I just got back into the hobby after nearly 25 years, and I've felt like it'll take a couple of years to get my army of Tau fully painted. Overwhelming. Then, it dawned on me that when I did this as a child, I HAD a fully painted army! Not painted GREAT, mind you, but a full High Elf army painted to the 3-color tournament grade: spearmen, archers, some dudes with animal pelts and big-ass axes, a wizard, a mounted commander, a Bolt Thrower (if only I knew...), and a Tirinoc Chariot. That's all I can remember having, anyway. Pretty sure I used the same tiny brush for all of it, putting paint straight from the pot onto the models because I didn't know better. It was a reassuring memory, because if 12 year old me could do it with zero knowledge or resources, then today me can DEFINITELY do it.

Thats the mind set! I always tell people that, no matter how bad they paint, as with any skill, they will get better over time, but only by trying and sometimes failing. And no matter how badly paint your army, ANY paintjob will look better then no paint, so you always improve the look, no matter what you do. And last but not least: failing is totally of no consequence, as you can literally paint strip ANY model, no matter how hidiously its done. There is an entire youtube channel about a guy who buys the most hidious ebay armies and then paintstrips them to give them a new life. Gonna have to agree with the eyes. I've seen many painters try and get the glowing eye effect and I think it has only ever really worked about 5% of the time and only on very specific models. The rest of the time, it just looks like someone has splattered paint on their face.

I think the most important aspect of painting armies is cohesion. It’s more important that the quality of your paint job for sure. If you paint one model badly it looks bad. Hey Jon, Excellent video - really love seeing the 'paint a whole army quickly' vids and this one was really good cos you got in a lot more detail than most do whilst still coving the basics and staying on time! And you didn't use an airbrush (much) which is normally what turns me off these videos. Nice Job! I would really love to see you take them to the next level though for a few reasons: First, one thing that may put people off is that the fast paint job isn't the best paint job, but it does get them looking cool and on the table (slaying that grey!). But being able to do that with the freedom of coming back later and tweaking them up to that next level kills that excuse. The second is that I think there is skill and tricks in actually taking a "finished" job and making it better without ruining what you've already achieved and I'd be interested to see how you tackle that problem. Third seeing all this may feed into the thought process of doing the first fast paint job, thinking ahead to if you come back to them, would be nice to see if you reflect after dialling them up that you would have done the first job differently to accommodate the second (if that makes sense). Love the channel and your work!
I watched Duncan's video on night lords as well as yours, and it made me realize why Duncan painted the trim 1st. So much easier to be messy with the trim and neater with the armor panels.
I feel like after the streaking grime and the red glowing eyes, the blue doesn't look blue anymore, it just looks black in the final shot. No one's going to be confusing them for Ultramarines yes, but maybe a bit of a blue wash on the armour panels would be appropriate for that "crank up to 11" you're considering.
I enjoy watching someone trudge through the same sh*t as I’ve done so many times, all these similar steps and all these main colours just longing for the final great touch to bring it all together!
I have had an army since 15 Years and i never quit it. With a lot of Patience during the Years i take It so many times and covered all the detail. Every model is fantastic. When you see all togheter any army in your channel can compare it.
But I support you, is not my first interest and i didn't do a business on it. Just play 1 time at month with friends.. So yes i dedicated so much time on this 4000 pt army
@@damnright1968 I think that is an unfair/bold assumption. It would be equally unfair if someone assumed, based solely on your comment, that you spend too much time painting and not enough time with your family. I choose to assume that this is not the case. I will concede I should have said parenthood is ‘one reason’ not the ‘main reason’ armies do not get painted. Everyone has different circumstances and challenges with respect to family, personal, parental and work life that might prevent them from doing as much painting/hobbying as they would like.
I would like to see the eyes of the models get accentuated even more. Maybe by an even brighter red just in the eyes. Currently the glow effect is a bit to mashy for my taste.
I think a big excuse you missed in this video is motivation/inspiration. Too many times we pass up painting because we just don't feel like we can paint our best or we just don't feel like painting right now. This is especially strong if you are a little to eager for a project and buy a mountain of models right away and you overwhelm yourself. The finished project just seems too far away. Personally, the way to beat that is habit. Sit down and force yourself to paint once a week, or least two hours a day, or even just pick a detail on a model and get it done. Eventually, as you see your project actually start to come together, the motivation and inspiration will come. You'll look at the work that you've done and see that it's more than the work you have left, and the finished project is just around the corner.
Tracking progress is very rewarding. But I don't wholly agree with experimenting on models for an army. Especially ones you may do a lot of kitbashing/converting on
Just wanted to say thank you for all your tips! I got inspired to get an airbrush and followed along with your airbrush tips and a whole bunch of other tips (Brush cleaning and highlighting etc) and I painted more, better quality miniatures than I ever had in the past! Much Love A

great video, and i would love to see these fellas pushed the extra mile. working on my own army at the moment and i'll be using some of these tips for sure.
