- Hi everyone! I just finished my second read of The Riyria Revelations. So today's video will be Why You Should Read The Riyria Revelations by Michael J. Sullivans. Consisting of Theft of Swords, Rise of Empire, and Heir of Novron, The Riyria Revelations was already one of my favorite series on my first read. And on my second read, this series ranking on my favorite completed series list definitely has risen. Have you read the series? What do you think about it? If you haven't, do you plan to read it someday? I highly recommend it!

Another very convincing “Why You Should Read” video, Petrik! If I ever want to know what I’ll be reading in a few months or years, I just need to take a look at what you’re reading at the moment. Thanks for spreading your love of fantasy, my friend!
You're welcome, my friend! Thanks for the kind words. I hope to have a review of your book on this channel, too, when it's ready! 😄
@@PetrikLeo I look forward to that day more than I can say!
I discovered this series after reading a fair amount of grimdark -- GRRM, Abercrombie, etc. I was "exhausted" from grimdark in general as it can be so bleak and nihilistic. The Riyria Revelations was a breath of fresh air for me. I could not stop turning the pages of the last book Percepliquis (Heir of Novron Part 2). The reveals in that book are some of the best you will find anywhere.
Exactly! It has one of the best endings to a series I've read! And you're right. Riyria books is one of the best series to read when you're in need of a break from reading grimdark! :)
I'm listening to this on audio book as a dramatized adaptation and I'm loving it when I'm done I'm starting riyria chronicles
Oh that sounds great! I hope you'll enjoy Riyria Chronicles, too! 😄
I love Michael J. Sullivan's Riyria books. I find his writing addicting. His books are just as enjoyable on the second and third read.
I agree, Irene. This was the first time I reread his books, and I'm surprised by the improvement in enjoyment! 😄
Mike has already convinced me to read this series. After the first three books (gave them all five stars 😅),I can say I love it.
Ohhh nice! This is the first time I reread the series after 5 years, and I'm happy that I love it even more. I think you'll feel the same when you reread it someday!
Your reviews of all the riyria books have convinced me to start with the chronicles and I can't wait to start! I'm going to be picking up the first volume very soon 😍
Woohoo!! I hope you'll love the series. Prepare to find one of your favorite bromance! 😁
Thanks Petrik for this video. It convinced me to check it out and I have just finished the first 2 books. Wow, the story was charming!
You're welcome! The series keep getting better and better. Enjoy!
Hi hoping to get this series soon! Thank you for the review and happy reading to you!! 🌼🌸🎉🎬
Thank you, Safina! Happy reading to you, oo!
Hi Petrik. Great book series and really easy to approach. I’ve found that the more often I read TRR the better it is.
I have a feeling I'll feel the same on my next reread!
Great video Petrik, I really appreciate how you temper expectations in this series. It’s helpful to know how the books build and to go into book one with the right expectations.
I found the second omnibus in a second hand store so now just have to get myself a copy of book one.
Thank you, Jessie! Yeah, false expectations were the biggest reason why the first omnibus felt more disappointing to menon my first read. I think as long that you know the series started light heartedly and it gets better and better with each book, you will enjoy it more from the beginning! 😄
I look forward to eventually getting into it!
Always excited for a new vid from PETRIK. Let's get this king to 15K
That would be awesome. Thank you so much! 😄
I've just started reading the 1st book The Chronicles 1, The Crown Tower. After listening to your review and reading Michael J. Sullivan's recommendation to start the Riyria series here, I'm so glad I did. I'm half way through this book and am already invested in reading the entire series. It's that good.
Wonderful decision! I think Riyria always work so well as a comfort read, too. The characters just feel like real friends after a while! Enjoy your read of the series, Wendy! 😊
If I hadn't already read this series, I would've jumped into these books immediately after watching this video. Now I am just left with a strong urge to reread them all, lol. I honestly have nothing else to add, you said it all perfectly!
Also, I don't regret starting with Revelations, but I am really looking forward to reading all the books in in-world chronological order! I am sure there are some fun easter-eggs that I have missed on my first read!
