Always nice to see a _Tropic Thunder_ reactor who really gets it...and you got it immediately (as a semi-related aside, you'd be surprised how few people get the "Satan's Alley" joke,* so kudos for that as well). Seriously. Anyway, I loved the reaction, and loved seeing someone enjoy this movie as much as I do (it's my favourite comedy as well, proving to the world that movies CAN be extremely, OUTRAGEOUSLY over-the-top, and still be coherent works of art). And as for the budget, I believe it was ~90 million 2008 dollars, which is something like $130 million today. For a comedy, that's a MASSIVE budget. But Stiller (who WROTE the movie, in addition to directing it - not sure if you grokked that) wanted it to look like a real war movie (so the sets, props and effects were all first-rate...also, the explosion at the very end, where Stiller is running over the bridge was meant to parody _Mission: Impossible,_ you know, the one where Cruise is running away from the explosion and gets blown away by it), and he hired INCREDIBLE cinematographers whose visual storytelling both made the scenes look more real, AND took the comedy to the next level. And I don't think you could find a finer ensemble of talented A-listers starring in any other comedic film (from any era). Downey Jr., Stiller, Black, Cruise, Hader, Nolte AND McConaughey...it's insane. And I think Jackson and Baruchel play a key role in the film as "straight men," there to be audience surrogates and put voice to what we're all thinking (Jackson in particular was critical as an ACTUAL black man, there to ensure that viewers, even stupid ones, would understand that the message of the film was "these guys are dumb and completely divorced from reality" and not "we think blackface is cool").
Oh, and FYI, RDJ filmed _Iron Man_ in the spring and early summer of 2007, and _Tropic Thunder_ for a good portion of the rest of the year ( _Iron Man_ released in May, 2008, roughly three months before _Tropic Thunder_ ). So RDJ was very much still in his "comeback" phase, after his issues with substance abuse, proving to the Hollywood establishment that he really had turned things around.
*It's buttsecks! I thought that was pretty obvious, but I guess not.

Weird I've seen every reaction to this movie and nearly everyone has understood the Satans Alley joke. It's pretty obvious. You're overthinking the blackface stuff entirely just like every other person who is obsessed with bringing it up on every reaction. Also there's at least a dozen other comedies from this era with just as big of a cast, some with a better cast.

Also when they were campaigning for RDJ's Oscar nom, some of the "For your Consideration" ads they placed, they used scenes from "Satan's Alley" that don't appear in the movie's trailer.

My understanding is that there have been discussions for a Les Grossman film or series, though I don't know if it will come to anything. Cruise agreed to do the film, but only if he could have those hirsute ape-arms, which are a weird but great touch. I appreciate that they gave two Spielberg references in the same scene when Jack Black is looking at the pile of heroin (Close Encounters of the Third Kind), while rubbing his thumb at two fingers together (Indy trying to gauge the weight of the idol at the beginning of Raiders of the Lost Ark).

So far, you're like 8 out of 10 for being on-point. Don't comment too much, you pick and choose the right moments when the action is lulled, you emote well on-screen, I see you're a writer, but I bet you could also do well in auditions for parts. Being attractive and able to remain yourself in front of a camera is sort-of job numero-uno for many lesser or mid-grade parts, we know this due to the fact that so many rappers are able to get parts with zero acting experience.

23:40 "Tugg Speedman" yelling for the director to cut reminded me of the scene from The Dark Knight, where the Joker makes his entrance at the fund raiser Bruce Wayne is holding for the prosecutor, Harvey Dent. The Joker walks up to Rachel and holds a knife near her face, and the actress, Maggie Gyllenhaal, was so disturbed by Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker that she tries several times to look at the director to signal to him to cut, but Heath, completely in character, physically grabs her face and forces her to look at him.

LIked the reaction, exactly right about the difference between satirical comedy and offensive art. Ben Stiller and Justin Theroux said they wrote the screenplay, yes as a satire on method acting in general. Also though, it was a reaction to a specific group of actor friends involved in war films who believed that the rigors of filming were the same as war itself. Tom Cruise suggested to Stiller that he include a Les Grossman type character, and then shaped Les' look and the dancing.

Imo it's one of Spielberg most underrated movie. And is a great work of adaptation. The based story is a short Novel with the same title from Philip K Dick.
As far as I'm concerned, Spielberg managed something quite rare. Not only it is a faithful adaptation, but he actually improved on the source material by a ling shot. The novel is good but the movie is great.

RDJ gets a pass on this, because the character was entirely making fun of how minority roles were given to white people. The only thing that always makes me cringe in this movie is not one of the things that all the woke people are complaining about nowadays. It is the "a dingo ate my baby" line. Making fun of mother who lost her 9 week old baby girl and was then wrongly accused and imprisoned is nothing i could ever laugh about. Not even in a satire. It's making me so mad. Just imagine your baby was killed and everyone would keep joking about it for 40+ years.
