I just found out about this author through book reviews and an interview Daniel Greene did with Mr. Sullivan and heard nothing but positive things about his writing...will definitely put this on my TBR list 👍📚 Great video Cass....really got my interest in these books
I’m currently reading Theft of Swords for my Sword and Laser book challenge and I’m loving it so much!! I love how light hearted it is and like you said just very straightforward and easy to read.
I'm in love with Michele's writing. Love his characters, his writing and his way of brining into a complicated world filled with a million moving parts but not bogging us down with too much detail. Do you know any other writers with those qualities?
Thank you!! You answered my question, I read the description of Age of Myth, sounds very promising. I do plan on starting on that book , possibly with it’s continuation. You’re review on books is fantastic and I have to say, I remember watching your channel on the Vagrant book review, Book one, fantastic!! Just finished book two, unbelievably awesome. ( it’s funny how the 2nd or 3rd books are wayyyyyy better than it’s debut book, Kinda like, R.F. Kuang book 3, The Burning God and John Gwynne ‘s the Faithful and the Fallen books 2,3,and 4 are absolute masterpieces. Anyway, I’ll shut up now ) Thanks and awesome review!🤘
sought this out after hearing so much about this author in your other videos! good to know there's not a strict reading order, but I'll probably go with your recommended order anyway! one question about all of his series: when you say they're fast-paced and not bogged down in details, does that also mean there are a ton of fight scenes? I'm not picky about pacing but I don't tend to find combat/battle/fight scenes interesting so I'm just wondering if that's a big focus! thanks for this guide, Cass! :)
Hi! I'm not Cass, but having read the series I feel my answer might suffice. There are definitely action scenes. A lot of the "fight scenes" are more fast paced action sequences with a few well written fencing scenes thrown in. I think what she meant by not bogged down in details is that they're not Tolkien-esque in the sense that getting through a description of a landscape or character takes up two whole pages.
Great video! I love when people do these! He’s definitely on my radar for another series to start once I get through the two fantasy series I’m currently working my way through 🙂
Excellent review and order for reading, it’s pretty much how I got into the series. I have found myself recommending to a good friend a slightly different order. My recommendation was to read the crown tower before then moving on to theft of swords. I really love his writing, but he grew as a writer and it is easier to see why to love Royce and Hadrian if you start with crown tower, than with theft of swords.
I found you through Sarah’s Nightstand and watched this video first. I really enjoyed it! I’ve read very little fantasy; would like to read more; but I have a hard time with some authors with character names I can’t relate to or keep straight, worlds that are too intricate, etc. maybe Sullivan is the man for me to start off with. Thanks, Cass!
Thank you for stopping by!!!! I think Sullivan could be a good author to start with. There is a new fantasy world, but it's not a complex language to learn, there aren't a million characters, and it's just clean fun. I hope you'll check it out!
I've always wanted to read his books! Somehow they always end up falling down on the TBR. Soon! Thanks for your thoughts on the reading order I think I have heard that the Age of Myth series is a bit more dense than the others.. Did you experience that?
I enjoyed your reading order recommendations you gave for Micheal J. Sullivan and Robin Hobb. I was wondering if read the Malazan books by Steven Erikson and Ian Esslemont and if so do you have a reading order for them???????
I bought Theft of Swords a while ago after hearing Sams Nonsense talk about them. I've still not read it however you have now reignited my desire to 😊.
Loved this series. I've read them all and read them in publication order as well. I think it isn't necessarily fantasy-lite, it's just good fantasy. Also, I think his wife had a lot of input on continuing the story of Royce and Hadrian. He has said that he will write of them until they "wear out their welcome". A quick and unnecessary note but because I love them so much: The humans crossed the border and broke the treaty, not the other way around.
So I am almost done reading Age of War and the other books do not come out for a little while would it ruin this series if I start to read Theft of Swords until the later books come out?
What a great video! I've read & completed The Riyria Revelations last year after watching one of Sam's Nonsense author highlight. Initially, I was a bit skeptical & afraid to get into epic or high fantasy because some series contains dark elements like rape. I'd say this series is clean in that aspect. It's really good for newbie for high fantasy series!
Thank you! I love a video like this especially with authors like Sullivan and Hobb who have so many books.I was wondering if you had a P.O. box. I promised a long time ago to send a couple of Raymond Feist books to you and I have finally picked them up. I’m a bit of a procrastinator. Lol
@@WhatCassRead it was written in 2001 but reads very much like old school fantasy. Just really well written. About 2 families that have been at was for a very long time and one of the young leaders of his family wants to make it right and end it but his own family ends up trying to kill him and start a war. T hats the main plot but way more to the book than that. Its a great series.
Your like one of the only book tubers that doesn't annoy me so thanks!
Sierra Dickerson wow!! Thank you very much!
I read 13 of his books last year after stumbling on Age of Myth. Absolutely adored Riyria Revelations and the first 2 Chronicles have been great.
Deighton Lewis Thanks for the recommendation!

