I think the characters should be doing the ads. This one broke into your house, he could have easily explained how SurfShark works for you.
Dammit I should have thought of that!
Our local hobby shop did an event where they had a bucket of different Citadel paints and you had to pick out 6 at random. Using those 6 you then had to paint a model before a deadline. It was an interesting challenge and I really enjoyed it
those side characters man, i need to delve into the ninjon extended uniserve

@@1989eol what do you mean
Love this type of content. It's easy to get overwhelmed watching a RUclipsr who has tons of experience use a specific paint for each little part of a model. So its nice to see that even with a starter box of paints, anyone can paint a fantastic miniature with the right skill.
I agree very strongly with this comment. Such a great concept Mr. Ninjon.
Who knew being broke af would be a plus while learning to paint 😂
Ye
Man, this was fantastically entertaining and inspiring to watch. I love how much pressure was taken off by just using the paints in the box. Seriously something I am going to implement in order to help with the analysis paralysis.
Dude this looks so good. That skin tone is amazing
A welcome surprise seeing you here
@@typhus7796 He's incognito. His Clark Kent disguise is to just take Dr. out of his name. Because of this disguise, we aren't supposed to recognise him.
Now he just needs to paint a whole orks army with the scheme
When worlds collide haha
Wanna play Blood Bowl?
This is terrific- seeing what you can do with just the basic paints was amazing! More of this would be fantastic…
Agree
Its a Zorn Palette, which is an amazing limited palette to work with. Whoever put that particular paint set together actually knew what they were doing. Most of GWs limited sets are garbage color combos.
This guy is even wierder then that "Brent" character from last time.
Yea. But I think he doesn't have the same depth of character.
@@1989eol But that other character has this whole backstory. I mean who creates an entire 2nd RUclips channel with almost a hundred videos just for a simple intro! Thats some SERIOUS dedication to a skit.
Don’t know about content however I love these videos and even this old crusty has learned a few things. Keep up the good work.
@@michaelpierson982 Absolutely true. And the casting for this actor. This must have been a job. He is one of a kind.
@@1989eol The real question is Animatronic cats, CGI, or Cyborg?
Thanks I DID really appreciate this approach. Personally, I’m interested in a video on how to paint your D&D character without overwhelming the mini because it’s one thing to have special objects for the character and have items they’re wearing from places and encounters in the game, but another when it’s on the mini 😣
It’s best to have a low level, mid level, and high level. If you use consistent colors ( brass for details, silver for metal, ect) it looks consistent and it’s easier to do. To much variety creates a muddy looking mess. Complimentary colors are also the best for clothing (red and yellow looks good.)
Just look at this, he made cheap paint kits look good, as they say limitation breeds creativity
Loved the video, Jon. And honestly, I'd love to see more takes on the "Start Painting" boxes from multiple ranges. It's always cool to watch an artist thrive with limited resources. I'm very tempted to try this process now myself 😅
This video concept is so good. It's very uplifting, given that it's how many of us started, and this ork was dope as hell
Love this video, and that's just a fantastic paintjob. Would love to see similar, "painting-with-a-limited-palette" style videos, especially a starter set. It's really inspiring to see just how far you can make a starter set go. Oh, also, I'd love to see you paint an Ogor model - your approach to skin here is super cool, and I bet could make for some amazing skin tones on those big hangry boys.
Suggestion for another limited palette video: Put 20 or something colours on a wheel, spin it five times. Add white and black. Have fun
Even funnier would be a smaller wheel where you can only use 2 types of brushes.
*hard mode is when you add in a sweeping brush, a sponge, and making a bootleg brush wish someone's hair(pets shedding also works)*
Yes, this!
This video is going to definitely help me with my new ork army. Thanks Jon.
The skits at the beginning are always amazing. 10/10.
Plastic toy soldiers glued together with plastic cement... Yep, chemical toys, yesss. And Blood bowl violent? I got a great victory with KO's and out-of-games only, and never a touchdown.
As for the paints: looks like GW.
Again, great one Jon!
We're continuing to see the fracturing of Jon's sanity into a series of intro characters
Hummm, painting orks seams nice. Great job with the skin with a starter paint kit. Your videos are amazing. Thanks Ninjon 😁
I really dig this idea… doing more with less and getting away from the “I need more paints” mentality. Also the tip about glazing the shadows is perfect!
Ya I agree I have a few different paints but most of them are limited colors in a variety of ranges for effects. Like contrast paints, kimera, scale75. I like that although I don't have 100 different colors, I do have different techniques I can use.