Love the continued videos. Its great that we can see the areas where a good painter can take shortcuts as necessary to what you want your army to look like and know that you can come back later. Challenge - can you bring this back into a future area with your normal flare to cover how to clean up your speed painted army and bring them to that next level? Thanks for the content.
Way to build confidence and learned some cool techniques along the way. Oil washing really brings the models up a notch. I enjoyed watching you through the post paint portions too as the models came together your energy levels went up as I imagine you were enjoying seeing the process pay off.
I’ve been painting my AOS lizard men similar to this. About 4 hours a night every Saturday. I think my last day will be this Saturday. They have been sitting on my shelf of purgatory (where my assemble but unpainted models go) for almost 4 years now. I’m so glad there finally getting finished.
As someone who is really really new to the hobby and has yet to even try painting them out of fear of me messing them up because of lack of skill. This video really helped me boost my confidence a little before diving head first into it. Thanks mate!
1) Already looks amazing dude, don't touch it. 2) thank you for addressing the "should i varnish between steps" question, and the varnish powder question. i recently learned the hard way after 6 coats of Dullcote on pigment powder lol.
That red is PHENOMENAL! Love the glow, love the brightness. Also for "cranking it up to 11" you could definitely do some choice metallic highlights to add a bit more life, but I would be happy stopping here.
Love this video! I would love to do edge highlighting and all that but I don't have that kind of time to paint a whole army that way. I usually end up base coating, dry brushing, and accessing a few key details I want to show up and washing and then I am done. Most of the time I can do a model in about 15-20 minutes using a hairdryer for drying time. Going to try out some of these techniques too and see how I like them!

I find this to really work for me. Spending 1 hour every night painting is so relaxing. It also gets my armies done in a few weeks if, and that's a big if, I can stay focused.
I think you should come back and take this army to the next level or you may always wonder what could have been.
Are we able to get a breakdown on the army looking at your different units and the conversions you made on them???
Gotta admit. This is my favorite video about painting entire miniature army. Stamping with drybrush is awesome and easy technique for beginers like me
At first, I was going to say, welcome to the Hell that is Blue and Gold, but at the end, makes me want to repaint my Thousand Sons.....a third time cause of you and Miniac.
Ive watched this video 4 times, and it gets better every time.
I’m trying to imagine my wife’s reaction when I say “honey, I’m going to spend ONLY 2 hours a night painting. Have fun with the baby!” 😂 I think she’d find some creative places to tell me to put my models…
Lol same here, but with a three year old as well as a baby... It's hard haha
I felt this on a deep level
@@pizzalord3n ha, exactly my situation too. It's so freaking hard... I try to do 30 minutes of hobby a day. So far I'm managing it. It's not much, but at least I am making some progress on my models.
I suspect there's room for improvement but in my humble opinion your army looks great as it is.👍
Newborn?
I think it’d be awesome to see how someone can revisit their army and take it a step further after speed painting.
Lol... Totally had a FML moment for you there when you started that first turkey wing... Almost like whoever the "moron" was who gave them all that trim designed that model out of pure unadulterated spite lol.
Another killer video! Now, I play Bolt Action and since many of the models don’t typically see many different color ways, I still find your videos very useful. This one is definitely one that hits home. I’m a single dad and with work and all the things I find it hard to find the time, but, I’ve been working in an hour a day to do something, anything in the hobby. Assembly, prime, paint, even organize and plan, so I can continue to show progress in this hobby. I’m new to table top and new to painting and these videos really help me a lot. I can see that pile of shame transforming into a pile of acclaim, and I owe a part of that to you and your tutorials. Keep up the great work!! Thanks!
I paint during my lunch break so that's an hour 5 days a week, other then getting a 2000 points of chaos space marines done, I get 1 chaos space marines done, in the course of 2 weeks
Same day this video came out, I looked for Fart Quest and picked it up at a local store. We're 2/3 of the way through it, and my daughter also loves the book. If we miss a night reading she's upset the next morning once she realizes. Thank you for sharing this little bonding moment.
Oh this is awesome! I’m so glad you are having the same experience that I am. It’s one of those fun memories to look back on in 20 years, I bet she will remember too!
I really loved how your ultramarines ended up looking. Great video!
in my experience the biggest time saver and hobby improvement in general is learning what you can get away with not doing on the model and still have it look great at the end of the day
Hey Jon, Excellent video - really love seeing the 'paint a whole army quickly' vids and this one was really good cos you got in a lot more detail than most do whilst still coving the basics and staying on time! And you didn't use an airbrush (much) which is normally what turns me off these videos. Nice Job!
I would really love to see you take them to the next level though for a few reasons:
First, one thing that may put people off is that the fast paint job isn't the best paint job, but it does get them looking cool and on the table (slaying that grey!).
Yep. They were looking like Black Legion in the final shot.
Yeah. Came here with a similar comment. The blue is lost. I liked them up into the red eye effect. Very cool process, though.
I enjoy watching someone trudge through the same sh*t as I’ve done so many times, all these similar steps and all these main colours just longing for the final great touch to bring it all together!
You've helped me become so much better at painting, thank you Ninjon and those lads look sick!!!