I know what you mean! This is my first reread aftet 5 years, and I enjoyed it so much. I don't regret starting with Revelations, too! I think there's a benefit with starting Revelations than Chronicles, but personally, I have a feeling on my first read I'd love it more if I had read Chronicles first. Just like my reread this time! 😄
Very convincing presentation. I'm starting "Theft of Swords" with Audible tomorrow. I usually enjoy stories with strong friendship elements, and it's rare that I don't enjoy a book that you recommend. Thank you for your review.
Thank you so much! I think there's a really good chance you'll love this one. Royce and Hadrian's friendship is awesome! :)
Great review! I read Theft of Swords several years ago and now, thanks to your enthusiasm for the series, will continue with Rise of Empire. Have you ever considered doing a video on your techniques for reading so many books? I have plenty of free time but it still takes me a while to finish books. I'd like to read more, especially ones you have recommended.
Thank you so much! Rise of Empire is better than Theft of Swords. As for your question, it's on my list of videos to make! Several readers have asked me the same thing. I hope i can make one for next month! 😄
I’m currently reading rise of empire, love it so far
Great video, Petrik🥰
Thank you so much, Holly! Heir of Novron is even better. Enjoy! 😁
I’m in the Legends of First Empire series by MJS that is the prequel to Revelations and Chronicles! And I’m loving it! I’ll be moving on to Revelations when I complete this series! Thanks for the encouragement.
It will be interesting to hear your thoughts on Revelations as you read the prequel series first. Our experience will be different! I look forward to starting Age of Myth next month! 😄
@@PetrikLeo I have zero doubt you will love it!
Awww… how I love this series!
I need to re-read this. Royce and Hadrian!
The series got better on reread after you've read both Chronicles and Revelations, Jieun! 😄
Thank you for this video! I have just now finished Theft of Swords and was on the fence about continuing with the series. Though I really love Royce and Hadrian, there are some other characters that were just plain *irritating* and I didn't know if I could handle any more irritation. With your encouragement I'll give Rise of Empire a go and see how I feel.
You're welcome! Good luck reading the series. Rise of Empire is a much better book than Theft of Swords, imo! :)
Great Video! Thanks a lot!
Thank you so much! And you're welcome! 😊
I randomly came across this lesser talked about series when needing a new Audible book a couple months ago. LOVE THIS SERIES!!!! The character work is so good and honestly is just a good time for literally any age. (And I read almost solely adult so don't let that comment deter you.) I can listen to this while cooking dinner and not worry about censoring if my kids are in the room or not. Just a really good series with great characters, interesting plots, and a good time. Also the narrator is spot on!
I agree! I love this series, and I honestly think this is an adult fantasy series that can be enjoyed by both teenagers and adult! 😊
Yeeesssss Riyria!!! I almost DNFed the first book, so I agree that sticking with it is the way to go because it's one of my favorite series now 😄
Yeahhh the first books were so underwhelming on my first read, too. I almost gave up with the series, and I'm glad I persevered! 😄 It's one of my favorite series as well!
I am currently reading Rise of Empire in the Riyria Revelations Series! I really liked the first volume, so hoping to enjoy the second volume just as much if not more! 😀
Nice! Rise of Empire is when it gets good on my first read. Heir of Novron is absolutely compelling, enjoy!!!
Aaand now i have to put this on my TBR list, i'll never end with all of your recommendations Petrik😂, but after all this what we want right? To know that there's always another beautiful journey awaiting you... and i think this is going to be one of them
Exactly, Victor! I still have soooo many books/series I want to read, and I'm sure many of them will be awesome! 😄
I was always interested in this and now I may really give it a try
It's so worth it, Jorden! 😊
I have read it. Yeah, revelations in the final 100 pages of the series were great. 🤗🤗❤️❤️ I loved it very much. Planning to read The Ririya Chronicles.
Awesome. Chronicles will make you love the characters even more, and it will make Revelations even better on reread! 😄
Hi Petrik, great review and spot on IMO. Modina is one of my favourite female characters in all of fantasy (alongside Nynaeve al Meara and Malta Vestrit), which is pretty surprising for such a lightweight series. I think reading these first is probably best, then Ryria Chronicles and then re-read the Revelations and you might get even more out of it!
