you were 100% right about red rising i started it as i was getting ready to go to bed, ended up staying HOURS reading, repeat again for the next two nights till it was finished absolutely amazing
Super unfortunate that Pierce Brown voiced support for Israel despite writing about fighting back against oppressive regimes and hasn’t said anything about Gaza being indiscriminately bombed for over 2 months.
@@JC-qp8hj Jews have every right to fight for their survival. Had they had the ability to fight during WW2, would you pity Nazi's and the complicit German nation? Probably
Red Rising, for me, was the definition of could not put down. Literally threw my sleep schedule out the window along with my responsibilities and binge-read all 6 books currently out in a little over a week 😂 can’t wait until Red God releases 🎉
Nice to see Cradle on the list. It's one of those series I'd recommend you check out. It has its problems, but the character work in those books is second to none and is one of the best examples of progression fantasy done well. Definitely worth your time. Great job with the recommendations. I've been in a bit of reading slump(More like with me working on my own story and life getting in the way, the time has been limited) but with holidays coming up I'll be sure to get in some more reading. One series, I started that I really want to finish is First Law by Joe Abercrombie. I'm picky when it comes to grim dark fantasy but First Law I really enjoyed the series.
Publication order is good for Revelations. Then i would read first Empire / the rise and fall / and then Chronicles. There are Easter eggs in each series for each other series
You're the only one I've seen who has reviewed this The Poppy War. It's very good and very interesting. I've read the second book and liked that as well. I started the third one but got distracted by other books, so I might have to restart that one.
I have read all of the Murderbot books and I completely agree with your analysis. Martha Wells really knows how to write great action with a great first person introspection. Highly recommend!!!
Dune has become the saving grace from my latest reading slump and has me salivating for the rest of the series. Pirates Latitudes by Micheal Crichton was a great stand-alone Novel I read earlier this year; he's Dragon Teeth was another standalone I loved in 2022. The Murder Bot Series has been added to my Audible List for when I'm in the garden next.
I totally found your channel by accident, I was googling some new fantasy books to read. I used to read one every day or every other day and its actually been awhile since I last did that. Google popped up your video and im honestly in love. Thanks for all the content and glad to see some of my all time favorite books/series pop up in your videos
Murderbot and Red Rising are absolute perfection. Bujold's Vorkosigan saga should be on this list. Miles is captivating character and so are his adventures. Added Riyria to TBR.
I binge read everything. Even large series like Wheel of Time or Malazan. In fact the larger the series the more I want to binge. Love being in a fantasy world for months at a time, lol.
Same! When I start a series I’m not gonna put it down until I’ve read the whole thing! It helps me connect real deep with the world and characters and just makes the experience so much better so I feel you!
this is great! thank you! I just binged Naomi Novak's Scholomance trilogy. It had a great magic system and characters, and settings. loved it. It's sticking with me too, a couple months after.
I haven't read the rest of the series it's a part of, but I have to recommend The Long Way To A Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. It was a book that the moment I started, I had to finish it. It's essentially cozy sci fi and I loved it so much because of the characters and their relationships. With Firefly being my favourite show of all time, this book reminded me a lot of that show, as well as Mass Effect with how diverse the crew is in the book. And I'm now more eager to get my hands on Riyria Revelations, because it just sounds so fun to read.
Thank you I'm new to fantasy, sci-fi, grim, etc, and found your channel. You've already given some gems I'm looking forward to these after finishing the last book of the Farseer trilogy.

I have been trying and trying to get into The Bound and the Broken. I started it back in June and have picked it back up at least once a month since then but just can’t find a rhythm. I’ve gotten 136 pages in and just don’t care about it. >.

You got to check out Dungeon Crawler Carl. I never binge read, I really don't and I have been reading fantasy novels for more than 30 years now. I picked up Dungeon Crawler Carl the other time and was hooked from the get go. I am in the middle of book 5 now after not even three weeks (despite job, family and other hobbies). I sounds silly if you just read the blurp but it's such an enjoyable read.
