Rob Halford sits down with Metal Injection's Rob Pasbani to talk about his excellent new autobiography, Confess, and a few other topics. With the news of the tragic passing of Eddie Van Halen, Rob shares some fun memories of the first time he heard the band and touring with Eddie. We also talk about what the future looks like for heavy metal, and how Judas Priest got into the mainstream while still maintaining their metal purity. We dive into the book and get into Rob's exploration of his own sexuality, and what it means to be masculine.

What is your favorite Judas Priest song and why is it "Painkiller?"
Noob
Because
The Sinner on Unleashed in the East.
Not a fan of painkiller, not sure how it became something people always mention.
Victim of Changes, Running Wild, Electric Eye.
Rob is such an icon, way ahead of his time.
I didn't like any of his songs, but always loved his attitude! He is the description of an rock legend!
@2A 4life Halford?
@2A 4life your more alert than I 'am I didn't catch the interviewers name until now.
Rob Halford comes across as such a lovely soul. Could listen to him talking for hours.
A human being isn't he!? The music side of someone is just that!! But as a musician I can tell you that we have 2 different sides to our lives! He's no different than any of us except he's rich,, for one and he's a celebrity! And it's hard to have a personal life when you are a celebrity! Always under the spotlight,,, and I respect that he is trying to be just an average guy like the rest of us!! Love this
I'd love to have tea with Rob. On that note, gotta love the metal community. Haven't read the book yet but it's a definite.
The greatest lead singer of all time is Rob(THE METAL GOD) Halford!! In Heavy Metal music he is the biggest influence ever for lead singers in my opinion. Iron Maiden is and has been my all time favorite band for over thirty five years, but Rob Halford is and has been my all time favorite lead singer for over thirty five years. I saw Judas Priest as recent as 2018, and I was extremely impressed with how amazing Rob Halford still is all these years later. Rest In Peace Eddie Van Halen!!! There will never be another guitar player to change the world like you did.
Well said!
Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson and Ronnie James Dio are my favorite metal singers of all time.
Eddie Van Halen is a force of nature.. 🎸🤟
Rip😔
Take care of yourself Mr. Halford. I’ve been a fan about 40 years. I just don’t think I can take anymore of my favorites leaving.
Tom Petty.
Take a shot or swig of your beer everytime Rob Halford says “Metal”
I'll never make it🤘
Rob Halford- always a class act in his own right. RIP Eddie!
My wife got me an autographed copy of Confess. I've almost read the whole thing. Great stories. Rob's an icon.
As a kid in the 80's growing up on JP and the NWOBHM and following these bands career's and Rob's life, there is no question that Rob coming out of the closet influenced me to have an accepting point of view of the gay community. Especially coming from an era in history where it was openly accepted to put down that whole community. I think it also paved the way to a much bigger picture of accepting all people and understanding that we are all humans together, regardless of color, sexuality, nationality, ect.
We knew you were gay in 1984. Never cared about that. You are a legend
Not everyone, he got a lot of ladies
@@honkmaster 1982, still my favorite entertainer of all time
Chuck Kramer hell yeah. One of the only people who could pull off the studded leather look
I'm from Seattle and it never crossed my mind.
Lemmy did
I've only seen Priest 3 times and I totally idolize Rob Halford and Priest. These guys are just legendary and for Rob to say such high regards to Eddie Van Halen. That says how great and influential Eddie is.
I saw them and only once. The Painkiller tour. On top of that, together with Pantera and even better, Annihilator.
After that metal nirvana I am peacefully ready for the grand reaper to take me away at any time, lol.
"Guitarmanship"
Fantastic word, Rob.
I love this man.
It's all about being a decent HUMAN BEING.And you are one ROB.
High praises to Rob Halford for telling us a story about how he meet Eddie Van Halen.
Been a Priest fan since 81' people used to ask me if i thought he was gay, my answer was always the same 'couldn't care less, his business not mine' absolute legend, my No.1 vocalist of all time and an all round great bloke, all the best Rob.
I agree, it is his business. So why does he have to right about it? We know he,s gay. We have known for a long time. What people do is their business, but I really dont care to read about man on man sex. Do you?
@@briandarazs6620Well, i guess he's writing about it cause it caused him some problems in his life, trying to come to terms with it, it also would have caused problems when you consider the business he's in, being heterosexual doesn't cause one too many problems, being gay especially back in the 70's and 80's does so he is talking about the difficulties he has faced because of it, but no i'm not really interested in reading about man on man sex but hey, it is a massive part of Rob's life so it's gonna' be there.
