As a Black man that saw this when it came out, i was not offended by the Black Face in the least bit. However, of course I don’t speak for all of us. But for me, it came down to this: The usage of Black Face was acknowledged and served to be an example/spoof, of the ridiculousness of Hollywood actors taking these roles, and that point was reiterated by the character of Simple Jack. The whole movie was a spoof on the “out of touchness”, and cruelty of the industry. I’ve worked in the film/tv biz for over 20 years, so i found this movie hilarious on ALL levels. 😎

Yes, and people don't even understand what "blackface" is: blackface is a *_mocking_* portrayal of a *_stereotype_* . It means purposefully portraying a *_general_* stereotype, relegating everyone of that race into that characterization.
If someone plays a certain specific *_character_* or a certain real *_person_* then that's not blackface, and that's not wrong. But try to tell that to the zero-IQ uneducated crowds...

The press tried to make an issue about RDJ's role but success has no orphans. As a "Black" man I find his performance hilarious. He is not denigrating or insulting. And the interaction with the "real Black" "actor" showcases his Hollywood pushes a certain stereotype.

too let us know that none of this is cool

RDJ actually didn't get any backlash until over a decade later, when people started to get all butthurt over it. Not to get too political or anything, but I'm half Black myself. I never had a problem with his character, neither did any of my family or friends. We all found his character funny, because the joke IS ON Lazurus and not mocking Black people. He overacts and can't drop character; which is making fun of method actors who get way too obsessive about their roles. It's also making fun of actors who've historically taken roles from ethnic people. When it's all said and done, his lines were hilariously executed. Unfortunately his performance has been somewhat sullied by overly sensitive people.
Glad you two enjoyed the movie! Great reaction

This movie could never be made now. Hollywood has lost whatever self awareness it used to have, which wasn't much to begin with. Ben Stiller has a fine satirical sense. You should watch Zoolander which is a hilarious send up of the fashion industry and the whole concept of the 'celeb'.

Robert Downey's blackface here didn't get any backlash IIRC. Some people tried to stir shit up every now and then, but it never works. Fact is, it was self aware and was done satirically to make fun of Oscar bait Hollywood shit rather than making fun of blackface itself. Also RDJ was just awesome here.
IIRC, it was the making fun of mental illness that stirred up controversy. They just straight up turned it into a joke.
Also yeah, you need to definitely watch Zoolander. Another classic IMHO. :D

Downey didn't really get any criticism when this came out. People weren't so sensitive then, I think. The Simple Jack thing did though. But later, when cancelling people became a thing, people started going back to Downey's character and accused him of blackface. But, luckily, it wasn't too bad really. People seemed to understand that it's obviously not real blackface, since he isn't making fun of black people but method actors, and Downey didn't make it worse by apologizing so it just went away.

Of the various serious, classic Vietnam movies, if you were to pick one, I'd say pick "Platoon." As for Ben Stiller movies, the following are all excellent: "Zoolander," "There's Something About Mary," "Meet the Parents," and "Dodgeball." The grizzled "Vietnam vet" in this movie is Nick Nolte, a relatively well-known actor, but I'd be surprised if you'd seen anything of his.

The Fatties preview was based off of Eddie Murphy's movie The Nutty Professor, where he plays his entire family, and during dinner, a couple of the family start farting. All of this was done while wearing fat suits and being outrageous characters.

Robert Downey Jr was mocking a certain type of actor who is egotistical enough to think they can do blackface and win an award for it.
Linda hunt, white lady. Actually did that 20 years before this movie. Only she was playing an Asian man

Robert Downey Jr. was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in this. And there was some backlash. But it was not blackface. He played an egotistical Australian actor pushing the envelope by having a medical operation to portray Osiris. Just a thing over the edge that he had yet to do while earning his five Oscars.

RDJ didn’t get any back lash because we are not overly sensitive we realize it’s comedy and it’s freaking hilarious. People are over the top and cry about everything now. It’s so annoying how the world is now with actual canceling people, like what??

Another take is that the party that is the butt of the joke will be the party to be offended by the joke. With blazing saddles, racism and racist people were the butt of the joke. Therefore, it was that group that were offended the most. The black people back then were not the offended ones,, but the white audiences were very offended.
