@@kHanSolo69I can say with confidence that Jen is one of the very smartest reactors. Gets almost every reference, has great editing, great backdrop, doesn’t talk over jokes too often, shows her personality.
Eddie Murphy ruled the 80's and he never drank or used drugs. But like most comedians he got a bit generic over decades imo. See his brother Charlie on Chappelle Show? True classic sketches
Can't believe this didn't occur to me until just now, but the comedy premise of this movie is the same basic idea as in Galaxy Quest - a bunch of actors thrown into a scenario where they have to be the characters they play, but in a real-life setting... aaand hilarity ensues, along with a whole lot of commentary about Hollywood and celebrities to boot. No wonder I love both films so much. A bit late to the party, I'm sure everyone else already made this connection. Awesome reaction as usual Jen!
Disagree. While there is a slight similarity, Galaxy Quest is basically Three Amigos in space. In both Galaxy Quest and Three Amigos, the actors were recruited by people who (primarily due to cultural differences) thought the characters from their TV show/movies were real and needed help defeating an external antagonist. They then embodied their characters to resolve the dilemma in which they were placed. In Tropic Thunder, the actors were not recruited on the basis of a cultural misunderstanding and the only people who were confused about reality were some of the actors. In addition, in Tropic Thunder the actors needed to embody their characters in order to resolve their own dilemma rather than to help the people who recruited them.

Early on in my getting to know him the two of us went to see this in theaters. The two of us sitting in awkward silence at RDJ in blackface before finally just collapsing into laughter at how absolutely hilarious the whole setup is is a formative moment in my relationship with him. Absolutely brilliant on the part of Ben Stiller. It should be the defining film of his career, because as writer, director, and actor, he absolutely fucking nailed it.

Hell yeah Jen! You picked a damn good movie to watch and react to. Tropic Thunder is one of my all time favorite comedy films along with The Hangover, Step Brothers, 40 Year Old Virgin, Superbad, and quite a few others mostly from the 80s and 90’s like Dumb And Dumber, Ghostbusters, Happy Gilmore, Big Daddy, Planes Trains And Automobiles, Uncle Buck, and so much more. I’d recommend that you watch the last one i mentioned prior to Thanksgiving. It’s such a great holiday movie and a true classic in my opinion.
If you want to watch more Ben Stiller I highly recommend Mystery Men. It is a superhero spoof and also with a great cast. Kind of a cult classic, too, and also funny as hell.
@@MrDanteMason It's a spoof on superheroes in general, not particularly on superhero movies. All those goofy names and silly powers are definitely spoofing on a lot of minor characters that Marvel and DC had in their illustrous past and that audition scene could be right out of a Justice League comic book. And sorry if "spoof" is maybe the wrong word, if ever I never learned that it got any bad connotations to it (not a native speaker). If so then I apologize since I am actually a huge superhero fan myself, reading and collecting comic books as well as watching the movies and shows.
Remember Blu-rays? I still buy Blu-rays. I like the own my physical media. Nothing worse than modern censorship due to modern audience crap or having the stuff removed from the streaming service. And there’s also Ben issues already where stuff that you purchased digitally gets removed so you don’t own your digital content.
Another awesome reaction Jen. Did you know RDJ was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor because he played a dude, playin’ a dude, disguised as another dude. 😂😂😂😂
And it took Heath Ledger as the Joker in The Dark Knight to win the best supporting actor over him in this. If the Dark Knight had come out a different year I think he would have won it for sure
"remember blu rays?" yea most movies that hit theaters still come out on blu ray lol. but now they're mostly for enthusiasts because the quality is a bit better than streaming if you have a high end TV.