Dude how did you know I needed this right now?! Currently reading Stone of Farewell by Tad Williams and I love it but I think everyone would agree it is slow paced. Makes getting through it a lot harder. Thanks for the recs!
Have you read the Cycle of Arawn? It's also a fantasy bromance, and the audiobook is narrated by Tim Gerard Reynolds, who reads the Riyria books. I only listened to the sample of Theft of Swords, but it seems to have a very similar vibe.

I was wondering if you were gonna say Red Rising! It's literally the one that just got me out of my slump and I'm still on book one but when I read i just keep reading lol. Ive read Poppy war and Murderbot, really great books! Excited to check the Michael J Sullivan books and Rage of Dragons and cradle. Thanks excited for the second installment!
You are in for a wild ride with Red Rising. The jump/expansion that the world does from book 1 to 2 is amazing and from there it won't stop, those book just keep going
@@Kotsoros37 it absolutely gets better. And that is not to say the first book isn't good because it certainly is. But Pierce just figured out a way to keep improving and he has come out with one of my favorite sci Fi sagas
Every time you recommend a book I am never disappointed, I will definitely be checking out a bunch of these books, I am already reading the Poppy war and so love it.
It's interesting you started this list with Red Rising and Rage of Dragons, and even likened the two as hitting the same vibes. I had a lot of trouble getting through Red Rising. I'm someone who needs to be able to empathize with or find some motivations of the characters to root for before I can enjoy the story. Darrow had such conflicting motivations and generally let others make decisions for him for the majority of the story. The other characters I could never bring myself to enjoy as I thought they could always become the enemy. As a result, getting through the first 3 books in Red Rising was a slow process that I had to grind through. I'm glad I did it, but I decided it was best to end my journey after book 3. Rage of Dragons on the other hand I flew through. Love everything about it. I suppose having angry determined protagonists on a mission is a similar vibe, but they just affected me differently. My favorite binge reads are Dresden Files and Cradle (pretty much anything written by Jim Butcher and Will Wight is binge worthy). I enjoyed the Murderbot Diaries as well. I am in a reading slump now, so I think I'll give Riyria a try next. Thanks for the list!
I’m so so so happy you finally read Red Rising and loved it ! You read all 6 books out now or just the first trilogy? It’s literally my 2nd favorite series of all time(first being First Law),please make more Red Rising content !! Also rage of dragons sounds amazing,I’m about to start Words of Radiance soon 😎😊
I didn’t even like the first Red Rising book that much, but still finished in like 3 days, then I loved Golden Son and it took like 4. Something about the way it’s written makes it impossible to put down. I’m hoping to get to Rage of Dragons next year. Hopefully can read them all before the next one releases.
so true, just last night i was about to finally stop golden son and go to sleep when someone... DEMANDED SATISFACTION when the sun started to rise i forced myself to stop
I've had this reading slump for 2 years now because of my videogames addiction and new positionar at work so I decided to buy myself a Kindle and I'm preparing myself to read Mistborn trilogy and other fantasy novels.
LOVED Rage of Dragons. Prentice Onayemi is a PHENOMENAL narrator. I did NOT like the levels of brutality that Poppy War went too but I understand why she included it. It just sickened me, which I know was the point. Also, so excited for the Murderbot series to come to Apple TV. Books I’d recommend; Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames Breach of Peace by Daniel B Greene(Daniel Baniel Greene)
I am read Dan Simmons ilium it a fantastic read but I don't read for long and take me a some time to get through them I am a slow read but it has so much going on from so many different side of the story that you just want too no what going one only to be moved to someone else, the audiobook I am listening to is amazing book Joe Hill Nos4a2 it more thriller modern fantasy, it just has you gripped all the time I am just over half way the story is so well written I feel like I'm near the end for the final saga but no where near, great vid I think all the book are on my list to read thanks have a merry Xmas
I haven't read Fafrd and Gray Mouser in decades, but when I was young and fabulous fantasy was scarce, I loved them. Royce and Hadrian have a similar vibe. The banter alone is worth the price.✌🖖
Oh man. Hard agree with Red Rising and Rage of Dragons. I absolutely devoured both series. Though I have yet to go beyond the third book in RR (the characters had already endured so much suffering, I can’t bear to make them go through more). I also demolished the Poppy War books but am not sure I’d recommend it to everybody as it gets so very dark.