@@rikimaru_vr same… I’ve found that I can do a ton of different things with the Blood Angels contrast paint! The undercoat and dilution approach really makes it versatile.
@@rogue.guineapig ya I really think undercoating with the contrast paints is the way to do it
This really helps me as well since I just started warhammer and painting and collecting, really, but, I just bought the nyds start collecting along with the elite and command edition and the starter paint set so seeing the possibilities with the paints I own is awesome! I've been trying to find more videos using the paints in the starter paint set but no one has one really:/
@@somedude5465 one of the best pieces of advice I heard is that recipes usually don't matter.
Just use whatever colors you like in the army, the only thing that matters is writing down your procedure so you can replicate it for the whole army, but if it's hero or unique jobs just have fun with the colors at your disposal.
Hot Chick : "so what do you do for a hobby?"
Me: "i paint toy soldiers" vs "im a chemist"
i know what im choosing
You know, I actually like that "camo green" ork skin. It actually feels vastly better than bright green or even dark green ork skin. It is almost a "classic" Tolkien orc skin color. It looks brilliant.
Speaking as a beginner, this is the best mini painting video I have ever seen. We learn about colour, we make our own judgements, we see so much of how what you're doing affects the result.... I will definitely be trying this.
Man i would love to get into the hobby, but it seems pretty overwhelming with all the gear you need! Living vicariously through these and others videos is a good fix though.
Jon we need a video where you and Scott go head to head on who can paint the most realistic tendie. I’m sure a good print or STL is out there somewhere.
Lol

I love this!! As an Ork player I got pumped for the Ork, and then got hooked because of the challenge. Please do more of these challenges!!! This was amazing!
"Example of use, mini not included" - One step forward, 3 steps back GW.
Well played mr. GW, well played
Seriously, they could have put in a single model sprue. They give you everything else, including hobby clippers, but nothing to clip!
Maybe the intention was to use those clippers, plastic glue, and the cheap plastic tray to model your own figure. But seriously, yes, they should have at least included a single figure.
Um, most paint sets don't include miniatures with them, other than the occasional GW flagship-faction specific set with paints directed at a certain army and including a few models of that army. Many brands and other GW sets haven't included models because they are meant to be a low price entry point that you can use with the miniatures you like that you probably already have or bought a small cheap set of a few miniatures from the shelf next to it, again, of your choice. It would be one thing if they did just rip you off and lie about box contents, but the one little picture with a disclaimer isn't that and something that simple isn't unheard of for most products.
@@Alittlefruitgoesalongway It's about context. These sets are sold in book shops that probably don't have a huge range of minis for you to pick from, or maybe none at all. It's also possible that someone's first experience of the hobby would be ruined if they didn't read the smallprint and expected there to be a mini inside. Not including a single mini is a missed opportunity for GW.
I find it unreal that GW would make a starter paint set WITHOUT maccrage blue.
Glazesfor shadows, and opaque layers for highlights, someone's thinking like an oil painter. It's always fun to see hobby painting find its way into tried and true fine art techniques and methods.
I think there's a trapped under plastic podcast episode (I think it's S2E2) where john and scott talk about oil painting. (Scott is painting his Chaos Knight) John sings some high praise.
I mean, paint is paint. honestly we should look at the world of fine art for inspiration more often
I'd love to see you do more of these starter paint set pieces! It's fun, and really interesting to watch how you work within the limitations
Today I learned that Barnes and Noble carries (carried?) GW stuff.
So does Target and different Walmarts
The beginningsketch was so good! Its not an easy thing to do actually.
Suggestion: I came here from Miniac and tbh I've never done a "mini", but found the gaming side of the hobby has a lot of great tips and workarounds for the side of the hobby I am interested in, and that is tanks, aircraft and ships. Would you consider building, painting and weathering an aircraft or armor kit in a build series, and maybe even convince Scott to join in and do one on his channel?
I am sure there are more of your followers who build kits from other genres in this hobby and would love to see you guys tackle this 😉😁
I'd kinda second this one. I love the stuff you guys are doing, but sprinkling in something like what Night Shift does, or Plasmo. Those guys do a nice job in that space and it would be fun to see you guys in the gaming modeling space spread out a bit! :) Keep up the good work fellas!
Military figure and a piece of armor would be a great video. A maschinen kreiger suit would be cool too.
Wow love the pale skin I think it looks better than the standard ork skin tone great video
This was great, Jon. Working with a limited palette is a wonderful way of expanding your skills. I'd love to see more of this type of thing. Thanks for the video and the inspiration!