FWIW I think the Legends of the First Empire series is very good also but not as good as Ryria, but definitely read LotFE before reading Nolyn etc. This is classic fantasy without the slight cultural disorientation of reading books from 40-50 years ago.
Thank you so much, Andrew!! Modina is definitely one of my top favorire female characters. I agree about Malta, too, and I still need to finish Wheel of Time before I can make the final conclusion on her! 😄
I will make sure to read Legends of the First Empire first (starting age of Myth next month) before I read Nolyn! 😊
Since it is at such a good price on Amazon I just bought this whole collection, thank you very much for the suggestion.
Superb! Fingers crossed it will be a worthy purchase! 😊
Very well put. I absolutely love this series. Finished it last year and now in the middle of the prequel series
Thank you so much, Ellyn! I'll be reading Legends of thr First Empire starting next month!
How are the prequel series?
@@franckleveneur676 if anything actually funnier. Just read the first one but they tell individual adventures of the duo and it is such a fun dynamic even then
@@ellynbarclay3121 which one did you read?
@@franckleveneur676 crown tower
Thank you for your videos - if you suggest it, I’m sold👍
You're welcome! Makes me happy hearing that. I hope you'll love the series! 😄
This was one of my first fantasy series and I loved it so much!
I'm so glad to hear that! 😊
I binged all 3 omnibus volumes in 10 days when I first read them in 2012. Could not put them down
3 omnibus in 10 days!? That is incredible. 😂😂
@@PetrikLeo I normally read much slower than you, but it was during my school holidays and I could spend most of the day reading them because I was so hooked :D
I'd dropped Theft of Swords a few years ago. I loved the idea of modernizing classic fantasy, but everything seemed a bit... shallow. It felt more like an outline of a novel with a few blanks filled in. I got The Crown Tower for free during the pandemic and reluctantly started it. Within a chapter or two, I was struck by how good the writing was. I think it was a passage talking about Hadrian's childhood that really signaled to me just how much MJS had improved as an author. I loved the rest of the Chronicles and dove back into Revelations with a renewed interest. Excited to one day get to his other prequel books
This is why I tend to recommend Riyria Chronicles first than Riyria Revelations even though it's not the publication order. Reading Theft of Swords the first time was a struggle. The writing wasn't as good, and everything felt shallow. Crown Tower is far more well-written, imo, compared to it. 😄
This couldn't have come at a better time! Was just thinking about squeezing it in before starting Wheel of Time!
Wheel of Time is a HUGE commitment. Best of luck, and Riyria should be worth squeezing in! 😁
I bought these books last week, now it's just a matter of time and being in the right mood to read them 😀
That's what I love to say. I totally understand that! 😄
Literally just finished the Heir of Novron today then saw this video. It is such a good series!!!
That ending is soooo great, isn't it!? 🤩
@@PetrikLeo it sure is! Literally checked off every box I wanted answered!
Theft of Swords has been slipping through my TBRs for some or the other reason for almost 2 years now 🙈🙈 Definitely will finish the series within this year though 😬😛
Ouch 2 years. But who am I to criticize, I have books on my TBR for 4 or 5 years that I haven't read to this day. 😂 I hope you'll enjoy it when you read it!
Rereading ToS since originally reading in 2019. Love MJS
Niceee! You're going to love it even more!! 😊
You are making me want to reread 😂 great video
Thank you, Olga! Do it!!! 😄
@@PetrikLeo I think I shall
Maybe I've been just reading too many books with hard magic systems recently, but I wish you had touched on the magic system of the series... sometimes that alone can sell me on a series!
The thing is... there's no magic system in this series. Otherwise, I'd mention it already 😆 The magic here is completely soft magic.
This sounds soooo good! So should I read Ryria Chronicles before Riyria revelations?
Yeahh! Personally, that's what i'd recommend. But if you can set your expectactions accordingly, I think it should be safe for you to start with Revelations! 😄
Not yet but I own Revelations!