@@zodiac6968 An old HS friend of mine was associated with the Band Stiff that opened for JP in Texas in the early 80's. We ran into each other a month or so later at a roadhouse in Michigan. He told me that Rob propositioned him after a show down there. I called "Bullshit" and was in denial. Fast forward to the day he came out of the closet, I was OK with it and not as shocked. Sorry Randy for doubting you...I was closed minded back then. Rob...as long as you are happy...still a metal hero to me forever.
But they let me say that. WOW. That's really fucked up.
@Lefty D3-Phresh Yup your right. Someone might stop listening to whatever band, but to change musical tastes, I cant see that happening.
As a born again Christian. Hearing about him and his lifestory is really interesting. He lives not far from me and I have heard cool stories of people meeting him at a CVS pharmacy with his pet dog I think it's a small poodle, very down to earth and super friendly. My next workout I will put on some greatest hits of JP and get down. It's been said that a message from the mind will reach a mind, a message from the ❤️ will reach a ❤️, and a message from the life will reach a life.
I just finished the book. I’ve been a Priest fan for years. I got a good chuckle after I found out what Jawbreaker was about.
I love Rob, I've always loved Rob, and love Rob more with every new interview.
I love Rob Halford. Saw Judas Priest in concert 8 times and everything about him blows me away.
Pure class Mr. Halford, If there were no Priest, heavy metal would have not been as exciting, there would be no Maidens no Saxons, etc... may there be a new dawning of a return to real heavy metal like screaming for vengeance and to ram it down to the naysayers and haters, with metal we are all United!!
whoa, that would have been an amazing show with VH and JP.
Agree with you 💯
Saw Rob Halford and Judas Priest last night and wow just wow what a night I’ll never forget
Reading Rob's book right now he appears to be a very humble person and he loves what he does and he's the metal god
When I think of the ultimate Metal Singer and just Metal in general I think of Rob Halford. I refused to go and see Priest until they brought Halford back!!
I still can't decide who is the greatest metal singer ever. There are only two. Rob or Ronnie James Dio.
Bruce Dickinson, mate... 🇺🇸😎🇬🇧
@@T.R.R.Jolkien Are you serious bro?
@@cfx5000 Why not Bruce Dickenson? I mean Where Eagles Dare... just the Piece of Mind album alone.; and Powerslave. The man is pretty close to Halford.
Priest in my opinion is the best Metal band! Halford best Metal vocalist! Saw them 3 times in the 80s and they were amazing!
Priest has always been a musical best friend. Rob’s book has becoming another best friend for me.
Rob Halford all i care about is your musicianship because i love your music. Saw you in Auckland NZ and you were great.
Thank You Rob !!
For some of the greatest vocals ever
\m/
Gay or Straight this man is very honest and an overall good soul.. 😊
Green Manalishi, Diamonds and Rust - the entire Unleashed album
Very interesting interview. I have a gay friend who was jokingly telling me and a group of friends (most of us straight - the guy seems to like to push the limits of what he says perhaps in order to have some fun from our reactions to it) that he was on a web chat thing with other gay men and most of the guys were bragging about some other guys that they "mounted" and this friend then interjected that "well, if everyone is mounting .... then who is it that is on the receiving end of it?" . He told us that it seemed like most of those guys wanted to brag about how macho they were yet nobody seemed to want to assume that they also liked to ... you know, be the guy being screwed as if there was a kind of prejudice against feminine guys even among this group of clearly gay men..... which seemed really strange yet..... human beings, man. We and all our contradictions.
It was Bob Marley who sang that being released from bondage starts on our minds.
Peace.
So grateful to have grown up in this time to see these great musicians. Thank you Rob Halford and Judas Priest for rocking
us all so wonderfully and God bless Eddie. It just blindsides us when someone like Eddie or Tom passes. The world is a little colder
without them. Thanks guys! #Grateful
He's a Godfather of Heavy Metal! Flat out! 💯!!! What's up Rob!??
Thanks.
6:13... This part is so great. Metal is the best music genre in the world, and it's so diverse! 🤘😁 It's great to hear one of the Metal leaders explain that to the younger generation who, understandably, don't realize how huge this is!
16:12...that's a particularly good point to make.
Thank you Rob for everything! Thanks for the brilliant 70s albums, Sad Wings, Sin, Stained, Unleashed in the East! Thank you for Screaming for Vengeance and Defenders! Painkiller! Resurrection! Crucible! Firepower! Thanks for being brave and breaking stereotypes by coming out of the closet. Thank you for being such a class act and becoming an ambassador of metal. I enjoy reading your book, but the music you helped to create will live in the hearts of metal fans forever!