Jack Black almost got seriously injured during filming because (unknown to anyone, somehow) the water buffalo was pregnant at the time and got agitated while shooting the scene where Jack was on top of it. It launched him and he landed in between two boulders that would have messed him up (maybe even killed him) if he's landed on them. On a positive note, they named the baby buffalo Jack in his honor
Fun fact: when they’re talking about a top secret mission in “south eastern Vietnam” they actually used to say that during the war when they had to speak on missions that had actually taken place in Laos or Cambodia (such as when they had to give Medal of Honor citations which the president himself gives personally thus they have to mention something to the media) because we weren’t supposed to be there or anywhere around there except for Vietnam itself but all the arms and stuff essentially feeding the Vietcong were flowing into Vietnam through those countries so we did a bunch of bombing and missions with MACVSOG which was a very weird and absolutely insane and insanely top secret unit comprised of essentially the best of the best of the best special operations guys across the US military and if you want to hear some insane stories I’d watch the black rifle coffee podcast with some MACVSOG guys and it’s funny because Evan Hafer the ceo of black rifle was a Green Beret and then went CIA and thus has been there and done that but even he and literally every modern special operations veteran that has interviewed or talked about those MACVSOG dudes always get blown away at how insane and insanely dangerous their missions were in comparison to what the modern special operations dudes deal with

Robert Downey Jr was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in the movie, but Heath Ledger's family accepted the award. Downey Jr won 15 years later for OPPENHEIMER.
Zoolander is HILARIOUS and would definitely be my first recommendation for another film starring anyone in this, it holds up really well as a comedy, it's super well written. Also Meet the Parents/Fockers have plenty of laughs and cringe-worthy second hand embarrassment.
Bro, Eddie Murphy did that in like 7 different movies... And I'm talking about the fat suits. Him playing multiple characters is every single Eddie Murphy movie.
The Nutty Professor, Norbit, Meet Dave... during the 2000s you couldn't escape the "Eddie Murphy plays multiple characters" movies. Norbit is even believed to have cost him the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Dreamgirls. The fact that all those movies were completely forgotten is a testament to how bad they were. Now Eddie Murphy is just reprising the same roles that made him famous/rich (Coming 2 America, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Shrek 5). Arguably just as cynical but much less obnoxious.
The last month has been an especially great time. From Event Horizon, to this great comedy - plus my honorary fave STNG episode, Darmok - it's been an extra rich set for me. Thanks so much!
“Man, I don’t drop character till I’ve done the DVD commentary.” 😂😂 and fun fact, RDJ still stayed in character for the DVD commentary, it’s hilarious.
It’s great because Ben Stiller and Jack Black are recording the commentary with him and it’s clear they weren’t in on the joke so they just keep getting cracked up by RDJ.

This was a parody of Vietnam action movies, which there are MANY. Apocalypse Now is just one of the most popular. (There are a few scenes directly parodying the movie, but this entire move isn't necessarily an "Apocalypse Now Parody")
War movies in general. The scene towards the end where Tugg is looking around with the sound cut out is an homage to the opening scene in Saving Private Ryan. There are definitely others as well.
1:21 that joke trailer is 100% spoofing "The Nutty Professor" from 1996 with Eddie Murphy. And yeah, that's exactly what those movies are, one man playing multiple overweight characters and a lot of farting.
Most people think something like this could not be made. I was working in a movie theatre the year this came out. 2008 WAS AN AMAZING YEAR OF MOVIES. I saw it SOOO many times. Even now love watching others discover this insane movie.
Glad to see a Reaction channel where you immediately recognized Tom Cruise, I've been amazed at how many channels have no clue until the end credits; I don't understand it at all but it happens alot.
And as is apparently obligatory to point out on every video about this film, Robert Downey Jr. did, in fact, not drop character until he had done the DVD commentary.
39:10 A very specific and often missed joke here: the Academy Award for Best Actor is always presented by the previous year's winner of Best ACTRESS. The implication being that Kirk Lazarus won that award as well.
One subtle thing that is easily missed is at the beginning 4 leaf says the mission was to south east Vietnam… but that was in the allied hands during the war. Just one more subtle element that flavors the satire
My #1 movie of all times.... 🙂 Small thing I always love is the "I'm a roster illusion" - "Fuck it! We'll deal with him later" because so many movies are so stupid and would in such a situation try to talk the person back into reality instead of the fast and sensible thing of just dragging them to safety first.
