      I thought you might like these books! Thanks for the review, and keep reading, because the next two duos get even better! On top of the magical chemistry between Royce and Hadrian, he writes some very strong female characters - Gwen(though she doesn't get much "screen" time, her influence is profound) Arista, Thrace, and Amelia. I always appreciated the fact that MJ Sullivan doesn't make his women "men with breasts" to make them strong. Myron really shines by the end of the series as well, illustrating that it's not just badass fighters that have strength and courage. I'll be really interested to know what you think of the trilogy when you finish it. I always used to say that while the Harry Potter world might be the fantasy world I would want to hang out in, Royce, Hadrian, and company are the fantasy people I would want to hang out with. I seriously love these characters!

    "Modern take on classic characters."
    I believe Sullivan has actually said that was what he was going for in Riyria Revelations. He wanted to write something that showed his love for classic fantasy, while at the same time doing something unique. One of my favorite series! Thanks for the great review Daniel.

    There are no words to describe my love for these books. Books have always played a huge part in my life but I've had a couple of rough years and simply didn't have the strength to read books anymore... But somehow I found an article about Michael J. Sullivan and all of a sudden, something changed and my fingers were itching to hold a copy of Theft of Swords. It took me two days to finish the entire book and two weeks to finish Riyria Chronicles and Revelations. Each book got even better in my opinion and they'll always hold a special place in my heart. I rediscovered my love for books because of them.

    I’ve heard Riyria Revelations be dismissively called “popcorn fantasy”-that’s like calling Star Wars popcorn sci-fi, Harry Potter popcorn fantasy-mystery, or Ocarina of Time popcorn action-adventure. There’s a difference between something being digestible and something being merely consumable, as I believe the “popcorn” label implies. Riyria is digestible, but like Star Wars and HP, it’s also memorable and substantial. It’s absolutely one of my favorite series. I extend that to the Riyria Chronicles, actually; Michael J. Sullivan handles Hadrian and Royce with a lot of obvious love and care.

      Let's talk about book one. Good guys have
      1. two main characters - one is the best swordsman and the other is the best thief.
      2. A monk - who is a walking encyclopedia. No no... a walking library.
      3. A wizard - only one who can use magic at the time.
      4. Prince and princess - Alric and Arista.
      Bad guys have
      1. Percy Braga.
      2. Magnus a dwarf crafter.
      Who would win???? place your bets!!!

    • @panda5996
      @panda5996 4 года назад +1

      Wanna talk about book two? Okay. Good guys get even more powerful guys like Modina/Thrace.
      Bad guys got...a giant unkillable monster that can only be killed by a very specific sword.
      This one was the biggest challenge riyria duo has ever faced, and possibly the best adventure in my opinion.

  • @Loco_Robo

    Riyria Revelations was absolutely my favorite thing I read last year. The story built up so well over those six(three) books, and paid off so magnificently at the end, that I was left absolutely giddy. So many threads woven throughout these books with these tiny little payoffs that added up to just a fantastic story. Pay attention to everything, because it will ALL pay off. I needed more. I still do. Just wait man, wait.

    Really enjoyed this series largely due to the characters. The main duo of course, but also characters like Alric, Myron, and probably my favorite character over the course of the series, Arista.

      @skizzit 4 года назад +1

      @Isabel_S Honestly, I can't really say as I have yet to read Chronicles. However, I pretty much always just go by release date anyways since prequels are usually written with the idea that most people will have already read the original series so there are often references included that readers would otherwise miss.
      Riyria Revelations does a fantastic job of introducing the characters and world. Chronicles I believe is mostly about how the two main leads met and their early adventures together so will probably be more interesting is you are already familiar with them before reading.

      Isabel_S Personally, I’ve read his newest series first (The Legends of the First Empire), then the Riyria Revelations, and now the Riyria Chronicles. I liked reading TLOTFE first because it’s what happened in the past, so you get some insight into what happened before the Riyria Revelations. Honestly, I’d recommend it this way if you want to be in the know.

      @@TheMidnightMoons Now I'm interested since I read the Revelations first and then The First Empire. I always thought it's kinda wrong to start with the First Empire cause of the massive Plot Twist at the end of the Revelations which is spoiled right at the beginning of The First Empire.

My friend had one with a really nice note written to her from Mr. Sullivan on the inside cover. He seemed like such a cool dude, we were happy to support his work. I like how the story & plots are somewhat familiar. It reminds me of fantasy books from the 80’s, before grimdark & GoT was all the rage (and I like grimdark, don’t get me wrong.) I'm 32% in the book and I'm struggling. There is very little character developement or world-building so far and the story seems to be entirely plot driven. Which would be fine, but the plot is exceptional in its unoriginality. I've run out of new fantasy series I wanted to read so I decided to give this one a go... I don't know if I'm going to finish it.

    I really like the riyria series, but I can’t wait till you get to his age of myth series. Sullivan’s writing has improved by leaps and bounds (not that he was ever remotely bad to begin with, he’s just gotten like, really really good) since his earlier series.

      Arista was an evil witch who killed her own father and planned her brother's assassination so she could take the throne for herself! Such a cunning and intelligent witch, even her brother didn't trust her and was outwitted by her...in the first book! Then....wow...so much has changed looking back...

      I haven't read any of these books. Are they that good? If it gives post book series depression I wouldn't want to start reading! Just tell me the story! There is an evil witch who wanted to take the throne, killing her father? Okay good enough. Then what happened to the two guys on the cover? Did they kill the evil witch and save the kingdom?

      Book1:
      There was a princess who secretly practice magic called Arista. She conspire with an evil wizard locked in a timeless anti magic prison for 900 years for his treachery. She is jealous of her brother who is the heir. She triggered her father's assassination. Manipulated the Riyria (yes the two guys on the cover) to kidnap her younger brother. Released the evil wizard. Her uncle Braga tried to capture her, but Riyria killed Braga. Her brother almost died, but later became her puppet king, though she ran everything from behind. The story then led into Book2 about Arista's adventures as her thirst for magic grew, accompanied by the naive Ryiria duo who were being manipulated by Arista and the evil wizard known as Esrahaddon.

    Sullivan is good. He managed to fool me into thinking books are kinda superficial adventures of two buddies. Yes, there are hints that things are not like they seem and with every book the underlying story is revealed more and more. Like some ppl already wrote, you have to finish it to be rewarded. And yes, like Brandon Browning wrote below, you have to pay attention to details.

    Just read it a few weeks ago. Good accurate review. It is good, but not nearly as good as any number of Guy Gavriel Kay's books. Still waiting for a review of his stuff. Particularly Lions of Al Rasson or Sailing to Sarantium.
