  • Hello all, this is my video to help you all navigate the ways of Michael J Sullivan. You should know that the way I read this is indeed the way Michael himself recommends reading it, but reading them at all is a win to me. Enjoy!

What an absolutely wonderful video. You have me wanting to read all these again myself! And as Kat mentioned in the comments, yes, this is the order I recommend. I do so because it is how I wrote them. As a result, I expected readers to have read the previous books, and so had that in the back of my head as I built the stories. I also want to say that I was impressed by your pronunciations of the words. Usually those who read can spell the names have difficulties speaking them. You did not, which makes me think you've heard Tim Reynolds. And I agree with Mark that Tim is the best. Also I would like to add my support for Pierce's books. The man is young, handsome, talented, and-irritatingly--an extremely nice guy.
I can't thank you enough for making this video, I stumbled on it and was transfixed by your passion. The portion where you are describing the cast of the "Age" books, where you halt the recording...that was...well, that felt pretty darn good. Thank you. Writers don't get to hear the applause when the cover of a book closes, but I swear I saw it in your eyes.

I have sat here for the past few hours unable to formulate a reply to this 😭! Thank you so much for watching my video, I told you when I emailed you I was your number 1 fangirl and I hope you got to see that in this video.
I adore your books and cant wait to read more of them as you continue to create stories, characters and worlds that take my breath away!
Thank you so much for not only being a great writer and giving me books to enjoy but also for being a great author to your fans. You always have time for those who support you and it definitely makes all the difference to us!
Now to patiently (or not so patiently) await Age of Empyre 😂

@@booksteff It was quite touching, thank you. Sadly, you are also right that my readers are similar to a secret society. I've had readers chastise me for not doing more to create a fanbase they can interact with. I do try, but it is people like you who make that happen, which is why this is so wonderful to see. My wife will be the first to tell you that I don't do things for money, but for reward like this.
Concerning Age of Empyre...spoiler alert...there will be no cliff hanger! My wife is going over the last of the edits now. Tim is scheduled to record the book this week, but I have yet to do my final read through now that all the editors have had their fun. Sometimes they break things because they have no idea what comes next. They think this is the last word on the series, but there are moments where a simply innocent paragraph appears pointless, or even wrong, but that is only because they don't know what it is for. So I do have to do one final check to make certain everything is as it should be. You see, I have already written two more novels that follow these-not in this series but in another-the Bridge Books. Those novels contain lots of stuff that is being set up in the "Age" books, while also connecting bridges to Riyria. Yes, my writing world is very complicated. No one has read them yet, not even my wife.
Once more thank you. I will need to keep an eye on this place now that I have found it. Unless, you would rather I stay away. My daughter suggests that readers don't always want an author to see what they say. It makes them self conscious. The primary reason I stay out of my own "Riyria" reddit section. I don't want to intrude on the discussion. So I will grant you your privacy if you wish, and just say, I thought the video was brilliant.

@@michaelj.sullivan1368 I have been lucky as my two closest friends love your books too, we are all apart of the kickstarter because we wanted to support you and your work so much. I think we manage to find other fans if we look out for them and social media is great for spreading the word and getting more people to discover your books, I know me, kat, and abbey have attributed to a dozen or more people picking up your books...its an amazing thing!
I can't believe Robin hasn't gotten her hands on it yet! I know how much she supports your work and I think she's a queen. I am happy there will not be a cliffhanger but I am an anxious mess about what I will be facing in this final installment!
I don't mind at all if you want to pop in from time to time on here. It doesn't make me self conscious, its honestly quite surreal.
Just a quick tidbit...me and my two friends Kat and Abbey formed a book club recently. We named it The Rose and the Thorn Bookclub because we figured thats where all the best partnership's meet up and since we are undeniably nerds it was an obvious choice.

@@booksteff I am certain Rose will be touched to discover she is remembered in a book club, despite being illiterate. :)
Robin is Arista, so yes a queen in my world, but she has been so busy working on editing Empyre that she hasn't had the chance to ready my next two books. Can you imagine that? She IS my Number One fan, and the books are here, done, waiting for her and yet she hasn't managed to find the time to read them.
Of course she learned her lesson once. She walked into my office and read the part of Emerald Storm that read "then the crossbow bolt hit Royce in the chest" and that was all there was, because I hadn't written anymore. She freaked out, but that was where I stopped writing for the night.
      She doesn't do that anymore.

    SPOILER ALERT 🚨
Having started when they were all released, I started with Age of Empyre. So decided to read them chronologically. Currently on The Rose and the Thorn and honestly I’m not too happy. Heard so much about the adventures of Royce and Hadrian, so I couldn’t wait to get to their adventures. I really, like really, like REALLY!!! enjoyed Legend of the first empire, Mina the wisest wolf. Come on! Malcom was what got me hooked, I loved him before I knew he was Turin. I loved Arion and didn’t want to believe she was dead, even hoped she’ll join them when they got to Rel, but that didn’t happen. I love Greek mythology so incorporating gods into the picture was Awesome! SURI is the embodiment of the Art, simply brilliant. Think legend of the first empire is the climax of all 3 series and should be read last. Haven’t gotten to the Riyria revelations yet, hoping I’ll have a change of heart when I get there.

I read the legends of the first empire series first. I couldn't really get into the Ryrira revelations afterwards. I felt cheated that theft of sword just started a war in one or two chapters. Whereas the age of empire series took 5 books to get to that point. And another thing I liked from the first empire series is that most of the important characters knew each other. So you as the reader got to learn every character as they got to learn each other.
Also I'm a massive Malcom fanboy and I couldn't figure out who he was after the first book of theft of sword (please don't spoil). So I kinda just gave up afterwards.

Ohh no! Sorry to hear you gave up on the Riyria Revelations, that is such a shame, I do find the world building and characterisation within Empire to be superior however I know that Revelations was his earlier work so its to be expected that his quality of writing will improve throughout his career.
I read Revelations first so got to appreciate the the craft development. I can understand that going from Empire to Revelations might have felt like a slight step down in that aspect but I just adore the storyline and characters so much 🥰