Great Reaction Jen like always, this movie is EPIC, love it. The characters in this movie are basically parodies of actual people in Hollywood. The action star, the warshed up comedy star, the extreme method actor, etc. This movie is a satirical take on Hollywood and I love it! The main point a lot of people miss with Robert Downey Jr.'s "Full R****d" speech is how Hollywood tends to treat acting rolls that involve the handicapped and LGBTIQA+. You might've noticed in the pictures at the end that's what every actor other than Ben Stiller was nominated for before Kirk announced the winner. The only people mad about this are this new generation who are mad at literally everything. Theyre constantly mad at comedians and actively boycotting them wherever and whenever they can, then ignoring people who say things and actually mean it. There are very few movies like this, for obvious reasons. Mel Brooks is the only other director I can think of who satirizes Hollywood, although he does it with more affection. When Tom Cruise was asked to star in this movie, he only had 2 conditions. He wanted to dance and wear a fat suit with big hands, and Ben Stiller said "sure". Also roughly 3/4 of the character Les Grossman was improvised by Tom Cruise! Fun fact. Just like he said in the film, RDJ stayed in character as Lincoln Osirus for the dvd commentary of this movie! Its fking hilarious! Keep up the good work.
I watched this movie with my buddy when this came out in theatre We didn't realize Les is Tom Cruise until end of the movie We were dying laughing when we found out it is Tom Cruise 😁 Love your reaction Jen 😄
What made your reaction especially top shelf is that you got many of the references that others had missed. For a movie like “Tropic Thunder”, that for me was highly impressive and added to the entertainment value. ❤🏆😂
Wow you jumped right into that one with no intro! The “Jen Sings” drinking game only yielded three shots this time. The “Jen Says Frig” drinking game topped out at four. 😂
It's a parody of lots of movies, that's why they can't be sued. The similarity to Apocalypse Now for me is the news reports on TV and radio about the movie while it was being filmed, about the overbudgeting. They were afraid that it would bankrupt the studio if it was a flop. The next year a movie called Heaven's Gate did the same over budgeting thing to such an extent that it bankrupted United Artists studio.
That's a great movie. Thanks for the reaction. Besides Robert Downey, it's definitely Tom Cruise that steals every scene he's in. Many scenes pay homage to other movies. Platoon, Rambo, Apocalypse Now for example. And the way Stiller flies through the air after the bridge explosion is the exact same way Tom Cruise does in Mission Impossible III. Great stuff, so many nods and Easter eggs.

Mystery Men is an adaptation of an independent comic book, though finally it’s pretty different.
Mystery men is so underrated!
May the forks be with us!
I was going to say the same thing.
Dude i still play on my PS3 (and 2) lol. Literally did it yesterday.
"remember blu rays?"
yea most movies that hit theaters still come out on blu ray lol. but now they're mostly for enthusiasts because the quality is a bit better than streaming if you have a high end TV.
Love this movie! Only saw it for the first time two years ago myself, can't believe it took me so long to see this masterpiece.
Jen, I love how the landmine totally caught you off guard. 😂 That was priceless that reaction
You are just amazing. Got the looks, personality and humors .Your abilities to recognized humors is a sign of High IQ.
Fun fact: when they’re talking about a top secret mission in “south eastern Vietnam” they actually used to say that during the war when they had to speak on missions that had actually taken place in Laos or Cambodia (such as when they had to give Medal of Honor citations which the president himself gives personally thus they have to mention something to the media) because we weren’t supposed to be there or anywhere around there except for Vietnam itself but all the arms and stuff essentially feeding the Vietcong were flowing into Vietnam through those countries so we did a bunch of bombing and missions with MACVSOG which was a very weird and absolutely insane and insanely top secret unit comprised of essentially the best of the best of the best special operations guys across the US military and if you want to hear some insane stories I’d watch the black rifle coffee podcast with some MACVSOG guys and it’s funny because Evan Hafer the ceo of black rifle was a Green Beret and then went CIA and thus has been there and done that but even he and literally every modern special operations veteran that has interviewed or talked about those MACVSOG dudes always get blown away at how insane and insanely dangerous their missions were in comparison to what the modern special operations dudes deal with
Are you sure you weren't a janitor in the Coast Guard?
