The first guitar solo ( 8:52 ) is "the midnight train." Neil is painting us a picture of a train with the guitar. The harmonic is the locomotive engine releasing steam. The four repeating notes is the "clickity-clack" of the train, which gets faster, and ends with the horn, "Whoooooo..."

Agree. And that is why I am surprised that Rick Beato did not speak overtly about Steve Perry's singing and vocal clarity. Those two things were a big part of this band's success and I think this is the only Journey song that is covered in Beato's series. He demonstrates his appreciation for the singing and vocal sound throughout, but he never actually mentions Steve Perry's name.

He often gets overlooked when talking about "rock" singers because many feel his style is not rock. One of the all time greatest voices and talented singers? Yes, but the guys in Journey referred to him as a "crooner" and details like that often are why people don't make certain top ___ lists. Journey is/was a rock "band" but the question remains if that means Perry is a "rock singer". Personally, I agree and feel he is in part a rock singer but more than that. A more typical rock singer might be characterized as a Paul Rogers, Brian Johnson, Roger Daltry, etc., but I agree singers like Perry can also be classified as "rock" as well.

True story. I first stumbled across Rick’s WMTSG series back around Episode 17, Boston. So, March of 2018. I immediately told my brother about these, and we quickly consumed the previous episodes and eagerly consumed each new episode as they came out. Somewhere along the way, I casually remarked to my brother, “You know, if Rick ever does an episode on ‘Don’t stop believing,’ I’ll die a happy man.”
Fast forward to June 2019, and I’m scheduled to have heart surgery. It’s a routine, low-risk procedure, but, you know, HEART SURGERY. The Sunday before the procedure, I wake up to find that Rick has posted Episode 69, the band is Journey, and the song is . . . Don’t Stop Believin’.
So thanks, Rick, for simultaneously focusing on the song above all others I wanted to see AND making me fear I was about to die. Spoiler Alert, the surgery was a success, and it’s all good. Don’t Stop Believin’ . . .

@Art Lady there hasn't been music with musicians that you found, because there's lot of good music out there actually, it's just that's not mainstream.
Just search Greta Van Fleet on youtube and you'll see.

Didn't he get something done on his vocals because there was something wrong (my bad I totally forgot what it was) and he couldn't sing for years? It has just been recently, during the past 5 years or so, he tried singing after a while. I grew up with hearing classic rock and I remember listening to a lot of Styx and Journey from my dad's CD's

Rick Beato is truly a master musician. I just watched him breakdown one of Journeys hits by isolating 20 or 30 second sound bites and explains what's going on with each instrument. He highlights the added flair or nuance adopted by the original artists which gives you a sence of appreciation that you perhaps don't have coming in. Keep doing what your doing Rick, it works..

If there’s any song by Journey that I would love to see picked apart, I would go for Mother, Father. Oh my dear sweet holy God, Neal Schon goes from a slow blues outro on Who’s Crying Now which was simple and sublime to this two solo song where he’s an absolute face melter. The first solo was enough for me to sit slack jawed then he shreds the second solo and goes to some other place. The angelic outro vocals by Steve Perry are just ridiculous. Seeing Mother Father in concert 5 rows back from the stage in front of Neal Schon was amazing, seeing it with my son next to me and getting a picture with Neal, I can die happy lol

  • @liontone

The whole song is a hook. There’s no part that’s NOT a hook. Lol. That’s why they could milk the whole thing for so long, without revealing the instruments, and the “Don’t Stop” line. The whole song was so damn strong, they didn’t need to.
They knew what they had, and had the wisdom to be patient.

I first got hooked on the chorus, but its become so oveplayed its lost some of its magic, and I prefer the last prechorus now. And I wasnt even born in 81, which is a testament to how ubiqutous this song has been since the 2000s.

Great video and breakdown of a Song that continues to grow even 40 years after it was written. Neal Schon is my guitar hero. I was 11 years old in 1979 hearing the song Lights on my brothers radio. Neal’s solo inspired me to wanna play. I had no idea who was playing guitar or Journey was. I begged my parents for an electric guitar. And 41 one years later Neal is still the biggest influence in my playing. And Journey is my favorite band.

I saw Journey when they toured promoting this album, and that song had a "new" sound to it. I was into progressive rock (being a huge Steve Morse fan) and it showed why Journey was ahead of their time, and was a group comprised of excellent musicians. The friends I hung around with back then were musicians who had the same taste in music as I did, and Journey was on a short list of "popular" groups we listened to, and went to their concerts. I always find it amusing when some people don't understand just how good they were just because they got a lot of air time. One of the top lineups of all time who simply put out great music. Thanks for the video!

...in my view, Perry's unique and incredible voice is the MAIN thing that makes this song great...yes, the piano, guitars, bass, drums, production...all contribute beautifully to this track...but that voice...without that, this would never be a great song...
Rick, your passion has a beauty...and I'm moved by your admission ( during your interpretation of the solo) that you 'don't have the strength to bend it up that high'...even though in a subsequent attempt, you play it well!...THAT'S what makes THIS SEGMENT and your sharing all of yourself with us, GREAT! Thanks man.

I picked up this album, as did my childhood friend Keith on the day of it's release. We had seen Journey on their previous tour in 1980, DEPARTURE TOUR.
We were huge JOURNEY fans (also BABYS fans. Particularly Head First- the two JONATHAN CAIN era albums, UNION JACKS & ON THE EDGE. EXCELLENT!!)
    Anyway, back to the point.
It was a beautiful summer day and I was 17, Keith, almost 16.
We took the album home to his house and this song is the opening song on Side 1. It was polished and as bright a sunlight in its production. But also undeniably excellent.
In retrospect, it wasn't straight rock. It was Pop/ Rock. But REALLY GREAT pop/rock.
I knew it was time for Journey to hit the stratosphere.
    They did.
But as we learn in life and the story of this band after this album.
When you reach the stratosphere there is only one way your band is going from there...
Beyond a place of time or space. A place of timelessness.
This was their true ESCAPE. A Masterwork from a hard working road band that had all of the pieces fall together in 1981.
It only would have been matched had the singles and B-sides from their follow-up album FRONTIERS had actually been part of Side 2 of that album.
    ESCAPE is the pinnacle.
I feel their best all around COMMERCIAL/meets COMPOSITIONAL albums from each KEY era are:
    LOOK INTO THE FUTURE (1976)
    INFINITY (1978)
    ESCAPE (1981)
    ARRIVAL (2001)
    REVELATION (2008)
    * Trial By Fire was too long and lacked cohesion and focus.
It should have been 10 or 11 songs. No filler.