I hope you'll get to it and love it! 😄
Hi Petrik, thank you again for your hard work and your recommendations. Great timing because I just finished the Riyria Revelations. I really enjoyed reading the 3 volumes. All 3 of them are equally good. There is a lot of actions, event that happens throughput the book and I love how Michael J Sullivan is able to tie them up all together, even between volumes. I also enjoyed Michael writing style, which makes it difficult to jump into another author. I started Hobb’s Assassin’s Apprentice which is much slower, but I’m only at page 40. I then took at peak at Wang’s The sword of Kaigen. I was just curious if you’ve read Sullivan’s other books?
How would you compare Hobb’s Assassin trilogy to Sullivan? Is it as engaging? Hobb seems to spend lots of time describing scenes. Appreciate your feedback.
Hey Franck! You're welcome, and thank you for the kind words. I've read the prequel series, The Riyria Chronicles, and I highly recommend that first if you haven't read them. Hobb is very different compared to Sullivan, don't expect actions and battle scenes from her books. It's all about the characters, but I found her prose to be engaging and beautifully written. :)
@@PetrikLeo Is there at least some intrigues? Suspens?
How is it compared to Sword of Kaigen? Wondering if I should not read that instead?
@@franckleveneur676 definitely still some suspense, even more well written than Revelations. I highly highly recommend Sword of Kaigen, too, though. It is the best self published fantasy book that I've read.
I read the series last year, I think it was a quite "standard" fantasy setting and story, like a reference one. The characters aren't overly complicated, the story is quite an adventure and full of twists and surprises, every story wraps ups satisfactory in the end. I agree it is very accessible, no complex mysterious storylines. I didn't enjoy it as much as other twists on the fantasy genre like Sanderson's and Abercrombie's books, but that is just my taste. :) How are the "Ages of ..." prequel series? They don't seem attractive to me, knowing the backstory mythos of the original series.
That's understandable. I didn't love it as much as Sanderson's and Abercrombie's books, but I still had a superb time with Riyria Revelations! I haven't read The Legends of the First Empire yet except for the first book. I'm going to begin my reread of it this month and continue with the sequels next months! :)
Simple answer: because the books are awesome
Can't disagree with that! :)
@PetrikLeo after i listened to the revelations, I needed to learned English to hear the crown tower (it wasn't available in German at that time). Since than I am an first day listener to all of the books
Hard agree! Michael Sullivan knows how to write strong female characters and it's not by making them somehow kill everything in a fight with ease cuz it doesn't make a lot of sense if they aren't using magic or sth. But he makes every female character strong in her own way and it's soo good
Exactly! Sometimes it feels like some authors think the only way for a female character to be strong or badass is for them to be insanely powerful physically. But that's not the case, and Sullivan showed it! 😄
@@PetrikLeo Idk if you read already the Legends of the 1st Empire but he does that there too and he even has one woman that is a fighter and good at it but not cuz she's out of nowhere punching 200 lbs guys dead with her bare hands but just by being smart and having some range, good aim and some bravery
@@aysseralwan i haven't! First Empire is on my plan to start again in May! I will read one book in the series per month ntil October! 😄
@@PetrikLeo hope you'll enjoy it as much as Ririya's adventures
Petrik did you finish The broken earth trilogy? Please let me know if I should purchase the trilogy or not. I only found your review of its first book "the fifth season". What do you think about the other two?
I did! My review should be on Goodreads, too. I disliked the second book, but I LOVED the third book! I think it's worth the read, give it a go. I'm on the unpopular side when it come to the 2nd book anyway! 😄
@@PetrikLeo thanks for telling 😊😊😊
I have Revelations sitting on my shelves waiting to be read. Now I don’t know if I should buy and read Chronicles before I read Revelations.
If you have Revelations already, you can start from there! Just know that the first omnibus is generally considered the weakest, and you won't get their deep characterizations until the later books. 😁
Got Heir of Novron to read once I’ve finished Age of War.
Oh yesss! I think you'll love it. I'll get to reading Legends of the First Empire next month!
Hey, great video. I have a great opportunity to interview Michael soon. Are there any questions you think I should ask him?
Thank you, Jody! Hmm, ask anything you want? 😅
@@PetrikLeo , anything. My show is a book marketing show, but I'm happy to consider any questions you think I should.