Jk
Happy pre veterans' day (That's the eleventh for you communist heathens)
"Is it sugar? Is it fun-dip?"
OMG sweet innocent Jen! We love you!
Ben Stiller’s sprinting always cracks me up. He always looks like he is sinking into the floor.
Paused what I was watching and came here immediately when I noticed this in the side bar. One of the greatest Comedies of All-time with my Favorite Solo Reactor, Happy Friday!!!
Aside from being completely over-the-top hilarious, this has some decent Action beats, an absolutely stellar cast, a brilliant multi-generational soundtrack, and some of the greatest quotes in Cinematic History. I expect much merriment behind Jen's Serious Girl Spectacles on this one.
Also, people love to say "This or that couldn't be made these days", but for this Classic, it's absolutely true. Cheers from the East Coast. 🥃
Robert Downey Jr was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in the movie, but Heath Ledger's family accepted the award. Downey Jr won 15 years later for OPPENHEIMER.
Jay Baruchel and Danny McBride are both hilarious in "This Is the End" too!
Zoolander is HILARIOUS and would definitely be my first recommendation for another film starring anyone in this, it holds up really well as a comedy, it's super well written. Also Meet the Parents/Fockers have plenty of laughs and cringe-worthy second hand embarrassment.
The Fatties is a satire of Eddie Murphy’s version of the Nutty Professor where Eddie Murphy plays like 4 different characters in the family.
Bro, Eddie Murphy did that in like 7 different movies...
And I'm talking about the fat suits.
Him playing multiple characters is every single Eddie Murphy movie.
Like the nutty professor movies and the klumps.
Eddie Murphey and Arsenio Hall also did several characters in Coming to America.
😂”Action Jackson can’t cry.” I forgot a lot of the lines in this. Jen’s voice in this reaction was like holiday music to my ears. Thank you 🙏🏾 😊
The last month has been an especially great time. From Event Horizon, to this great comedy - plus my honorary fave STNG episode, Darmok - it's been an extra rich set for me. Thanks so much!
Jen, watching movies, on RUclips.
“Man, I don’t drop character till I’ve done the DVD commentary.” 😂😂 and fun fact, RDJ still stayed in character for the DVD commentary, it’s hilarious.
It's one of my favorite DVD commentaries ever. So funny
@@cliffbeavers6158 I think my love for DVD commentaries is why i end up watching so many movie reaction channels...
It’s great because Ben Stiller and Jack Black are recording the commentary with him and it’s clear they weren’t in on the joke so they just keep getting cracked up by RDJ.
7:50 Wow, you got that faster than almost anyone I've watched...good job Jen! 👍🥃
15:23 Classic Lines #1🤣 17:03 Classic Lines #2 🤣🤣 25:01 Classic Lines #3 🤣🤣🤣
I've watched a Metric F*ck-Tonne of Reactions to this movie, but this is probably the best one. Not only did Jen hit my three favourite moments, but damn-near every high-quality comedic beat was included. Kudos for helping to kick off much-needed weekend after a truly dismal week. 👍☮❤
This movie is such a meta commentary on the movie business in general.
This was a parody of Vietnam action movies, which there are MANY. Apocalypse Now is just one of the most popular.
(There are a few scenes directly parodying the movie, but this entire move isn't necessarily an "Apocalypse Now Parody")
Definitely some Platoon in there, amongst others.
War movies in general. The scene towards the end where Tugg is looking around with the sound cut out is an homage to the opening scene in Saving Private Ryan. There are definitely others as well.