Rob, you incorporating some pop elements into Priest totally lured and hooked me on metal and got me swimmin deeper into it.
My top4 favs are in no particular order Priest - Live (with best cuts from the 80's and the energy is just awesome, better versions than the studio cuts), Sad wings, Painkiller and Rocka Rolla on which "Run of the mill" goes deep into my soul every time and often brings teary eyes, cause the song is just life I've seen. Your vocals on it are - immaculate. Nothing surpasses it.
Beyond the Realm of Death, Dying to Meet You, Dissident Aggressor, Invader, Bloodstone, Night Comes Down, All Guns Blazing and Cathedral Spires are my fave deep cuts on the older recordings.
I was just listening to Bloodstone today. What a great track!
He holds the record for kicking an iPhone. LOL I love this guy.
Halford has one of he most epic voices ever. Wondering why he never considered an opera collaboration. Please make it happen. Look at the vids of Pavarotti with James Brown and Barry White. I would love to see Halford doing something similar.
great interview, Rob Halford is a Legend Respect :)
Halford is the Halen of vocals
Love his voice when he is singing.Favorite band
AWESOME interview, Priest Rules! RIP EVH
He use to come into a restaurant I worked at in Scottsdale Arizona, Soup or salad...he always ordered milk and was very very friendly and cool!! RIP EDDIE VANHALEN❤️
Yes I've been playing their music for a week & cried for 3 days
I saw priest touring on the heels of "unleashed in the east" and Rob Halford was incredible - The band was hungry and they all played their asses off!
Wow great interview & I love the CARNIVORE t-shirt.
EDDIE VAN HALEN ERA UN GENIO DE LA GUITARRA ELECTRICA AL NIVEL DE JIMI HENDRIX.
SU OBRACES LA BIBLIA DEL HARD ROCK.🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🤘🤘🤘🙏🙏🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸1984
I luv Rob! A beautiful soul .
Love Halford! Love Priest! Heard Priest for the first time at 12. 43 years later I’m still a raging fan!🤘🤘
Enjoyed the interview & loved your Christmas album I hope Rob you do another one. I'm looking forward to reading your book. Respect to the Metal God.
The best metal singer and there are Many of them
I really like bio's from prominent rock stars...I've read a bunch...I think Rob's will be next!
"I don't fucking care...and you shouldn't fucking care"
.....true words!
Halford is the shit! I saw them live twice, and Priest doesn't fuck around, man. Still the greatest metal band ever. BTW, Tipton is a waaay underrated guitarist.
Great interview thoughtful questioning interesting content keep going
I thought he was gay in 1983 at the US Festival...he was dressed like the bikers in Police Academy. Watch any of that show...he's a great front man!
the other kinda, metal singers Halford,Dio ,Bach ,Dickinson ....love it...
Metal nobility, period.
Hey Rob...as a vocalist you and ian Gillian were and are two of my biggest inspirations...in all of your range and melody but certainly in the falsetto scream range...but I digress
I saw you guys in Austin Texas at a two thousand seater can't remember the name...but I was close enough to the stage to see you and Glens reaction to the crowd as the really roared as you went into living after midnight...I was there for unleashed in the east stuff....but the look you gave each other was...kinda like you were both shocked? Would that be correct? Thank you
Fight was fucking great ! So underrated
The ULTIMATE voice of metal! I worshipped Priest in high school and college. They made the LA Glam bands (Poison, etc...) look so childish (vice EVH)! The lyrics on Defenders and Screaming were ones to study if you wanted to delve into metal.
Well said SIR ROBERT HALFORD.🤘✌🇨🇦❤🎤💧
RIP Eddie, God bless Rob💀🔥🎸
Seriously : is it now unacceptable to say that someone has "died" ? Do we need to be mollycoddled with the term "passed" or "the passing of " ? Always enjoy listening to Rob H , very likeable guy .
Halford has steel balls.
I love the Carnivore shirt...
I never regret, I reflect.
Cool 😎
Excellent interview here, I love how this channel always finds the perfect ways to promote fair ideals instead of necessarily pushing them down your throat, and I'll always keep watching. Keep up the great work guys!