so Red Rising has it's seventh and final book (currently titled Red God on Goodreads so take that with a grain of salt) seemingly slated for next year (again according to Goodreads) and The Burning has had it's third installment pushed to a possible 2024 release as well (most of this info is off of Goodreads, so just assume that it is probably wrong unless stated by author and/or publisher) titled Lord of Demons and is set to be a quartet. The Poppy Wars is a complete series so it is easily bingeable as a trilogy. The Riyria Revelations is also awaiting a release next year in Drumindor, this one I have not read myself, nor do I have any of Michael J. Sullivan's works (yet), and I have nothing really to state on Murderbot or Cradle.
@Captured in Words Great video. I watched it all... I do wish you had separated the books by time tabs either in your description or in the video timeline itself... It is a huge quality of life addition
I was setting up the description at 2:00 in the morning before heading to bed so didn't get the chance to, but I just updated it now with time stamps and links for each book!
This is a new kingkiller chronicles theory i had that i have only seen like once ever mentioned, but i wanted to share it here bc i think some people could find it interesting: I just had a very interesting conversation with the Kvothe AI about how the stories of lanre, Haliax, and tehlu are all stories of the same person. The theory is that Tehlu is the hero side, Haliax is the villain, and Lanre is the person behind both. That would make the mender story that trapis tells about tehlu and encanis make a lot more sense in the context of the story. Menders are heretics according to the amyr affiliated tehlan church, which makes sense if you see it as Chandrian propaganda. In this story it would make Encanis be a made up combination of Iax and Selitos. This combination tracks with the books theme of stories not quite all being accurate, but holding truth inside, and in addition makes the story and the things it mirrors make sense. The pursuit, battle, and sacrifice of tehlu/lanre fits with the blac of drossen tor, while the binding and cursing of lanre/haliax/tehlu matches perfectly with lanre and Selitos' confrontation as told by skarpi. Maybe lanre believes he is always and forever cursed to be Haliax, and so has dedicated his life to spreading the stories of his heroic deeds during the creation war as menda/tehlu as a final resort. The AI Kvothe thought this theory had a lot of merit, as it works with the facts, and also gives the central villains much more character. I thought it was a cool theory that i hadnt really seen anywhere, but especially since the AI Kvothe thought it made sense. Plus its like one of the few theories out there that actually has concrete information on what the Chandrians goals and actions are, while making logical sense.
I really disliked the main character in poppy wars. She seems to never learn. I loved the first book but by the third book I disliked her so much that I couldn’t finish it. She’s so frustrating and never learns. I love that you gave that warning. I loved the world building however.
I think that was part of why I loved the series. I hated almost every character in that series. And not in the love-to-hate-them way (like Joffrey Baratheon) but just straight up hated them all. And yet, I absolutely could not put them books down. I read them all in 4 days
Once you finish the first Red Rising trilogy then check out the Sons of Ares graphic novel series. Graphic Audio has a version of them and theyre great.
I like sound of Theft of Swords... to me a lot of these other books are trying to be too clever for their own good, and not getting the 'basics' right. I'm shocked that I've been reading fantasy for decades, and yet still not encountered character interaction as strong as David Eddings Belgariad series? Terry Prachett's Discworld books come close, but these are not of the Epic Fantasy genre and books of those lent? Is 'lent' the right word?