Jen you are the best! Awesome movie and reaction 🫶
Best video intros ever, keep up the great work Jen! 🍻
It deserves to be said again. Quick intro is best intro! Enjoyable as ever!
Love your videos and reactions. Above all love your laughter. 😂😂 You are a science officer in Star Fleet.
1:21 that joke trailer is 100% spoofing "The Nutty Professor" from 1996 with Eddie Murphy. And yeah, that's exactly what those movies are, one man playing multiple overweight characters and a lot of farting.
OMG, I feel like this Movie keeps getting More and More Insane!😅She won't be able to stop Laughing her way throughout this one😂and Thank You, Jen!👍
YES!!! Finally! Woot. Dropping what I'm doing to watch this reaction immediately!
"For four hundred years !!!" 😂
This movie aged like fine wine. I loved it when it first came out and 15 years later it's still one of my favorite comedies of all time.
One subtle thing that is easily missed is at the beginning 4 leaf says the mission was to south east Vietnam… but that was in the allied hands during the war. Just one more subtle element that flavors the satire
Oh Miss Jen, Thank you. Just what I needed today, feeling sick.😢 This movie is so funny. It brightened my day. Have a good day.😊
My #1 movie of all times.... 🙂
Small thing I always love is the "I'm a roster illusion" - "Fuck it! We'll deal with him later" because so many movies are so stupid and would in such a situation try to talk the person back into reality instead of the fast and sensible thing of just dragging them to safety first.
The theater experience was crazy. Didn’t even realize the movie had started the first few minutes. Just went from trailers to trailers.
Just starting to watch, but YAY! Been waiting for this! 😊😎🎉
I watched this movie with my buddy when this came out in theatre
We didn't realize Les is Tom Cruise until end of the movie
We were dying laughing when we found out it is Tom Cruise 😁
Love your reaction Jen 😄
Not the panda! 😂
This movie is the perfect Jen movie. Plenty of laughs and explosions
GREAT REACTION! 🤣 you just sat back and let the INSANITY wash over you! 😁 really enjoyed this, thank you! 👍☺
Tom Cruise dancing to "Low" is one of the greatest moments in movie history 😁
What made your reaction especially top shelf is that you got many of the references that others had missed. For a movie like “Tropic Thunder”, that for me was highly impressive and added to the entertainment value. ❤🏆😂
Top 5 comedy. Genius writing. Need to watch this a couple times. Could never make this today
Yes! Crocodile Dundee! That man is a national treasure!!
Four Leaf was Nick Nolte. He played a PART in North Dallas Forty. One of my favs.
One of the all time best comedies.
This movie is just plain brilliant, and so much fun! Loved the reaction, was right in line with how it was in the theatre!
Apocalypse Now is essential viewing..top 5 all time movie in my opinion...absolute must watch...
Best "I'll see you in hell" answer was in Unforgiving. And it was "Yeah" then boom goes the dynamite
Tom Cruise signed on to this film with two conditions:
1. He got to wear huge hands, and
2. He got to do a stupid dance.
Wow you jumped right into that one with no intro!
The “Jen Sings” drinking game only yielded three shots this time.
The “Jen Says Frig” drinking game topped out at four. 😂
Jen, you should check out "Cop Land" with Stallone. I think you'd like it.
Always a fan of your reactions, Jen, but you were hyper Jen on this one. Loved it! ☺
My favorite comedy from the 2000s! Seeing this in the theater was a trip.
This movie is an absolute Gem🤣 no matter how many time you watch it, never gets old.
It's a parody of lots of movies, that's why they can't be sued.
The similarity to Apocalypse Now for me is the news reports on TV and radio about the movie while it was being filmed, about the overbudgeting. They were afraid that it would bankrupt the studio if it was a flop.
The next year a movie called Heaven's Gate did the same over budgeting thing to such an extent that it bankrupted United Artists studio.
by definition, where ever you see Jen, it can't be hell.