Great work. Totally amazed how you can take such simple tools and end up with a great result. Shows that you're talented but also that you know how to think about where and what to paint. And I suppose that's what I really enjoy about your content - the delivery is great too, but the real gravy is the advice on how to use the paints properly. Seeing you paint those volumes on his arm with the green and the yellows and then putting the accents on with the glazing was really insightful. But also understanding how all those minute details all have to tie in together to allow the mini to really pop was great information.
Come on Mountain Dew give this talented man a sponsor! But really, i love how it turned out. Buying thousands of paint is a sickness that many of us have to bear but this goes to show that it's really not necessary at all.
I really like how you paint. Thanks!
God I love this channel. You're such a welcome addition to this space, keep it up Jon!
That is a badass wooden door 🚪
Gratz on that!
That is a great deal for that "Blitz" Bowl set! Nicely done, goes to show what you can do with a limited palette, using only a little experience and creativity!
I would love this to become a series.
"Actively used incisors" is a good name for a band.
"chemical toys" holy crap that's funny :D
Carl has some personal space issues.
Dude, thanks so much for this! The glazing in shadows and texturing tips were 😘👌 Really loved seeing the potential for experimentation and maybe even reducing some choice paralysis that restraining your palette has. Could be fun to see some viewer voted paint ranges and models in the future 🙂
"No it wasn't" 😂
This take on orc skin is something I wish i'd see more often, shading with red really makes it look fleshy, like there's actual blood under that skin, which the more common cold shading never manages to do in my eyes.
I feel like you could make a little series out of this, with different start painting box sets. It was really cool to see what you could do with a limited selection, and I'd definite watch something similar again applied to a different selection of paints / minis.
Paint AMAZING *chemical toys *with a TERRIBLE Warhammer Beginner Paint Set
You, Scott, and Vince should run limited-paint-selection competitions using sets like this; the outcome was stunning and inspirational.
Fantastic paint job mate
Hi as a complete beginner from the land down under thank you. I am 53 and starting warhammer from scratch. Can you make a video for complete beginners that helps choose a miniature to paint that won’t scare us off the hobby? Thanks!
Newbie....how do you decide what to use as primer (Black-Gray-White-Red) ?
Orruk...main color green.... prime red ? Opposite on color wheel...
A comparison of the different basic paintsets would be interesting. Like Army Painter, Citadel, Valejo, ...
Definitively willing to watch future limited resources painting projects. Good job highly enjoyable and informative.
Love what you can do with such minimal resources! Gorzag looks AMAZING!! It gives me hope with my starter Vallejo pack and minimal experience 😅
Hey man I just think I should let you know that Remus is not forgotten and that video has kept him in my mind and many others he will never be forgotten
Thank you Tom!
@@Ninjon thank you for bringing this amazing content to all your fans and making others happy
I typically start out with a starter set and they just grow... My background is watercolors, so I really like mixing and layering with pigments.
You insane Jon. One of my favorite painters. I don't care if you're not Sam Lenz. I like your style. 10/10 would buy again
This looks amazing. I’ll definitely be experimenting with fewer colours.
Wow, looks absolutely great!
On a different note… how’s that Dew Light sponsorship for TUP going?
feed the algorithm
Moral of the story: LEARN HOW TO MIX PAINT COLORS! Thank you for this helpful reminder, Ninjon!!! Wish I had learned sooner instead of buying so many paints (OMG I've bought so many in my lifetime lol)
I like this experiment with the starter paint set.
Video idea: MOAR ORKS!
But Orks with alternative skin tones, yellow, blue, albino, red.... You know, colors that aren't green.😁
That skin? *Chef's kiss*
I tried something similar. Gave myself 8 paints to do a CSM. Didnt turn out how I wanted it, but that was like 6 months into my hobby "career".
Now, a few years in with a good few more minis and techniques under my belt, I think I will give it a retry. Perhaps on a 3D printed demon (obviously for Reign in Hell!), a Crimson/Imperial Fists kitbash of Chaplain Tarentus, or The Mountain from ASOIAF.
My Aunty bought me the 40k 8th Ed paint set. It's brilliant (the cutters and brush are rubbish though).
All the colours are drab so you can only paint Grimdark.
A secret tip is to recycle your old printer ink cartridge for free ink. You can adjust colours later with a layer/ filter. Eg: Averland Sunset is a pathetic yellow... put on yellow from the printer and BAM! Hope you're wearing welding goggles.
It also forces you to mix colours which is nice and sort of a painting fundamental oft overlooked. My set has Skintones, Primary colours (drab), "Army" colours, and Metallics.