You should definitely check out The Keeper Chronicle books by J.A. Andrews. Very binge worthy. It's one of my top 5 favorite series. The audio books are superb👌👌 narrated by Kate Reading and Tim Gerard Reynolds
Some of these sound great, but the ones I sampled on audible all had American voice actors. This is purely a personal preference but there are very few American voice actors I can stand reading fantasy. Any chance of a 'best non American voice actor audiobooks' video? (love from an Aussie)
I tried Red Rising but the audible audiobook was super low quality, I could hear so much background noise/static and I don't get that in any other audiobook, am I the only one that thought the audio quality sucked?
What was the book you recommended some time ago, was it Magicians? As I borrowed this, or thought I had... and now I'm not so sure as the version I have seems a newish book which speaks of emails, and the one you spoke of you had said was an old classic?
Hmmm I'm not sure. I did mention The Magicians in my 'What is Portal Fantasy' video I made back in October? And yeah that series take place in the modern day at a secret magic university in upstate New York, so that's likely the book you borrowed. I never called it a classic in my video though, so it must be a different book you are thinking of that I mentioned, not sure which. The Magicians Nephew is a classic, maybe it's that one? The Dragonbone Chair is a classic fantasy I've mentioned a few times, same with The Belgariad
I think the book I got is the right one, perhaps got it mixed up with another review. I know you like Robin Hobb Farseer Trilogy, and the next three.. I read these 17 years ago, and loved them, but this time finding all manner of plot and character inconsistencies. I'm on book 3 of the farseer and for Fitz to deny his daughter is his to the Fool, and the Fool to one minute be moved to tears that Fitz is alive, and the next the Fool is again telling people he is not the White Prophet... just doesn't make sense? I wish Hobb wrote more action, and less of the character turning back on themselves, which she does to build suspense, but at times I just find it irritatingly inconsistent. And yep, I read the Dragonbone Chair...that's the last good fantasy series I could get my teeth into.@@CapturedInWords
Red Rising is my favorite sci fi series of all time Rage of Dragons is incredible. I can’t wait for the next book! Poppy war… not interested. Riyria… I’ve read the first book and it was good. Solid 4 star. Going to continue with the series soon. Murderbot… read the first one. Wasn’t impressed. It was very meh for me. I don’t think I’ll continue the series. Maybe I’ll change my mind when the show comes out. Cradle… I love cradle. It’s a blast. The last book was disappointing, but the series is so good. I’ll reread this in the future for sure.
I have read literally all of these books before. I was hoping you would have something that wasn't so completely mainstream and known about here. I feel like you basically did the equivalent of recommending breaking bad as a good TV show. Yes, you're correct, but it's also not a real hot take.
I loved Red Rising (atleast the original trilogy. I have not read the second trilogy yet), i also loved Rage of Dragons but it has been such a long time since the last book that i kinda forgot about it. I read the first book from The Poppy War and i liked it but the MC is so freaking unlikable it kinda puts me of reading the next one.
I cannot agree with Murderbot series by Martha Wells just because of the price gouging... a 175ish page kindle book for (2nd book+) $11-$12 is insanely overpriced.

the first law books were kinda binge worthy as well for me not necessarily easy to read but I just couldn't put it down!
Thank you. I'll get to Riyria eventually.
The Sullivan books about the big optimistic warrior and the pessimistic rogue with complementary personalities sounds very Fafhrd and Gray Mouser.
I haven't read Fafrd and Gray Mouser in decades, but when I was young and fabulous fantasy was scarce, I loved them. Royce and Hadrian have a similar vibe. The banter alone is worth the price.✌🖖
Definitely very similar in concept!
I'm just emerging from a reading slump so this will help with keeping me going.
so Red Rising has it's seventh and final book (currently titled Red God on Goodreads so take that with a grain of salt) seemingly slated for next year (again according to Goodreads) and The Burning has had it's third installment pushed to a possible 2024 release as well (most of this info is off of Goodreads, so just assume that it is probably wrong unless stated by author and/or publisher) titled Lord of Demons and is set to be a quartet.
