    Having read Revelations and Chronicles, it does stay a fun, swashbuckling time for a majority of it. There are few more serious/dark moments, but never enough to feel too dark/serious. Their friendship definitely gets more fleshed out later.

    Riyria is one of my favourite series. Royce and Hadrian are such a fun "buddy cop" duo. The series does have more serious moments but it remains fun the whole way through. What's also fun is because how it was written, when Sullivan got to a reveal or a plot point that he felt wasn't set up enough he could go back and add in places fleshing out to build to that so for me it all comes together in a very satisfying way

    Tulio and Miguel! That's exactly what I said 😂 I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Aspects of it do get more serious, but it never completely loses its fun charm. I think the trap in book one takes the cake for ridiculousness, but the villains keep twirling those mustaches

  • @kflott

    Yeah don't try to think too hard about the engineering, just enjoy the ride. Royce and Hadrian have such a great banter between them (I'm betting from that Psych clip you can appreciate such a dynamic)

    I do love these. I read them a couple years ago when I needed a break from 1000-page tomes. They get a little more complex as they go, and you learn much more about Haydrian and Royce. But they are pretty fun and light-hearted all the way through...the collapsing tower thing was a little crazy. But the dwarf is funny.

    Yes, Allen! I totally got The Princess Bride vibes when I read this book! I remember distinctly thinking that, especially towards the end. I think the friendship between the two main characters did get overblown for me, and I think timing also didn't work for me with this book. I was reading it at the same time as Abercrombie's Before They Are Hanged, and that was the Abercrombie book that won me over. I kept comparing the two writing styles, which was so unfair because they are doing very different things. Glad you loved it, and I love your mustache-twirling villain impression!

    Yeah, the first 2 books (Theft of Swords) are building up to the friendship. Also, Sullivan was still getting the hang of things. But when you get to the next bind up (especially the individual book The Emerald Storm), their friendship just bursts off the page (and you get much more of their backstorries). I still stand by them being the best friendship out there. The same thing goes for the characters (especially Arista). They get better development as you move along the series.

    So with the friendship, I think they are supposed to be super close in book 1, so there’s not development per se, but Sullivan gets better at writing them so you see it more. I wouldn’t say they’re the best written or deepest friendship out there, but I enjoyed it. I think Sullivan’s character writing only gets better, and I assume the prequel series will have more development of Hadrian and Royce.
    I also loved the swashbuckling good time book 1 was! While I think the whole series has elements of swashbuckling wildness, I do think book 1 is peak swashbuckling wildness. Book 6 is probably number 2 for me in terms of how ~fun~ the series is, and I think you’ll see book 2 take a bit of a darker turn. It’s not grimdark or pessimistic to me, but I was a bit taken aback by the slight tone shift at times. But Sullivan always has his jokes 😂😂 And for me, all the secondary characters became so much more lovable as the series goes on (except Myron-he was lovable immediately), which really enhances the fun. I’m so excited to see u continue with this!! I just started book 1 of the chronicles & I can see Sullivan’s growth so much!!

Finished the whole series, and like all good books it gets better after each omnibus. more character development and plot gets deeper. we get to see a lot more on the political side.. Royce, Hadrian, Arista and Myron are stunning in the last book and a few more additional character will pop out and will become a favorites.. For me atleast.. have fun reading the Riyria revealtions.

    I've been Going through all of his books in the past year and now I'm reading chronicles, then on to nolyn. Riyria is really fun, it does get more serious later on (but def no where near as series as other books) and you get more characters depth. I think you'll enjoy the whole series

  • @eddya7894
    @eddya7894 2 года назад

    PS - Yes, there is a lot more ridiculous engineering! I guess you could look at it as "Dwarf Magic", because they can engineer anything! Yes, the villains continue to twirl their moustaches. And there are some twists and turns and altered allegiences, but they continue to reveal their wicked plans in the most fun and outlandish ways. The series does have more serious/melodramatic moments as you get to the back half, and the stakes are raised quite a bit... but I don't think the series ever loses its sense of humor and fun. It remains a great swashbuckling adventure.

    As a history buff (and a history teacher), I think this overall series will be right up your alley. And if you like this series, be sure to read the prequel series LEGENDS OF THE FIRST EMPIRE. What Sullivan does regarding the history of this world is something that is so rare in fantasy (with the exception of maybe Malazan). You caught on to how he shows different groups of people practicing the same religion in vastly different ways. But he also does that with the overall history of the world. As you go along, you'll slowly begin to see how he uses the "info dumps" to show very different interpretations of history, and outright conflicting histories. The prequel series fleshes it out. Sullivan has said how he wanted to build a realistic world where the victors write the history books and found the religions, and the common people know very little about what actually happened in the past. And the politization of history serves certain parties over the years. I know it's a lot to commit to, but I think Sullivan does some of the best world building I've seen (over the course of 17 books so far). While he does info dump in the beginning, the rest of the series is a bit of a world building slow burn as the mysteries are uncovered and the actual history revealed. As can be seen, I'm a huge Michael J. Sullivan fan, so I get over-excited when I see a good review of his books. Happy reading!

    I fear that bk 1 is the lightest swashbuckling romp of the 6, though I started to really care about the characters and fate of this world by the end, so it offers different rewards. I’m eager to try Chronicles to see if it returns to the feel of the Crown Conspiracy.

    I completed Riyria Revelations after reading The Legends of the First Empire series by Michael Sullivan. They both take place in the same world but ‘Legends’ is thousands of years prior to Riyria books. Both series were fun, adventurous reads, but I did shed some tears especially with the ‘Legends’ series. He is definitely an instant buy for me. I plan to read Riyria Chronicles this year along with continuing ‘The Rise and Fall’ series. Michael has his own website so buy from his website if you want signed copies of his books. They usually throw in bookmarks to go with the books when purchasing from his site. 🙂