Sunday: Eh, that all looks kinda rough. I'd rather spend more time to get a higher quality result.
*Jon adds red eyes and grime*
Son of a bitch...
Wholesome as fuck ad placement.
Can't wait to hear about this whole project on Trapped Under Plastic.
You forgot the main reason armies don’t get painted… parenthood!
Then you might suck at it!? Got 3 kids, smallest is 2 years old and I still get my painting done!
Quality. Gold. Content. Loved the white under red airbrush move.
I cried when we lost Tasslehoff Burrfoot.
11:47 this is the best piece of advice I've ever learned on the internet thank you
12:30 Editing notes accidentally left in, or explanatory graphic? You decide!
Yep! I want to see it cranked to 11!! I’m currently finishing up my army but want some inspiration for going beyond table ready.
Air-brushing their faces red literally made me sad.
2 years later, Ninjon repaints this army: "Red on faces too overpowering."
I am always ahead of the curve :P
You are like Miniac but helpful and not a total mondo-mega tool. Good on you dude, you earned my subscription
I would like to see the eyes of the models get accentuated even more. Maybe by an even brighter red just in the eyes. Currently the glow effect is a bit to mashy for my taste.
I agree. Just put some white in the center of the eye. Often coloured things like lightsabers are actually white with a coloured glow around it
and this definitely doesnt read as a glow as its uniform around the eye, theres no bright centre or fall off
the coverage of those colours is incredible.
Especially ones you may do a lot of kitbashing/converting on
But I do like to grab spare models to practice a scheme and modify paints/techniques to get to a time/quality I'm happy with
“I still have one more stupid fucking turkey to paint” . Priceless well placed F bomb definitely feel the pain in your voice.
i appreciate your honesty when painting for this video
Just wanted to say thank you for all your tips! I got inspired to get an airbrush and followed along with your airbrush tips and a whole bunch of other tips (Brush cleaning and highlighting etc) and I painted more, better quality miniatures than I ever had in the past!
Much Love
A
That defiler was everything I hoped for and more. If ya wanna come back and do more, do that. But that army looks great.
That's how you know "Chronicles of Riddik" was grim dark, the more important the Necromongers were, the more skulls they had on their armor.
You’ve inspired me. I have a vanguard idoneth Deepkin box coming in the mail, AND all of this week off work. I’m gonna try to get it all painted by the end of the week
It takes me an hour and a half to paint the trim on a single rubric. You are amazing.
That stippling technique with a dry brush is fantastic. Been holding off on starting my vehicles because how big they seem. Gonna give this technique a go
Leveling up the paint job sounds cool. I wish we got some good glamour shots of the kitbash all painted up.
I worked my way through my ork army, 10+ years ago, each evening after work for about 2 weeks. 3-4 hours painting with movies in the background. Man it was great. Need to be doing that again and fortunately, 3d printer is shipped!
Dude, this seriously needs to be featured on Armies on Parade. Freaking fantastic!
This army looks great! I've been looking forward to this video since the kitbash video. I would love to see this army taken as far as it can go for sure!
Absolutely stunning, and seeing the entire panning view... *kneels*
I recently switched to Pro Acryl for my metallics, they are super bright after one coat as well.
I definitely think that coming back and doing another week on this army as a "What if you took two weeks" vid would be pretty cool.
Nightlords was the perfect opportunity to proxy a creaturecast dragon for the dumb helldrake. Great job though on painting!
"...is not to be thinking whenever possible..." Wise words ninjon.
Yes. I would like to see you crank that army up to 11! That would be awesome.
YES I want to see this army revisited! awsome work, chaos space marines are highly underrepresented on youtube.
I subbed based on your mid video spot advertising books for children and the way you talked about reading with your daughter is wonderful. I came for the paint stayed for the character of the content creator!
This was so helpful to see the progression in drybrushing and that wash removal step was an eye opener. Thanks Jon
I love how our experiences are simillar. When watching some other youtubers i sometimes differ opinions about products and stuff, with You its 100% match. All same fave colors ( need to try that gold, but it seems like a lot of extra moves over retributor armor)
Schmincke white, Jack bone, Kimera red, oil washes.... love that stuff!
Very impressive the way they all turned out, love the red glow that really makes the models pop.
great video, and i would love to see these fellas pushed the extra mile. working on my own army at the moment and i'll be using some of these tips for sure.
Is love to see a second pass on your OBR and these folks.
The army looks awesome! Great job.
Awesome. Thanks for the video. Not a skilled painter myself, this helps a lot and shows what's possible. Thank you very much.
Definitely think you should do a follow-up video on these guys just to see how far you can take your paint job but these look so cool already!
I like that you always spare a thought for those of us without the right space for an air brush.
Great video as always!
Started this 2 week method in November, life really got in the way and I just finished 1 of my Nightlords and he came out really nice.
Great video, for sure it would be good to see you coming back and cranking up a few of the characters
can we take a moment to be thankful jon took a really great sponsor about something he cares about instead of another raid shadow legends
I have to say I absolutely love your Vargheist headswap. Love FEC and it's cool seeing some spare bits being used so effectively~~