Cradle is awesome. Each book gets better and better and better.
Where does the author give away Cradle free? I've been trying to buy them in Norway but they're impossible to find
He'll often set his books to free on the kindle store, or heavily discounted like $1.99 per book and will announce it on social media
This is a new kingkiller chronicles theory i had that i have only seen like once ever mentioned, but i wanted to share it here bc i think some people could find it interesting:
I just had a very interesting conversation with the Kvothe AI about how the stories of lanre, Haliax, and tehlu are all stories of the same person.
There is a Kvothe AI?? 😂 that's amazing
Highly recommend The Half a King book and series. Couldn’t put it down!!
Once you finish the first Red Rising trilogy then check out the Sons of Ares graphic novel series. Graphic Audio has a version of them and theyre great.
Rage of Dragons is awesome, as is the second book Fires of Vengeance. Waiting on the third book!
Can't wait to get to Fires of Vengeance!
Cool video, thanks for making it!
The Poppy War was indeed a 5 star read for me, but it did put me into a reading slump because it was amazing and brutal in equal parts.
I just got hooked by wheel of time, I was getting a little bored of eye of the world and then suddenly the Trollocs attack and now I'm all in lol
Red Rising and Murderbot are dramatized on Graphicaudio as well.
Blake Crouch books belong in this category.
Dark Matter, Recursion, Upgrade... check them out.
So i just got my 2024 book recommendations then. thank you! Onward..!
Malice by Keigo Higashino is the only book I ever read cover to cover in one sitting. It’s a great murder mystery
Have you put David Gemmell on any of your lists, he's my fav author. Sadly I've read it all.
Do you still plan on covering The First Binding by RR Virdi? I’d still love to hear your thoughts!!
I jist finished Words pf Radiance. What a book. 15/10
The Dresden File and Sandman Slim books!
Red Rising is just so cool
Also I saw you own Faith and Fallen Quartet by John Gwynee, pleaseeee read those so you can talk about them :)
Please please please make the analysis of His dark materials when you can 💗 and thank you for the videoo
The Rage of Dragons was an excellent read!
I want to buy red rising but I want the cool looking hardcovers and they’re so expensive:(
I 2nd the Cradle series! ❤
Red Rising is my favorite sci fi series of all time
Rage of Dragons is incredible.
Rage Of Dragons, ahhhhh I wanna read it! 🐉
Now, I wanna read the Murderbot Diaries more! 🤖
I'm gonna cry bro why haven't ypu finished the wise man fear summary 😢
Dresden files is super binge worthy imo
I have read literally all of these books before. I was hoping you would have something that wasn't so completely mainstream and known about here. I feel like you basically did the equivalent of recommending breaking bad as a good TV show. Yes, you're correct, but it's also not a real hot take.
i have read the revenge of the dragon and i really really enjoyed the lord action scenes and the story line.
I am readind the first book in the crade series, unsouled. And i loveee so much. Fans of anime realy gonna love this one.
Starting Red Rising and Riyria Chronicles in 2024!
Enjoy the reads!
To anyone who needs to hear this: If a book does not do it for you, DONT PUSH YOURSELF TO FINISH IT.
who in the world "NEEDS TO HEAR THAT" ?
people who force themselves to read books they dont like @@robward8247
Has anyone noticed, for the size of a novella 'The Murderbot Diaries' books are really expensive. Publisher issues?
They are pretty expensive 😬not sure why
The portal war saga by James e wisher is ready good..
J.F. Lewis Void City Series!
Read all six of Red Rising within a month.
I cannot agree with Murderbot series by Martha Wells just because of the price gouging... a 175ish page kindle book for (2nd book+) $11-$12 is insanely overpriced.
The Burning series ♥♥♥