I’m totally buying this book. 👍
I've been a fan since British Steel. Rob Halford is an icon and a master of his craft. As far as confessions, when I heard Rob Halford was gay and came out to the world I wasn't even shocked. His sexual orientation makes no difference at all. Rob is an amazing vocalist and showman.
Rob was soo cute in the 80s/90s with his blond hair and lycra/leather pants and strut
We’re all gay gay equals happy Long live heavy metal Long live Rob Halford
"Vun Haylen" 🤐30 years in America and still scratching my head, whenever I hear a Brit or an Aussie, not to mention German, as they all sound similar to me.😁" Ve got tu werk tugeza"
The GOAT
Rob was chasing around Paul Dianno back when Maiden toured with Priest lol
RIP eddie van halen
Check out "You Say Yes" on the Point of Entry album.. I think it's a cool song that gets no attention 🙂
This reminded me that I need to listen to JP
Rob is a real hero
Imagine if Rob was frontman for van Halen after Dave left in the 80s.
when the night comes down
Love ya and already miss ya Eddie!
My taste for metal has gone firmly into doom. I love the horror inspired doom metal bands like Mindkult, Mephistopheles, Haunted, Deathbell. Great stuff.
Must be cool for a young person into Metal when they listen to classic Judas Priest.
Maybe metalheads around Europe were more open-minded at that time (those that I know certainly were) and we all already 'knew' Rob's gay. And nobody I knew gave 2 hoots, to be honest - he's obviously a great singer and always seemed a really nice guy, and the rest didn't make any difference.
No doubt he's seen plenty narrow-minded b@stards over the years, most likely the same with a chip on their shoulders about either musical or sexual preferences...
That stuff happens unfortunately.
Anyways, glad you're still with us Mr Halford!!!! Long may it continue 🤘😎🤘
The headbangers I ran with back in the day cared about one thing: the music. Anybody who wanted a place on the scene got it, regardless of gender, race or anything else. Shame, the rest of the world is filled with "respectable people" who just can't figure this out...
@@tonyjones1560 You realize that most of the people that were teenagers in the 1980's grew up with Judas Priest and also would be considered quite conservative today in their late 40's/early 50's. None of us gave a shit about who Rob or anyone else was having sex with. Don't forget who it was that went after Judas Priest accusing them of devil worship and the like: Al Gore's wife and her crew.
@@dangermartin69 Yeah... FTR, I'm 58 years old...
Rob's favorite Van Halen song is Eruption
....and, you just got the joke.
I dont know the details, but Rob the Metal God forgive Eddie Trunk talk to him give an interview. I know he loves your band and was a standard bearer for heavy metal in dark times.
My neighbor and some of our friends had a support group to help us with Rob coming out. Johny played guitar. I knew all the lyrics and sang. We also drank mass quantities of beer. We came to terms with it and I think it made us better people. It was really fun. LOL
It wasn't just Presi & Sabbath playing heavy stuff. KISS were quite dark & riffy & heavy in 74,75,76 Gene even scared Geezer ha, Geezer was hanging out beside the stage before they went on & gene came over & did his demon thing with the Toungue weird expression stuff & Geezer s eyes got big & he turned & walked off & gene Saaid that's when he knew he was really onto something & almost everuyone had the same response . KISS had elements of heavy metal with God of Thunder which was insanely heavy for those days & dark & mammoth in atmosphere, Black Diamond, Parasite , She etc etc
The studio version on the 1st album of 100,000 Years is bottom end hard and a brilliant heavy tune.
All kinds of bands were playing heavy music in the 70's eg. Blue Cheer, Budgie, Lucifer's Friend, Leafhound, Toad, even early Rush and Scorpions had some heavy riffs.
@@Gregbaltzer
Yeah, except no one really heard of the first few bands you listed in America. And what do you "even Rush and the Scorpions"? Those were two of the heaviest hard rock bands around during the mid-to-late 70's.
Top man!
It wouldnt be so bad losing a great like VanHalen IF we had more greats popping up....we dont...Dimebag was the last great guitar hero....there should have been at least 2 or 3 others along with Dime....but there arnt any. Eddy, Randy Rhodes, Hetfield, Mustain, Kerry were all marching around at the same time. Nothing like that now.
The very Best
Legend! 🤘
Most metal bands dont have an actual singer like Halford they could do melody and a far broader bandwidth in notes, chords, riffs, and vocals.
The Metal God 🤘🏻🤘🏻
R i p Eddie Van Halen the king
I've regressed in my choice of format in listening to music.
I'm back on vinyl.
I love the ritual of playing an album, it is a whole different experience than digital, or internet.