There's nothing i can't paint.
Armies painted:
Goff Orks 3000+pts
Deathwatch Killteams x2
Raptors SM 1500pts
Descent Boardgame
Space Crusade Boardgame
The black and silver is low for obvious reasons and the agrax is also way down. The rest will never run out.
Getting all the old paint pots from your friends can help too at a later date. They probably only need a little stirring...
"Bringing 5 different browns"
I FEEL PERSONALLY ATTACKED!
I did occur to me that this could be a fun mini series of videos. Like pick an odd model and use a near random paint set.
Great experiment, I would like more videos like this 😜👍🏽(edit) Cuz of this video I subscribed to your channel
Lol. Does Ninjon know how to mix and apply Citadel paint?
Yes... I think he's done this before.
I liked this, I started with custom mixing a limited set of Testors. I learned to mix for consistency, shading, and how to apply color with more purpose. Learn to mix colors for variation instead of reaching for the entire shelf, it'll help your skill and wallet.
Edit* holycrap; 1st ork? Bravo 👏 👏 👏
I really wanted to try mini painting, so after having watched tons of videos making a list of what to get, I on summer vacation walked into the closest store which had warhammer stuff and paints because I want to get into the hobby. I did not expect that this was literally the single biggest mini painting store in the region, bigger than any in my country or any of the neighboring countries stores. HUUUGE warehouse filled with mini painting stuff. Many long walls filled with paints, brushes accessories and all the stuff you could ever need. Me having zero clue what colors I need or what paint scheme I want, walked around the store for hours looking at what to get, I settled on the 40k paint tool set, and the orruk starter set as well as some army painter tools, Tamiya extra thin, and a bunch more stuff I really don’t need until after I have figured out if I enjoy the hobby or not. I spent a few hundred $ on tons of stuff I probably don’t need because various RUclipsrs said this is great, buy this, everyone needs this. Now I have a few basic colors, some obscure colors and a few duplicates, as well as tons of useless gear: Black, White, 2 identical Red, Blue, Yellow, zombie green, greenish brown, reddish brown, neon green translucent, 2x identical weathering brown, black texture paint, brown texture paint, and 4 metallics. Specifically:
2x Mephiston Red
Abbadon Black
Corax White
Macragge Blue
Averland Sunset
Orruk Flesh
Steel Legion Drab
Bugman’s Glow
2x Leadbelcher
Runefang Steel
Runelord Brass
Retributor Armour
2x Agrax Earthshade
Tesseract Glow
Astrogranite
Stirland Mud
TL;DR make a very specific list of the bare minimum you need to paint, and do not buy any of the other stuff until you are certain that you enjoy the hobby. Or else you’ll end up sending tons of money on random stuff you have no need for yet, and if you decide this hobby isn’t for you, most of that money is lost because resale value is low.
Now I’ll just have to hope I enjoy mini painting when I get home, or else I’ve waste hundreds of dollars.
The moment you realize that you somehow didn't realize Karl is played by Ninjon - #NotTheSharpestKnifeInTheDrawer
God bless you, Ninjon.. I'd throw in my 2 cents, but how do you improve on perfection... Maybe do some videos on stuff like OSL or using pigment powders.. I'm aware other creators have done it, but none of them are virtually sitcoms/stand-ups like you..
Fresh haircut bud, looking good. Ever thought of painting something in the style of an iconic Fantasy Artist. Thinking Frank Frazetta, Julie Bell, Boris Vallejo, Donato Ginacola?
Amazing work Jon! And clearly a single ork model has convinced you that your personal WAAAAGH can't end there. Considering (I think?) that you and Scott prefer AoS/fantasy maybe try the new Kruleboyz? Creepy, grim and kunnin' orkz! Scott is surely going to have plenty of new Vampires, so maybe think on some battle reports one day!
Bruhhhh. I had to pay $77 for that beginnings kit minus the glue. Although I got 13 paints... BUT STILL
Brilliant ! Love the result you got from what you had 👍🏻 Actually prefer the natural green 🤫🤫🤫😂
I've been watching a TON of painting videos lately as I get ready to get back into Tabletop wargames and RPGs, and this video is my FAVORITE by far so far!
I feel like if that intro skit happened to me, my first response would be "...how did you get in through my window? I'M ON THE THIRD FLOOR!!"
Great job, Jon. I'm looking forward to your video about painting primarily with oils. Your Lion from KDM looked amazing. Please think about doing such a video in the near future.
