Steph got it right away. The entire movie is a satirization of Hollywood stereotypes and the movie industry itself.
Yeah that becomes pretty clear two minutes into the movie when they play the Scorcher 6 trailer
She also pointed out the no "female lead actors" - was also a critique of hollywood? Never even crossed my mind until she said it.
@fernandocortez-lira5899 since this is a combat movie, they would have been out of place since women weren't allowed in combat back then.
Ben got the idea from an old war movie he did back in the 80's. All the leads had to go through bootcamp before shooting & he said they started acting as if they'd actually been to war & knew better than everyone else.
@@moondog3056 They could still have cast some of the other roles with females, Matthew McConaughey part for example. That wouldn't been to uncommon even 15 years ago.
I'm pretty sure it was a deliberate choice to not do it, to even play more on the "it's a man's world" topic.

14:45 the “Never go full r*tard” scene of both one of the most ridiculous and yet most brilliant speeches in comedy history. Kirk makes incredibly accurate points about how the academy and Hollywood as a whole treat roles of people who are either autistic or mentally handicapped.
Same goes for "I'm a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude." 😅
If you watch closely during the final scene at the Oscar ceremony, you'll notice the other movies nominated were all about disabled people.

In a way is a pretty good advice for writing too, as you can't just portray a clinically accurate illness without any intrigue.

The dead panda bit wasn't originally in the script. At the time, Jack Black was fresh off of Kung Fu Panda, which was projected to make all kinds of money, and apparently, he wouldn't shut up about it. So, Ben Stiller decided they had to work in a way for his character to kill a panda.
The really crazy thing is he actually killed a Panda on screen in a single take. Neither China nor PETA were thrilled, and the production had to pay many hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines as a result. Still, well worth it - the movie just wouldn’t be the same otherwise
That was Basic Instinct homage to use a movie to hide what actually happened to Amanda.

Tom Cruise especially, he never gets to act in these kind of roles and he was all in.
This movie shows why so many other parodies fail: it fully committed to what it was trying to do, and didn't pull its punches to avoid criticism. Just comedy gold.
The self awareness of this movie is wonderfully done. Not too far. Full on Hollywood poking fun at itself. Les Grossman should have his own movie

I never noticed the "Shadow me, Pinocchio" line, even though I watched it several times. This is now my favorite line from the movie 😆
Aside from his roles in The Last Samurai or the Mission: Impossible movies, Les Grossman is my all time favorite performance by Tom Cruise. When I first saw this movie, the scene of him going on that rant against the kidnappers made me laugh so hard and for so long I nearly passed out because I couldn’t breathe.🤣🤣🤣
The funny thing was half of this stuff was his idea. He read the script and said I have some changes also I need a fat suit with a tonne of hair. NVM they just read that.

The first time I watched this, I didn't clock Tom Cruise at ALL. Genuinely - what a character to behold and how completely unexpected ~
It didn’t click for me until he called Bill Hader’s character a nutless monkey. I finally recognized the voice. I couldn’t figure out who it was in his earlier scenes, but I knew the voice from somewhere.

This is the greatest role Iron Man ever played bruh....I still remember the fact that he literally didn't break character until the end of the actual DVD commentary on the film. Hilarious. RDJ really is one of the greatest, he has all time great comedies, indies, blockbusters, romance movies etc. I'm crying laughing every time he is on screen.

Both these Ladies are so lovely but as far as emotion goes I have to say that Kristen is on a level of her own,this reaction is amazing..I recommend watching their reaction to "ARMAGEDDON". These two pair up so well I would love to see them with a channel of their own. Lots of love from N.Z.

Tropic Thunder is an action comedy masterpiece. Ben Stiller has only recently gotten more recognition for his directing, but, if he hadn’t directed the action so well and so convincingly, the whole thing falls apart. And everyone one the cast was amazing, especially RDJ. He was nominated for best supporting actor for this too, which wasn’t very controversial back then. That was just before we went from a color blind society to being so sensitive that we are damn near segregated again. He’s talked about accepting the roll extensively on the episode of Joe Rogan he was on. Interesting to here is thoughts about it now.

My favorite part about the Four Leaf reveal is that Nick Nolte actually served in Vietnam.

So glad Steph and Kristen enjoyed this, what a great movie and I’m glad they got that it was satire, recently saw a reaction to this that said it aged poorly and they were offended by it. And these two did not disappoint and their reaction was thoroughly enjoyable, they got the movie, they understood it and enjoyed it!

This is definitely me and my mom's favorite all time movie. We watched this a million times Frfr and never got tired of it not once. And to see Tom Cruise in this was literally the cherry on top. Had me dying laughing every time he showed up and Matthew McConaughey at the end was priceless especially how he took off like the roadrunner or Sonic the Hedgehog into the jungle like he was on something. What I love is that I remember reading that Ben Stiller had let Tom Cruise read the script, and the character of Les Grossman was in it, but only vaguely described, not really developed, and Tom said he had an idea for the character, and that he wanted to play the role, but only under strict conditions: "I wanna dance, and I want to have fat hands."

This film still has gif meme clout running strong today in 2024, especially from Lincoln. I mean Kirk, I mean Robert Downey Jr., "Never go full GOP!" is a recent fave...and yes RDJ never quits character until the ending of the DVD commentary, of which Tropic Thunder has won awards for one of the best DVD/Blu Ray commentaries ever, you have to get a copy and listen/watch it!

I remember seeing the ads for it on billboards on my way home from work. I legit did not know that Robert Downey Jr was playing Kirk Lazarus, or on the billboard at the time. Then of course I figured it out after I saw the movie. But also because I hadn't really seen him in a new movie since his drug problems before that, dude really did make a great comeback all things considered!

Tell you this, I’ve worked in “the biz” doing lighting in Hollywood for 20 plus years, and we ALL (the crew members) share/exchange stories and experiences of working with different actors. I’ve never worked w/ him, and The Scientology aside (gonna leave that alone) but every person I’ve worked with, that has worked with Cruise has nothing but nice things to say about him. And that’s rare in this business to not have heard a bad story/experience about an actor that’s had such a long career. That says a lot.
All time classic movie. The surprise package was Tom Cruise. If I remember correctly, that last dance performance by him was an improv.
