santana at 15. Dude is right up there. I just don't know if I'd put him top 5 or not based on the music of Journey. I know he can play though. Done stuff with Jan Hammer. More Jazz fusion. Which is what the bands first 2-3 albums before they hit it big were. Before Steve Perry. It's all about the songs. I'd probably have him top 12-15. Not top 5. He's good though

      Neal is just saying he’d like to work and or collaborate with Steve again, but that’s only if Steve is interested and wants to. It’s still kinda a one sided thing. There is bad blood still between Neal and Steve. Im guessing from Steve parting ways with Journey in late 90s. I do think it’s time to make peace with each other and let past issues in past and see if they can move forward in some way at the very least a friendship if no music comes of it oh well. I’d like them to at least be friendly and communicate with one another again. He’s waiting on Steve. I feel Neal would have to meet him face to face for coffee or dinner.