This was incredible, while I'm not confident enough to mix paints like that and keep the shades consistent - I learnt so much! I've needed a rust colour and have overlooked Mournfang Brown! And I was considering using Deathworld Forest for the base tone flesh for the upcoming Kruel Boyz and this video has helped cement that scheme for me! That final model is absolutely incredible, I love these single set paint challenges
Skrag brown is also a great rust/dirt effect when heavily thinned down! Combining the two would probably give ytou some really detailed rust.
Wet palettes would allow you to keep more mixed paints for longer, improving your ability to keep them consistent.
Great video but I'm still trying to get my head around the Blitz Bowl thing....like....what.
This was fantastic!
And it's probably been mentioned elsewhere, but the B&N-exclusive Blitz Bowl game is a very sought-after, excellently modernized take on Blood Bowl. If you managed to snag one, it's a ton of fun.
I'm not a fellow mini hobbyist, but that doesn't seem to prevent me from fully enjoying your videos. The production quality is impressive and seems well thought out. The content is entertaining while, most importantly, not employing abrasive attention-retention tactics. You just make enjoyable videos... kinda like Bob Ross, except you paint unhappy little orks and well, now I'm rambling. But that's okay, because I'm only commenting in order to urge RUclips's algorithms to increase the visibility of your videos. Keep up the great work!
Sometimes I wonder if I bought 100+ paints to try and overcome my lack of painting skills.
Start a Gorkamorka mob & campaign - plenty of opourtunity for painting & conversions, plus - it's Gorkamorka, so thats a win.
Yup love this experiement... was forced to do this when I got stuck in qurantine with papa Nurgle's plague and the only paint set in there was a start painting of some sort... similar colours to what you have there and painted up a stormcast eternal... was actually really fun to do something that confined.
I've rarely see an orc skin like that, that's just excellent. The tone and all the variations you put in it made it awesome. I'll definitely try that!
Thanks for your work!
Great video. I wish I had found this deal. I bought a similar Age of Sigmar starter paint set with tools for about 35 $ US. I'll soon paint my Blood Bowl 2020 Black Orc and Imperial Nobility teams with it, I'll let you know how it goes!
My introduction to painting was this old 5 man Dark Angels "learn to paint" set with the TERRIBLE Imperial Primer brush on primer. I'm glad these products exist for new hobbyists, but I don't think I could ever go back to it so I salute you haha
This is amazing dude! Love these type of videos as I’m just starting out in the Warhammer 40k hobby. Just pick up a box of Adeptus Mechanicus Skitarii using what little paints I have and playing around with mixing and shading.
That's a good looking Ork.
Video Idea. Swap shops with another hobbiest for a 24 hour paint challenge.
Nice work Ninjon. Very good tutorial. I'll use less paint in thé future. Buying some minis to improve my painting technique using few colours. Thanks 😄
As a complete beginner to painting Warhammer 40K mini's AND having picked up "beginner" paint set(s) this video gave me hope that I can pull off half a decent job. Your work though is amazing!
It's incredible, and makes me relieved that actual colour theory is much more important than having the full citadel / army painter paint set.
This was great! I’m getting some buddies into the hobby, and I don’t want to scare them with having to buy a wall of paint for 5-10$ a pot. So I’m looking for small sets to experiment with ( ie a Vallejo set of 16 ). I think you’re idea of getting mixing down early is really important. I have a question about metallics though. Is there a good work around for not having metallics? I don’t want to throw NMM at them, but I also want to be considerate of their “start up cost”. I’m pretty sure the answer will be, “put that extra money into a metallic” but since we are talking about limited paints and colors, just wondered what OTHER idea can we come up with.
Never painted an Ork????? that's it, paint a 2000 point Ork army as punishment, love you surf shark, and cheers from Canada Jon, lotsa love. Loved the idea and execution.
Mate, excellent layering technique. Combined with the glazing came up trumps. Superb model with a deliciously natural palette. Maybe do a model only with 'cyan / magenta / yellow' as a project?
I don’t usually comment but I watch all your videos. I LOVE your intro, it always makes me giggle!!! I always learn a lot and I like how you used a limited palette. Thanks for making me smile everyweek!!!
Ok, I know you don’t want to do lore videos and I don’t blame you for that. GW’s lore seems like a total clusterfuck. Just an idea though, if you are doing a video of a model from an army (say… Ossiarch Bonereapers) how about a little info on what drew you to that army? For example, while painting this Ork, you could have talked about Orks in 40k and AoS.
Just an idea.
Love your videos! And really enjoy the podcast while every 2nd Monday. I hope you and Scott can/will start up in-person classes soon.