MrTofy1974 Thank you! I hope you are able to get to them! I saw that interview too and he is definitely one of my favorite authors.
I’m currently reading Theft of Swords for my Sword and Laser book challenge and I’m loving it so much!! I love how light hearted it is and like you said just very straightforward and easy to read.
I'm reading the legends of the first empire first just starting the 5th book. These characters are amazing I love each and everyone of them.
Yes, Theft of Swords is the only one I own, so I'm on track for reading order!
Yes yes yes!!!!

I love this! Michael J. Sullivan is on my TBR list, I haven't read anything by him yet.
Lovely video! Definitely interested in trying one of Michael J. Sullivan books :)

It's seriously just good-hearted fun!! I hope you love it!

I think I have heard that the Age of Myth series is a bit more dense than the others.. Did you experience that?
Age of Myth is "denser" than Riyria, but it's definitely not dense in terms of other fantasy series that I've read!
I read and LOVED the Riyria Revelations, not sure why I haven't started on the Chronicles but I think I will do that soon.
I enjoyed your reading order recommendations you gave for Micheal J. Sullivan and Robin Hobb.

Yes!!! I'm so glad!! They're just a really fun read, and it's really nice to get in to a fantasy series that isn't so dark!
the legends series takes place 3000 years prior, not 1000. the new nolyn trilogy will end around 1000 years before riyria
Thank you so much for this. I had no clue where to start.
You're welcome! Glad I can help!!

Also..the audio books with Tim Gerald Reynolds narration: zomg...Ah-mazing.
Exelent video, just one caviat is that if you read the prequels first it will spoil some major twists in the revelations series
Going to start Theft of Swords today :)
Legends of the first empire and Riyria reminds me a lot of how the Simarillion was to Lord of the Rings.
So I am almost done reading Age of War and the other books do not come out for a little while would it ruin this series if I start to read Theft of Swords until the later books come out?
I liked his books so much I read 2 separate seies at the same time.
I know!!! When I was knee deep in Riyria, I immediately turned around and reread Theft of Swords after Heir of Novron!
I'm about to finish up Age of Swords! :D I haven't read anything else of his, but I want to!
Let me know if you pick up any of the Riyria books!!

I agree!!! This series is super clean, and it just focuses on the adventure!!!
Where can I get the disappearance of winters daughter? I can only find nook or kindle editions
The best way would be to order directly from his website: riyria.blogspot.com/p/store.html
Gotta try this guy
What is its reading age

I don't have a P.O. box! I really don't expect you to send me anything!
What Cass Read I just wanted your opinion of Raymond Feist’s best series.
not a magical border, just a river. and the humans are the ones that trespass, not the elves
I've started "Theft of Swords," and I'm loving it so far!
Yayyy!!!
Have you read the sawn's war trilogy by Sean Russell? Way underrated.
hugh jarms No I haven’t! What’s that one about?

Okay People this is for all those who keep asking 'How to read?'

Haha...I'm a firm advocate in publication order!
What Cass Read :)
